August (2016) Running Challenge

As predicted, I worked past 5 PM today with my replacement and his boss in the office this afternoon. Took stock of time and mental status, and made the call to turn it into a rest day instead of squeezing in an easy run and probably shorting myself on sleep.
I have hope that tomorrow my replacement and his boss will have to leave early to catch a plane. Then I might be able to leave early and get to the club for speed work after a probable binge day with my retirement luncheon. At least food was under control today.
Day after tomorrow, I'll turn in my badge and my computer.
This evening, I came home and fired up the work computer just to look at email, because I can't respond to meeting invitations on my iPhone. My replacement's boss had invited me to a meeting on September 6 to follow up today's late conference call. I'm sure it was mindless reply all or forward all on his part, but I declined with a note that I have a more pressing commitment that day. And a smiley.8 -
@mobycarp what a wonderful and exciting time for you. Congrats!0

Thanks everyone for the concern about my heel. I did some research yesterday and decided it is Achilles tendinitis. I watched the KT Tape videos and followed the taping instructions and it helped immensely. Last night I wore my compression sock over the tape and iced it and got up this morning pain free. It did not bother me all day except after Agility class tonight. I wear trail runners so I don't slip on the grass and it may be just all the stops and turns that irritated it. I will repeat last night's course of action and hopefully it will be fine in the morning again.
I got out late today for my run and it was too hot! I took the pup and really should have left him home. We stopped at all the drinking fountains and I made sure to dump some water on his ears and belly to cool him down but taking him was a bad move on my part regardless of how eager he was to go. Tomorrow we need to go early or he will have to stay home. Even at agility tonight it was 85F (8-9pm) and all the pups were sluggish. Hobbes as a Vizsla is fortunate to not have much hair but the Husky and Irish Setter were really hot and struggling
@katharmonic - I also changed my profile picture in honor of your pup. I think @skippygirlsmom had a great idea there! I know when you are ready there will be a pup just waiting to be loved!
@_nikkiwolf_ - what a fantastic hike and run! The view is incredible!
@ceciliaslater - I am so sorry about the chafing but think it is awesome that you have aready gotten to where you can run a long run!
@MobyCarp - Congratulations on retiring!! It must be so exciting!! I wish it were me!! I keep thinking in my head... just one more year, just one more year! That's assuming I don't get laid off first
@ddmom0811 - no wonder you slept in this morning! I can't imagine getting up to run after a tough ride like that and being so exhausted.
@mom3over40 - I have run the Holiday Half every year - I think this will be the 4th. The trail is nice and the freeway isn't bad - it isn't scenic like running along the ocean for La Jolla or Surf City but it isn't terrible either and the race is well organized and not nearly as big as those others. There is one section where you turn off the trail and go under the freeway to loop around to the finish that I really dislike but all in all it is a nice run ending at Torrey Pines State Beach. It is a pretty fast course with some hills but mostly it is down hill - I got my HM PR there the 2nd time I ran it and have not matched it since Let me know if you will be running and we can meet up before or after the race. I usually come and stay at a hotel right near the start which is really convenient. Also there are some videos of the race from previous years on the website from drones and you can see the course.
@Elise4270 - I am with you on the Iron Nun - she is amazing!
@RespectTheKitty - isn't it great when you realize you can do more than you thought possible?! Great job!
@KatieJane83 - love the descriptor - 'craptastic'! I will definitely use it when I have a run like that! It just says it all!
@skippygirlsmom - you definitely can and should be the proud momma! You have an amazing daughter!
@HonuNui - I saw news today that talked about storms heading for Hawaii and possible flooding. Hope you are safe and on high ground!

In the UK park runs are weekly timed events in local public parks mostly 5k but some longer. They are entirely run by volunteers and are free to everyone. Can be from 20 to 500(+) participants.2

I see a lot on here about Parkrun. Can someone enlighten me as to what that is?
Worldwide, 121,731 parkrunners ran a 5k parkrun this week.

Parkrun is HUGE in the UK and Australia, and getting bigger every week.
It's a free, weekly, timed, 5 km run, organised by volunteers.
It. Is. Awesome.
You guys need to get some more going in the USA.

Had my longest run yesterday (9km), and was the first time in my 7week running career I actually felt like a runner - by that I mean I just genuinely enjoyed running (previously had been about the achievement), rather than just feeling worried about how stupid I looked or how much my belly was wobbling!
Anyway, after my great run Saturday I was expecting a bit of a dip. However, yesterday was my longest (8.94km) run at fastest average pace (6:24 per km) including my fastest 5k (31:24) so just felt great. Today, I rounded out my month with a short 3km jog including a big hill (had been avoiding so far) which was hard but not as difficult as I expected. [Never thought I'd call 3k short!]
Smashed my monthly target, and now just planning how to attack September. Thanks all for the inspiration...

@MobyCarp - Congratulations! Were you at the same company for many years?
5.2 miles. I haven't been focusing on anything on my runs the past week or so. But just now I looked and was surprised how slow my miles were today. (Mile five was 10:08, which is my usual speed and the rest were all 11 something). I just feel like running and not thinking about anything. It is so relaxing. Maybe I will do intervals tomorrow. Or maybe I will just run.

I was away for a long weekend (3 days) and came back to over 250 posts to read through. I skimmed. I can't wait to see how many posts I will come back to after 10 days in the UK!
Saturday morning, my boyfriend and I were out of the house at about 4:50. We had the car packed for a 3-day weekend in Ocean City, NJ with friends. Dave went to row with is boathouse at 6:30, and I decided to do my 9-mile run along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. I ran "the loop," which is 8 miles, and tacked an extra out-and-back mile along the portion of the Schuylkill River Trail south of the Art Museum running from the museum to the Vine Street Expressway and back to finish in front of Dave's boathouse (Fairmount Rowing Association). I 100% forgot that there is a bit of an incline for the majority of the half mile south of the museum. By the 8.25 mile mark, I was a bit gassed, and then had to run up a decent incline for the better portion of a half mile. I did it, though. The weather was absolutely perfect for a morning run, and I still absolutely love running along the river. I wish I had somewhere like this a bit closer to my place to run.
Here's a photo I took around mile 7 of my run.
This is about a mile north of the Art Museum on Martian Luther King Jr. Drive.
Monday morning, I decided to run a very warm and humid 4 miles along the OCNJ boardwalk. I'm glad I did it, but man, was it brutal! I actually had a running buddy, as Dave decided he wanted to go with me. I never have a running buddy, so it was a welcome change. Even when we do races together, we never actually run together. I used to be faster than him, now he's faster than I am. We did have to stop around 2.75 miles for the National Anthem and morning flag raising thing, but it was a welcome break.
I am now back to reality and will be scrambling to get my house cleaned and myself all packed to leave for the UK after work on Friday. I hope to get one more 4-5 mile run in sometime tomorrow or Thursday, but I guess that would depend on how the cleaning and packing goes over then next few days.5 -
8/1 - Intended to run 4, but oversleeping and a thunderstorm kept it from happening :-(
8/2 - Bodypump class, followed by Abs/Core class. I may be too uncoordinated for this ab stuff...I feel like a bull in a china shop for sure.
8/3 - 4.11 miles. Cool but foggy/sticky. Felt like running through a shower.
8/4 - 5 miles on treadmill (Trek class). The Y was so humid, kinda felt like I was outside anyway.
8/5 - Bodypump class.
8/6 - 6.33 miles with HM training group.
8/7 - Rest Day.
8/8 - 4.25 miles. Felt good!
8/9 - Unplanned rest day. Some annoying back pain kept me awake all night, so I "overslept" without actually getting any sleep.
8/10 - 4.3 miles in 75°, 90% humidity...plus, owl.
8/11 - 4.95 miles on treadmill (Trek class). Then, some quick upper body weights. Again, humid.
8/12 - Spin Class...not sure I have ever sweat that much in my life
8/13 - 6 mile group run with HM training group. Nice pace, cooler temp.
8/14 - Rest / housework day. Ended day with an unnecessary trip to the ER for my 10 year old. Even Moms that are Pediatric nurses overreact once in a while
8/15 - Slept in due to that ER visit.
8/16 - Bodypump class, followed by Abs/Core class.
8/17 - 5.04 miles. Started in a pleasant, light rain...ended in humidity.
8/18 - 4.27 miles. Weather was OK, but felt like a slog. Just one of those days, I guess
8/19 - Spin Class, followed by upper body weights.
8/20 - 6.22 miles. Group run. Light rain at start, pretty cool temperature. Loved it!
8/21 - Yard work / house work / rest day.
8/22 - 4.0 miles. Cool, comfortable morning.
8/23 - Bodypump class, followed by Abs/Core class (still feel clumsy)
8/24 - Unplanned rest day...woke up with back pain / spasms that got worse as the day went. Yuck!
8/25 - 5 miles in cool but humid weather. Back feels tender/weak, but no pain. Wonder if I did something wrong in my abs/core class on Tuesday morning.
8/26 - Spin class, then upper body weights. If sweating gets rid of toxins, I should be clean as a whistle.
8/27 - 7.5 miles. Group run. Flat and relatively speedy.
8/28 - Rest day at amusement park.
8/29 - 3.41 miles, then a short walk.
8/30 - 3.1 treadmill miles, then weights and abs.
@instantmartian - Beautiful! I love running near water. Doesn't happen for me often, but it is always relaxing.3 -
<<<@katharmonic here's a pic my little girl Penny Lane in support of dog lovers everywhere. She hasn't been able to run with me since last Tuesday, she's been a little under the weather, but today we're going out there together again. I hope you'll find another poochie to love, and who needs love, again soon!
@shanaber I'm so glad you seem to have figured out the heel issue. Hope it continues to improve. The heat is back again in full force. It seems like every Labor Day is a scorcher here in So Cal. Glad Hobbes survived the heat okay!
Just waiting for the sun to come up here so I can get my run in! Have a great run everyone!0 -
So I know I never really followed any kind of training plan for my half marathon, and have always felt slight nagging guilt about it, cause I know I really should. I was also worrying because my long runs are pretty much 50% of my weekly mileage, which is a no-no, but I didn't want to add too much too quickly, considering I somehow had a 30+ mile increase from June to July (not intentionally, I didn't realize I'd done that til I looked at my graphs). However, I feel just slightly better because I was just looking up HM training plans to check out taper weeks and I discovered that my 'not any official training plan' training has actually pretty closely mimicked Hal Higdon's Novice 2 HM Training Schedule, lol. The numbers don't align exactly, and the schedule is slightly different, but it's darn close!
My training started out at 2 short runs per week, but increased up to 3, plus my long run on Sundays. My schedule has been:
Mon - rest
Tues - short run (3 miles increased up to 4 miles) + sometimes lifting session
Wed - short run (2 miles increased up to 3 miles, will be bumping to 4 this week) + Zumba cross-training
Thurs - rest + easy yoga
Fri - short run (3-4 miles [often a speed session]) + sometimes lifting
Sat - Zumba cross-training
Sun - long run (currently up to 12 miles)
And here's Hal Higdon's:
Overall mileage-wise it's not that far off, so I feel a little better, lol.5 -

I did part one of a daily double this morning. I wasn't going to update until I finished part 2, but I hit goal, so I figured, what the heck. My first mile this morning was with the puppy and I tried the hands-free leash for the first time. I was very surprised that I liked it. I was afraid she could pull me too hard and might drag me over, but it's pretty apparent that's not going to happen. Still had a lot of sniff stops, but we managed. After time spent messing with the leash and dealing with her sniff habits, I ran out of time to get in the 5 miles I wanted. Ended with 3.7. I have a 72 minute run with 4 ten minute cruise intervals on the schedule for this evening. That is likely to pan out somewhere between 8 and 9 miles. I am thinking that I will probably end up just shy of 200 miles for the month. I have not had a 200 mile month since last September. Hmmm. I may have to do a little re-planning for tomorrow...

@greenolivetree Yes I know my ticker is behind. My work blocks the ticker site so it's a pain to update unless I am home. I can do it from my phone but not always convenient as cell service is not that all great here too.
@RespectTheKitty No September yet. I should get a move on it, huh? I will probably do it this afternoon.3 -
Trying to just add distance and some hills for now. Hopefully speed will eventually catch up. Did an out and back on the horse trails with my dog. It has a hill at the halfway point and for the first time I was able to actually run up it.....YAY! Kept my HR fairly moderate and just tried to keep a steady pace.

I thought that was taken in Europe! Beautiful!
I didn't know there was an Ocean City, NJ. I've been to Ocean City, MD many times. Probably every state has one.
Have a great trip to the UK!
