Clean Eating Bashing?

I am really glad you posted this so I dont have to haha. I totally agree. Before i started eating "clean" (the best that i can at least) i had so many stomach problems, ate fast food a lot, never went to the farmers market or bought fresh produce, everything was always frozen (not that theres anything wrong with that, but i do LOVE the farmers market, and i am actually spending LESS money than I was before) I am definitately a much happier person than I was at the beginning of the year. I try not to judge what other people eat and it really bothers me that people put down cleaning eating so much.
I feel the same way. Eating "cleaner" makes me feel better. It's not for everyone. I do eat "nonclean" foods as well occasionally. Had chili dogs this weekend.
Do I think it's necessary for weight loss. No.
I do believe I said that I don't eat clean all the time. I just stated that I try to and I feel better when I do. The chili dogs were fun but not for all the time.
And eating clean means you eat things as close to their natural state as possible. I'm not always able to do that. But I do when I can. Why so snarky? Can I not answer the question of the OP? This is what works for me and has nothing to do with fitness.
I am not forcing my ideas on anyone or trying to change anyone.
If you're not trying to force ideas on anyone or change anyone, such as defining 'clean eating' without putting any 'in my opinion' qualifiers on the definition, why are you presenting your ideas on this particular topic, in this particular forum?
LOL. So you want specific scientific studies that prove to you that it makes ME feel good? LMFAO. I think you are reading more into it than is actually there. If I want to make a homemade Grassfed burger Wth do you care.
I do believe you need to read the OP again. I eat this way. I like it. Eat what you want. Who gas?0 -

As far as a clear cut definition of clean eating.....I don't think there is one. If there is it will probably change tomorrow. For me....it is what I said.0 -
This is a perfect example of why people bash "clean eating"...pretty much 95% bro-science nonsense....
and nearly impossible today..I mean come on what is wrong with homemade pumpkin pie???? or Shredded wheat brown bread????
Why nearly impossible today?
I eat Organic meat, fruits, vegetables and include as many other organic foods as possible. It's pretty easy if you know where to find it... science nonsense? well I don't have to be a scientist to know that hormones, pesticides and whatever chemically induced engineered digit code number pumped into food is bad for you.
This is not to say that I did not have a magnum ego on the weekend and enjoy every finger licken part of it.
But i try to eat clean as much as possible, but not all the time - Cus life is for living.
SO YOU CAN EAT YOUR FRIKEN FILTHY *kitten* JELLY BEAN!! HAHA
Why because unless they are using seeds from a century ago to grow these veggies the seeds are GMO....
"Evidence on substantial differences between organic food and conventional food is insufficient to make claims that organic food is safer or healthier than conventional food With respect to taste, the evidence is also insufficient to make scientific claims that organic food tastes better."
There is a group here that is certified organic and I know for a fact that they have chemists working on bug killers, fertilizers etc all the time...they call it compost tea...even organic you have no idea what is really going in it.0 -
Who dropped the "pal" from the "myfitnesspal"?0
-
I think people bash it because they can't hack it. It's too 'hard'.0

Seeds - So your saying that because the seeds and soil are already tainted, we may as well spray pesticide because we are screwed anyway. It's like your saying have a s*** sandwhich and another scoop of s*** on top beacuse your eating it anyway.

^ This is in reference to taste - we all know fatty processed foods taste good, my *kitten* knows this better than anyone.
But there is substantial evidence which "States" organically farmed food is better for you than processed.
And your right, we have no idea what is really in our food and there sure are companies out there who will just slap an organic sticker on their product even when its not. But this isn't going to stop me from doing my best to try and eat cleaner.0 -
If you've seen the Bull****! episode by Penn Gillette on organics, it seems that anecdotally the GMO-food is better tasting than organic food.

Of course it is, it's not natural!!
We all know that things that are bad for you taste good, otherwise half of us wouldn't be here ha-ha0 -

No what I am saying is that even organic food has lots of processed items in it so that argument is null for it being "clean" per the loose definition given. If you do the research on the organic industry (and I could as my husband worked there) you find out that they tweak stuff all the time and refuse to give out the recipe. Yes their cows were grass fed but they still altered the milk and cheese etc. And the cows did require vet visits to prevent illness etc.
As for the other reference reread please it actually says that there is no evidence that organic is "healthier|
" or "safer" or " tastes better"0 -
I'm not really a fan of Twinkies. I've found that washing them doesn't help.0
-
Basically what it comes down to is this...
Why deprive yourself of something you really want? it's not going to hurt you in moderation. Stay at a reasonable calorie deficit is what is required to lose weight, exercise for fitness...
All the other stuff, clean eating, detoxes, cleanses, juice fasts etc are not necessary for weight loss....or fitness
If you choose that great go ahead but there are lots here who know that in the end of it all those who deprive themselves of the items they want ie "bad" food like pizza, or cookies or cake or nuggets will eventually fail..it is the psychology of weight loss.
ETA and those that choose "clean" have at but those who know you don't have to will always let that fact be known and if it looks like bashing you too sensitive.0 -
I see some people on here that survive exclusively on fast food and I really don't want to pay for your Obamacare for you.
You make me glad I'm an ex-pat and now live in Canada.
Also, that attitude is why people who eat like me get "bashy" about people who eat like you. The way you eat works for you. The way I eat works for me. We can always compare test results.
Edit: spelling derp0 -
I agree! This is myFITNESSpal, not myWEIGHTLOSSpal. Eating clean contributes to fitness in more ways than eating twinkies at a deficit does.
Why does eating twinkies mean you aren't fit?
NO ONE SAID THAT! This is exactly what I'm talking about.
It was implied that eating twinkes = not fit.
Still waiting on the three ways eating clean contributes more to fitness than eating "twinkies" or whatever else does.
It was not implied. You inferred it.
3 Reasons: Meeting your nutritional needs before you eat exclusively snacks is on its face better for you or nutritional guidelines would not exist at all. Twinkies take a great deal of processing and transporting of ingredients to accomplish, which contributes to water and air pollution, neither or which are good for you. Twinkies contain a lot of corn-based ingredients which contribute to the mono-cropping of American and threaten the sustainability of the food system.
Do your own freaking research on Twinkies. You are lazy for making me do it for you.

Personally, clean eating for me is eating as much unprocessed food as possible. Avoiding sugary foods because it negatively affects my performance when running. Eating a balanced meal that includes complex carbohydrates, fat and protein. And ensuring that I get all of my vitamins and minerals from food before the end of the day. This has worked great for me and I call this clean eating for me. By definition, If I start consuming sweets and junk food I am eating dirty because it goes against my definition. Now what people fail to understand is that what works for them may not work for someone else. Who am I to tell them how to eat. Everyone's body is different and will respond differently to certain diets. From the top of my head I can think of a few definitions of clean eating. 1. Eating within their calorie limit. 2. Eating lots of plants, fresh meats, whole grains, reading ingredient lists, eating fewer ingredients, eating smaller frequent meals, etc. 3. Eating three meals a day. 4. Avoiding foods you know you are allergic and sensitive to. The list can go on. I understand why people bash the term because it is an ambiguous term.0

Man! Work kept me away from this gem. In, late :grumble:0

I eat a "clean" diet whether I'm trying to lose weight or not.
If I'm trying to run a calorie deficit, so-called "clean" foods make it easier because they're so much more filling, ounce for ounce, than processed foods.
If I'm eating a slight calorie surplus to get stronger, it's about the only way I can get enough protein into my diet at my calorie goal.
But that's just me. If ice cream and cake fit into your diet plan and don't get in your way, more power to you.0 -
this place definitely ain't named "MyScienceBasedFactsPal" either

YOU HAVE TO EAT ALL ORGANIC FOOD AND FREE RANGE MEAT OR YOU WILL DIE!!!!!!0 -
Have not read the thread as I am sure it will play out the way that the thousands of other 'clean eating' posts do.
The issue that I have with it is:
1) the pompousness of 'clean eaters' that you often see (just as annoying as the other extreme)
2) the basic misinformation that is given, like "you can only have abs if you eat clean"
3) the fact that many 'clean' eaters' are incredibly disparaging of those that do not eat clean, calling their food 'garbage' and the like
4) the fact that many of these 'clean eaters' do not actually eat clean for much of the time when you actually look at their diaries
I get that people posting gifs of pop-tarts, ice cream and cheesecake can be annoying, but so is the above.
So, until the above stops, I doubt that the other will.0 -

I'm sure it's been said, but no one bashes clean eaters' diets.
What people bash are the totally unscientific BS claims that many clean eaters make about food. They bash the idea that clean eating provides benefits for body composition or health despite the lack of evidence for those claims.0 -
Don't take the "clean eating bashing" personally.
It's primarily the ones who've had difficulties with their weight in the past. They've decided (or are unable) to not give up foods high in fat and sugar (i.e. "junk food"), and due to whatever limited success they've had, believe there is something wrong with those who desire to cut such things out of their diet.
They'll tell you how healthy they are, and talk about their great "blood work."
They'll also ask you to provide "peer reviewed studies" to support your claims that the food you eat can affect your long-term health, while attributing their views to universal truths.
Umm...excuse me?0 -

I don't bash clean eating. If that's your thing - more power to you.
I do, however, bash the self-righteous, pompous *kitten* who try to tell me it's the ONLY WAY to be healthy.0 -
Great. Yet another *****-fest about "clean" eating wherein nobody provides a coherent definition of "clean eating".0

In late...... brought some popcorn and a gazelle.......

If you're not washing your foods before you cook, then you eat dirty.
"Clean Eating" is BS. You have a liver and kidneys which "clean your system. The same goes for "Detoxing" your body. Bunch of crap. While they "work" they do more harm. Do your research.
If you want to "eat clean" then eat foods without the processed crap. Easy peasy.
That is what I mean by clean....non processed. I don't get where ppl are talking about cleanses and stuff. Lol. Is this the enema thread? Whoops my bad lol
where do you draw the line at "processed"...how exactly are the black beans in a can so much filthier than if I spent all day making my own black beans? When it comes down to it, everything has some, at least, minimal processing just to get it to your store.
For me...personally....the line is drawn at what I can afford and what I can't live without.
Boxed dinners (hamburger helper etc) I will not buy. I do buy organic cereal but rarely eat it (cereal doesn't agree with me).
I buy my veggies, fruits, and eggs from my local farmers as much as I can. I get organic if I can afford it.
Protein....Can't afford the high dollar stuff.
Ben and Jerry's....will not live without0 -
