Food prices that piss you off

PB2. I'm addicted to it. But $5 seems a lot to pay for peanut butter.0

Not sure about the situation in the US but here in London all the meat substitutes are so expensive! I have been vegetarian for 14 years but since I'm tracking my macros and my student budget is very limited I had to start eating chicken every now and then to get the protein in and not going bankrupt. It's against all my beliefs and principles but the desire to achieve my goal is stronger..0

This is a huge pet peeve of mine! I don't like the tap water here, so I buy water bottles... the cheapest per quart are the 16oz bottles... WHY???? I go through 3-4 a day, it adds a lot of recycling, but I end up spending twice as much if I want the 1 liter bottles... and the gallon bottles are not exactly handy to keep on my desk and have a sip from.
It's DUMB.
Or like, buy those reusable cups/bottles and fill them from the gallon? That won't waste as many bottles, either.0 -
In my country, all healthy food, if you find any, are expensive since they are imported. I pay around 7$ for 1L of Almond Milk I find that ridiculous !0

Nut milks have only just started being reasonably priced in the UK over the last year. When I first discovered my dairy allergy in 2011 I was paying £3 ($5+) for a litre of the stuff. I couldn't afford a dairy allergy!
Thankfully, now they've taken off and dairy-free alternatives are available everywhere for half the price or less. It can just take time.0 -
Whole Earth peanut butter used to be a similar price to all the other peanut butters, about £1.20 - £1.50 a jar. Then about 2 years ago someone somewhere twigged that they could charge "organic" prices for it because it has no sugar and other additives added, so overnight it seemed to jump to about £3+ a jar. Wheareas you can still get the sugary ones like Sunpat for about £1 to £1.50 a jar.0

I have a Brita Filter. I filter my water and I have two water bottles that hold about 3 cups each and I fill those with the filter water and take those to work with me.0 -
Almond butter...$8-$9 for a 12 oz jar wtf0
-
Fage. It just went up to $7 at my store. I only buy it if it's on sale, otherwise I buy the store brand, or whatever else is on sale. Also, Quest bars. I miss Quest bars!
$7 FOR YOGURT? WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
I want to mail you some, jesus.0 -
Salmon!!! Insanely expensive..0

In my area, blueberries and avocados. I just can't afford a tiny baby box of blueberries for 4 bucks. . _. And avocados here are around 1.50 per fruit. o _o It's strange because I live in California, and we grow that stuff here to export to other states. Maybe my idea of "expensive" is different from other people's?0

Whoops, I meant to edit my post but ended up quoting it! *slinks away*0

Avocados, asparagus and strawberries. I would eat them every damn day if I could afford it. :sad:0

Whole red snapper. I love grilling whole fish, and red snapper is so super tasty, but I have to drive to the next town and buy from Whole Foods, and they only carry large ones, so they end up about $30 for one fish.
See also, lobster and crab. Way too expensive, way too tasty!0 -
Did someone say salmon? Because SALMON! I'd inhale it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I could afford it0

Wild Caught King Salmon. $17.99 a pound !0
-
Chicken. Being on disability makes it VERY tough to afford even something as simple as chicken.0

and cashews! My gosh I love cashews, they're the peanut's more attractive sister0
-
Greek yogurt. $1.25 for a cup of Chobani?0
-
Peanut butter without added sugar, why are you harder to find and cost more?0

Hey, for steak try and find a good local butcher. You can normally get really good quality meats there for cheaper then the stores.0

Pretty much everything is way too expensive. Gotta love economic inflation. What really bugs me though, is that the price of buying fresh/organic food is astronomic compared to buying pre packaged junk food.0
-
Brussel sprouts - over $5 per lb in my area. Even in season. I sitll buy them, but it's ridiculous.0
-
Organic almond flour...impossible to find unless you buy bulk from a grower...usually mail order. Too expensive for me.0
-
The prices that really piss me off are:
$18.99/bag of cup4cup gluten free flour. (Not optional, I have a celiac kiddo
Start mixing your own gluten-free flours. You can control the ingredients (organic, certified for celiac, etc.) and make mixes that are good for certain things like soft bread. Yep, that cup4cup is super expensive.
I'm not eating grains right now, so baking with almond flour and coconut flour which is also expensive, especially non-GMO and organic.0 -
.
Whole roasting chickens!! - between $15-$20 per chicken.
Where do you live?
I can get a whole chicken for like $6
I pay $18 for Mary's organic air-chilled whole roasting chickens from Whole Foods in Pasadena, California.
Regular defrosted chickens are in the $6 range.0
