I personally think a better question would be:
Shouldn't we be breaking our dependency on needing "sweet" flavors altogether?

Sugar, be it natural or artificial gives your body no nutritional benefit so if you're trying to cut it out of your diet to lose weight, you're better off just getting rid of your desire for sweet flavors for good and instead putting things in your body which will actually benefit it.

    So, fruit is not beneficial?

Well this is false. There's a reason our bodies evolved specifically to taste sugar. Because it is actually a very important part of normal human function. If we didn't need it, we wouldn't taste it. Case in point, cats are obligate carnivores, they can't taste sugar at all. Your brain, your nerves, your muscles; they all run on glucose predominantly, and the most efficient source of glucose in your diet is sugar.

To be fair I didn't clarify by "natural sugar" I didn't mean sugar in fruit, I meant sucrose. By sweet flavors I mean the junk in junk food, not the sugar from fruit or milk which are items that despite their sugar actually give the body nutritional benefit.

A pop with artificial sweetener for instance doesn't give any nutritional benefit at all and to be so dependent on a sugary item that one has to find a fake fix rather than just learn to make better, healthier choices is a willpower issue that should perhaps be fixed if wanting to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

What additional nutritional benefit does water give over and above diet soda? (my point here being, you do not have people telling others to avoid water).

Also, if something is not "unhealthy", why should they forego? Liking something is not necessarily being dependent.

"Healthy" is not just about your diet (individual components or as a whole) nor is it even just physiological.

    Awesome post OP.

From now on we have a post to link to every time there is another "diet soda" thread.

    :drinker:

ETA: Congrats on getting it stickied.

I drink diet soda - I agree it doesn't provide any nutritional benifits.
I don't think anyone is arguing that it does - or that they drink it for the nutritional benefit.

I like it and there are times when I drink it - just because I want to.
I wouldn't say that makes me dependant on it any more than liking and sometimes eating, say, bananas or weetbix, makes me dependant on them.

I don't see this as a will power issue at all - I'm not trying to give up diet soda so not really a question of will power.

A skilled researcher need not be a PhD holder to "play". Beware of the fallacy of equivocation and setting meaningless standards.

The aspartame doom train was started by a chain email, written by an author who didn't even exist. It was another case of something said on the net that was repeated so many times people believed it.

Aspartame is not the Grim Reaper, but it no health benefits either.

I feel there may be some people here that need to enjoy life a bit more than worrying about what will kill them quickest.

Diet Coke & Science fan here... Loving Aspartame... Loving Life... My highlight of the thread was seeing that someone doesn't eat barbecue food in fear of chemicals.. Oh Dear God!

Just off to sip on a cold Diet Coke :)

Personally, I'd rather wear sunscreen and not risk getting sun caner. No, I doubt aspartame is causing cancer, but I'd rather avoid a man-made chemical like that.

You're slathering yourself in man-made chemicals and accepting their risks (are they as well tested as aspartame?) to mitigate a natural risk factor.

I'm going to trust my doctor and my body. I have been tested no less than three times for MS. It was getting bad enough that we were looking at the 4th MRI because no one could believe that it wasn't showing up. My doctor, a wise and dedicated woman saw a bottle of soda in my bag. "What is that?" She explained in detail what Aspartame does to the brain as well as the muscles and organs. I was carrying a diagnosis of fibromyalgia already.
I heard all the scientific propaganda when Aspartame was being pushed on the food industry in order to push out saccharin. It is another 'follow the money' issue. I still like my Diet Pepsi but I know when I give in for more than a week or two I get more headaches, more leg and joint pain, and my thyroid (already being treated) goes off.
I'm not a super gung-ho organic food fanatic, but I have more and more food allergies popping up, some with life-threatening reactions. I have discovered some of those allergies are not the food, but the additives and chemicals.

I am using fewer and fewer chemicals in my home and finding great health benefits. But, I never want to have that pain, dizziness, loss of control, and life on pain killers again.

If I follow the money to infer where and what the scientific propaganda on Aspartame is, it takes me to the far larger sugar industry.

Luckily I can just see what claims are repeatable in studies with proper controls and what ones aren't, and what the controls tend to be like regarding certain claims.

you can find a whole bunch of links with researches that show all the danges of aspartame, including the weight gain through insulin spikes, and there is not only one, you've got 8 studies with information.

    Enjoy your sweet death.

Did you look at the links? How many of the cited material were actually published studies that showed aspartame to be dangerous in humans?

How many were just links to other articles?

Doctors say the aspartame is bad.

The guy who taught me Organic Chemistry (of which I remember NONE, except that it was the most horrible, difficult and boring class in the history of the world and I hated it and even got my only damn B, so don't come at me with ether, double bonds or alkenes, I don't remember anything!) held my bottle of Diet Pepsi up for all to see when he ranted about aspartame. (And he *****ed at me when I showed up for the next class with another bottle, lol.)

There seems to be a lot of different opinions on the stuff.
