I'm new to cycling. Love it. Any suggestions as to a beginner goal?
if you are riding to exercise as opposed to leisure, get a heart rate strap and a GPS bike computer to track your body and effort. Then... start building.. start slow...get heart rate up and keep it there for a reasonable time, then cool down.
Everyone could suggest a length or time goal, but it really is up to your body. If you are comfortable push harder, if you are spent, cool down and call it a day. I found that if I ride alone, its a different type of ride. If I ride with friends and i'm the caboose, well then I push to catch up and keep up and before long you are keeping up and having a great chat with the person next to you...
Heart rate and fitness level determine how hard you push.. Learn your max heart rate and work towards reaching that level of effort for a short interval. Slow and Steady is the build up.....
Truly hope this helps..

Thanks for the helpful tips. I have a HRM and use it when I ride mostly to see the calories burned, but will definitely try being mindful of the heart rate and start building on that.0

Back on my fast road bike in the flat south, and it is amazing how much quicker of a speed I can average when riding. Still, did a slower ride today with a neighbor, but blew away a few tri-bike riding folks up a bridge/causeway today without breaking a sweat with all of my Pittsburgh developed leg muscle.

7/07 - 31 miles @16.5mph -- About half way into ride I rain into a WALL of rain. Could only see where I was going by following the white line on the side of the road (and thus almost rode into a downed tree!). Luckly rain slowed down after 10 min.

Can't believe I have done my 130 miles in July. Trouble is, my hand has an injury from leaning too hard and not wearing gloves, going to rest for a few days and move in other ways, missing my bike though!0
