Penny - Here's a photo I just took of the view out of my bedroom window. The nearer tree is a birch and the far one an oak. The neighbours recently took down a lime to let in more light, but thankfully spared the oak, which they trimmed a little. The birch tree is a fantastic perch and playground for little birds, so we are kept amused while we have our morning cup of tea.
Guinea fowl tonight. DH is going off to get some veggies - I thought we might have parsnips for one of them as we haven't had them since Christmas Day. We eat the breast hot one day and make something with the legs etc the next, like a curry. DH likes a sandwich.
I have to admit I'm not looking forward to contacting the phone company. Kim - I can't even get into the website at the moment and I don't think they have a chat facility. There is nowhere to email anyone. Total #×÷+ , in my opinion. :sad: I can feel myself putting it off. :ohwell: No one actually makes haggis. I only buy MacSweens, (sp?) , which is by far the best. Our local supermarket and the butcher stock it. My brother can't come, so it's just four of us.
With all the decluttering everyone is doing, I am reminded that one reason I love holidays so much is that you have so little "stuff" with you and only your nicest clothes. Very freeing. We really need so little. I wear the same things all the time anyway.

Okay, okay i too will join the decluttering fad there is a corner of our basement with so many hardware odds and ends, leftover paint etc that we can'tmove around down there, if i knew how to post a pic like mindy i would be brave enough for the accountability
bethyou are one strong lady, hope the cochlear implants work out to improve your hearing, my dh is completely deaf in one ear and wont even look into hearing aid for his "good ear"

Good morning everyone,
I am completely new here - just kind of went from an email from Panera Bread into MFP and saw this group and voilá, here I am. I have been struggling with my weight for over 20 years and have not have any success with programs and nutritionists, always ending with shoulders shrugged and and telling me I should not be at the weight that I am. I have been kind of giving up on things a bit - divorce and several health issues have been piled onto a stressful life of managing my aspiring classical singer, completely renovating the whole downstairs of the house and starting my own company of coaching and photography. I recently turned 50 and feel I have to do something, I owe it to my awesome girls. A group like this might be just what I need - not to feel alone, have some accountability, I think you know what I mean.

Hi, Tawnya - I had gastric bypass as well, more than ten years ago now. Don't know much about the sleeve, but my research tells me that gastric bypass is still the gold standard, as in it's the most effective, more people keep the weight off, etc. Getting insurance to pay for any bariatric surgery is usually the issue--every insurance has different standards, but mine was that you had to be at least 100% over your "ideal weight" for insurance to pay for it. At 5'1" tall, with a 109 pound ideal weight, and actually weighing 303, it wasn't an issue for me. It has also not been an easy road. I had a Petersen's hernia (finally being recognized as a long-term complication), which nearly killed me, and also had to have my gall bladder out, which was months of pain, as it's non-life-threatening and they don't rush to do the surgery.
Not advising against it, just saying do the research. It's not an easy road.

Morning - I think it's a great idea, my comparison pictures are always helpful. Make sure you take them in the same place each month. In front of an outside door is handy, as they have lines and indentations, so you can really tell the difference.0 -

Mindy that looks like it could be a lovely room once it's cleared out. I see some nice hardwood floors in there! And there's nice light coming in the windows.
We had to clean out my MIL house. Yours looks very clean in comparison. We had a horrific hoarding situation. Being able to turn off the emotional attachments really helps with the clean up. (we took out 6 tons ...dumpsters full...from my MILs house).
Food is logged for the day. My weekend wasn't very solid on the food front, but it wasn't too much off.
Yoga class this morning. Work the rest of the day. It's my husband's birthday today (we have 3 birthday's in this house in January). I'm making a blueberry pie since that's what he loves and it's one of the easier things for me to not over indulge in.
I'm enjoying hearing everyone's stories. Impressive successes here that just reinforces the fact that middle age women and be powerhouses!

I am always inspired by reading the posts on here. Everyone deals with things differently, also expresses and does different things. What interesting lives you have and fantastic areas of the world you live. Would love to see photo of where you all live.
Mindi, you have a lot of work to do there. One room at a time is all it needs to get on top of everything, you will feel fantastic when you complete it. I just de-cluttered my back bedroom and I can't tell you how great I feel. It is now a joy to enter through the door.

I can attest that starving yourself doesn't work. I thought I was doing so well by eating almost nothing during the day and using portion control at dinner. Well, I didn't take into account that mindless eating follows at the end of the day. Didn't lose a single pound. I just want to kick myself. Will go back to eating in a normal way (for me) today.

GRITS – Sorry about all your hassle with Groupon. They really do not sell any of the stuff that they market themselves. Instead, they are just negotiating discounts with other sellers. So you have to look at and be comfortable with whoever is really selling the item you are buying. Have you considered having your bank stop your current credit card and issue you a new one? Seems like you’ve had a couple of issues with fraudulent charges. I had one fraudulent charge on my card and my bank immediately cancelled the card for me and sent me a new one.
DJ – I’m with you. I got off my exercise schedule over the holidays and I’m having a hard time getting back in the routine. I’ve got to get back in the habit of getting up and exercising first thing in the morning, but it doesn’t help when my co-workers keep scheduling 7AM meetings. I can’t complain too much on the meetings though, because when they schedule something at 7AM CT that usually means someone from our Hong Kong office is going to be on the call and it’s 9PM there. Anyway, do you still have that boot in your closet? Maybe you can give me a swift kick to get me moving again.

GratTracey91 – Welcome. I’ll be 50 in June and would like to lose about 30 lbs this year, so we are in about the same boat. I’m so sorry to hear that your marriage of 20 years is over. Stick with this group and we can all help motivate each other.

Yesterday was a bit of a bummer for me. My daughter Emma left to go back to college. It was so nice having her home for three weeks. I promised her I would not cry when she left, but then she got teary-eyed and I couldn’t help shedding a couple myself. Good news, though. She has found someone to sub for her in pep band for the basketball game on Friday night, so she is going to come home this weekend to watch her younger sister Sophi perform in her first show choir competition of the season.

Decided to accompany DH on the veg shop because I wanted to take a BIG bag of clothes to the dump. He joined in and we offloaded an old printer and some cardboard boxes. He has caught the decluttering bug and has been doing his study. My son gave him a poster of the town where he was born for Christmas, so he wants to frame that and get it up on the wall. As he was adopted it's especially important to him.
I also took a bag of stuff to the charity shop, so I'm feeling quite a bit lighter! !
Ordered our haggis and bought two packs of mixed game for the freezer and some calves liver for tomorrow. (DH's favourite) . Our local town is one of those rare places these days with a proper high street. Butcher, baker, fish shop, ironmonger, old fashioned sweet shop, green grocer, post office, deli and more. Very lucky. I like the little conversations you have as you visit different shops.

Hi All,
Another old fat chick jumping on the January bandwagon! For some reason this year feels a little different, like this might be the year I actually stick to my guns and make this happen. My husband started on the medifast plan last week and all of a sudden I was the only person in charge of what I ate - and I was making some horrendous choices because we didn't really have much in the way of good choices in the house. Hopefully I fixed that with a little planning and a trip to the grocery store over the weekend.
I see lots of goals on the page here, so I figured I would share mine. Short term (according to the perky little PA at my doctor's office) is to lose 12 pounds and exercise for at least 2.5 hours per week. She would not even entertain an "ideal weight" goal, but in my head, I would be happy to be under 150. That's about a hundred pounds from now.
Long term, I am signed up to walk the Cocoa Beach Half Marathon in October. I did this last October along with a team made up of my step mom, sisters, brother and niece. They are all small to average size people and didn't have to work too hard to be able to walk the distance in a reasonable time. I worked my butt off for four and a half months. I wasn't DFL, but I barely managed to finish within the time limit for the race. I was about 45 minutes behind the rest of the team, and I was totally out of gas. I'm not sure how I walked back to the car, but I think there were tears and cussing involved. So this year, I'd like to finish a little better, maybe be able to walk with everyone else. The only way I'm going to be able to do that is to get some of this weight off my knees and work out to build up endurance.
So, here I am. I'm happy to offer immoral support, unsolicited advice that I haven't yet tried myself, and probably some sass. I welcome the same from you!0 -

Great intro to my little bio, Rosie. My name is Betty and I go by bkrimpet on here. Have been overweight since the age of 6 but managed to slim down in college and my twenties. I'm 5 foot two. I attribute this to: 1. Finally seeing a nutritionist (what a concept to have a person with lifelong weight issues actually talk with a food specialist!); 2. This group, who showed me that older ladies could indeed lose weight ; 3. LOGGING!!! ; and 4. Believing I was worth some self-care after all these years of taking care of everyone else first.
I am 62 and next week I am looking forward to celebrating 40 years with my first and only husband. Have two daughters and love them both dearly, but life is complicated. The "baby" up and flew the coop to halfway around the world to be with an Internet boyfriend and the whole long-distance thing plus some other complicating factors has really put me in a tailspin for a good two years. Still trying to learn how to be the grownup about it while figuring out what I want to do with the rest of my life. I am a librarian and need to work a couple more years but really want to retire.
All my thought processes are in a state of flux it seems. But I know I want time to travel, time to do creative things and the ability to figure out what to do to help others while taking care of myself. I just do not know where I should live to do these things. With two daughters who don't live close by (the other is 600 miles away) I have only a few friends to keep me in my current area (a boring yet somewhat attractive suburb outside of Rochester NY). But there is lots of natural beauty and great local food and cultural activities.
Spent my first 26 years in New Jersey and still have many friends there, but not sure I want to move back there; however I could sure use being closer to a beach!!! Also, spent 3 years near Minneapolis. Have seen 44 states and been to 5 other countries. Love being near the Canadian border so we can bop over from time to time. But also the snow thing is not fun anymore. So what I want is a place closer to the ocean with access to culture and historical sites and I can go on walks and bike rides and I can have an itty bitty garden and a front porch in a relatively crime-free zone and where I know at least some people already and is not too hot and not too cold and oh yes it has to be affordable!!! I don't ask for much, do I? Any advice?
Love reading, traveling, gardening, textile and paper arts, photography, walking in the woods, cooking, music, and the sound of ocean waves. Adore cats but don't want another till I figure out my life some more -- then I am going to badger hubby for another one. Had to mention him again because otherwise this was beginning to sound like a dating site write-up.

Penny - Thanks so much for the photo of the trees. Huh! That was a whole grove of trees. I used to think I would be able to adjust to living anywhere in the world. Not so sure about where you are. I'm not sure I can live in a place with no trees. I thought Iceland would be hard because they have so few trees, but trees that are only 1 inch tall?
Can you tell this thought is boggling my mind? I think I need to travel to your neck of the world just to see it for myself.

Good morning everyone! Brrr! It was cold this morning, but we are promised a little warm up this afternoon. I took the kids to school, then to the Y to work out, then to get my oil changed, then to the studio. At the car place I had a little accident with my new computer. I dropped it, case and all, from about knee high onto the asphalt. It bent up one corner of the bottom part and the screen popped out a little bit. I clicked the screen back in place but can't do much with the bent corner. It still seems to work fine. I guess my pretty case was not very protective. Boo hoo. My pretty new pooter is no longer perfect and new. Maybe hubby can fix it.
Two other ladies and I are meeting for lunch and discussing our new art co-op. It seems to be coming along nicely. We are trying to decide which legal structure we want to go with and will probably go with an LLC. The not for profit thing is too much hassle.
I have really enjoyed all the intro's from you all. Even though I've been around for a couple of years, I learned things that I either never knew or had forgotten. Next month we can just copy and paste from this month.

Annm, welcome. You said, “I am not getting any younger and I need to get moving now”. I just want you to know that since I lost weight I really feel younger. Great loss since the holidays! You go girl, you can do this.
Heather, you know when I typed my weight it sounded like I was pretty close to my goal. I wish I felt that way. I’ll admit that my biggest complaint right now is this roll of skin hanging at the bottom of my stomach. If it weren’t for that I could look damn good in pants.
Tawnya, welcome to a great place for support and information. I’d guess that most of us here that have been “FAT” have at least considered surgery. You will probably hear from some of our regulars that have had it. All I can say is that I didn’t really think I’d be able to lose on my own but with MFP and this group, I’m doing it. The people I know that have had surgery and weren’t committed to eating right unfortunately often gain it back. Definitely, the surgery is for some people but I encourage you to give it a serious try without it, before you make any decisions. We are here to help you.
Michele, I don’t think the woody part of asparagus has anything to do with the way you cook it; it’s just the nature of the beast. I love asparagus and consider breaking off the uneatable ends the same as throwing away the skin and pit of an avocado. One of my favorite ways to cook it is bake it on a cookie sheet with a little Pam and seasonings, but then I like most fresh veggies that way.
Sorry, Barbie, but GOOOOOOOOOO TIGERS!!!!! You know, whoever wins, it should be a good game.
Southernsass, you will find that if you are serious about this journey, eating out becomes less and less fun. Yes, why do I want to go out to eat an expensive salad when I can make a great one at home. The one thing I did learn here, from Barbie is that regardless of the menu, you can ask for exactly what you want, prepared exactly how you want it and many restaurants will accommodate. I do often take my salad dressing with me in case I end up with a salad, and when I do it will typically have some chicken or protein on it.
Mindy, glad you got the GMA smart scale. Be sure to let us know how you like it. It just sounded like such a deal but I have a perfectly good scale, it’s just not as smart. Lol Just think, when you start sorting in that room, you will be able to see results immediately. You can always do 15 minutes at a time and will be shocked at what you can get done. Good luck!!
Karen, my DH has had hearing loss, too. It’s really bad when we go out and he can’t hear the waitress or other people at our table. He also refuses to even think about a hearing aide.

My next cruise is coming up on Feb.6th. I’m excited but getting concerned that my cruise buddy might not be able to make it. She is having major family issues with a DD that is having severe mental issues. My friend is the main care giver for her grandson and I don’t think his mom is in any shape to take care of him for a week. Well, I’m going if I have to go alone and weighing less than any cruise I’ve ever been on. Time to go get in a little more exercise this morning. I’m loving reading about all of you, both the new and my old friends.

Hi, I’m Linda. I’ve been posting here since mid-2015 so I am a newer member of this group. (Some of these ladies have been posting for several years.) I’ll turn 50 in June of this year. I live in a suburb of Des Moines, IA with my husband and two daughters. Actually, my oldest daughter doesn’t technically live here anymore as she is enjoying her first year of college at the University of Northern Iowa. My younger daughter is a sophomore in high school. I work in the technology division of a large bank supporting our international offices in Canada and Latin America, but long to semi-retire as soon as I can convince my husband (probably never). My weight has yo-yo’d for most of my adult life – I would lose 10 pounds but then gain back 20. Last year, I peeked out at 215 and decided it was time for a life change. I lost 20 pounds in 2015 and I hope to lose 30 more this year. Slow and steady is the name of my game and I depend on the support of the great ladies on this thread.

I was busy with sports and shopping and such this weekend, so I didn’t get much chance to read, so I am starting on page 34. If I have time at work, I will work backwards in an attempt to catch up. Please accept my congratulations to everyone who had successes this weekend. Hugs for all who need one or more ! ! !
The few times this weekend when I struggled with food, I was able to honestly log then get immediately back on the wagon, and I did no damage in the long run. Yay me ! ! !
I’m so glad my DS is self-confident. Saturday at H.S. bowling, our team was tied with the other school 4.5 to 4.5 . In order for our team to win the match, my son needed the 10th frame to be 2 strikes in a row followed by 2 or more pins. Well, he got the first strike, so another strike we win, anything less we lose. His next ball only knocked down 9 pins, which meant the game and match went to the other team. My son dropped his head a little, but the Mom sitting behind me stood up clapping her hands and cheering “ WooHoo Yeah ! ! !” My son picked up the spare, and we lost by 1 pin. I turned around the that Mom and said “if I EVER cheer for another child’s failure, it is time to swat my upside the head. If you ever do that again, I will swat you upside the head”. The Tournament official spoke to her, and if she ever does it again she will be banned from all H.S. matches. There should be a class called “how to behave at your child’s athletic events”.
Now it is already time for lunch. I have been busy at work again today – Yay ! ! !

Sweetnsouth...: We eat out on a regular basis & have some strategies you may want to consider. It helps that we're both watching our weight & can cooperate. Many times we order something and split it. Sometimes I ask for a "togo" container and put half of my meal into it before I take my first bite. It becomes lunch the next day. Sometimes I order a couple of healthy appetizers to be served with the meal instead of before hand. Several chains have menus and calorie information posted online, and that can help plan in advance. Good luck finding a happy balance. It can be done.

Boston Mindy: Good luck disposing of excess things. ebay is a good idea, and so is donating. We give a lot of things to the Senior Center Thrift Store in our town. You can write the donations off on taxes, but we don't usually. The thrift store helps pay for the services of the senior center, such as lunches in the center, and meals on wheels for those who can't afford to pay. Kim's "freecycle" is a great idea. I've never heard of it before.
Mary from MN: I also retired from teaching. I taught 8th grade social studies; all USA all the time including history from prehistoric times to shortly after the Civil War, government, & economics. My first year at 8th grade was H*ll but I came to love the kids and the subject matter.

I got interested in orchids last year. I bought one for DDIL for Easter but it ended up staying here. Now I have 4. Yesterday I finally went out and got some decent Orchid fertilizer, so maybe I'll eventually get some of them to re-bloom. They're glorious in bloom, but not so exciting without flowers. Years ago I got an African Violet and wound up with dozens. I only have one now. I wonder if the Orchid interest will also go away over time. It seems possible and even likely. :ohwell:
Yoga today! Yay! I'll enjoy it with the wrist brace on and preventing additional damage. I hope to go to the gym with my neighbor tomorrow and will ride a recumbent bike in the machine room while she does Zumba. I don't think I'm ready for the spin bikes at this point. I'd be putting too much pressure on the wrist.

2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
3. Have fun every day.
4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
5. Eliminate alcohol.
6. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.

Mindy, it is going to look fantastic when you are finished. I saw some gorgeous wooden floors and I absolutely am in love with that space with the wrap-around shelves. Oh, if only you lived close by! I would be all over jumping in and helping you. I spent my spring break helping my sister one year. It was the most fun I've ever had on vacation.
I turned down a long-term sub job offer this weekend. It would have involved a 45-minute commute and I would have to give up my newly found 9:15 weight training class. I couldn't see doing that.
Kim, I used to do free cycle all the time, but I have gotten out of the habit. I never took anything, though. I always gave away. I couldn't believe what some people wanted. When I was a regular reader, I got to recognizing the names of the frequent participants and would let them just come to my house if they had been around a while. I never had any problems. If it was someone new, I would meet up somewhere close to home where I had errands.

OK, those of you who are on the BLT Challenge (sounds like a sandwich!) I'm on team YELLOW. Yay Yellow!
Heather - I love watching birds and your birch looks like just the place. No birds here in Svalbard in the winter. (Actually, there are some, but it's so dark you can't see them.) As soon as we get to our island place down south we fill the bird feeders and wait. In Sweden, bullfinches are considered winter birds but there we get them year round. The only down side is I don't burn many calories bird-watching through my kitchen window.
Mia - Yes, I can tell your mind is boggling all over the place! Iceland is great and Svalbard is great - for people of a certain disposition. These places are so extreme I'm convinced you either love them or hate them. Nothing in between. C'mon over and I'll show you around!
DJ - We don't call it ground cover here, because it doesn't even do that much! Here's another picture that will give you an impression of what the ground and the landscape can look like. Pretty darn bare!
Kay (DrKatie) - I'd say that was a good call. A 45 minute commute is not fun. :noway:
