    i think the best idea is always to get the facts, comprehend the information related to it, and then make an actually informed decision.

    And by comprehend, I mean - understand it well enough to confidently put it into practical, correct use.

    Ah, me too! My pawpaw had a syrup mill. Nothing like the yummy super sweet taffy left over from syrup making!! Thanks for that trip down memory lane. :)

    i don't know this family's story, but did they switch from a standard American diet to a mainly whole foods diet with lots of vegetables?

    I haven't cut out all sugar (I still eat a ton of fruit) but I have switched to a very high nutrient diet as a way to help treat my autoimmune disease. I would guess about 60% of my food ( by volume, maybe not calories) is fruits and vegetables and the difference in my health and energy is amazing. I don't really eat added fats and sugars anymore, not because I think they are necessarily bad, but because I'd rather "spend" my calories on something with plenty of micronutrients and some fibre to fill me up.

    It seems clear to me that humans have evolved to run on sugar. I wonder if the benefits they saw were due to the increase in fibre, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in their diet, rather than cutting out the body's preferred energy source.

    Here's an article about it by Eve Schaub. They didn't go sugar free, they went added sugar free, but as you know saying sugar free sells more books. http://www.everydayhealth.com/columns/my-health-story/year-of-no-sugar-one-family-grand-adventure/

    OT: My diet is complicated enough with staying under 2k of sodium per day and sticking to 1600 cals a day. Having to add all the synonyms for sugar to my brain so I can make certain it's not on any ingredient list of my food is too much. Taking away sugar would drive me insane enough to commit murder.

    The journal is rated OVERALL as an academic journal. What's not relayed here is that it just doesn't cover biology, but geology, palentology, etc. And those have LOTS of peer reviewed studies vs the "studies" like Lustig's.

    Refined sugar isn't evil. Just like white rice isn't evil. Over consumption is the overall issue which is why obesity reigns in the US. There are a few more countries that consume sugar in higher amounts than the US yet don't have the same obesity issues.

    Thank you for confirming that you didn't read the article. Just because Nature does publish peer-reviewed research does not mean this piece is a peer-reviewed study. It's from the "comment" section of the magazine ... not the "research" area.

    Critical thinking and comprehension are needed to discuss scientific literature.

    No, I don't plan on cutting out sugar ever. I like some sugar, but I have cut back over the years.

    A few years ago (2005/2006) I gradually weaned myself off sugar in terms of adding it to my iced tea/hot tea/and coffee. I also weaned myself off Soda (diet, I left regular soda years before that). I did it for my health, not specifically to help me lose weight. I can't say I lost a considerable amount of weight from doing it, but I did gain more energy and have less 'sugar crashes'.

    If you have a problem overeating sugary foods, then by all means, cut back on sugary foods! I have been substituting sugar for fake sugar and reducing the quantity of added sugar in coffee, but I don't have a problem eating a bit of chocolate which is satiating with good fats.

    OP, it doesn't look like you need to lose any weight from your photo?? Are you having low blood sugar problems (fainting, feeling woozy, etc.)?
