Diet drinks?

Are zero calorie/or diet drinks bad for u? Or make it harder to loose weight?
I drink them all the time. I don't know why they would be bad if they don't have anything in them, but I read something about it and was curious.

They can cause cravings for higher sugar items, in essence sabotaging your hard work if you give in. Also, they can cause water retention and bloating. Neither is very attractive. Dropping soda and switching to water was my first change.6

Some people have issues or intolerances with the artificial sweeteners in diet drinks. Those people may need to avoid them. But if you don't have any problems with them then diet drinks should be fine in moderation.12

I drink two cans of Diet Mt Dew every day and it hasn't prevented me from losing weight. Some people think they're bad because of the aspartame. If you google aspartame there's a lot of controversy on it causing cancer. I just shrug it off because apparently everything causes cancer these days.15

Do they make your cravings worse? Because if they don't , you're fine. I drink diet Dr Pepper and have lost 50+ lbs and its never affected me negatively.6 -

Fortunately, the increased cravings don't happen to everyone. If anything, a diet dr pepper relieves my cravings for sweet things instead of making them worse. But I'm glad you found what works for you. Hopefully the OP can play around and find what's right for them, too.9 -

Honestly I have no idea I crave sugar anyways. I love candy like I have a probable lol. But I haven't been able to tell a big difference before when I do or don't drink them. I just don't want it to affect me loosing weight or make this journey of mine even harder then it is.0 -
Ive lost 75lbs drinking diet coke daily...usually 3-4 cans.4

There are a lot of people who are going to say "yes they are bad for you" or that the lost weight just by cutting out diet drinks. Both are scientifically not true (unless you have a medical condition).5

I drink copious amounts of diet soda. I've done so since 2008 or so, whether I was working on my weight or not. No plans to change that. I can't stand soda with real sugar in it. I love ice water as well, but it's secondary to my love affair with Coke Zero.5

I lurve diet Dr Pepper. It's a pink puffy heart love. If drinking it is wrong, I don't want to be right.8

Do they personally cause cravings for you? If not, then there's absolutely no need to cut 0 calorie drinks out. I drink them occasionally and love them, and they aren't problematic for me.1 -
I can't speak for anyone else or science, but they make me crave sweets which are my weakness, so I avoid them.1

Individuals will always have varying subjective responses to foods - but unless you have a medical condition or an allergy there is no need to avoid diet sodas.
If you individually find they increase cravings or whatever, then don't drink them.
But most people do not find that.0 -
The artificial sweeteners aren't good for you. And neither is the caramel coloring. And the carbonation/acidity of the drinks themselves can both some people with sensitive stomachs. That said, they're fine in moderation. I try not to drink more than 2 or 3 a week, and I try to stick to Zevia, Honest Fizz, and the like since they use stevia to sweeten instead of sucralose or aspartame.2

this has been studied and debunked many times.5 -
It all depends on you, for some people it creates cravings, for others it does not. I have always drank them and it does not cause me to crave other things0

Most belief that it induces hunger is via the power of suggestion or behavioral/social conditioning . As far as I'm aware no credible studies have shown this to be the case in humans. What has been demonstrated is the following
1. Overweight individuals are more likely to drink diet soda than their healthy weight counterparts
2. Some overweight individuals eat more food than they otherwise would have if they substitute diet soda for sugared soda
I'm pretty sure #1 is adequately explained by the fact that overweight individuals are likely to be at least somewhat aware that they should not cuisine so many calories from soda and motivated to swap drinks. The second point is a substitution effect.
If you're not allergic to aspartame or sucralose and don't find them unpalatable, there's nothing diet - defeating about them.

I drink at least a 2-liter of diet soda a day. I have for many years. It's never harmed my weight loss nor made me crave anything. I find the carbonation helps me feel fuller since it feels like it's expanding my stomach and feels like I just ate a snack.0

I drink diet soda and don't have any issues with my weight loss. I don't notice any cravings either. I mean I crave the soda so I have one and then I'm good. It doesn't increase my cravings for "bad" food or anything like that.0

I've been drinking a diet soda everyday for the last 10-14 years. I've never been overweight, never had a problem losing vanity lbs. It doesn't make me crave sweet foods, in fact it probably satisfies my craving for sweets.0

Just logical folk posting logical information.
I drink diet sodas constantly. It helps destroy my sweet cravings.
If I did away with them, I'd probably binge even more.3 -
I think this depends on everyone. Diet soda becomes an addiction, the same as regular soda, or coffee would. Honestly, i'm confused how anyone can think it's 'good' for you, considering it is entirely artificial.
By quitting diet soda, I lost weight and reduced the majority of my fibromyalgia symptoms. Most people may not have an issue with this, but I have a reaction to aspartame that causes immense body pain and flare ups.1 -

You lost weight because you were in a deficit, diet soda has no calories.2 -
