I just started C25K and am really hoping this will be the time I can learn to enjoy running! I've found all your posts very inspiring. I had been thinking about starting for a while and then ended up signing up for a 5k to support a charity I volunteer for - it's not till November so I have plenty of time. I've been exercising pretty consistently for nearly a year and have lost 35lbs but still have 70lbs to lose. On vacation recently, walking around a hilly city, I realized how much my aerobic fitness needs to improve - carrying the extra weight doesn't help of course.

I'm actually excited to do W1D2 tomorrow! I am running outside (no gym membership) so I feel a bit of an idiot but try to remember that I'm lapping everyone on the couch!
Signing up for a 5k is great motivation! Take it one day at a time, I know you can rock this!

General advice is that no one will be watching you. Most people are too busy thinking about themselves. Some people will wish it was them, some people will be in awe of your effort, most won't notice. Get out and enjoy it, from someone who wanted to hide in the gym. I wish you great success

Thanks! I will do - I'm lucky to live somewhere beautiful (if a bit hilly! ) so it's much nicer being outside!

Wow, so many inspiring stories!

I did week 4, workout 1 yesterday and couldn't do the 5 min. runs. I made them 3. I just wasn't feeling it overall, though. I haven't taken a day off and probably should. And it might be time to start repeating weeks, too.

Thank you - I really want to get to the end of the program this time and am looking forward to being able to run for more than a minute at a time!

^^ This statement is completely right. Now as a runner when I see others out running it makes me smile inside knowing what they are going through. Before I was a runner I was the one wishing I was those people. Run and be free!

I noticed there are several different C25K apps. Do any of you have a favorite?

I personally use zenlabs, simply to use and is now fairly bullet proof, oh and it's free. You can pay and go add free.

Arg :( Couldn't find Rockmyrun on my market for Android. Booo.

I also use the Zenlabs app, have had no problems with it and it syncs to my music lists. Win/Win

I am on day 2 of week 2! Im really enjoying myself so far. I also do it 5-6 days a weeks instead of 3. I feel like its not as hard to move on the the next week, that way I wont have to back track as much. My first 5k is in October, not trying to win, I just want to finish. I am also one of those people who used to hate running, and now I look forward to it everyday, and though I'm tired, I'm a little sad when its over.
  • Thanks for the words of encouragement!

I just started the other day... I am on day 2, week 1 and plan to do it in a few hours after a little nap. I honestly surprised myself and felt like I could run more, but I didn't want to overdo it on day 1. I use the Ease Into 5k app.
  • I am halfway through week 3 - so far so good.

If you finish your 3 days in less than a week do you recommend moving onto the next week's program or repeating the same week workouts?

If you feel you can then try to move on as soon as you can as it's easier than having a long break then going back into a new week. Make sure you are still having rest days though and are not over-doing it. :-)

I overdid week one and have shin splints now. Loved it though, and can't wait for my leg to heal so I can continue. I never thought I would love running. Always avoided it.
  • Thanks for the advice.

I currently have a shoulder injury which meant I wasn't doing anything because I didn't know what to do!
I have been doing the c25k program on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday and then not doing anything for the rest of the week beacause... well... I didn't know what to do!

As you can see, I need clear guidance.

General advic e is to run every other day. Your body gets stronger on the rest days. You run to stress it, you rest to make it stronger. If you want something to do, low impacts exercises, just walk. Just don't over do it.

I personally had some success today, W5D3 nailed and then screwed down. I went out for a session this morning, had seen on Strava that there were some segments locally, so decided I would run one of them. I felt so good when 10 mins came up that I made the decision to do both. By the time I had finished I had done 26 minutes, so went another 4 and did the 30mins. I now have a benchmark for the end of series 30 minute run. So despite dreading the twenty minuter, it was a pleasant experience in the end. I continue to wish you all success. Next session Sunday morning.

    Congrats, ftrobbie and Carla!

I was going to take advice and do a rest day but my Fitbit totals are scary low if I do. Thought about using the pool but it's a little dirty and I'd miss my app, music and book. So I did week 4, day 3 again. I might have a problem. :embarassed:

Thanks, just be careful. I have been where you are in the past, the enthusiasm for stretching the boundaries is quite rightly to be admired, encouraged and supported. However just like many New Year Resolutions, unless you are extremely dedicated it will become unsustainable. It is written as a 3 workout a week programme on alternate days because running does stress the body. I trained for national rowing championships in my youth and we did volume and HIIT type sessions. However we frequently did too many or too long HIIT sessions and ended up in a worse place than not doing them at all. I have learnt C210K for me at least is a 3 day a week programme. Now I am also a hypocrite because did I follow it exactly yesterday?. Well no, do I fell sore today? Slightly, do I regret it? Emphatically no. You live with your body, you know it's limits, just don't overdo it, get too sore and then have to take time out. That is when is when the doubts start. Look forward to each and every session with energy that can make it better than the last one. If you want to do something, go for a walk, park in the wrong lot and walk, take the long route rather than the direct route to somewhere. At work I leave for some meetings a couple of minutes earlier than some colleagues in the same office. Why? Because they will walk one side of the square, I will do three and get an extra 800 steps on a pedometer. Good luck to you and hope you are not too sore.

I'm still at such short, slow running amounts it practically is a walk. I think it's ok to do 16 mins. of cardio per day.

Good for you, I wasn't sure how far you had progressed, doing a fair bit of walking is actually very good. A lot of bodybuilders walk for an hour in the morning to burn fat without taxing their muscle systems. I went walking for 10 weeks before starting C210k and was getting upto 8 miles a day. I started c210k because I was concerned that my kids were starting to show the ability to outrun me, both speed and stamina wise. Enjoy
  • Hi I only just joined this site but am just starting week 4 of C25K. I really dislike running but being determined to lose weight and having signed up for a charity event in sept I thought now was a good time to get started. The first week was hard and I hated it but
the 2nd week was better and now I have finished the 3rd I'm afraid I have turned into a bit of a running bore. I really like being out early in the morning and now the aches and pains have subsided I actually enjoy it!! I have been dieting for about 3 months also and have lost 10lbs so this is keeping me motivated. I will never want to compete though, this is just a little time for me to be alone and reflect and exercise. Wish I'd started sooner x

Welcome to the site, please update us on your progress, I think this has genuinely helped people who think they cannot do it. Well it helped me.

    Good luck on your journey

Hello again everybody, I just started Week 4 yesterday and it was sooooo hard. I am determined to keep at it and will do day 2 tomorrow but I think I may be stuck repeating this one for a while. I just couldn't manage 5 minutes straight. I am 'Power Walking' the hills as I can't avoid them and am struggling (as I said before) to run them. All this support is brilliant!
  • I was up to week 5 then stopped for a couple months, going to start again. I love it. It's exciting to know that I am actually running! even if it's slow lol - great job on starting and wishing you smooth sailing through the rest!

side note - I use zenlabs as well.

Oh I agree that walking is great! See my user name! I have been an avid walker for many years.

I've been repeating the week 4 workouts since I don't feel ready to progress to longer runs. Yesterday I did a 45-minute Cardio Coach workout instead. It was nice to do some hill/incline intervals for a change.
