Soda
Sub (if cold) or Grinder (if hot)
Fireflies
I'm from Connecticut. Also, the little pieces on top of your ice cream are sprinkles! Always sprinkles.0 -
LOVE this thread. I have lived in Washington DC (and we call it DC or the District, not Washington), Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Only the tourists ever say pop or youse! I say sofa, soda, (shopping) cart, sub, firefly, tumblebug/roly poly, liquor store, breakfast/lunch/dinner, restroom, and y'all. In Nashville, no one understood me if I said "nabs" which everyone back East calls those packets of cracker sandwiches. I had never heard of "meat and 3" till I lived in Nashville. I say put up for put away, house shoes, purse, and everyone everywhere I have lived calls laundry soap "washing powders" even if it is liquid laundry detergent.0

pop. subs. lightning bugs.
This. I'm in Buffalo, NY
I grew up in buffalo and I would say firefly. It wasn't until I moved away that I heard lightning bug.
Also, for all you Buffalonians out there, I think you're the only ones that call pig in the middle 'pickle' in the middle.0 -
Lifelong Virginian with New England roots.

Haha. Yes. I do slinky. . Both types.
Too. Funny.
By the way, I am a RN and my husband is a paramedic. Not a firefighter, just a paramedic. He hates fire.0 -
I'm in Ireland.
Do you say Pop or Soda? Neither. Fizzy drinks or Minerals.
Hoagies or Subs? Subs, but use the word hoagies for a specific type made with steak.
Lightening bugs or fireflies? Don't have these but know them as fireflies.
Thing you push in the supermarket - trolley
Place where you buy liquor - off-license
Thing you sit on - couch or sofa0 -
Toronto, Canada here, we say pop/soft drink, sub and firefly (not the TV show), Mixed on couch/sofa and buggy/cart (occasionally trolly) in the store. I was born and grew up in England until 18 and now Canadian and have parents who are now U.S. citizens living in Florida so excuse me for being linguistically confused lol.0

Scotland, in the UK.
Do you say Pop or Soda? We tend to call everything juice or fizzy juice.
Hoagies or Subs? Depends where you are, I call them Subs, loads of folk say hoagie.
Lightening bugs or fireflies? Never seen one here so never had the need! But I'd say fireflies.
We have so many words that sound bizarre compared to other places in the world, lol. My favourite odd one is 'piece' which we say instead of sandwich! "D'ye want me tae make ye a piece?" "Aye, geez a peanut butter yin, ta." XD0 -
GA girl everything is a coke, subs, lightening bugs
Yuup, ya`ll got that?
But in the swamp, we also call em "flicker fly`s".0 -
I'm from Central Florida and I grew up using "coke" for just about any soda. The first time I saw a firefly I was up north visiting my grandparents and I spent hours catching them and then later releasing them. I also grew up calling sandwiches "subs" but I heard "grinders" and "hoagies" plenty from people who had moved here from elsewhere. There was a special little sandwich shop in my home town that opened and sold "grinders" and man were those delicious! The owner would also load me up with the veggies she could no longer serve to feed my rabbits. Man did those little buggers get big. Oh, and I laughed as a young kid when I had a new friend from New Jersey use the term "sneakers" in front of me for the first time. I used "tennis shoes" for those. Lots of trash talk ensued. I've lived in enough places now where I tend to use all of these terms interchangeably.0

I'm from CA and have always said:
soda
subs
fireflies
and I say couch not sofa
Ditto above in Missouri - in the city - out in the country the only exception is the occasional Sr. citizen still calling their couch or sofa a davenport.
And it is Missoureeeee - not Missourah
No its pronounced as "Misery", and what the heck is a davenport? lol I do hate when people say Missorah too, very annoying!0 -
just wanna mention by the way, anyone who hadnt heard of hoagies should be ashamed of themselves..does the name Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable mean nothing?!?0
