What's the REAL reason you want to lose weight?

Health.
I realized that my weight was catching up with me and I could no longer enjoy 10 mile hikes in the mountains without severe knee pain and it was hard to hike with other people because I was so slow. I also couldn't ride a bike up even the slightest incline. I realized that even though my bloodwork was perfect, that my 360 pounds was catching up with me.
I didn't love being super-morbidly-obese but I do enjoy being slightly fat. I want to get down to a "chubby" 150-180 pounds with my 5'5" frame. Thinness is not a goal for me. From an aesthetic perspective I would be horrified to be thin the same way many of you would be horrified to be 150-180 pounds! This is for MYSELF only. I don't find thin people unattractive or ugly, it's just my own personal preference for my own body.
If aesthetics were my reason for losing weight, I would have lost weight 30 years ago.. it wasn't until my quality of life started to suffer that I decided to really put my nose to the grindstone and get serious.

I don't want to be thin. It really doesn't suit me. I just want to be in the middle of my healthy weight range so that I feel more comfortable in myself.
I love my bootcamp classes and they are more enjoyable when I don't feel my belly jump up and down every time I do a burpy. I can give more energy to my workouts now too and can talk to my friends while running around the track to warm up!!
I also have Crohns disease so getting my nutrition right is really important to me. I want to be able to head out for a day with my family without having to worry that a sudden flare up will leave me in pain and abandoning my plans.
I'm nearly there now. 11st and a size 12 (irish size) seems to be my ideal weight @ 5ft 8"...0 -
To do more outdoor activities with my family. I want to snowboard! I want to live a lot longer. I want to go to a regular clothing store to buy clothes.0

I want to be a better me!0

This. I don't want to be self conscious in a bikini. I want to look great in any situation.0 -
Been trying to get pregnant for a while now, and would love to lose weight to maybe increase my chances of this happening and to help have a healthy pregnancy.0

Honestly since you asked I'm really not sure. I don't give a rat's *kitten* about someone who looks good. I care a lot more about people who show their worth by what they do to take care of others and make the world better. Being thin does nothing to show how one cares for the sick, the poor, the unwanted children etc etc. You know, things that really matter to take care about other than making oneself attractive in the eyes of current culture.
I guess my current reason has to do with me being beyond just obese, and the health implications of that. Yes I want to get back down to as trim as I was before, but again I really don't know why I care. Probably just because I know that the world is shallow and my attempts at advocacy are better received the more I fit the norm of "beauty". How sad is that.
ETA: whoops almost forgot- how "amazing" can you possibly feel if you don't even find yourself beautiful? I mean, really? You are just screaming lack of self-worth and it's hard to rectify that with feeling "amazing". Amazing people know their worth. They don't question their beauty. I know quite a few of them and a lot of them are "obese" and are quite aware of how beautiful and awesome they are.0 -
To make me a healthier, happy person all round really. I hate feeling sluggish and overweight. I love having a tight tummy, relaxed and also being so tired from exercising that I have a proper nights sleep .
It would be nice to be able to show my ex-husband how well i'm doing without him but to be honest, I don't actually care what he thinks any more - i'm more concerned keeping my new (ish been living together for two years) younger boyfriend happy0 -
I have rheumatoid arthritis so the less of me there is to carry around on my joints, the less pain I'm in.0

Partially for my health. My dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at 42, and has dealt with other major health concerns over the past four years (he's 60 now). I'm 33 and decided I didn't want to be like that at all.
The other reason is so I can feel comfortable enough to start dating.0 -

My parents both have had weight issues, and I totally get what you're saying there. Plus, I'm an RN, and I agree with the nursing thing. Wait 'til you start working as an RN and notice two things:
1. There are really no overweight elderly people (they don't live that long; obesity tends to limit your lifespan to about 65)
2. The health problems and terrible life of the obese patients
that's enough motivation.

I did it for health reasons, so that I would be able to spend as many quality years as possible with my family. Being thin is just a side effect.0

I've been overweight my entire life and I want to know what it's like to be thin and have a flat stomach.
I want to be strong and muscular.
I want to look great for my wedding in Spring 2016.
I want to wear a bikini for the first time ever.
I want to be able to do strenuous things (yardwork, etc) without getting exhausted.

I realised I'd split the crotch of 80% of my jeans, and 10% didn't fit anymore. And also I noticed my jawline was way less defined. Finally I had jumped on the scales and I'd just tipped over 14st, 196lbs, when 4 months before I was 13st- shocked me into sorting myself out! So vanity reasons really, but having the health benefits helps me keep going.0

Is it actually for your health?
Yeah...I didn't set out to lose weight...I had a lot of bad blood work and basically I was looking at being very sick in the near future and likely dead by 60 if I kept going the way I was going. In 2 years time I've completely turned my life around. Losing a good 40ish pounds is nice, but being healthy and fit is far more important to me. All of my blood work is now in the "optimal" range and I'm off all of my meds except my blood pressure medication; my hypertension is apparently more hereditary than diet and exercise related.
In my experience, long term and sustained success requires this to be about more than just losing weight...because dropping the weight is just the beginning of a much longer journey.0 -
Finding out that I have stenosis in my carotid artery and am at risk for a heart attack or stroke.
There are lot's of other reasons I want to lose weight, but that's the one that really got me moving.0 -
To look good in clothes. I don't give a damn what I look like naked anymore. Nobody sees it but me.0
-
Tired of feeling uncomfortable and unhappy with myself. And I'm like more clothing options.0
-
I just want to feel good about myself when I look in the mirror.0
-
Vanity reasons mainly. I want to look in the mirror and be pleased with what I see. I also want to live a very long life.0
-
Honestly? I'm not sure. I'm not at a "healthy" weight. But ALL of my blood work is perfect.
I'd rather be strong than thin, which is why I've been working out.
Also, I have to fit into a bridesmaid dress in November that's just a touch to tight for me :P0 -
Partially for vanity.....
..but also almost every woman in my family ends up with some long term issue like high blood pressure or diabetes post pregnancy due to becoming pregnant while already unhealthy and continuing bad habits while pregnant. I want children one day and I don't want to fall into that same category. I want to be a healthy happy mommy!0 -
Appearance is definitely a motivator for me. But, with that being said, I find that more and more I appreciate fitness and strength as part of an attractive appearance. I no longer think of thin as being synonymous with attractive.0

My clothes were getting tight; also I didn't like how I looked in photographs. Health issues- I have high cholesterol, my father just had open heart surgery, my mother has bad knees (and is overweight), my brother has MS and is type II diabetic, my mother just got diagnosed with diabetes. Getting older is not a choice, getting older while feeling good and healthy is.0
