    Hi guys!

@niki--I enjoyed the article you posted. I often talk about food as fuel, but not in the same way as the people the article is criticizing. When I talk about food as fuel, I only mean it in the sense that you need a decent amount to keep the fire (your metabolism) burning. I did appreciate the article's reminder that we need more than just the energy sources in food, but the micro-nutrients as well.

@holly--glad your friend will do your hair color. That's awesome that you won those battles over soda and the fast food today--way to go!

@renae--great job sticking to your plan this week!

@tracy--congrats on winning the temp contest! Can't wait until we are above freezing again--looks like it won't be anytime soon. :(

@goins--that's great that your gym is so convenient.

AFM--Exciting news--some friends of mine were planning a girls weekend to Nashville, but the weekend they originally chose was bad for me. It was in April right after I would already be out of school for a work function, and right before the AP exam. However, it turns out flight and hotel prices were really jacked up that weekend, so now they've switched to the last weekend in May so I can go with them. Booked my flights tonight and I'm really excited.

Me too ... I've even used the car analogy. Made me laugh.

Saturday - Success (what have you accomplished, focus on the positive of the week, NSV (non scale victories).

Well, I have nothing this week for Saturday Success for accomplishments or NSVs so I will focus on a positive of the week ... I woke up every day with gratitude for the new day and ended every day with plans for the next day.

    Good Morning!
Trying to stick to a habit of checking in every morning at breakfast if I can.
My Saturday Success is that I have gone to bed earlier this week and snacked less at night. Feeling better already! Family success...my daughter stayed off her foot last night and it looks so much better today. :)

@teniselavine96 - Welcome! The best thing you can do is to track everything and be honest. Niky is right. You can make things better when you have an accurate picture of where things stand right now. The truth may be ugly, but facing it is the first step.

@skinnyjeanzbound - How nice that the girls weekend was changed and now you can go! It will be something to look forward to during these last bitter weeks of winter. :)

AFM- Today I am going to buy a gift for my niece. We have her 6th bday party tomorrow. Bowling, which is always a good time! After we get the gift, we're headed to get groceries....there is now officially no fresh fruit in this house, and a sad, single container of yogurt. The fridge and cupboards are getting bare! Also, the kids want to make cookies...I have this taralles recipe that I hadn't made in seven years or more. I made them for the fish fry yesterday, and the kids were sad that they didn't get any. They are fun to shape into knots, so the kids will have fun making them. I don't want to eat too many of them, so we'll cut the recipe down and maybe pack some into the gift for my niece.

@hansea Well, I didn't know what taralles were so I looked them up. Yup, I think I, like your kids, am disappointed I didn't get any. They look good and I may have to try my hand a that.

WOW! The sun is shining, the neighbor shoveled our zillion mile long driveway. Thank you Jeff! That all sort of brightens the day! Should I make him some taralles?

AFM: Got off track yesterday. Took DH to have some basal cell removed from his nose (Oh he looks lovely!) yesterday at 7 something; it was down hill...or up calorie from then. At least I read all evening and only had a glass of water with the book..

The cookies are oatmeal/craisin. The neighbor is just such a dear to do our driveway and what do you give a bachelor who has everything he needs/wants? Of course, DH rather encourages me to "pay" Jeff for this as he also gets cookies.
Once the cookies are cooled I am pretty good at staying out of them. Last time I had one bite, so no problem ...

@barb--yum! those cookies sound delicious! It wasn't as sunny here today, but temps were near 30, so it felt like a heat wave. Back down in sub-zero wind chills tomorrow.

@amanda--yes, I'm very excited that I have the trip on the horizon. I'm going to use it as motivation to get back on track with my nutrition. I'm sure it will be quite warm there at the end of May, so I will need to be swimsuit ready.

    Saturday Success:
Despite this not being a great week for me, I forced myself to think of some successes. One is that I made all of my fitness goals. In addition, I finally added some weights back in at the gym both days I was there this week. I did shoulder press and bicep curls with very light weights--so far it doesn't seem to have aggravated my shoulder injury.

I also did the elliptical after my 5k run to up my calorie burn. I should come in under my weekly allowance (unless I go hog-wild this afternoon/evening--which I have no intention of doing).

That being said, the scale is definitely creeping up to the top of my normal 5-lb range, and I don't like that one little bit. I know I can do much better next week.

Hey everyone! It’s been a really long day at work and I’m wiped out. We didn't have a lot of sales but we did have a lot of people. I think they are pre-shopping for when they get their income taxes. Hope they come back!! :)

@hansea, your post about your awesome parenting skills cracked me up!! I think you and I might be cut from the same cloth. ;) Hope your daughter’s foot feels better.

@skinny, yayyyy for a getting to go on your girl’s weekend. I would love to do that someday with my girlfriends. :)

OK, that’s all I have. I really need to go lay my head down and sleep.

Holly- Great job on leaving the soda and fast food behind. With the soda you had a nice walk even through it was cold.

Skinny- Great that you get to have a girls weekend.

Tenis- Welcome to the group. Getting started is the first step and always the hardest. Just start by logging your food. Eventually you will start making better choices and become more aware of what you are eating.

tlh- Good luck with the articles.

hansea- Sprained ankles are a major main in more ways than one. When I was in high school, I was attending a birthday party and hit my big toe on a lolly column. It hurt like crazy but I was able to deal with it. Then I went to a picnic but noticed that my foot was swelling and it still hurt. Well by the time I got home, it was time for a trip to the hospital- I broke my big toe. I hope it is only a sprained ankle for your daughter and yes RICE is the best way to deal with it. I am sure you are a great mother.

The success this week was swimming a 500 yd freestyle non-stop during swim practice. This was in addition to the all the other swimming that was done today. Yesterday, I had a some really good climbs especially for new routes.

Well, we had another snowstorm today but I was home before it got bad. Now, it has changed to freezing rain/sleet. I hope it turns to all rain soon. Tomorrow, it is suppose to be in the 40's for a day before it goes back to the 20's. It was a good day to stay inside and keep warm.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

Ahh what a week this has been... I was busy but not that busy, but I was just kinda blah. I have logged in every day but haven't really logged my food all that well. I went out to lunch or dinner way too much this week. Haven't made the best choices either. I'm on vacation this upcoming week so I'm hoping I actually get caught up on rest, get things done and get back on track. I didn't even work out this week besides my workouts with my softball girls I coach. I should have went to kickboxing this morning but I really just wanted to sleep in so I did.

Hope you all have had a great week. Sorry I didn't read through it all to do personals. I will be more active this week!

Again reading and being inspired, but no time for personals. The last few days have gone much better.
I posted a profile on Facebook like the one I posted here. I have had over 60 likes and many comments. My previous picture was almost 2 years old so it was a big surprise. It's been a lot of fun.
Another NSV, I got some mending done today for Cathy and Nicole that I have been procrastinating. It sure feels good to have it done!
Have a great Sunday. Stay warm. I hate that so much of the country is freezing.
    Onward and downward. Kaye

    @txmom--sorry you've been sick.

@kaye--I love your new profile pic--you look fabulous!

@erin--sometimes our bodies need sleep more than exercise.

@laurie--congrats on the swimming and climbing victories. Hope your weather improves. We are back in the deep-freeze pretty much all week. :(

@teresa--yeah, I was kind of on the fence about going. It's with one pretty good friend from work and the wife of a colleague and some of her friends. At 1st I was hemming and hawing--what if I don't get along with everyone? do I really want to spend money to travel with people I don't know well? And when they originally chose a weekend that wouldn't work, I was a little relieved that the decision was made for me. However, when the date changed I realized that I really did want to go, so I decided to put all of the negative what-ifs out of my head and just do it. I know 2 of the other 5 girls are super fun, so I'm sure it will be a blast.

AFM--Well according to my food log, I made my calorie goal for the week. However, I had so much I couldn't measure and a lot of guesses, so I'm not comfortable saying I made my weekly calorie goal. This week I have no meetings, so no situations where I can't control my food--it should be a much better week.

It's freezing here again, so my plan is to head out to grade and maybe catch a bit of the Blackhawks game this afternoon. I need to finish those Gatsby journals (only 12 left) as well as the pom and BNW analysis activities. I didn't even bring home the quizzes b.c I still have a bunch of kids who need to do make-ups. I also have 64 essays my AP kids wrote on Friday--haven't even added those to the list yet.

Just a quick update on my grading goals.

Finished the Gatsby journals, then as I started the poem analyses, it was clear the students needed more time to work on this. They did the analysis in class in groups, but it looks like many ran out of time and short-changed a few questions. I gave feedback to all 12 groups and will carve out some more time in class so they can finish the tasks.

Still want to finish the BNW analysis activities, but I'm running out of steam. Maybe I'll catch a second wind after a break.

Hi everyone. Just a quick check in from my phone, hard drive on my laptop crashed yesterday--it's pretty much consumed me all weekend. :frowning:

Winter has apparently arrived in Texas--getting a mixture of sleet/freezing rain for next 24 hours, most of the large school districts have already canceled school for tomorrow. Glad I'm off tomorrow!

Hope to have laptop up & running soon so I can catch up!

@kysheli45‌ - Welcome to the thread. The best way to start is to just start, log everything, all your food, beverages and activity. See what you are doing now so you can make a plan.
We have all started at some point. You will find lots of support here if you stop by often, ask questions and tell us about yourself.

    Hello All.
Sunday Share, I am Lori, member since June of last year. Down 106 pounds in about 3 years.

I am doing well today. I am under my calories, had a great workout at the gym. Came home and started the taxes. I truly believe if everyone had to write checks to the government we would have tax reform in no time. I am truly shocked by my numbers. As many hours as I worked last year I netted less than 50K. I will have to pay a total of about 12K in taxes for 2014. That does not include what my husband already paid from his paycheck. The price we all pay to have the society we have. I am still on a little rant about it. This time of year I really question whether being self employed is worth it.

Food has gone fairly well this weekend. I am happy about that. My sinus infection is gone. The last dregs of the cold are just about gone. So better health is on the way.

I have another appointment with the counselor tomorrow. I am looking forward to it. Hubby is still not in the loop but I plan to bring him in tomorrow. I am asking him to come with me. He is still off work from his shoulder injury so he will not have to take time off work. I am hoping all goes well.

There is an mfp friend (down 150 pounds) who goes to the same gym I do. She is checking into having some loose skin removed. I am a little intrigued. Even though I still have 40 ish pounds to go I am developing alarming bingo wings. I no longer want to wear short sleeves. I am thinking about starting to make my own workout shirts. The ones you buy all have sleeves about 3 inches too short and my "wings" show when I lift weights. I know I should not be conceited about this but yikes I never thought it would be this bad.

Cold and intermittent snow this week. I am very glad spring is only a month away. I am so looking forward to getting my bike out.

    Love to all,
    Lori <3

@lori--I know what you mean about the arms--I call mine "batwings." They aren't so bad if I'm not moving my arms, but I also notice it A LOT when I'm lifting weights or running on the treadmill (where I can see myself in the mirror). I do have a couple of workout shirts that are 3/4 sleeves--like baseball jerseys, but I got them from races, so I have no advice on where to purchase that style. I'm shocked at how much you have to pay in taxes! I was under the impression that one of the "perks" of owning your own business was the numerous write-offs. Clearly, I'm misinformed.

@kelley--ugh, that sucks about your laptop!! Hope you get it fixed and didn't lose anything vital. Be careful driving if you go anywhere tomorrow. We have no new snow or ice, but temps are supposed to be dangerously low again tonight and tomorrow morning. There's speculation that we might have another day off, but it would be our last emergency day, so I suspect our superintendent won't call it--especially since a lot of area schools stayed in session last Thursday when we were off. I'm sure he got an earful from parents about that.

    @kyshell--welcome!

    Sunday Share:
I'm karen--a HS English Lit teacher from Chicago. I joined MFP in March 2011 and this thread shortly thereafter in July 2011. I've lost about 60 lbs--most in the first year and a half. Since hitting Onederland, it's been really slow going with a lot of losing and gaining the same 5 pounds. I've been stuck in the 180s for about 2 years, but I'm determined not to give up.

Aside from losing weight and getting healthier, I've also become a runner and all-around gym rat. I have fun running 5ks and obstacle races in the warmer seasons, so I'm looking forward to spring for that reason.

Today was both relaxing and productive. I finished all of the grading I brought home for the weekend, so that feels good (even though I still have more at school). I also got 2 pretty good night's sleep--Friday night got close to 8 hours and last night about 10. Those here who know me will probably realize how unusual this is. I have terrible insomnia and usually get 5-6 hours per night. Even when I manage one good night on the weekend, it typically means that I can't fall asleep the next night. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't lie awake all night tonight...

Going to go watch Walking Dead now. Have a good night everyone.

Kelley- I hope the sleet and freezing rain leaves you soon and that you get your computer back. My school system is delayed tomorrow due the refreeze from today's melt. It hit the 40's today but tomorrow we are below freezing again and the rest of the week. Today, was spent shoveling yesterday's snow/sleet/freezing rain off the sidewalks and opening up the storm drains so the water would not pool in the streets.

Kysheli45- Welcome to the group. You will find support here if you ask questions and post often. That way we will get to know you. The best of advice is log everything you eat. Can you exercise? If so find something you want to do and start with that. Walking is a great way to start.

    Texasmom-Hope you feel better.

I am Laurie, 44 and this journey started 4 years ago. It has been a long battle with many ups and downs. No matter what happened, I am still here. My journey is not over yet and right now I can't seem to get out of the 190's, these 10 lbs keep coming and going. I still have about 30 to go to reach my final goal. What I have learned there were many things that I could not do 4 years ago, now today there are many things I can do and for those things I still have trouble with my response is I can't do yet. YET being the operative word because I can overcome my fears that are holding me back from accomplishing a new goal. So my new goal will be to complete the April 19th triathlon. Dive off the platform in the last swim meet (March 22) and run a 5K (May).

    Exercise Goals
Sunday- shoveling snow, walk and spin DONE
    MOnday- Trainer workout
    Tuesday- Gym???
Wednesday- Rest to many meetings might swim if possible
    Thursday-REST meet that runs late
    Friday- Climbing
    Saturday- Swim

Busy weekend. We went bowling today and I made ugali with bean soup (a recipe I got from my crs rice bowl app) for dinner....meh. It was not awful, but I think the whole family can say with confidence that we're happy to not eat it again. It was fun to explore, though.

Hello, you gorgeous people! Sorry I've been MIA the past few days. Despite what I thought was good planning, I ended up with a bunch of deadlines all at once. Just filed article 5 of 5 for this weekend (19 of 24 for the month), 3 of which required me to attend local events and report on them for the newspaper yesterday and today. I. am. beat!

I also failed with my eating this weekend. This was definitely my fault for not being prepared to be out of the house so much, then focused on writing. I broke my no-fast-food-for-Lent vow yesterday on my way home from back-to-back events. I was so hungry, I couldn't even picture what food I at home, let alone what to make. Not good. I've made a note on my calendar to be better prepared for my two on-duty weekends in March.

I'm also worried about my cat, Marlowe. He seemed to be under the weather on Friday but better yesterday. He ran outside while I was heading out to cover an event, and I didn't have time to chase him down and bring him back inside. Haven't seen him since then. :frowning: I've been calling him all day, but nothing. I need him to be OK.

Just popping in to do one last check before bed. It has been a high calorie weekend; not well thought out on my part. I have learned I FEEL better when I eat better. How old do I have to be to learn this??
Thankfully, tomorrow is Monday so things will settle into a normal routine for a few days again.
I am not going to complain though. The sun was shining today and though it was too cold to walk far we went over to see if Lake Michigan was still there. It is and it is beautiful.
    Have a good week everyone.
Thanks for being here. It really does help...even when I fail.

@melifornia - I hope you find your cat! One of mine ran out while I was packing my car for a weekend trip once. I didn't know it, and was gone all weekend. When I returned and couldn't find her, I was a wreck. I did end up finding her hiding in the wood pile next to the house, spooked. Maybe yours got scared and is hiding somewhere, too.

@mountmary84 - Thank goodness Lake Michigan is still there. Thanks for checking for us, because it's still too cold for me to go out for a short walk! ;)

@myturn29 - New week is here!

AFM- I am down 0.4 lbs this week. Could've been more if I hadn't had so much pizza this weekend.

    February:
    Calorie Goal- 11/22
    Exercise Goal- 8/12
    Lift Goal:
    Leg Press-185/200
    Squats-180/200
    Abs- 152.5/165
    Back- 152.5/165
    Triceps- 82.5/90
    Biceps- 82.5/90

  • Hey all!

This is my first post on here. I am starting a new plan today, with a goal of losing 150 lbs. I know it will be a long journey, as I didn't gain this weight overnight, but I'm willing to do the work.

Since I can't run just yet, I will be swimming 3x per week and walking the other days. I have an app on my phone that will lead me in exercises to supplement the cardio.

Sad thing is, I belong to two different gyms and haven't been going to either. I plan on using one of them to swim and the other, which is open late when I get off work, to do strength training before bed.

    @New People – Welcome
@Teresa- Hope the weather is getting better for you. I know the warmer states have a hard time with snow and ice mostly because it is abnormal.
@Hansea- Don’t beat yourself up to much about the parenting. You said it yourself she has a pattern of being a whiner about things like that. As parents we tend to act that way and then when something is really wrong we feel bad it’s just part of life with kids. I was the same way with my son even now he is always sick and wanting a doctor I wait like a week and then ask him if he still has pain or sick before scheduling an appointment because in the past it has been nothing. Teens definitely take to cool for hats, mittens and proper jackets to far once yours get to that age you will tend to see that LOL.
@Karen- That is awesome that you get to go to Nashville with your friends now. Congrats on meeting your weekly fitness goals
@mountmary- That was nice of your neighbor
@cblue- As far as taxes I am there with you. I haven’t received any type of refund since my son started working at 15/16. I have owed every year for the last 3 years.
@Melifornia- Best wishes with your cat returning.

AFM- Well I spent the weekend doing homework and hanging with my mom for her bday. Me and her played bingo at the casino which gets to be long because we never win. I am still working on my short story character comparison paper it is due at 6pm today. I can tell you all about both short stories inside and out but I don’t know how to relate the characters to modern life teens, so this paper has been extremely hard for me to write. Yesterday the high was -2, so I didn’t get in any exercise at all and it made me wish I didn’t live in the cold weather anymore.

@Holly…My opinion about weather is that we haven’t been recording it all that long when you look at the scheme of things, so while we talk about the major changes that have been happening, we are only really comparing it to what it’s been like for just over 100 years. We don’t actually know what “normal” is at a big picture. (see no debate, just my uneducated opinion – ha)
@Hansea – no, I had actually plans all day Friday between dr appointments and a game night at my sister’s (more on that to come). I was thrown for a loop on Saturday and didn’t go either because with no notice, I was watching my two nephews pretty much the whole day (again, more to come). Don’t feel bad about the “bad mom” you are right, we all have them. My oldest is a kid that cries wolf so I never quite know when it’s bad or just complaining.
@Karen…my winning didn’t last long. We’ve saw -15 on the way to church (without windchill) yesterday. However, we are suppose to be back in the mid-thirties today. The nice thing about the super cold days is that it makes these okay days feel better. Glad you’ll be able to make the girls weekend, it’s an opportunity to make new friends!
    @Laurie…great swimming!!
@Melifornia…I hope your cat comes home. We had a dog that ran away from my sister’s house while on vacation. He was a miniature Chihuahua and was gone for two weeks. We handed out flyers and we got him back.

Sunday Share: I’m Tracy. I’m 41 years old and live in Bismarck, ND with my husband of 19 years and my two kids – Jacob (13) and Emma (8). I have a desk job from my home and work in the life insurance industry. I bake cakes on the side. My life is filled with kids’ activities and church “stuff.” I had lost 33 pounds when I initially started MFP but have put back and lost the same 20 pounds now forever. Trying to get back in the swing of things.

Friday was an interesting night. My sister and her husband hosted a game night. We were having a lot of fun until my brother in law got super drunk (couldn’t read the words on the game card drunk). He started flirting with a woman there right in front of all of our eyes (including my sister). He has a history of being a vicious (verbal not physical) drunk and we all sat around trying to figure out what to do. When he got up to leave the room, other people took his seat just to provide separation. Luckily, the kids were downstairs and were not witness to any of this. Emma and I left and when I texted my other sister, she said she wasn’t leaving until he passed out because she wasn’t going to leave them alone. He apparently drank and started ranting and raving about what a terrible person my sister was and they finally called his Dad and had him come and get him. The next day, my sister had plans and didn’t want her boys around him so I watched them all day. The history part of this is that 1 ½ years ago, she left him but he somehow convinced her he had changed and would be good. We’ve all asked her now and apparently, she said he’s not done this in the entire time they’ve been together. I know she has to get to the point of wanting to leave, but man it’s hard to watch your loved one deal with this crap. My husband was appalled and said she and the boys could come live with us while getting on her feet. So far, no call that she’s leaving. If you are a praying person, would you please pray that he actually change or that she has the courage to leave him once and for all?

AFM: My plan is to go to Water Aerobics tonight. I’m going to drive separate from my sister and hope that I still have energy to go do some extra cardio after the class. If I don’t have the energy to do cardio, then maybe some weights – we haven’t been doing that much lately.

Here’s to a wonderful weekend. Grab your water bottles and drink that water!!!

I will pray for her in ways I prayed for myself. I never shared full the crap I went through with my ex but I had family and friends begging me to leave and I was constantly praying for signs that we were not meant to be. God was giving me those signs but I didn't want to believe them. Sometimes we are not ready no matter what our mouth says and sometimes we haven't learned what we need to from the situation. I can see now looking back on how pathetic I must have looked to other people looking in on my life.

Greetings from the frozen tundra (i.e. north central Texas )--frozen stuff fell from the sky overnight, roads are treacherous. May be like this thru tomorrow as it won't be warm enough to melt. Grrr...

I'm still working thru laptop issues, I replaced the hard drive but still running some diagnostics to test other performance issues. Not working on it today tho, need a break!

@melifornia‌~I hope kitty is close by & returns home soon.

@mnwalkingqueen‌~-2? And I'm complaining its 25 here!

Fate sometimes intervenes. I drove into a dunkin donuts the other night thinking I should have a bagel before I get home to cook dinner because I was so hungry. Fortunately they were sold out!! It was an eye opener. I cooked a healthy dinner and felt good when I put my head on the pillow.
Remember that old saying... "A moment on the lips - forever on the hips" ?!!

I'm so behind once again. 382 new posts. Sigh. I guess after being so busy at work the last thing I've been wanting to do is get on a computer for fun or not!! I've got to catch up though because I miss you guys. Even if I check in for 5 minutes, I need to do it daily!! All is well with us. It's been cold though in Atlanta. I think that's the one thing I'm missing about the Vegas life and that's the nice weather. Oh well. Cold and dreary is better with friends than sunny and warm with limited friends. LOL!!
