40lbs v Sugar!!

Welcome to MFP! You'll find lots of snarky people here, ignore the snark, and take the good advice and you'll be successful.
I tried no sugar a few years back and I felt really tired and run down all the time. I did it for about a month and then started eating sugar again and gained all the weight back
Currently, I tend not to eat ice cream/candy etc... but I will have it as a treat once in a while IF it fits into my calorie count for the day. I definitely still eat fruit and vegetables that have sugar in them all day, every day. Sometimes I put honey in my tea, too. I'd say those are my main sources of sugar, and they don't make me feel over loaded with sugar, and give me enough energy to last thru the day on my calorie deficit.
You can view my food diary and check it out for ideas. I have been losing about 1 lb per week since January 1st.0 -
I'd recommend that you read these rebuttals of the "sugar is bad" argument.

You have to think of a message board for what it is-- a group of people from all different backgrounds with all different viewpoints and all different personalities. It's essentially like walking into a crowd and just shouting out your question or statement. You're going to get all kinds of responses.
Take the helpful ones, leave the rest.0 -
Im shocked by the negative comments that poster had to endure. Actually what she asked was a sensible question. Its known that reasonable quantities of sweet fruits cause an immediate insulin rush, and that the excess sugar in the fruit will be stored almost straight away as triglycerides in our fat stores, instead of being burned for energy. It is a good idea to keep to a max of say one fruit a day.
Sorry you were the object of these peoples wrath ,poster! I dont know what their problem is. Hope you wont be disheartened by it!
Most people can manage more than one piece of fruit per day and still eat a nutritious healthy diet - the official Australian guidelines actually encourage people to try for 2 fruits per day (and 5 vegetables)
Also there was really very little snark toward OP in this thread - just people civilly questioning and disagreeing.
Not sure what the problem with that is.0 -
Maybe you meant refined sugar, because not eating sugar in ANY form sounds unreasonable. The most successful methods involve permanent lifestyle changes. I'm not sure how sustainable a zero sugar lifestyle would be. Are you willing to do this for the rest of your life? Otherwise, when you stop, chances are excellent that everything will go back to the way it was before you started. Good luck, though. I am a fan of reducing refined sugar, but I just couldn't maintain zero long-term. :flowerforyou:0

There is a thing called constructive criticism.0

Sugar avoidance is completely illogical and stupid if you don't have a condition that needs you to do that. Fruit avoidance is unjustifiable in every possible way. You're probably going to keep it up for 1 week tops, and then you're going to fail and binge out and become depressed/demotivated, and probably end up being less healthy during and after this little phase. The whole point of MFP is so that you can track your food intake and manage your calories (which is the only thing that matters in terms of body composition), while practicing moderation while still eating foods you enjoy.0

Hi All
I have just OFFICIALLY started MFP today and I'm going to avoid all sugar even fruit. I'm sure I crave iy and want to give it a go!
Has anyone else done this and if so how did they find it and what results if any did they find?
Thanks for reading!!!!

Your newsfeed, filled with your friends, is the safe place to vent, ask questions, and just be yourself. When you venture into the forums, you have to expect differing opinions, scientific facts, & ALL kinds of people.
OP, this is actually very good advice. If I have a question I ask it on my FL or I research it through Google and the search function in MFP.0 -
So much for 'my fitness 'PAL'!!
You don't need to quit the website. Just stay off the Community section if you can't handle objections to your diet plans.

That is NOT an objection there's only a couple nice people on there and it was my first time on the forums so I didn't know what to expect! DEFINITELY NOT this!!
I lost all my confidence well most of it when I put weight on so things like this are just another knock, before I put the weight on I wouldn't of cared less!!0 -

Sadly there is a differing level of intellect from some of the people who post on these general forums.
I know it was your first day on the post and maybe didn't read duplicate posting on the general rules (I to was guilty of this on my first couple of post).
However there are members on this forum that probably have never read the rules. For example the first rule is:
We want the MyFitnessPal Community to be a fun, supportive, and friendly place for our members and we ask that all members follow our site guidelines: We want the MyFitnessPal Community to be a fun, supportive, and friendly place for our members and we ask that all members follow our site guidelines:
and
When someone posts something you don’t like, please either contribute constructively or move on without posting. You always have the option to ignore posts from specific members. Posts of members you have ignored will be hidden from the topic. Out of sight, out of mind.
Are they going to change - I don't think so.0 -

Actually, the person said "now I don't like you," not that they hate you, and several people said it was uncalled for. And the person only said that because you had posted the question in pretty much every forum, which is against the Community Guidelines.
To be honest, you really did not get rude comments. You admit that your confidence is down, and I think you interpreted people disagreeing with you as being delivered in a much harsher tone than it actually was said. Disagreeing with you does not make people rude or mean, and you probably came in here with a pretty biased stance on sugar based on that book you read, making you overly defensive to questions and criticism about your decision. If you read through the forums, you'll see responses like these to every post. Not because people are being mean, but simply because people don't sugar coat things (pun not intended, but I'll take it).
You're very focused on what other people have said to you, but they only react to what you give them. You went from cutting out all sugar, to only cutting some sugar, to maybe doing this for a week. You have to admit the idea of eliminating all sugar from your diet is unrealistic, but that's the first thing you put out there, and that's what people responded to. You can't really get mad at people because you didn't convey yourself clearly in your posts. If you feel something was really uncalled for, report the post to the mods and put the user on ignore so you don't have to have any interaction with them.0 -
I seriously doubt there is a topic made that has not been made several times before by this point.0

How absurd and stupid to think that everybody find the same things as rude and insulting.
If the OP said she has found some of the responses (several on the first page) as insulting and insensitive, then isn't it just as rude and insulting to suggest that it's the OP's fault because she is too sensitive.
Wouldn't the more grown up thing to do be to reflect on what has been said and maybe re-phrase our critics in future posts.
But then that would mean we would have to give a damn about other people and not just put ourselves first.0 -

It also really helps when people are quoted correctly. OP has changed the original comment about "not liking her now" to something that is wrong, but followed that with the word (quote).
You can perceive comments any way you choose, based on your experience. If people break forum rules, the mods will deal with them. I think the main take away from posts like this is - we are a part of a large, very diverse group of people on MFP. In dealing with this type of forum, you should expect to have differing opinions - AND differing ways of expressing them. Your idea of a grown up is not someone else's idea of a grown up.
You might say that your continual scolding of people in threads is not productive either.0 -

I know nothing about excess / lack of / and effects of different sugars on my body but one thing for sure....
The topic of sugar really gets the MFP community worked up into a hyperactive frenzy and brings out the worst and best in people.0 -

Look saying to someone new who has juster started 'I now don't like you' is CHILDISH and NOT positive criticism!
I apologise that my post has been so controversial but it was my FIRST ever post and I didn't know that EVERYONE reads EVERY topic on each of the boards that is why I posted it on a couple to target different people as I am desperate to get advise with being new.
I hadn't read ALL of the terms and conditions and didn't realise I broke a rule!
For goodness sake people all I'm after is help not my confidence being battered down more than it already has! Well done for that some of you, you've really made me feel secure about myself! I honestly feel quite threatened.
I can take criticism but would like sensible criticism and advice whether positive or negative so I shall rephrase now I've gone away and had a good think about my plan, so here goes:
'I am contemplating cutting refined sugars out of my diet and wondered if anyone had done so as I understand that you can get some side affects.
I have also been reading a book 'Sugar is poison' by David Gillespie and he mentions that fruit should be kept to a bare minimum as especially certain fruits contain a lot of sugar 'fructose' and if too much fructose is digested then required by the body it is turned into FAT!
Could anyone advise me as to the best way to go forward as I have tried cutting out carbs, lots of different diets but still stuck at the same weight!
I've always been a size 8 and was very fortunate but over the last 2 years I have had medical problems which no fault of my own has resulted in me putting 4 stone on which for my small frame is a huge amount! I would LOVE any help, advice, firmed adds, positive or negative feedback and again apologise to the nicer people on here for posting more than once.
Can I say a special thanks for the people (tennis dude etc) for sticking up for me. If it wasn't for them I was about to delete my account and forget the whole thing.0 -

I certainly understand your frustration in the way this post has gone. However, I would advise you that this is the way of the forums. All forums - not just MFP. You have a tremendous audience when you post something. People respond in all different ways. Some will give you advice, some will not. What you can learn from this experience is that it's pretty much a crap shoot. Take what you can from the thread and move on. Letting it hurt your feelings or cause you to leave MFP is not productive.
Here's my advice for you. Add people to your friend's list that have the same mindset you have. That way you have an audience you can trust, that knows you & that you can hear.
Just for the record, I started on MFP 22 months ago. I lurked the forums and read everything. I realized pretty soon that a lot of the people that are snarky, also gave smart advice. Some of them are now on my friend's list. They never sugar coat ANYTHING and I appreciate that kind of honesty. It's what has helped me lose over 100 pounds. Find the people you can hear. Good luck.0 -
to the OP...
The reason you got a lot of people saying no don't do it is because we know that limited food and/or food groups from your diet is not sustainable.
Think about it this way...this isn't a diet...it is a new way of eating for life. Sugar is not the devil, sugar alone does not cause weight gain...no food does it is the quantity of the food you eat not the types.
If you have a medical condition that requires you to limit certian foods or types of food that's fine and understandable...but if you don't there is not reason.
Look at this new thing you are doing as how you are going to eat for the rest of your life...just in smaller portions. As you get closer to maintenance you increase your portion size (and calories) and instead of re introducing all those foods you cut out back in you are already eating them.
As well if you cut out foods you like/crave/love you are more likely to binge on them at a later date, feel bad about yourself and fall into old habits again because you feel like you failed so why bother going any further.
Yes these words come from experience.
As for your book...sugar does not turn into fat and make you fat...excess calories make you fat.
As for advice eat at reasonable calorie deficet,
set your weekly weight loss goal at about 1lb a week (I suspect you don't have 100lbs to lose),
exercise if you want and eat back part of those calories, if you don't want to exercise don't...
Log everything you eat and weigh your solids so you know how much you are eating
Choose the correct entries...by that I mean don't use ones that have the words generic, homemade or start with an asterik (*) they are user entered...check nutrional values and confirmations
If you can't find a correct entry make your own based on the label.
Losing weight requires one sacrifice...eat less calories than you burn that's it.
Now for the forums random strangers on the internet shouldn't have that much affect on your self esteem and confidence...I mean they aren't in your life, and shouldn't be able to dictate your mood...if they can...stay out of the forums...this was tame...wait until someone is really mean (where they get removed from the forums for their post)
There are a lot of very smart people here who know what they are talking about and don't sugar coat it...(excuse the pun)yes they are blunt (I've been accused of it as well) but all in all they are too the point and right.0 -

Cutting back on sugar is a very good idea (IMHO).
I personally only eat Veggies, moderate fruit and as a treat dark chocolate (there will be other food I eat which has added sugar, but I do not eat these in any great volume so the amount is negligible).
You may experience side affect (non of which are harmful to your health) for up to possible 3 weeks - everyone is different, mine lasted 2 days.
This transition is only whilst your body adapts. I personally eat about 100g of carbs a day, which allows me to keep my insulin levels low and therefore my body is better adapted at burning body fat as fuel (I only eat extra carbs when I am doing high activity sports).
I would recommend anyone (Who wants to) to give a try for 30 days, it certainly will not be harmful to health and may have a positive outcome.

I would recommend anyone (Who wants to) to give a try for 30 days, it certainly will not be harmful to health and may have a positive outcome.
Good luck.
I'd rather run and squat and enjoy my donuts. And, frankly, I perform much better well fueled and there is no way that I'm giving up food groups/types in some Quixotic quest to find something wrong that isn't there.0 -
I seriously doubt there is a topic made that has not been made several times before by this point.
Of course.
But that's not the same as one person posting their own same question in multiple forums.
Cutting back on sugar is a very good idea (IMHO).
I personally only eat Veggies, moderate fruit and as a treat dark chocolate (there will be other food I eat which has added sugar, but I do not eat these in any great volume so the amount is negligible).

Nobody is asking you to give up sugar or any other type of food if you don't want to though? Not sure what your point is?0 -

My comment was to the person I quoted - I realise you have got the message about multiple postings now.
Was not defending the 'I don't like you' comment at all.
Although I do think you have taken it too much to heart and I do still think your plan is misguided.
Despite what your book says, it is not necessary to limit fruit to one piece per day.0
