@L2T~Yikes, I’m sorry for DHs job situation and retirement. Oh, the CEOs and CFOs are always protected in situations like that, it isn’t fair—they end up with some unbelievable severance that isn’t affected by the bankruptcy. It’s astounding since it’s their mismanagement that caused the financial situation to begin with. If he does lose his job I hope you are both able to recover quickly.

Actually, I hope you'll agree that it's ok for me to bookmark the blog so I can read some more when time permits. ... perhaps I'll start my own Miracle Morning and use your blogs as one of my morning readings!
@mnwalkingqueen ... so sorry that your 14-year old job did end. Thank goodness you are still young enough (it does get harder once you are in your late 50's) and have those college credits you've been working on ... they will both be helpful in finding a new place to work. Good luck.
@Skinnyjeanzbound ... I love that poem you posted. It fits right in with my photo ... and my philosophy of letting my anger go ... that's not always easy to do and sometimes takes years to accomplish. The deeper the pain, the harder it is, but I do it for myself so it is well worth it. Those that I forgive don't even know that I have done so, because forgiving does not mean condoning or reuniting ... it just means that I have let it go and it no longer has power to go on hurting me. Sometimes, we need to cut people out of our lives, never easy to do, especially if that person is a relative.

Hi guys, I'm new to this community but from what I can see in the most recent posts, it looks like the sort of place I'd like to be,
so my first Wednesday wish is to find the mental strength to complete my PhD without losing sight of my weight loss journey too. It's so hard to focus on both but I can't avoid potential future health risks because I have the excuse of being stressed in work so I will continue to find the time to cook healthy meals and get some exercise where I can

@sineanbroc - Welcome! A PhD? Impressive. What's your field of study? Have you begun your dissertation? When I lost the weight last time, and kept it off, I was in grad school earning my M.A. while also working full time. Structured meal plans and exercise schedules were tremendously helpful not just to meet my health goals but for life in general. I even wrote my thesis in less than 3 months! Then a few years later I got hit with mega stress and injuries and it all went in the crapper, but up until then, it was great.0 -

@robinsegg – the time change has messed me up too. I am struggling to get out of bed on time for work. Hoping it gets easier in the next couple days.
I have been struggling with recording my food. I know I am at or near my calories because I eat just about the same thing every day. However, I fear that not recording is going to turn into a slippery slope.

Hello All,
Doing well with food today. I am meeting a friend for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. I will do my best but you know those chips are deadly. I do not drink alcohol so no risk there.
I am still in a struggle about my marriage, I know things do not change overnight and I know if I stop long enough to catch my breath I will be able to hear what my heart is telling me.
@jennbo83 I want to encourage you to track everything anyway. No tracking is indeed a slippery slope.

Hey quick check in. I thank you so much for all the supportive words on my job. I wanted to answer everyone's questions at once in a comment. I received a private invite to a meeting the director and Senior group manager of my department at 7:45am the meeting was actually at 8:45am. I instantly knew what it meant and started looking at peers and friends calendar's for the same invite my department had a total of 30+ let go. I was told in the 8:45 meeting I had until 11:15am to pack up my desk and return to hear a debriefing of the benefits I have received at that point all badges and company credit cards had to be turned in. Upon returning to my desk to pack up I was greeted by what seemed to be million people in tears sad to have lost my talent and drive which included the director who had to let me go. From there it was networking sharing personal information to keep in touch it was the longest 2 hours of my life or so it seemed. After the debriefing my team which was 8 in which they lost 5 yesterday all meet for a good bye lunch and beer as did so many other teams. Today my ex group manager and some ex coworkers have checked in on me already to see how I am. I will say no matter what people's impression is of Target good or bad with this situation of thousands out of job or anything else. Please know that Target hired great people who inspired and helped each person other achieve goals and dreams I have nothing but positivity from the experience I had there in 14 yrs. On that note I need to get out of my house off to walk my pooch in 50+ plus weather before I burst into tears.

@KMHtime - welcome! Yes, it IS hard to get the eating habits under control. I'm also getting back into the habit - I find it very rough, and in the grocery store today I cast longing glances at my old favorites in the Bakery Dept. Had to walk fast past it!
@LivesToTravel - gosh -thats terrible news about DH's pension..if its any consolation, I'm stumbling along with with a ransacked retirement too. I've gotten used to it and its funny, it rains money sometimes - like when my '99 Buick needed tires, they were provided to me!0 -

AFM: I did much better setting an alarm and awaking this am, as I dithered around til 4:30am before going to bed. At least I made it into the bed. I did get a lot of filing done and my self-pride is rising.
So many have mentioned how stress de-rails you....
It almost killed me, and I once had a breakdown due to too much stress which built up because I gave 110% to one part of my life (work). I learned then and have to re-learn, from time to time, that I have to divide each DAY into work (of some sort), exercise, nutrition (and this includes food for your soul), and relaxation. A person can let one thing slide now and then, but not too often, or you'll wind up in bad shape.

No fast food today. I'm craving burgers... but I immediately had thoughts of my black bean burgers. They are so good! I deliver mail for a living so I also deliver flyers (adverts, junk mail, whatever you all call it LOL) and yesterday I delivered 1000 McDonalds coupon flyers, and today it was Wendy's. Sheesh, burgers everywhere! Oh, and my business section got pizza flyers on Monday. I am bombarded with fast food (no sneaking a left over flyer for the extra coupons to use myself any more though!)
The band on my fitbit force broke today, the glue became 'unglued' on each side of the display, so that's the end of it. Since there's a recall on it I can send it back and get a full refund. Nice little bonus, although it only lasted me 13 months. I don't think that's a very good life for the price of it. It should get at least a few more years before breaking down. Anyway, I now have to decide on a new device... I was drooling over the Apple watch, but it's quite pricey ($450) so I'm thinking of the new fitbit charge HR or Garmin vivosmart. I have some research to do, my wrist feels so naked already and I keep looking down at .. well, nothing.
Lastly, I'm itching to get back to running, but I can only run outside. No treadmill, and can't use the one at physio for more than 10 minutes. I'm wondering from those who do not run outside in the winter... when do you start to run outside again after winter is over? My concern is that the air will be too cold to breathe.0 -

I know I will get back on track with food and exercise, I just need to recommit to losing this weight. It is almost like I am avoiding losing the rest of this weight since I am comfortable with where I am size wise. I did swim today but then went to Chick a fil a for dinner. Ended up getting a small fry with my salad, ate the fries before my meeting and did not eat the salad. The salad will become lunch tomorrow. Dinner was late tonight and consisted of a PBJ on rye. Oh Well, I will learn and get it right eventually. My meeting lasted longer than I wanted, which is why I did not eat my salad tonight.

@Lives2Travel - I can't blame my retirement woes on anyone but myself - I didn't start saving for retirement until 2007 - and then promptly got hit with the same slump everyone else did. If I'm lucky, I might get to retire at 80! For those of you out there - don't do like I did - if you haven't started saving for retirement now, DO IT! "Head-in-the-sand" Syndrome is deadly - you don't want to be 65 and staring down into an empty well!
- @mnwalkingqueen - so sorry to hear of your job loss, but with luck and perserverance, I'm sure you'll recover. Don't let this be an excuse for sliding down the slippery slope!

@tracy (goings)--Great advice! When I first started teaching, I was hesitant to join into the 403b plan available through work. I figured I was already contributing to my teacher retirement, and I wasn't making much of a salary as a new teacher. However, my dad talked me into starting with just a $25 contribution out of every paycheck which I raised in small increments over the years, and now I have a pretty decent amount in that fund. good thing, too considering that our teacher pensions are at great risk right now in IL.
@laurie--I feel like I'm in a similar frame of mind. I feel comfortable at my current weight even though I know I could stand to lose another 20 lbs easily. I'm trying to motivate myself to lose it by thinking about how much faster I will be able to run if I'm even a little bit lighter on the scale. So far, that hasn't really worked, but like you said, we'll get it right eventually.
@tanya--I don't like to run when it's too cold outside, but once it's above about 40 F degrees it doesn't really hinder my breathing. I can't stand it when my nose runs faster than my feet! It's been in the 40s and 50s here lately and the only thing keeping me from running outside is the wet sidewalks from the snow melting.
@kelley--sorry about your laptop. Keeping my fingers crossed that you get that call back and move 2015 to a better trajectory!
@robin--I'm also finally recovering from DST. My ideal scenario would be to teach the Advanced Grammar class, but it's not even running next year which makes me sad. It was a really fun class to teach and not much grading at all. Another section of juniors would be easiest in terms of preps b/c I already teach it, but it would stink come research paper time. The senior honors level would also be okay as far as prep b/c I taught that for years and there's quite a bit of crossover with the lit from my AP class. However, it would also entail a lot of grading. The senior electives would be less grading, but prepping would take work. The only one I've ever taught is Contemporary Lit, and the curriculum has changed quite a bit since I last taught it.
@holly--it's nice that your former co-workers checked on you today. It's really sad to leave a job you enjoy, but I know you will find something even better for you.
@niki--I hope you got that tire fixed.
@tracy (tlh)--my family is the same way--we don't hide our feelings at all. Sometimes that is detrimental when I forget to turn on my "filter" with others who aren't used to straightforwardness. LOL

@L2T--hoping you DH still has a job, but that's a terrible blow with the pension regardless. We are in the midst of court battles here in IL over our teacher pensions. It's so frustrating when you you pay in and then have it taken away. In our case it's legislators who have mismanaged our money, and of course their pensions are safe and sound.
@KMH--oh, you sound like me! I'm constantly trying to outrun my fork--I never win that race.

@Fattychique You don't have to devote large chunks of time to exercise. Break it down into 10 or 15 minutes segments. Do a set of squats while your brushing your teeth, park as far as you can safely from wherever your going. The hardest part is just getting started.0

This looks like a great place to be. I've never been a part of something like this! Seems like ther is lots of support. I was reading over the different discussions I could be a part of and when I saw this one, I was so excited. Every six months or so I say I am going to start a "healthy lifestyle". It never lasts long. What happens is I have a bad day, binge, then feel guilty, and going into my emotional eating spiral. So tough and so frustrating that this is the one area I can't get a handle on! This time, I want it to be different. Praying for success.0

Thanks to all for your kind words about DH's job and pension. Don't know any more today than we did yesterday. The company wide conference call was postponed until today. DH suspects that they will declare Chapter 11 (reorganizing bankruptcy) and perhaps a sale to a competitor or equity firm. Right now he's less concerned about having a job as the impact this will have on it. As a commissioned salesman, he relies on his reputation and relationships with his customers and suppliers. He's particularly worried about one supplier who is owed in excess of 2 million by his company. If they don't pay that bill, he can forget ever being able to sell equipment from that supplier again to any customer and that will have a huge effect on his income. It sucks when the actions or ineptitude of others effect you despite your hard work. As @skinnyjeanz said the pensions and pay of the culprits always seem to be intact while the rest of us take the hit.
On a better note, after a small loss of .6 last week, I was rewarded with a 2.6 loss this week. So glad to be moving in the right direction again. My first goal is to get back to my lowest 2014 weight. Hope to do that by mid June when we go to Napa.

Thursday Truth: The fast food has become a staple in my household again. Yesterday, I didn’t have a chance to eat supper until 9:15. At that point, I had no desire to go home and make something so I drove through Arby’s. The up-side is that I make it fit into my calories but I’m not worrying about my macros yet. For now, I feel if I can meet my calorie, water and work out goal, I’m okay. I’ll deal with macros later (although I do have to work on my protein).
@Kelley…I hate waiting for a job interview result. I once interviewed for a management position within my team and it took a month. Didn’t get it, but that led to my current role, which allowed me to stay with my company from 6 hours away.
@Jenn…I agree with others here…keep logging. That’s when I slip up. It’s easy to miss a day and then say “eh, what’s one more day…” etc.
@Lori…I don’t like Mexican food but if my friends want to eat at a Mexican restaurant, it’s chips and margaritas for me. Hee!
@Holly…great attitude. I know you’ll have tough days while trying to get back to your feet, but it looks like you actually have a wonderful group of people to lean on (old co-workers and us).
@Robin…My issues were never directly about stress. I would just burn the candle at both ends and my body would say “whoa, you need to rest more.” I had a big brother that watched out for my “go go go” fall outs. Once in college, I called him and he could tell that I had reached a breaking point. He calmly told me to put a note on my dorm room door and go to sleep. I woke up 27 hours later. I’ve only had two episodes my whole life of the crashing, but my husband has gotten pretty good about seeing the symptoms and reminding me to get more sleep before it goes too far.
@L2T…glad you are back in your groove.
@Fattychique…It has already been said, but you can get in 15 minutes here and there. But the main thing is that it’s more important that you maintain lower calories. Several women here lost significant amounts of weight by just watching what they eat. They say weight loss is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. Maybe start with just focusing on your food intake.
@tryinliz…Do you do what I did (and sometimes still do)? When you start your “healthy lifestyle” over and over, is it all or nothing? One of things I’ve heard is to introduce that new healthy lifestyle over a period of time…start with lowering your calories. After you get that in check, add some exercise. What some of the most successful people on this thread have said is if it’s so extreme you can’t/won’t do it for the rest of your life, you might just be setting yourself up for failure. If I said I would never have a pop again, I’d just be lying. Love it --- for now I just make sure to work it into my calorie limits. Maybe later, I’ll minimize/eliminate it.
AFM…Made water aerobics yesterday (I can only do the Wednesday session during Lent due to my choir practice schedule). We learned some new deep water moves with the pool noodle and my thighs hurt just a bit today. Then we had choir practice from 7:45 – 9:15 last night. Only two weeks to the cantata now so we’ve had to kick it into high gear. Like I said above, my choices haven’t been great lately, but they have been (for the most part) fitting into my calorie goal. I know that I need to get better about meal planning and utilizing my crock pot and/or my timer on my oven. That way everybody could eat on their schedules on those days that a sit down supper with all of us isn’t possible.

Howdy my MFPeeps!
Working hard to have a good attitude. Was awakened by my son a 3:15 to come pick him up at the Sheriff's Office. He was arrested again. . . driving home from work doing 20 over in a construction zone while smoking pot and driving after revocation! Say that 3 times fast.
Not sure where to go from here except a trip to the counselor so I do not have a breakdown over this. One minute at a time today.
Land mine while I was dropping off my car this morning. A candy dish on the counter. ate at least 12 tootsie rolls. My sis was to pick me up and she went to the wrong location and I had to wait an extra 20 minutes and they were there and tasty so I indulged.
Mexican last night was really good. I did well on the chip basket and only ate 5 chips and 1/2 my shrimp fajitas without tortillas. I did drink 2 O'Douls. But came in really good on calories yesterday. Friend and I had a great talk and I was feeling really good until the call this morning.

@L2T~Hooray for the scale victory this week! I’m in the same boat, trying to lose 40# by my cruise in August—seems doable if I would just get my act together!
@Tracy~It’s nerve-wracking for sure, I wouldn't even be looking (and haven’t been real aggressive in my search) but I've gone as far as I can at my current company. They fell thru with some promises also, so it’s time to see what else it out there for me. I try really hard not to eat fast food—if I do I try to stick to Chick-fil-A or Subway (although I don’t consider Subway fast food).
@Fattychique~Like others have suggested, just getting in 10-15 minutes of exercise here and there. Remember too, you don’t need to exercise to lose weight. Just set up your profile with a sedentary lifestyle, it will result in a lower caloric base—many here have lost their weight with little to no exercise. So it can be done.

We’ve been talking a little bit about retirement lately and I ran across this article on Business Insider this morning, about how much money you should have set aside for retirement at your current age/income. I've been paying into a 401k since I was 27, increasing my percentage every other raise. A 401k also shouldn't be your only source for retirement. I have other investments as well. AFM~Waited until I got back from ortho doc before posting today—he injected the bursa with cortisone and put me in a boot for 4-6 weeks to protect my Achilles (less chance of rupture). I don’t need to sleep in it and I can take it off to swim, elliptical or bike but no walking—basically said time to face reality and stop running (a hard pill to swallow). I hope that I can return to walking once this heals—if it doesn't heal I’ll need surgery , so fingers crossed this works. On another note, my Thursday truth is that I need to find my mojo again—the year so far hasn't been the greatest with some emotional ups/downs. I hope now I’m able to find my motivation again.0 -
@cblue315 (Lori)~Yikes, DS is really pushing your limits isn't he? No wonder you ate those tootsie rolls! I may have left him at the sheriff's office so he can figure his way home--I'm surprised they didn't put him in jail, they may still if he hasn't been arraigned yet from his DUI a few weeks back. I'm sorry for your continued stress, I think a weekend for "you" sounds like a fabulous idea! Hang in there.0

Lori...I don't have old enough kids to be going through what you are and I'm sorry for him and for you. He might just have to be one that learns the hard way. I told my son that if I ever get a call from the cops overnight, I'll be leaving him there until at least morning. At this stage, I'm saying it to put the fear of God (or maybe the fear of me) in him. Again, haven't gone through it so it might be easier said than done. Good luck...thinking about you with all the trials you are facing right now.0

@Tanya -when I saw the new Apple watch the first thought across my mind was whether that strap was sturdy enough! Gosh how frustrating for you - the old wristwatch strap method seems much more sensible but would snag on clothes more, wouldn't it? Hope you get a replacement soon (poor lonely wrist!)
@L2T - glad you're feeling like you're back "in the groove!"
@Kah - Kelley - I'm sure you'll get a call back. I'm not so sure I believe the time frame, managements hiring time frame of "a couple of weeks" is so sensitive to a dollar here an a dollar there, its almost ridiculous, but when it comes down to the actual hiring they are willing to spend plenty to get the one they want - so ask for alot - all the perks you can get, up front!
I'm also very glad to hear about the Ortho doc booting your heal. My ex had both talus (heel) bones broken in a car accident and his healing time was so long. But he was terribly overweight and undermotivated. Not like you, little engine that could! You just get in that swimming pool as often as you can! I know you can avoid surgery. A good boot is a womans' best friend!
Do you get the PARADE Magazine down there? A columnist posed a salary question incorrectly, and now, online has corrected it to this:
“Say you have a job offer with a choice of salaries. One is $30,000 annually with a $1,000 raise every year. The other is $15,000 semi-annually with a $300 raise every six months. Which one is better in the long run?” This was a challenge to me at first but I'm sure you'll get it right!
How do others here answer this one?
@Newcomers - I say welcome too! You've already been told by others just keep coming back and reading and posting and you will start to feel accepted and comfortable. We are all here for the long run. Personally I have had scraped knees a lot from falling off the wagon. Heck, even a scraped chin, I've fallen so bad! But these friends just pick me back up, with friendship and hugs and its so helpful to turn to this place in stead of the refrigerator when you get the urge to nosh!
@CBlue - Lori - I agree with @tih - Tracy that your son needs to find his own way home (by foot power, since his license is suspended) -(although I understand as a mom, you were afraid of where he'd end up walking - that itself was a choice you didn't want him to make) but, a date must be set in your mind, and agreed to with your husband, when you are going to cut the strings (from your heart) and let him sink to the bottom, where his destiny lies. Let him do the hard work of building himself up again.
Lori, it is a shame, that while you've been improving yourself, your loved ones have not improved their own circumstances. My heart goes out to you. When I think about the people related to you and surrounding you, you really don't have much support.
Go for that weekend and take care of yourself!

I drink pop too - the diet kind, and the decaf at night if I want something sweet - and I HAVE to have a CHERRY cola, not a plain cola, to the point where if I have to buy plain decaf cola, I will add squirts of Cherry fruit-flavored drink syrup (like to make Cool-Aid with) to make my Cherry Coke. I've never tried to cut back on it! I still get my real water in, so I figure the 3 or 4 diet pop a week won't hurt me. Now, the 15 packets of sweetener I use per day in my coffee might have some effect, however.0 -
@LaurieK and @Skinniejeans - Karen - its very interesting to note what you're both saying tonight.
From my vantage point, you're both vigorous, athletic people, both in the same profession which forces you into long hours of sedentary work with only small bursts of energy, all the while enduring huge amounts of stress on an increasing scale each year.And your pitted against each other for "job security".
Despite the impediments of your jobs, both of you, in the past 4 years,have out-learned and out-performed me in applying the real-life facts of nutrition, exercise and weight-loss to your personal situations. You both have lost substantial amounts of weight, and increased the amount of activity you participate in. And you've kept the weight off through trying circumstances. You both have had serious problems in your personal lives.
Karen, you have continued to set goals of faster track times in your running and you keep meeting and surpassing them!
Laurie - you keep exploring new interests in sports and now have so many interests you may have to take up space exploration to satisfy your ongoing need for new challenges!
Plain and simple: I look up to both of you. You're both examples of people who "got it right". And did it with grace as well. Neither of you has ever said an unkind word here. You offer good advice to every newcomer that comes along. You both exemplify what it means to give support and have support when losing weight.
So, to hear both of you admit you feel you are only 20 lbs away from your ideal weight, but have been content with your body this past year, makes me wonder, and want to ask you both to really question yourselves, about the need to lose that 20 lbs. Do you really need to?
If you were challenged by someone you consider really awesome, say Gorilla or someone who's gone as far as he can, say they challenged you to lose 10 lbs, and drop it fast, in 10 weeks or so, would you find the motivation?
Or is putting on muscle more important? Is eating proper protein to nourish your development more what you're about right now?
Just some thoughts and questions as I try to still the rumbling in my belly!
AFM -2 Meals of Cottage cheese so far today. Yummy. Also, my 95 y/o step-mom is in the hospital, very sick. I think she wants her wings to go to heaven....so thats what I'm currently talking to the Universe about. I'd be happy if she recovers tho - just being selfish.....
Also imsurance forced to drop my old rheumatology doctor and it actually turned out well. I LOVE my new R,doc, whom I met today - a very nice middle-aged woman, who actually spent 40 minutes getting to know me, and didn't think I was crazy !
She thinks I may have, on top of the rest of my little list of problems, "fibromyalgia" and told me to get back into the pool and do it every single day unless I have the best excuse in the world - meaning NONE!. She's also going to wean me off the prednisone which is good news! I see her again in a month, then she will confirm the fibro diagnosis or not.0 -

On the surface, it looks like the $1,000 annual raise is a better deal than the $300 raise every 6 months ... but in actuallity, I think you accummulate more income by going the 6-month route. Here's my thinking on it ...

Just a quick check in tonight.
I managed to swim yesterday and then today completed a brick of biking and running. It was a hard workout but good. Now that is out of the way for this week and I can enjoy the weekend.
For the runners out there or those who like to walk a 5K- I saw tonight that the Travis Manion Foundation is starting to put together their 9/11 hero's run for 2015. They have several new cities including Chicago. This run usually occurs around 9/11. I did this run last year in Annapolis and it was fun, atmosphere. Would anyone be interested in meeting up for this event? I will post a link later and more details as they become available.
