thanks Michelle, I have often said that is my motto....turn a negative into a positive. My husband is the exact opposite and I think he gets tired at times that I am always trying to either see the positive or trying to make something good out of something bad. It's just a happier way of life.

Joyce, you and your hubby sound like me amd mine, I find it much easier to look at the good in things and ge is t b e opposite. Maybe I wear rose colored glasses ...it just seems easier to find the good.
I have a bit of good news, its the power of M.F.P..my sister has started as well..I am so pleased I am so looking to have a live person to shere the path with !
I worked out today with my weights, only for a short time, as this girl is not going to injure herself. I am just a little bit feeling my walk yesterday in my shins...I want to be in shape but must remember to take baby steps.
Tomorrow is my last day off before the start of my work week on Friday, gardening is in order here.

Debbie from Alberta: Set goals that include logging every bite even if you go over, moving more, and drinking plenty of water. Stick to them. If you mess up today, tomorrow is a new day. Don’t beat yourself up. Get food scales and measuring cups to measure your portions. Portion control was the key to success for me. I always ate good food, but ate too much. Some people choose to avoid certain foods that trigger binges. Do what is right for you. This is a new way of life, NOT a punishment. Stop by here often for support.:flowerforyou:
Today I had a fabulous conversation with DD over the telephone. It made me feel so good to simply chat. We were hoping she could come here for the Fourth of July, but airfare is totally unreasonable right now. If we’d gotten tickets months ago it would have been different. DH and I also worked on the boat. We discovered the batteries are not charging and we have to get the situation fixed ASAP. That will clearly be tomorrow’s main project.

Thank you for your concern about my fall. You’ll be glad to know the swelling is way down and the bruises are healing fast. My hands have no visible signs of injury, but I find they hurt when I’m in bed at night. Have started wearing a soft brace on each hand which helps a lot.

Good morning everyone!
Just a morning greeting. Had to get up early after a restless night, and then my colleague texted me that she'll be half an hour later than usual. It's good that I have half an hour extra before I have to leave, but if I'd known I could have set my alarm for half an hour later... :grumble:
Oh well, at least I have time for a quick post here and a bit more attention to hair, makeup etc. Always makes me feel a bit better.

Viv - it is so good to see you back.:flowerforyou: I have missed you. The good news about gaining weight is that it easier to lose it! Good for you for starting logging again. :flowerforyou: This slimming business is a life sentence - I am still logging every day even though I am at target and have been at it for two years. If I have a rare day when I don't log I still add it up in my head. Sometimes when I am cooking a complicated recipe I jot each item's calories down in a jotter I keep in the kitchen, then I put it in under Quick Added Calories. I often use that to save time as I know the calorie values of most foods having been an on off dieter since I was 18 and bought my first calorie counting book. I hope I won't be an "off" dieter ever again. :bigsmile: Make sure you weigh everything. I now do a LOT of exercise, but I started slowly just doing a little and would have just laughed if someone could have told me what I would be doing in the future. I did not like exercise, apart from dancing and swimming. Hated getting hot and sweaty!:laugh: I still would prefer to slob about, but I so love the results that it keeps me going.
I know you have been depressed recently which makes you not want to bother about anything, but you now have an opportunity to start again. If I can do it anyone can. I am putting an old photo of me up as my main for a couple days to show my body before I lost the weight. That was March 2012. I got even heavier between then and June when I started my diet. If I can do it, anyone can. I was almost crippled with pain and weight related problems.

it is raining here this morning, woke up later than I wanted and didnt get to the gym, and didnt walk, I am thinking of going to the gym early afternoon.
I am going out with my friend Doris to a thrift shop or 2, then get home, looking to return the FitBit Flex, at a Sports Authority around here,instead of sending it back.. my husband is a weenie0 -
:flowerforyou: one of the practices used by Overeaters Anonymous (the Twelve Step program for people who believe that they are powerless over food) is to plan the day's food and call someone and make a commitment to stick to the plan for the day........when I started MFP, I logged my food plan for the day and then made a commitment to stick to the plan no matter what......if a loving friend offered me something I declined....if my hubby offered me a bite of what he was eating, I said "no, thank you".......I examined my food plan and looked for higher calorie items that I could eliminate and replace with something lower calorie ones.....I did it one day at a time.
:flowerforyou: I have since learned many other practices, behaviours, and attitudes that have helped my efforts and many of them have come from women on this thread or books you have recommended to me.

Rori: I wore a brace on my left wrist for weeks after my fall last December and the hand specialist instructed me to avoid putting weight on it in a bent back position for a whole year. I’ve been doing yoga on my closed fist for months. Down Dog is reasonably easy, but wall exercises are very difficult due to lack of traction on the backs of my fingers. One day at a time things are getting better. I hope you will heal faster than I but plan on the same sort of patient persistence that this whole process of getting healthier and losing excess weight requires.:flowerforyou:

I so appreciate all of the wisdom you share. It is a rainy day in Oklahoma and I am loving it. I had a day off yesterday to play with Hubby, we went out to lunch and saw a movie. Today I will do weights and work out my arms and legs, then on to the treadmill.

Good morning! It promises to be another scorcher here today. My daughter sent me an article on SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) that applies to me since I am more prone to being depressed in the spring and summer. It's "nice" to know that I'm not alone!

I have a confession to make. I, too, have been dealing with bouts of dizziness and being lightheaded, although neither of those really describe the sensation. I think my mountain term of "swimmy headed" describes it best, but I can't even explain that term. LOL I finally decided to go to the doctor and have an appointment this afternoon. To the best of my recollection, this all started after I got the injection in my knee a couple of weeks ago. I felt really odd right after the injection and they kept me lying on the table for a bit until I felt better. I don't know if there is any correlation, but... I have a feeling he's going to tell me that I'm too stressed fatigued and to slow down. I don't see how I can, but if that is what it is, I guess I have no choice.
Oh, and in my saga of the paint, I went to pick up the new paint this morning and he actually gave me two gallons instead of one, so I will have paint for my new place whenever it's time!
Sleeping is still not great, but a little better again. I had weird cramps last night. I typically get them in my calf, foot, or thigh and that's is not frequent. Last night, it started with a cramp just where the top of my foot meets my ankle. Walking didn't help very much but when I sat down, it traveled out to my toes. I walked some more to get that part placated, sat back down to rub the foot/ankle, and then a cramp hit me in the back of my knee! I'm glad I have two hands for rubbing!! Needless to say, it took a while to settle back down after that, so I'm still very sleepy.
I suppose I'd better try to get some work done. I need to write some checks and work on a newsletter.

Carol sorry about the leg cramps. I get those at night sometimes too. I notice when I drink too much coffee, don’t get enough water, not enough Magnesium, and over work myself they are worse. I am sleepy today too because we had a bad thunderstorm that woke me at 4:00 and every time I was just about asleep again another thunder boom. :yawn: I am glad you are getting that dizziness checked out.

We are having a very wet June here. Raining again as I type. Hopefully it will let up before I leave for the eye doctor. I did put a lot of grass seed down about a month ago, so our grass does look lush.
Today I will take care of my eyes so I wake to better eyesight.

Carol - the physio guy said they could only find some minor calcificstion of the knee cartilage so he reckoned it is the patella that is not running smoothly in the groove. As my trouble is very intermittent I think this is right. There is no treatment for this and I have had the problem since I was 16. At the moment my knee is fine so he recommended knee and leg strengthening exercises. I wouldn't do them if I had a flare up. :noway:
The first one was really deep lunges, making sure the knee doesn't go over the ball of the foot. The bent knee should be only about four inches off the ground.
The second one was, I thought, the more effective. Stand on the affected leg with the knee bent and the bottom sticking out. Again, you don't want the knee to be over the toes. With the other leg you can waggle it about, use bands for stretching, or, I do what he suggested, which is write the alphabet. I could really feel the muscles around my weak knee responding! I think this is a good one and you can do it anywhere, any time.
I have previously been doing squats with a 20 lb weight, about 15, and clam exercises, where you lie on your side with bent legs and open and close the knees. Also other yoga things that work the leg muscles, including balancing. On the sofa at night I stick a cushion under my knee and raise my foot and tense the muscles.
So I will continue to write the alphabet! ! ! ! ! ! !
My son at last responded to a text last night, much to my relief. He is in the grip of severe depression and has not been answering emails, calls, facebook or Twitter. His text said he was signed off work for two weeks and had changed his meds as the previous lot didn't suit him. Just relieved to know he is alive.
I have the goat curry cooking and it is filling the house with tormenting smells!:sad: Tonight we have a lamb and pearl barley risotto, which is my attempt to find something other than curry or pilaff to do with left over roast lamb. It is all prepped and ready for its final flourish this evening before the England game in the World Cup. If they lose this one then it's all over. :ohwell: I don't watch it as I can't stand the agony, but DH will be upstairs cheering them on with a glass of beer. They are playing Uruguay.

Hello everyone, my name is Renee'. I need motivation and support. I start and stop alot. I need to lose 40 pounds for health reasons. Using the mfp tool and disciplining myself to prepare all my meals I have lost 10 pounds so far. However, the last couple of days, I've realized I haven't lost anything and may have actually gained a pound back. I try not to step on the scale but once a week, but noticed my belly was protruding so stepped on it this morning and it said I had gained a pound. I am trying to maintain a 1200 calorie diet, aged 52. Looking at my food diary, I realized that I haven't been drinking as much water. Could this be the issue? Also, I haven't exercised in years. I walk our two greyhounds once a day for about 20 minutes, but not much exertion in this. How did folks get started (I would like to do things at home not a gym). Any advice would be appreciated. Hello from South Jersey. We had some nasty weather last night, but nothing like you all experienced in the Midwest. Having grown up there I know how frightening storms can be and how fast they blow up. My thoughts and prayers are will you all. Not a good reason to be on the world news!

Renee’, I noticed that when I try to eat less, but not exercise I don’t lose any weight. I have a fit bit that I use every day to track my activity and try to get at least 10,000 steps. My friend and I walk at lunchtime or I walk by myself is she is busy. At home I have an elliptical. I also use some hand weights and do some ab work. Trying to get into Yoga, but I really think I need to join a class to learn proper techniques.
Heather, Glad you heard from your son and I hope that he gets better.
Carol, hope your dizziness is nothing serious and that your cramps go away.

Katla, I know how hard it is to miss your child. My DD lives in the Midwest and I miss her very much. We do talk, email, text and everything, but it’s not the same. Now I know what my mother felt when my DH and I moved to California 35 years ago.

Welcome Renee, first I have to tell you that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE greyhounds! I wanted one really badly but hubby said they were too big, but then we saw a whippet at a shelter and it was the perfect compromise. But someday I will get a greyhound. We'll need a bigger doggie door. Second, ten pounds is a great start! Don't be so hard on yourself. One pesky pound may come and go a few times, but just look at the bigger picture and see that you are still 9 pounds ahead. Don't get discouraged! Water certainly could have something to do with it. Try to log water right along with your food and see how much you really are getting. I didn't log my water, thinking, Oh, I drink tons of water, but as it turns out I wasn't drinking much at all. Do you drink diet soda? Sometimes that hurts more than it helps. As far as exercise, do you belong to a gym, or the local Y? That helped me a lot. What health reasons do you have for losing? Mine is heart and blood pressure, so I'm on lots of meds and some of those contribute to weight gain, so take a look at your meds too. As far as the belly protruding, when you lose weight your body sort of reconfigures itself and things that seemed less prominent become more prominent. With me, my stomach was the least of my worries. I carried most of my weight on my rear end. And my "top" was bigger than it needed to be. Now, that rear end seems to have magically disappeared, my "top" has shrunken, and so my tummy seems more round and seems to stick out. It seems different than before. So you may be having some of that happen. It's sort of an optical illusion. My tummy is probably smaller than it was but it seems bigger in relation to the rest of me. The fat will come off where it wants to come off. All you can do is keep plugging along. Move more and log your food. It really does work.
Diane, Welcome to you too! I just got a fitbit flex too, and I love it. Several of us here have those. Have you hit your first goal yet? When that thing buzzed for the first time on my wrist I almost wet my pants. It startled me. Yesterday I was sitting on the couch and checked my e-mail to find a message from fitbit saying I was almost at my goal, so I got up and walked more till it hit the goal. So it really helps give me incentive.
Carol, good luck finding the source of your dizziness. It really is hard to describe feelings like that sometimes. I have the same trouble. It's hard to describe but you know it's not quite right. I hope they find the problem quickly.

Great advice. I stopped drinking soda (diet or otherwise) because I'm convinced the carbonation makes me hungrier. I have not felt "hungry" on my lower calorie diet; but haven't started the exercise part yet.
As for greyhounds, we lost a beloved german shepard mix pup to cancer. When we were ready for another dog, my son suggested a greyhound rescue. We got our sweet boy Native. We all work, so he had some anxiety separation issues, even though our home is brimming with 7 cats. So about a year and half later we adopted Charlie. They are such a joy. They are really great pets. Ours do not use cages, but big pillows. We have a set in the family room and our master bedroom. They pretty much follow us where ever we go. During the day they our in our bedroom. They are great with our cats; Charlie does chase any neighborhood cat that ventures into our yard. I think our cats lure the other cats into our yard to see them get chased (rotten beasts...). If I knew how to attach a picture, to the email I would.0 -

:flowerforyou: Renee, look for a book called “Strong Women Stay Young”……it has a lot of information about the value of strength training and a great workout to get you started with exercises that can be done at home without lying on the ground that can be adapted to all fitness levels….we all started by making one small change at a time.
:bigsmile: The morning line dance class was fun….we learned another new dance and danced a bunch of old favorites……I have an hour by myself (Jake is off with a friend) to eat my lunch of leftover chicken and cauliflower then I’ll go off the afternoon practice with the performance line dance group.

Hello for hot and steamy Indiana. 97* heat index. Today was my MIL birthday so we went out to the cemetery. I don't know why DH has never wanted to go to his father's grave site. Maybe I need to ask him that. Maybe it's because his Mom probably has only one person who goes to her grave, my husband and I. The middle brother might go, I'm not sure. She was just all alone in this world except the two oldest sons and myself. She did like the nursing home staff and even though it was rare for her to let herself develope a friend she lived at the nursing home for almost 10 years and she had several friends there. When she first went to this nursing home she developed a friendship with a resident which really shocked us but she died long ago. She was the oldest of 12 children and all that were still living were at her funeral and seemed like they loved her but they never showed it.
Hope every one stays cool and out of the path of any storm.

Hello to all: Wow, lots of newcomers. welcome!! I am trying to get caught up at home after being on vacation. DH is gone to a Masonic meeting out of town. Nice to have the house all to myself. Went out to see my horse last evening after being gone for a week and she came running when I whistled. Seems she missed me or maybe just the senior feed she gets when I go to the stable.:laugh: I am singing this evening for a women's group at church, mostly hymn-tunes. The director has a habit of changing things around at the last minute, I hope not tonight.:grumble:
We had an insurance guy out to look at the house after the hail storm we had a couple of weeks ago. Seems we have roof, siding and gutter damage so will be doing some repair work this summer.:sad:

Michele - I was eating mainly gluten-free because my friend that I was visiting has celiac disease although not severe and has to watch what she eats. We made gluten-free pizza one night, very good.

Well, I went to the doctor and he has given a preliminary diagnosis of stress. Like I didn't already know that! However, I ended up giving them three vials of blood and a urine specimen before I left so he could check out other things. It makes me feel better that he took me seriously and is actually investigating stuff instead of brushing me off with "just stress" as a diagnosis. I REALLY like my doctor!
He also warned me that I needed to do whatever it took to get enough sleep, including taking the Ambien that I don't really like to use. He said that proper sleep and rest was a major key in getting the stress under control. Also, losing the ability to walk like I was accustomed to because of my knee took away a lot of the innate stress relief that I was receiving from the exercise. All in all, he approved of my efforts to reduce the stress and that some of the stressful events were just naturally over with. He said that my routine wake up at 1:30 a.m. may very well be a PTSD problem from my daughter's emergency appendectomy last month since that is the time they actually took her back for surgery. I hadn't thought of that one. :ohwell:
Now I am putting in at least a nominal appearance at job #2--even though I am the only one here! I will use the quiet time to do some non-stressful things.
