June 2015 Running Challenge

Wow that was a lot of reading! It is SO hot here in NC, and we had a heat wave this week. I did 6 miles yesterday and it was so hot. I have noticed that it definitely slows me down a bit. In general, I don't like to run after 8 or 9 AM.
6/2 = 4.2 mi
6/4 = 4.12 mi
6/6 = 13.1 mi (Race 13.1 Half - 2:16:51 finish time)
6/9 = 2.23 mi
6/10 = 5.01 mi
6/12 = 3.01 mi
6/14 = 6.01 mi
Total = 37.68
Not quite on track to finish the month out... I've been running with a friend again, and she is struggling. It has slowed me down a lot and some days I have ended up doing much shorter runs than I wanted to because she had to stop. Yesterday I ran a little ways with her but was able to keep going without her... felt kind of bad, but what can ya do? Hopefully I can get caught up this week!

A virtual race is a race that you can run anywhere and, usually, any time. For example, I paid my fee (which, in this case went to a fellow runner) and pledged to run a 5k sometime between April and the end of July. I generally do them if I can't find a local race I want to run as it gives me incentive to make those miles happen or if I really love the medal.
That is pretty cool, I never heard of that. Love the socks!
So I went out and looked at some of these, very cool. I love that the money goes to charity (at least for the ones I looked at). But I did notice some say they give 10% of the profits to charity and others give 85% and more so I guess you need to watch who you are using. Very neat.
I saw one on Facebook that I believe is still in the planning stages. It is being planned for a runner's son who was a police officer and killed by someone texting while driving - I will post the info if I ca find it.0 -
Still a little off, but I needed to get back into running after a week off. put in a 5k for 34km this month. Need to start upping the length of my runs I think. Have a three day weekend this weekend so I'm hoping to get in 2 10+k runs.0
-
Been a busy busy weekend so I am getting caught up on all the posts here, again...
@Aresende90 - How did it go running with the jogging stroller? I can't imagine how all the moms manage to run with one or even two kids plus the weight of the stroller. I look at them with such admiration!
@kimlight2 - Congratulations on your first 5K! Yep racing can be so much fun and very addictive!
@caratayloruk - Great job getting that run in with terrible weather and a great pace too! Soon that hill will seem like nothing, well maybe not but it will be easier
@7lenny7 - have you tried rolling out the ball of your foot on a baseball or one of those rollers made for your feet? They work great at working out the little bits of tightness I have there. I don't let Hobbes run offleash but I use a waist leash so he has some room to move. He also stays right next to me but would love to go visit with EVERYONE people and dogs if I would just let him. The Forestry rangers will also ticket us if they catch you with your dog offleash because the trail goes through a protected bird sanctuary(even though it is a cement channeled river and there are coyotes that roam there. He knows he is supposed to sit when I stop and sometimes it happens and others he needs a reminder.
@autumnblade75 - congratulations on the PR! That is an awesome time!!
@mwyvr - YAH New Shoes!! Which shoes did you get? Where's the picture? I had to send one pair of mine back to exchange for a different size and I am anxiously awaiting their arrival! I don't wear my minimalist ones without socks. Just thin ones to wick the sweat away!
@JoRocka - Great job getting your run in and done even when the body said no way! Love the pictures!
@SBRRepeat - Nice job on your trail race!
@WhatMeRunning - I am going to get me a Fanatics shirt for the reason you mentioned- it would be a great conversation starter at the races. I always enjoy meeting and talking to the other runners!
@missmelis98 - Even if the time was not great you completed it and I hope you had a great (muddy) time!!
@skippygirlsmom - Love the picture of Macy in the pool! Maybe Hobbes needs to get together with her so she can teach him how fun it is to swim
@juliet3455 - congratulations on your race and a great time!
@MrsKGrady - congratulations on both your 5Ks and getting a PR too! Love your pictures and the 'Bad *kitten*' socks!
@RunTimer - I love Lake Merritt but never ran there. How far is the loop around the lake?

I'm started a dedicated thread for this, but am going to repost it here in case some of you miss it and might be interested.
Disclaimer: I have downloaded and installed this program but I have NOT used it and cannot offer any opinion of it, but I have seen it referred to here so perhaps some of you will be interested in this. I received the following email today from Runtastic:Attention Android Users: To get Runtastic PRO, first download the free Runtastic app. Next, go to Settings (in the app), then click on Runtastic and enter the following code into the Enter Promotion Code field:
FREE-NOW
For iOS & WP Users: Simply download the free app in your preferred app store now! Enjoy.
I did this and it worked for me. I do not know yet what the difference is between the free version and the pro version.
I used runtastic. It was great until I got my first garmin watch (the FR-10), then I stopped using it. LOL
The difference I remember is that the free runtastic would give you feedback as you were running only for the first 2 miles. Then it stopped giving you feeback. You had to download the pro version if you wanted continued feedback back the 2 mile mark. I don't remember what else the pro version provided, but that was enough for me to pay the 3 bucks to upgrade. LOL0 -
02/06 - 8.5km
16/06 - 6.01km
This has not be a good month! Sick kids, horrendous weather and now I'm coming down with something......I should be able to make it to goal though!

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better!
My wife has one of those balls for PF, but based on the location of my pain, I don't know if it would help. It wouldn't cost me anything to try, though, so I'll have to try it next time and see what happens.
I don't think I could use a waist leash with Kody. When he has to stop to poop, he has to do it NOW. I imagine a waist leash would mean we'd end tugging each other pretty hard when he had to stop.
When we pass other runners, bikers, or dog walkers, he tends get even closer to me so that he starts pushing me off the path if I'm not paying attention. On our run Saturday we went by two police officers, one of which was in a parking lot watching us run. He either didn't notice or didn't care that Kody was off leash.
Kody is a well-trained hunting dog and obedience is key. While I know others we meet don't know how he'll react (hence usually having a short, light leash tucked in his collar if needed), I just don't worry about him. He doesn't go out the door unless I tell him it's ok. He doesn't go IN the door unless I tell him OK (so I can clean his muddy paws before going in!), he won't go after dropped food unless I say it's ok. He won't jump up on you unless you give him them special signal (arm out front like you're offering to escort him). Coming out of the water, I can stop him from shaking off until after he delivers whatever it is he retrieved so I don't get wet. I can send him after his retrieving toy then, while he's on a dead run, stop and recall him back to my side.
I've even trained him to get beer for me. Seriously. One of these days I need to video tape that.

@shaneabner I picked up two... Merrell Bare Access 4 (street) and Bare Access Trails. These are a total departure for me and a bit of a leap of faith but had some confidence that my form was refined enough to try it. So glad I did. I simply cannot believe the difference between running in these and my normal street shoes - I ran the last 3km of my run in my old shoes just so I'd get to fully appreciate how different they were. Bizarre in a really cool way.
Sadly off sick with an annoying cold today so the BA Trails had to deal with very long break-in walk instead. As you can see the trail shoes are Kady-Approved(tm)!

...interestingly, it worked yesterday, and the runtastic icon showed "pro". Today "pro" is gone, and when I sign in on PC is says "14 day trial of premium." Tried to re-enter the code, got "successful, restart app to activate", but restarting app and reboot of phone does nothing. I did download the 2 free-for everyone story runs to try today. If it doesn't work...perhaps back to mapmyrun.....

I have a LAX ball- you can get at D*Cks Sporting goods for like 2$. I use them on my feet CONSTANTLY. They are harder than a tennis ball so you can really put some muscle into them if you need it.0 -

@jtarmom glad the ITBS is feeling better
@7lenny7 Kody is awesome. I was watching a guy in a field one day with his hunting dog. He kept the dog in its kennel and walked out and put a "duck" in the field of tall grass out about 75 yards. He got the dog out and sent him out, then he would whistle (the kind you can't hear) that dog would stop short and turn and look at him and he would do an hand signal and that dog would go. He'd point left and it would take off, point up and he would go further out, down and he'd come back etc. One time he whistled and yelled some code word and the dog ran out and came back with a decoy duck. It was amazing to see. Afterwards he gave him another command and the dog jumped up in the back of the truck, got in his kennel and laid down. He said if only his kids would listen half as good. My Sandy was great like that, she was easy to train and was awesome. I could leave a steak on the coffee table in the morning and come back at night and that dog wouldn't touch it. Macy is good, she won't touch anything that hits the floor unless you say okay, she won't go out the doors until I tell her it's okay, she never goes out before me, she always waits for me to go first. She'll go to her bed if you tell her. Nothing is better than a well trained doggie. Makes life easier for everyone. Her downfall, she's poodle crazy.
@shanaber let me know about that virtual race I'll definitely do that.
