Assuming I stay healthy, I'd like to join the March challenge. I do more rowing than running but am beginning to run (again) after several months of not.
I do it on a treadmill though, so for some, it may not be "qualified" miles/time.
Thus far, I've run about 33 miles this month as compared to rowed about 144 miles. Both numbers will go up before Feb is done.0 -
Oops, sorry for the triple post forgot I saw this guy on my run today & had to share him.
@johnsonnelly I'm afraid I'm such a laid back runner I've never followed a training program. I originally set out each day with a goal of running farther than yesterday's distance or finishing the same distance faster. Now I mostly just run to run, when my heads in the right place I feel like I could run forever, that's the feeling I run for.
Now about barefoot running. I spend most of my life barefoot, so when I started running all of the sudden I had to wear shoes. Running barefoot on hot pavement or through snow is a bad idea, trust me. My feet hate shoes, but my New Balance Minimus shoes are actually my favorite pair. They fit my foot like they were made just for me, they're light as slippers but the Vibram sole with the little rubber circles on the bottom gives me great traction on almost any surface. They're sometimes a bit slippery on smooth wet rocks(not sidewalk or road), but what shoe isn't? I love them for the trails and road runs that are less than 10 miles. They don't have enough cushion for me to comfortably attempt longer road distances, but I've been told my feet will adjust eventually.

Every mile counts.
@fabnine - don't laugh that was me today in our record breaking snowfall here in the South LOL Love it!
Since I shared my sad snowfall last week, here's our real snowfall from yesterday into last night.

@QHjr - love the 'Hustle' dance video! Made me laugh!!
@cooter_mom - look at you go girl!! Awesome job!
@skippygirlsmom - gotta love your southern snow profile picture!! So glad you are back and you made your goal! I did not think it would be possible with your injury!!
@ddmom0811 - you've got this 5k!! go, go, go!!
@fabnine - love the snowman picture! I am pretty sure that is how most of the east coast feels!
@Stoshew71 - good luck with your 8k this weekend!
@johnsonnelly - Congrats on making your goal! To train for my HMs I just try to get in a good long run each week. But there are many training plans online at runnersworld.com and others that you can use to run specific amounts each week in prep. I do like this HM taper plan though: http://www.runnersworld.com/race-training/how-to-taper-for-your-first-half-marathon
Also I can't run truly barefoot because I use orthotics but I do wear zero drop minimalist shoes and they work very well for me. I like that they are very light but still provide some cushion.
@suncluster - you still have a couple of days left in the month. Don't give you you are so close!!
@kmewir76 - 4 hours to get home... that is brutal! Makes me appreciative for So California and working from home!
@Beaches1960 - congratulations on making your goal! Great work!
@Elise4270, @fabnine, @_nikkiwolf_ - I too love bright shoes. I had a pair of Asics that I am pretty sure glowed in the dark. They made me smile every time I wore them! My shoes right now are pretty boring but I am looking for a new pair - will hopefully find something bright and fun!0 -
Question: For those of you who lift weights as well as run, do you only do upper body, or do you also do squats, lunges, etc…? I am so sore! I'm finding it hard to add miles with strength training (I haven't marked anything here other than running…and skiing but I also do strength and a few other things). TIA!
2/1: Superbowl Sunday! no run
2/2: 6 miles on treadmill… struggled with this one but got it done
2/3: 3 miles treadmill
2/4: 3 miles… hopping between the ice on the road…and hills, ugh!
2/5: 3 miles treadmill
2/6: rest… full day of really resting…ahhhhh
2/7: 3 mile treadmill… really wish I had time to go longer….
2/8: 3 miles treadmill…. celebrated my twins birthday today 6y.o.! Fun but glad it is over!
2/9: 6 miles treadmill… much better than expected, love that!
2/10: 3 miles treadmill…snooze
2/11: 3 miles treadmill…
2/12: 3 miles treadmill … half way to goal now! yay! 2 days ahead of schedule!
2/13: 3 miles treadmill

Before I got hurt I was doing strong lift 5x5 3 days a week and running 5 or 6 days. I was just starting out so I wasn't lifting very heavy. I would do my long run on Saturday or Sunday and lift 2 - 3 days during the week. During the week I'd run about 6 miles in the morning and lift at night. Sounds like you do a lot of other "leg" strengthening things. I know some of the ladies here do both so I'm sure they will chime in. Right now I'm running and doing PT exercises to build my hips and legs and going upper body weight lifting.
@shanaber thanks. I never thought I'd see 40 miles in a month again. Considering I didn't run the first 5 days I'm really happy with my road back.
