You need a program. A lot of women like New Rules of Lifting for Women. I think it lacks in the form instruction department and it also gets a little too complicated for my tastes, but it is a popular choice and definitely work a read, whether or not you choose to follow the program. It's available for $15 on Amazon.

If you need more form instruction, look on YouTube for Mark Rippetoe form and/or buy a copy of Starting Strength, which I think is invaluable.

For other programs, you can google Strong Lifts or Wendler's 5/3/1 programs and find the one that suits you best. The key is to make sure you are 1) consistent and 2) consistent.

    All this.

And understand that it will take time. I'm almost 4 months in and while I haven't seen a huge change on the scale, I have seen changes in the way my clothes fit.

I just want to say thanks to all of you gorgeous, strong women for sharing your pics and experiences. You are all truly inspirational and I will be scrolling through this thread whenever I need some added motivation.

Because I don't own a lot of equipment and HATE gyms, I started You Are Your Own Gym last night and am hoping that it's at least a good start toward seeing progress.

    Thanks again, ladies!

Adding Nia Shanks http://www.niashanks.com/ "Lift Like a Girl" to the list - she's got a pretty freaking awesome program too! I started with NROL4W, currently (just started) Wendler's 5/3/1.

Just read through all 19 pages of this thing and WOW! So totally inspirational. I have a very athletic build (underneath all the jiggle!) and have avoided lifting because I fear the bulk. I know if I was already a lean build it wouldn't make sense but I have actual muscles already! I don't want my muscles to get "bigger," but defined would be good. Looking forward to picking up the ROLFW.

Wow, you ladies are so inspirational. I do weight lifting, but I don't know if it's considered heavy lifting. I've been seeing results, but not losing weight, which I'm ok with, because I know I'm building muscle at the moment. So far all I have is before pics, since I'm still very much a work in progress.

Yeah, what they said^^^. Thanks for the inspiration women. I'm currently on a plateau but I'm smaller than I was 10 years ago at the same weight. And today I accidentally brushed against my unflexed, rock solid tricep and was like "Oh, yeah, **that's** why I lift". Keep it up ladies!!

Ladies! A friend and I were just discussing that the term "lifting heavy" may put some off.

The idea here is to lift weights challenging for YOU. The programs that are my favorite have you start with the bar, which weighs 45 pounds. Many of you have picked up children that big, and even squatted down to pick up something you dropped while holding him... or if you don't have kids, a bag of groceries, or a backpack!

In Stronglifts, or Starting Strength you are aiming for a few sets of 5 repetitions...5....that's it...you build strength very well this way...and the next time you add 5 more pounds and give it a go.

So lifting heavy doesnt mean you have to squat 500 pounds, you just need to challenge YOUR muscles.

    I hope this helps someone:flowerforyou:

I started this at 40... and my body is better than it has been since I was in my early 20's.

I LOVE what lifting has done for me...physically AND mentally.

    http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/The_Starting_Strength_Novice/Beginner_Programs
    http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5-beginner-strength-training-program/

Great explanation and thanks for the references. I'm all about the links. lol And this is something I'm just starting to look into (not the bulking issue, but how to get started), so I really appreciate it.
