What nobody tells you about losing weight

You may have troubles seeing yourself as the new slimmer you. It is years later and I still do not recognize myself in pictures sometimes.2

I've seen other people post about this before and thought "how could that be?" Then yesterday I was tagged in a Facebook post and couldn't find myself. The Better Half had to point me out. An oddly unnerving feeling.4 -
Those so-called friends who snub you or make snarky remarks about your weight loss journey are NOT your friends. True friends are not jealous but are inspired by your hard work and dedication. So out with with weight and in with new friends if your old friends aren't supportive. :-)5

Being told your to skinny hurt just as much being told your fat... Just had talk with some friends about this double standard that it ok walk up and tell someone their to skinny but you can't say someone is fat without people get all upset. Neither should be done. If you worried about someone health go them privately not publicly embarrassing them.5

I agree, I was lucky that my closest friends have been really supportive. I had a few people on the outskirts of the friends that were not supportive. Most of them just said nothing, I did get one..."most people gain it all back plus some" in a very snide tone.3 -

MFP works and I know it, however, I don't stick to it for the time the process needs. Many of you post about it being easier finally and you found determination or similar statements. My question is how/what clicked to change for you guys because that is what I am trying to find at the moment.
I was 29 and deeply depressed. I knew that the older I got, the harder it would be to lose weight. I hated myself for the way I looked. I decided I HAD to lose weight and I knew I had to be successful. So, I researched. What did successful people do? I found out that I needed to take it one meal, one choice, and one day at a time. I decided that the weight didn't pile up overnight and I shouldn't expect it to fall of that quickly either. As long as I saved the high calorie food for special occasions then, I could be guilt free. I have been at this for a year and a half and only lost 50 pounds. While, that is slow I don't worry too much about it because I'm living my life.

I know it's been said many times already but I never imagined I would feel so cold. Especially my hands. Hopefully the trade off will be not sweating so much in the summer.2

That you'll fight yourself over the clothes sizes you think you should be in and the size that you actually are. I was trying to find compression pants and battled myself over what size I really am. I had my little ones with me, so after 5 mins I just grabbed a couple of sizes, tried them on and the smaller ones fit! Yay! Double yay to the fact I can get better cuts and colors of clothes a lot easier (and cheaper) now.3

In addition to actually (finally) understanding the calorie load and nutrient value of the food I am eating, MFP is teaching me patience. I am okay with weight-loss progress moving more slowly ... I know I am moving in the right direction.1

How depersonalizing your body change can be. Sometimes you feel like you're in the wrong body, like you snuck into someone else's. Last night I was casually grabbing my belly and there was much less to grab than before and it actually shocked me. Like my heart flipped over for a second. It was actually scary. Hopefully I'll get used to it. I've only lost ~15lbs total so far.8

@KareninLux This. So much this. I'm in zero rush to change my body or reach my goal. I have so much patience and understanding for myself. I've learned so much about self acceptance on this journey, glad you have too!1 -

When i was at my smallest.. people suddenly treated me like a human.
140lbs dropped my shopping? People flocked over the pick it up for me.
250 lbs dropped my shopping? Haha fatty dropped the food.
Underwear was a joy to buy, browsing all the pretties. Now it's an embarrassing necessity, trying to scoop up a pack of plain, giant granny knickers without anyone seeing.
On a positive note. I practically ran up a mountain that used to cripple me. I had curves going on and out, not just out.
I can't wait to look less like a big toe!6 -
i dont recognize myself in picture.. yup so much differences when comparing the picture of before and progress.. its still is hard to believe that i did look so much smaller..
very difficult to find clothes size because i need to convince myself that the smaller size now fit. In fact i end up buying clothes with the size a tad too big even after i lose weight. Its baggy and i cant wear it. So, trying it out before buying is definitely the option.
of coz, i still love clothes shopping. especially when i can actually fit into the cute clothes..
lying on the floor is uncomfortable..
all the money you need to spend on new clothes. and shoes.. and apparently if you lose some more, again money to change your entire wardrobe.. huh..
although im pretty sure we're doing it with a very big proud smile on our face..

Along with this goes the desire to never wear ill-fitting or baggy clothes again. I spent a couple years in baggy clothes as my weight came off. Before that, I pretty much just bought whatever fit. Now I'm picky and I hate wearing baggy clothes.
A thousand times this! I go in changing rooms now after years of picking up stretchy stuff and crossing my fingers...

@Angelfire365 Fellow 34H wearer here. Try amazon.com. I purchased some really supportive ones for around $40! :-)

How the effort and mindset of the act of losing weight becomes a blueprint for other things in life you want to achieve.
The application itself is what's life changing, more so than the actual loss.
I agree, the self control and confidence you gain from making the choices needed to reach you goal is the real prize.-1 -
That you can get new stretch marks.2

That is takes a while to realize I am not always the biggest girl in the room. I will still pick out people and ask my husband, "am I the same size as her?"...he laughs and tells me I am delusional. I have no perception of my real size.8

I've lost 85 pounds and my husband lost 75 pounds in 2014 and we have kept it off. Someone close to us has said on numerous occasions, " I liked you guys better the other way."
It's hard when someone close to you hasn't lost their weight and they don't cheer for you when you have.13 -

That is so sad.2 -

That is rough and IMO wrong of them to say.0 -

I think a lot of us suffer from that. Some days hell a lot of days I feel like the me that was 120 pounds heavier.1 -

How does anyone know if someone is handicapped? People who use wheelchairs, walkers and crutches are not the only handicapped people. There are tons of invisible handicaps and judgy mcjudgy people who feel like they determine if someone is handicapped annoy me. I have Crohn's disease and many times need the extra space. I don't look disabled so people make snide comments. I have the same right to use that stall as anyone else.6 -

I find myself telling them that I recently lost weight, like they care I do wonder what the statute of limitations is on "recently". I reached my current weight last fall. If in 5 years I'm still saying that I recently lost weight, that might not be quite right! But I imagine it will still feel recent to me!1 -
I'm in a great spot because my style was always for smaller girls and when I was big, I could never wear the kind of stuff I wanted to.. Asian fashion has always been something I've dreamed of wearing and I just got back from San Francisco and visited Chinatown and jtown.. I fit into and bought things that were at one time a complete impossibility.. I never got past the window shopping phase before, and last week, everything I tried on, fit.. It was truly a dream come true for me.. A Long awaited one!

That's AMAZING!!!! I know just how you feel - what a great feeling it is to finally look on the outside the way you have always seen yourself from the inside.3 -
I never knew how easy it would be to pick up my fitness levels after a couple of months of not really working out. The fitness, stamina and strength I've been working on for two years don't just disappear overnight. This realisation hopefully means I won't give up when I have a short set back6

That people fall over themselves to help you out. ....at the storage place today they all helped me lug boxes.....60lb ago they would have run away.2

people who see me every day have commented so surely it should be noticeable to people I only see every month or so. I shouldn't allow other people to make me feel bad but... it hurts!
Or they really may not have noticed. Two Septembers ago, I was sure people in the chorus would notice that I'd lost a couple pants sizes over the summer. Nobody said a thing. Several months into the season, people started to notice.

For me it was 213 lbs, the nth warning that I was close to diabetes, and a directive to drop white carbs from my diet. For some reason, even though it covered all the candy,
chips, and ice cream I'd been snacking on, it didn't feel like dieting.
Now that I'm at goal, I'll have candy, when I have the calories for it. I no longer scarf down the whole bag of Ghirardelli squares, but nibble and savor one or two or three, depending on calories remaining.3
