WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR DECEMBER 2013

December greetings from the snowy mid-coast (Chicago). New here on MyFp. Call me Gladys (my fun screen name). I have not read through the masses of posts here, and I don't know anyone yet, so I'll just send a big "hooray" to everyone on their accomplishments. Me? This month I resolve to avoid holiday-goodie gulping. A smidge of dark chocolate, a handful of nuts now and then is all. And you know, I've been doing pretty well at that! Who knew? Have also been lap swimming and spending time on the elliptical. I started with about 20 lbs of flabby midsection, batwings and jowls that I would like to do without (lose any more and I will be underweight!) --- but they're ornery ones, sticking with me no matter what. So here's to trying yoga for the first time in my life; stretching more; and getting serious about adding strength training to the usual cardio. Cheers, all!0

:flowerforyou: Welcome to Stevie Renee and Gladys. I just started Yoga, and like it. Next week will be the last session until the new year. Stevie. I know what you mean when your body gets used to something, the next step is to step it up
:grumble: I ended up missing jazzercise this morning. Had a bad sleep, and then slept in. However, I ended up meeting up with DD and DIL and - more importantly - their adorable toddler boy and baby girl, respectively. Yummy kisses and hugs make my day.
:drinker: Tonight has sushi on the menu. And I have the ingredients out to cook a batch of spaghetti sauce for tomorrow and freeze some as well. DH had made a large pot of chicken/broccoli soup, so we will be freezing that as well.
It is still rather frosty here, although the wind has decreased. Okay, off the PC. DH is just coming home.

:flowerforyou: DeeDee, I’m glad you’ve found a way through your holiday stress…….holidays should be something that makes you happy, not a source of stress……walking is a great way to sort things out.
:flowerforyou: Katla, what a surprise that the boat parade went on after all…..”stubborn insanity” sounds like a perfect description
:flowerforyou: Stevie Renee, welcome to our friendly community. I love to walk. I walk a lot with my dogs. My friends know to meet me for a walk rather than a meal. I recently fell and hurt my back and had to cut my walking back but I’m on the road to recovery and am back to walking 10,000 steps a day. I have a pedometer that I put in my pocket first thing every morning and carry it all day long.
 Michele, 94 pierogi, that’s an awesome cooking accomplishment
:flowerforyou: Sylvia, our dogs sleep with us and never go out without us. We have a small fenced area in the back but when we take the dogs out there, we stay with them. I, too, don’t understand people who leave their dogs outside
:flowerforyou: Margaret, you’re amazing to be able to get up at 7:45 and be somewhere at 8:30. I have gradually moved my bedtime earlier so that it’s easier to get up early.
:flowerforyou: Viv, sorry you’ve been sick…….watching movies is a great way to spend time when you’re not feeling well.
:flowerforyou: Jane, I love your never-ending attitude of gratitude.
:flowerforyou: Angie, I know you are enjoying your gardening work while so much of the US is having freezing rain, snow, and super low temperatures…..wow, a four hour walk....we don't have roses because the deer come around and eat them.
:flowerforyou: Jill, the first change I made when I joined MFP was to log my day’s food ahead of time and stick to the plan, no matter what…….no grazing, no accepting food offered to me (no matter how benign)….some days my calories have been high but I stay with my plan…..I found out that once I allowed myself one deviation, I kept on going.
:flowerforyou: Gladys, welcome to our friendly, supportive community….the women on this thread have helped me reinvent my life….keep coming back and start to read the posts, and before long you’ll feel like we are family.
 Friends are here and we’re watching our NFL team play a tough game. I made beef stew for supper for us. One friend brought Jake some homemade fruit cake…..fortunately I don’t like fruit cake some I’m not tempted to eat any.
 This morning I had no deadlines to be anywhere so I planned to walk the dogs one at a time for as long as they wanted…..instead, it was cold and Jake had built a fire so each one chose a short route and wanted to come home…..I felt great so I told Jake that I was going for a walk by myself and enjoyed the luxury of walking and listening to music for 45 minutes.

Hello Ladies, and welcome to the new folks! :flowerforyou: Just a quick check in today. We had 6" of snow fall today, and they're calling for 1/2" of ice overnight. This cold, wintery weather makes me want to eat comfort foods. I broke down and had a cup of hot chocolate, which kind of hit the spot :drinker:
Almost time for me to turn in. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend0 -
I like your goals for December! I am struggling to get back on this myself. I had lost 30 lbs and it has slowly crept back on. Hoping to connect with wonderful people on MFP to get back on track! I wish you well on accomplishing your goals!!0

Tonight was fun. The three grandkids came over for about three hours while my son ran an errand. I made sloppy joes for the kids and mrs. Dash tacos for me, but they each ate a taco and left the sloppy joes. Plus they emptied a big container of applesauce. And I made chocolate chip cookies (3 dozen) and there are three left on the plate, but I think hubby ate a lot of them. After supper the kids and I sat down with some big paper and pencils and had a great time drawing and playing tic tac toe. Sleet has started to fall, so I'm anxiously awaiting a call from my son to say they got home ok.
Molly was locked in her crate when the kids were here, and she was so traumatized that she wouldn't come out after they left. I had to coax her out with treats, and then she cautiously looked all around to make sure they were gone. Bruno does just fine with them. I wish Molly was more socialized, but when she was a puppy we didn't have any kids around. Now I think they scare her.
Welcome to the new folks. This is a great group. I'll look forward to learning more about each of you.

Jill in MA - You're so lucky to have a Polish community. The closest Polish deli, and that's a very small one, is in Greensboro, maybe 1/2 hr away,. Actually, It's a Polish/Russian deli. So I make do as best I can. Sauerkraut with sardines and mushrooms doesn't sound bad at all. I bet it's pretty good as a matter of fact. I love sardines, I love mushrooms, and I love sauerkraut (just wish it wasn't so high in sodium), so sounds good to me
Gladys - welcome! I don't feel yoga alone is enough exercise, but to me it's a great compliment. Good luck to you on avoiding those holiday goodies. Good for you adding strength training!
Speaking of goodies: just came back from the Newcomer holiday social. I had snow peas, corn, a small piece of beef (not all that great if you ask me so I'm glad I only took a small piece), raw carrots, raw broccoli, sweet potatoes (I think they put some sort of sweetener in them, but not sure what, did avoid the marshmallows on top, tho). Just had water to drink. It's sad that it seemed that I had to constantly ask for a refill of water, and the last time I asked they never brought it. Then came home and made these cheese crackins. Basically, it's shredded cheddar cheese and flour rolled into a ball. Have them in the freezer, will freeze them and then I can have them for appetizers.
kymw - welcome. There are a lot of awesome ladies on this forum. As a matter of fact, ALL of the ladies here are awesome.

another weekend draws to a close and getting ready for a full week of work and activities; can you believe only 2 more Sundays before Christmas! I did get some of my decor out; going light on the decorations this year or at least that's the plan
@DeeDee sounds like that walk was inspirational; glad you are feeling better and enjoyed decorating the tree.
@Heather so sorry to hear of the illnesses of your loved ones; seems especially difficult during the holidays or it was for me
@Kaitla, the Christmas ships would be a beautiful sight to see; I've only seen pictures - good that they could put on the show.
@Stevie, welcome to the thread - walking is good!
@Sylvia, hope you get some restful sleep tonight.
@Gail, Church concerts are Christmas are such a joy; glad you were able to go.
@Margaret, we got up in time for church but with all the ice on the drive we still stayed home.
@Viv, hope that tummy bug is gone away soon so that you can enjoy the holiday season.
@Jane, hope you enjoyed the pot luck dinner at church.
@Angie, all the best with your roses - they have become my favorite flower.
Okay I am stopping here to check out the local news then off to bed as I have an early rise and a busy week ahead. I hope everyone is warm, safe and at home.

Ok, starting over. Still recovering from my broken ribs. Back to my starting weight. Game on.0

morning ladies,
well snow is starting, then turning to ice.. I am going to have to do something interesting to get some exercise in, I could put my sneakers on and racewalk in the house, that would be interesting:laugh:
I have to make my lunch and Tom's lunch for tomorrow,go in to work at 10.. I really dont want to brave the bridge to go to the gym, I can handle snow but Ice scares the daylights out me..
I am hoping the weather holds out for Saterday because we will be leaving here anywhere between 3-4 am,it is a long day of driving..we will be stopping at South of the Border,it is the on the border of North and South Carolina0 -
Ok, starting over. Still recovering from my broken ribs. Back to my starting weight. Game on.
Welcome back! I hope to see more of you in the future. How did you break your ribs?0 -
I'm on here trying to avoid doing my plank! I will do it - promise!
I also commit to having an alcohol free day today. I really want to get this half pound off. I seem to have gained back a half as well, so I need to lose a lb! Last night I did a bit of a mini binge on cheese and mints and I think the alcohol lowers my willpower, so I will not have it tonight and will do every other day dry and only one drink on the other days. I will do that for this week and see how it feels by the weekend. DH thinks I'm mad for worrying about the weight loss as I am really fine as I am (BMI 23.89), but I have a tidy mind and would like to get down 1.5 lbs to make it a round 4 stone lost. I will just have to up my game. Like a lot of you I am in the house more so not doing as much general moving about, apart from cooking. I do my exercise, but not a lot else. I think probably that is why I am not losing, apart from the evening mini binges! ! !
Michele and Jill - your Christmas Eve feasts sound amazing! What a lot of work! Do you then have to cook Christmas dinner the next day as well?
All my prep is done for the Christmas period. Only last minute stuff to do, but I will have Christmas Eve afternoon to preboil potatoes and parsnips. I always find I have the actual festive bits under control, but the days around it I completely forget about and have nothing to eat as I don't want to 'start' things. As we have different people over five dsys this year I'm a bit better prepared, but still 'lunch' can take me by surprise, before there are any leftovers that is. DH told me thst there is a possibility that DSIL may come down on the Sunday night, but he wasn't to tell me as she didn't want me to start worrying about food for her!  So it's scrambled eggs on toast for her then!
Welcome new ladies! This thread is wonderful to belong to, with so much sharing, joys and sorrows. I also use it for accountability - if I say I'm going to do it, then I will.
Planking calls! I cannot put it off any longer.
Heather in mild and sunny Hampshire UK0 -

Have a wonderful day today! Drink your water:drinker: :drinker: :drinker: and log your food!!!

DeeDee in cold, rainy, icky but not icy NC0 -
I am up and having my warm lemon water, this will be something I continue to do the rest of my life I think.tons of benefits..
slept real well last night.and have to work till noon today.. then up to my dads after we will be giving him his christmas present early we all chipped in and got him a t.v
we will have to make 2 trips to my FIL because we ordered stuff for christmas for him and it probably wont come until next week sometime. Tom the DH is half way there at work so if it comes I will just have him take it over after he gets out of work
Tell us more about the lemon water benefits.Do you use fresh lemon or? Do you have the lemon water once a day? Does it matter what time of day? Do you use sweetner? Enough questions  Love it when we find something that works. Pat C0 -
Pat C-just reading up on the internet, the DH thinks im just a dope, because I am trying to take better care of myself, and he says you can't believe everything you read on the internet..
I use both lemon juice, or since the DH brought lemons from out lemon tree in Florida, have been using those, I use warm water and squeeze 1/2 lemon in there ,I don't use sweetener, but if you cant handle the tartness,I would use a little bit of stevia or local honey.
Best results I guess are to have it first thing in the a.m and then right before bedtime..
the benefits are a huge huge boost to your immune system and really flushes you out. lots of articles on the subject.
I have to say ,I have been doing the lemon water for what?6 months? I have not had a cold, flu, any sickness what so ever.. I am knocking wood(my head lol)
it is real yucky here this morning.. so I am planning on trying to race walk in the house, I can go through all the rooms in a circle.. so will do that for 45 minutes to get my exercise in...0 -
Good morning from wet and chilly NC;
I sure am looking forward to some Carolina Blue Skies! I couldn't live somewhere where it is grey all the time. When I came home from church last night the neighborhood entrance sign wasn't on. It has just been fixed and then it dawned on me that it wasn't on because it is solar powered and I guess no kind of battery back up. But that is just how dreary its been here.
Have any of you heard of "steamed eggs"? Eric & I were looking up soft boiled eggs. I do love a good fried egg so I thought soft boiled would be a good alternative. Alton Brown had an article on steaming them. Its takes 9 - 11 minutes depending on your heat source & how you like them. They were perfect.
Went to our Women's Fellowship Christmas party last night. We didn't have as good a turn out I think because of the weather. I had a NSV by not over indulging. I knew it was lasagne so I logged that into my diary ahead of time. Put a generous amount of salad on my plate and got a teeny dessert. No bread. Monday is my weigh in day and I have "released" (I liked that from whoever it was that said it) another #
Tonight we have dinner out with my husbands men's group at a Greek restaurant. They do have their menu on line so I can plan ahead. Tomorrow night my ladies small group is coming here. Oooh it looks like maybe I should do some extra exercise today & tomorrow. ( That'll be me when I am finished)
I just started doing the plank. 35 sec. How long does it take to get up the the 90 sec hold?
I hope everyone has a good week and makes wise choices.0 -
Thanks for the info. Most men think anything women do for better health is dippy. Maybe they are afraid we will want them to join in? Thanks again.I have some shopping to do,mostly gift cards, then done.DDs in laws have a Christmas cookie exchange this wk end,to which it seems I am a member:laugh:
Not looking forward to having cookies around, but need to put my big girl panties on & pass them by.DH is always afraid I will give them all away. Will do my best! Pat C0 -
Good morning,
Have to keep it short. I am subbing today.
Kymw glad you are here.
Gladys from Chicago just went to a wedding at Salvage One. Had a blast!
Cindy there was a recent posting on doing the plank and building up your endurance. If you do a search on plank you should find it. There was also a link on form
My intentional act of kindness today will be to give out as many genuine compliments that I can.
Have a great day.:flowerforyou:0 -
I go to the hand specialist today at noon PST. I'll be back with a full report after that.:flowerforyou:0

Good morning,
thanks for the welcome. This is my 2nd post. I did some trot/walking today. Feels good to push, little as it is, it was still a push.
Had a nice low sugar breakfast of chicken, salsa and avocado. Plenty of water too.
Need to break out the tea as its cold in the house.
Well, enjoy your day all. Lets make good choices!0 -
Welcome to Stevie, Renee, Gladys & kym. come back often and post, we love to get to know you.
I'm still here but MIA. I'm not sure where the days go but they seem to fly by. I think most of it is that I've finally weaned off one of my meds. I just don't want to be taking meds if I don't have to. It was an old school anti-depressant that was to help with sleep & pain but was not helping with either. I've been on different doses for many years and on a minimal dose for over a year.
My DD & I put up the tree this weekend (we always wait until after her birthday). I have 3 more gifts to get and a few more stocking stuffers and I'm done. I'm going to start wrapping tonight. Oh yea, I still have to get gift cards that I send to my niece & her 4 children. I spoke with them yesterday and the boys are so excited about Christmas and the baby girl is almost walking and trying to keep up with her 3 older brothers. She calls them all brotha doesn't matter which one she's talking to or about.
I really don't like this time of year, it was never a good time growing up. Holidays were a time for someone to get drunk and violent resulting in the police being called. I vowed to make sure that my kids would not have the stress on Christmas, so we stay in our PJ's all day and have pizza & wings for dinner. We watch movies, play video games and eat when we are hungry. This year I'll make sure that the fruit & veggies are all cut up and on trays and I'm going to make chicken strips so I don't have to eat wings.
I think I finally got caught up on reading all the posts. You ladies are a very busy bunch.
It's chilly here in Ontario with a little bit of snow but now it's turning to rain...hopefully not freezing rain.
I have been going to the Y every day, Sat & Sun were aquafit.
Stay safe.

Hi Barbiecat - that is awesome! I am new here again - just trying to make it happen! Looking for the over 50 crowd as well.
Hope you have an awesome day. I am in Charleston SC and it is going to be 75 here today - crazy weather!!! Take care and keep up the good work.0 -
Hello Barbie and all. I am new to your group and have tried to read all of the December posts.
My name is Brenda, from Toronto.
Recently, I retired and I am looking forward to the next chapter in life. I've been with MFP for over a year and am looking to finish what I started.
In December, I will walk at least twice a week and log in every day (except when I'm out of internet range).
Barbie I loved the dancing poodles! Belated Happy Hanukah.
Juanita in Sudbury I love the picture of your Christmas cactus. It was my grandmother's favourite plant. Sorry to hear of health issues with family and friends.
To all the new ladies: Hello, I'm also looking to get back on track.
Michelle/Dixie 2111 For walking in the winter, I like Leslie Sansone's videos - her 2 mile walk takes 30 minutes and her 3 mile walk takes 45 minutes. She gives very sensible advice throughout. They are available for purchase or view on You Tube.
Pat/Phoo Love your picture. I will try to figure out how to add one.
LindaS Good for you for exercising despite thumb issues.
Sylvia I recall that when I wasn't feeling well, I couldn't focus on anything. Listening to music helped me.
Heather from UK I loved your description of your photo on the wall while you row.
Laura I loved your regal before picture and your awesome after picture.
Renny My Mum is about your Mum's age. It's hard when they are far away.
Sandy from ON Kudos to you for going to the Y regularly.
Hoping to get to know all of you.
Brenda from Toronto
(Hoping you'll save the Mayor Rob Ford jokes until I post a few more times )0 -
Hi to everyone! Welcome to all the newbies! This is a great bunch of women, I love it here but just don't have the time to answer everyone individually. I had a bad weekend food-wise but a great weekend otherwise! My son came over (lives 2 hours away) and spent the night Sat. He and my DH spent Sat evening cutting up veggies for a specialty dish my DH makes and my DS loves. He wanted to learn how to make it. It was nice seeing them working in the kitchen together. Made me all warm inside. Cold, icy and just plain yucky outside today as Grandmallie mentioned. I made it to Curves, then work without any issues, but it is still freezing rain outside. I dread the drive home!
I am so behind on the Christmas decorating, package wrapping, and food prep! I want to get it done but just don't seem to have the time! When I am home, I am working on school work, and house work. Weekends, my DH wants to spend out shopping with me so never have time to do anything I want to! Frustrating!!!
Well, I only gained 1/2 pound this week instead of lost, but I think that is water and because I was not very 'good' this weekend. I am still trudging alone however and hope I will see a drop next week.
Well, got to go back to work! Stay safe, stay warm, and be careful in the winter weather everyone!
Rita from 'yucky' CT0 -
Just a quick check-in for now...
Woke up to a good 1/2" of ice on top of the 6" snow that came down yesterday. It started melting off so I came in to work a few hours late. The roads weren't bad by then, just slushy and wet. We're supposed to get a bit more snow tonight into tomorrow morning, but we'll see!
I'm very behind on decorating and baking, but I just can't seem to get in the mood to do anything! I usally bake cookies for the neighbors, but I really don't want the ingredients in my house...I'm afraid I don't have the will-power to resist the goodies! Does anyone have ideas for inexpensive/homemade gifts for friends?0 -
Drove today for the first time since it snowed on Friday. Had just let DH do all the driving. He is doing karoake tonight at a retirement home so it will be a good time for me to go out to Best Buy or Walmart and see if I can get the kind of cell phone I want to buy for him. It has to be able to accept the minutes from his tracfone. Looked out the back door today and there are no footprints in the snow out there at all except these foot prints going to a tree. They look bigger than a squirrel. HMMM?
Going to go the the hospitals annual Christmas dinner on Wednesday. Not sure why I said yes. I know what they serve and it's either turkey that already has a gravy over it or ham. But us old nurses get together once a year and the one who retired last hadn't been able to actually go down to the dinner for several years. If you can't go down some one from dietary will fill a plate for you and bring it to you. But you have no control over what is on it and the way nursing is now you just go into the break room and eat a couple of bites then leave. Repeat until it's finally gone. The hospital's management staff are the ones who serve you in line and then go around and offer coffee or tea refills. They used to offer invites to anyone who was in the quarter century club, in other words if you have worked there for 25 years. But they stopped that. You still get an invite if you retired from there. I was [art of the quarter century club but had to quit due to my MS when I was 49 so I did not retire. My husband really didn't have any good memories of the working there, except of course meeting me, and he doesn't use his invite. So I will use his.
I really need to start getting all these Christmas presents that I so proudly bought on line wrapped. Usually I am one of those people who are shopping the last week before Christmas. I am queen of procrastination. We don't even have our tree up yet. I had some mail order medicine that was supposed to get last Friday but because of the weather didn't get here. The company told me just not accept it when they delivered it today since it has to be refrigerated and has been sitting in the UPS office since Friday. But I also have 3 other Christmas presents that should be here any day. The delivery came when I was at the Y and my husband told them I was not to accept it. So now I don't know if it was my medicine of a gift.:grumble: I guess I will have to call UPS.
Stay warm and dry, drink your water and keep on smiling. Joyce, Indiana0 -
Hi gals. I see I have several pages to get to , so I’ll try my best. Today was very frustrating at work. I couldn’t get anything done because I spent the whole day putting out fires. At least it will warm up tomorrow…all the way up to 25. It was freezing in the building today. We got about 3 inches of snow and it was the light fluffy kind, so not hard to deal with. My new tires did fine, but since the roads were cleared pretty well, it’s hard to tell.
Joyce: hope you got a good night’s sleep.
Michele; don’t know why but I have never wanted to eat cookie dough
Gael : welcome aboard! Looking forward to getting to know you
Renny: hooray for being warm!
Heather: I saw those houses on the news….how scary!
DeeDee: those calzones must be like Chinese fortune cookies…full of messages LOL. I am totally stressed out as usual because it’s December.
Cindy: good thing you could rescue hubby; ended up being two good deeds in one!
Barb: so sorry your sons don’t come by for some of Christmas!
Sylvia: take care of that migraine. I hope you figure something out to do with the dogs.
Katla: no doctors in the urgicare? I agree though, all those places are full of sick people to avoid!
Sue: sending good thoughts your way for when you have your MRI
Texasgal: I saw your weather on the news! Very different for you guys!
Stevie: welcome to our group. Love your pic..my SIL collects them (not live ones LOL)
Viv: glad to see you again and glad you feel better!
Jill: coming to Omaha. How fun! Send me a message if you want to get together! One of the big things that is probably new since you left is the holiday lights downtown. There are over a million lights in the trees around Gene Leahy mall that get turned on Thanksgiving evening and left on til after new years. They ever made some national magazines.
Gladys: welcome to our group
Kymw: welcome to you too!
Carole: you are still suffering from those rib fractures????? Holy cow. I’m so sorry about that. But I am glad to see you back
here again
Sandy: I am not glad you had bad Christmases growing up, but I am SO glad to find someone else who feels the same way I do.
I really, really, really dislike Christmas and all it entails. Since our kids had never had a Christmas when they got here, I vowed to make Christmas a wonderful experience and I think I have failed miserably. I try so hard to not let it affect me and when it does, not to show it, but everyone notices me hiding and staying away from everyone.
Diamond, Brenda: welcome aboard!
Everyone sounds so busy! I guess I should say I am grateful that I have a new=ish car with new tires that gets me around and I don’t have to wait for a bus or depend on others for transportation! Take care, Meg from the freezer in Omaha0 -
bump till tomorrow0

I have no idea why, but for some reason today I have felt downright giddy with just a general feeling of happiness. Just glad the migraine is gone maybe. Rehab went well today, and I pushed myself just a tiny bit farther than last time and nothing bad happened. Went shopping for groceries, took hubby to lunch, and was just about home when the snow started falling. Our yard looks like a winter wonderland. Not deep snow, but very pretty. The neighbors are home and their dogs are inside their own fence. Bruno didn't destroy anything today. All is right with the world.
I made sweet and sour chicken for supper, so now I have extra for two or three more meals in the fridge. Later tonight I will make some pecan pralines and some pumpkin cookies for hubby's department holiday party. Does anybody know if butter, cream and eggs mean something is not vegetarian? His department it full of people with special dietary restrictions. Some eat no beef, some eat no pork, some are vegetarians. Oh well. I'll just provide a list of what's in them and people can decide for themselves.
Well, stay warm ladies!
