  • Anybody using Runtastic Road Bike app to track their stats? I'm confused as to which activity I should be choosing when riding my bike. Cycling or Road Biking? I just did 20 miles in a 1hr and 30mins and the calorie burn between the two is almost a 400 kcal difference. My avg speed is 13mph and max speed was 19mph. Any ideas? No HR data available.

Hi all, you're doing brilliantly! Sorry havent been on here much, did a tri (which was my goal) Sunday before last so scaled down on cycling the week before and had a bit of a social life (shock horror gasp) last week, but will be back on it from tomorrow.

Will definitely not reach my target this month but aim is to blast it next month....!

    Happy cycling all!!:flowerforyou: :drinker:

Wish I had seen this thread earlier. While i have never been an avid cyclist; I have kind of taken it up over the last month. I do record all of my trips with Runtastic so there is a record of them. If there is another one in the future I will look at getting involved.

  • Hit my MTD goal of 150 last night with a 31 mile ride. Averaged 17.1 over 1 hour 48 min. Now it's time to just pile on a few more miles to see if I can get to 200.

I just use the MyFitnessPal calorie count. So if I rode 13 mph for 90 minutes, I would search for cycling in the MFP database, then select the option that says 12-14 mph and put in 90 minutes.

In my case, I tend to prefer the lower calorie total. There's no sense in expending 1000 calories in exercise, then eating another 1000 calories, if you're trying to lose weight. So when I ride I allow myself to maybe go a little over the daily calorie total (without exercise) but not use up the whole extra 1000 calories.

I'd guess cycling may be for indoors? Especially if cycling shows as the least of the two. I use the mapmyride app.

  • Just found this thread and wanted to post my ride this morning. I just got a new Diamondback 2013 Overdrive 29er and it has made so much of a difference in my riding.

    64:18
    14.01 mph average

In and out of traffic, over curbs and as up and down as one can manage in Florida. I feel great. I cant walk.

    Done!

Last night, I decided a bit extra ride so that I can smash the goal - 240 miles.
My GPS software on iPhone (copilot) totally screwed me over. It wanted me to ride into the air force base. What's with that!

Temp is getting cold - upper 40s. It was kind of a test run for my fall clothing.
I bought a yellow cycling wind breaker and a tights. I'm sure that my tights look isn't pretty.

Also a new head and tail lights. The head light I got worked really well and am very pleased.
Tail light - I forgot to turn it on...

Anybody using Runtastic Road Bike app to track their stats? I'm confused as to which activity I should be choosing when riding my bike. Cycling or Road Biking? I just did 20 miles in a 1hr and 30mins and the calorie burn between the two is almost a 400 kcal difference. My avg speed is 13mph and max speed was 19mph. Any ideas? No HR data available.

The activity choices of Road Bike app are Cycling, Race cycling, Handbiking. I don't see "Road Biking".
Are you talking about the difference between "Runtastic" and "Road Bike"?

In terms of 400k cal difference, Is it the difference between Runtastic app and Road Bike app?

Can you tell me the reported cals on both? If so, it's interesting, because I think Road Bike reports a lot lower than actual. First of all, I ride a hybrid bike which is not as efficient as road bike, so the cals I get must be underestimated.

My ride last night was 19.2 miles for 1:31:24. Road Bike's estimate is 673 cals. I do have a bummed knee but at ave. speed of 12.6mph, 673 is probably lower than actual.

But at the end, I chose to ignore the underestimated cals. For the cal counting purpose, I don't mind that way. It would be nice if it's accurate but there is no way so I'll take the underestimation than over estimation.
  • Now that the month is almost over, I have found this. :) I bought a bike on June 8th. Since then I have ridden over 900 miles. I rode 344.2 last month and finished just short of the 350 mile goal I had set for myself (sinus headache/crap on the last day of the month). I am at 279.1 for September. My goal for this month, since I went back to roller derby practice twice a week, was to continue to do at least 60 miles a week. I have beaten that goal and would really like to get to 350 for the month, but with more limited time, I am not holding my breath on it.

I love, Love, LOVE my bike and the way I feel riding the trail on a sunny day. I am so happy that I found riding again. Buying a bike was definitely the best investment I've made in a long time. :)

Thanks. I definitely worked up to it. I've only been dieting a month or so, but I've been riding since 2008.

Fixed gear means that the cog on the back wheel is fixed to the wheel so that if the wheel is spinning, so is the cog, and so are the pedals. In other words, I can't coast. As long as the bike is rolling, I'm forced to keep pedaling. Most fixed gear bikes have only one gear- whatever it's set up with. There are special fixed gear hubs available that have internal gearing so you can have three speeds but still be fixed gear. Those are pretty rare though. Most fixed gear bikes have a single speed.

I actually have six bikes, but do most of my riding on three of them. The fixed gear bike gives me the best workout because I'm always moving, but if I'm riding with a fast group, I can't keep up in the hills. Going up hill, I can't shift down since I only have one speed, and going downhill, I have to spin with the bike and I can't spin fast enough to keep up with them when they're coasting. And when I ride with my wife, I have a cruiser-ish bike I rde.
