I've been seriously lifting since the beginning of September and am blown away by my progress so far and how much my body has changed. I wish I would have known about lifting heavy sooner, I will never be one of those girls again that kill themselves trying to do hours of cardio!!
I started my weight loss/fitness journey 2 years ago, I weighed 235 lbs and wore a size 18 pants and xxl shirt. Now I weigh 139 lbs, and wear a size 2-4 pants and xs-s in shirts. I've got 9 more lbs to lose till I reach my goal weight.

I lost 30lbs last year at approximately 2lbs per week by eating at a deficit and going for lonnng walks 2-3 times a week. I've had a break for a while, gained just a few of those lbs back, and started calorie counting again in recent weeks. I barely dropped one clothing size last year after that 30lb loss.
This time around I've been doing kettlebell and dumb bell exercises in the house along with basic stomach exercises (courtesy of YouTube) and started at the gym this week where I'm working on my legs as I don't have that equipment at home.
In this month alone my weight has stayed the same/increased slightly but I've dropped a trouser size and all my tops are baggy already! Lifting seems to be better for me than just cardio.0 -
You ladies are absolutely incredible! I'm just a beginner, started lifting at home recently and love it! I hope things go as well for me as it has for all you superheroes!0

I love coming to this thread. It's so motivating! All you ladies are so awesome.
Here's my experience with lifting and weight loss. And for the more "mature" ladies...yes, we can have muscles too!

I too have been looking to begin weight lifting. Long story short, my husband has been wanting to lose weight/get healthy for a while and tracking food (for him) just isn't appealing at this time. We've tried going for long walks and I tried getting him into running a little and Jillian Michaels videos but he just won't stick with it. We recently both bought rec center gym memberships and finishing up our first week at the gym doing weights. I may have finally found a workout more his speed because he's actually excited to hit the gym. I, on the other hand, am excited but realizing just how stressed I get when I feel like I'm not sweating it out like I'm used to with cardio workouts. I'm determined to make physical changes though so I am going to stick out this weight lifting and hope to achieve great things. I might need to check up on these boards more often for motivation.1

You ladies are amazing and very inspirational, the tone and definition in your bodies is something I can't wait to achieve, my own weight loss/fitness journey started in February. I wanted to go to the gym for ages but due to childcare and work I just couldn't get there. I finally took the leap when my daughter started back at school and I knew I was on the edge of bursting, I was huge I started at 16 stone there abouts and have worked my way down to 13st12 about 180lbs, I still have a way to go but at 5'8 I think another stone ish should be a good weight. I workout 5 out of 7 days more if I can, zumba, body conditioning, body attack, 90 minute challenge and body combat and I incorporate weights on most days during and after sessions. I was told before I did it not to try the weights as I might make myself look manly, but now I KNOW different, these are my pics so far I hope I can keep up with you amazing lot one day !!

I am 57 years old. I have no idea how much I weigh now. I last weighed around 142 and my goal weight is 125. I got down to 135lbs and was a size 10. Then March 1, 2015 I started doing strong lift 5x5. I then lost 17 inches and am now a size 5-7 depending on fit. I also went from doing 21 to 24 hours of cardio every week to ZERO I only do strong lift 5x5 for an hour every other day. I also changed from eating 1260 calories to 1600 +. I started lifting with a 12.5 lb bar and now lift 109 lbs squat, 100lb sumo squat, bench 83lbs, barbell row 89lbs, over head press 62lbs, and deadlift 137lbs.

Check out this strength training plan (three phases, 12 weeks long) to use as a base until you get yourself more familiar with lifting. There are videos to show you how to do the exercises as well.
