Thank you everyone!!! :) Question: do you usually try to increase your mileage each month? And if so by how much? What would be considered a reasonable increase for someone who is still a little new to running?

Add a mile to a couple of your runs, and back off every 3rd week. The 10% rule gets dangerous as you increase mileage.

I just realized that I've been tracking my progress on my calendar at home, but not updating it here ! I'm a little behind what I wanted to be at (SNOW, AGHHHHH!) but not too bad, either!

What he said, but if you'd like a longer explanation read about it here:
    http://www.best-running-tips.com/increasing-mileage-safely.html

The most important thing to remember is to trust your body to tell you when you're doing to much and back off. Feeling tired or weak, more or longer lasting muscle soreness, and joint pain are strong indicators that you're pushing yourself too hard & need a rest.

Had an awesome half-marathon race in vegas over the weekend (w. perfect weather/crowds), but need to ramp up the mileage the next 2 weeks to compensate for under-running my long run & skipping a Saturday pace run.

11/1 - 6 miles (first time I tried some hashing)
    11/2 - 15 miles
    11/4 - 4 miles
    11/5 - 5 miles
    11/6 - 4 miles
    11/9 - 6.1 miles (olympic triathlon @ 8:30 pace)
    11/11 - 4 miles
    11/12 - 8 miles
    11/13 - 4 miles
    11/16 - 13.1 miles (race @ 8:09 pace) + 2 miles (ran back to the hotel)
    11/18 - 5 miles
    11/19 - 8 miles

    Total: 84 miles
    Goal: 160 miles

On the downside, despite getting about 2 minutes/mile faster with all of my training for my next Marathon (Disney), the Disney marathon pace group team rejected my Vegas time (submitted 2 months before the race but after their Nov 1 deadline for proof of pace) and no longer allows corral adjustments at packet pick-up. As a result, if I run the race, I'll be stuck in a 2.5 minute slower pace corral, so I may just defer to next year and do another January marathon.

Great race in Vegas! 8:09, that's fantastic! I'm always amazed when people go all out in a race then just take a leisurely jog back home.

Doing an 1:46 @ 8:09 pace in vegas was pretty nuts for me, as my last half (at a similar heart rate) was at a 10 min/mile pace back in July, and I usually do my training runs at an 11-13 minute/mile pace. Still, given that a 17 miler was on the plan for me, I kinda felt obligated to jog a bit after a few minutes of recovery at the finish line.

I guess the gurus are right that if you train slow, you can not only train more, but injure yourself less and consequently race fast.

Great job on your Vegas race - that is an awesome time!!

Does it really matter what corral you are in? Within the first mile you will be way beyond the slower people you start out with. Or are you using those around you to motivate you to run faster? I find I just run my own race regardless of whether I start in the 'correct' corral or not but I am running off my own pace and really trying not to run too fast at least initially. Granted the Disney races are packed so placement may be more important.

Fabnine asks how my Las Vegas race was: I was solidly in the middle, happy with my 12 minute pace, but obviously lagged far behind Ohhim.....and he was apparently a lot warmer than I was!
