Barbie from beautiful NW Washington
Resolutions for September (with end of the month comments)
*continue meditating daily increasing time by 5 seconds every few days (this has been my greatest accomplishment--now meditating 15 minutes every morning and feel that the meditation has increased my ability to be peaceful about my surgery and long recovery)
*sort and discard papers from the next box of old treasures (did some, but not much)
*do stretching and exercises for 10 minutes three days a week with Jake while he does exercises from physical therapy (we both failed miserably)
*play bocce with Jake four times ( he decided that he hadn't recovered enough from his surgery to play bocce so after playing once in August, we haven't played again)
Resolutions for October
*follow the directions of the medical professionals for recovery from surgery
*make daily use of my word for 2016-- "alacrity"....I will greet all experiences in my life with cheerful readiness
*knit three blankets for Project Linus

Barbie - thank you so much for keeping us moving forward. I am so glad you are home and on the road to recovery.
My goal for now is to focus on getting healthy and determining what is causing the rash and getting it cleared up and GONE.

Barbie - so it sounds like you p**d and p**ped -- good for you (and just in time for the new month....lol)

Gloria - Sooooooo happy to see you! Is that a stunningly smart new haircut I see in your profile pic?
Janetr - Winging you healing thoughts.
Thoughts are turning to packing instead of moving. Weather forecast is hot sun in the daytime and cooler at night. Not too hard, but I hope it's not too hot in Granada. I'm not good in the heat. Spanish heat is better than English heat though, as it's dry.
We have only paid the airline for one suitcase between us, so I will have to be disciplined.
I am really looking forward to speaking Spanish. I have worked hard at brushing it up. I used to be good, but got very rusty. Now I hope it is shining.
I cooked and froze a MOUND of chickpeas last night - about 10 tins worth. I'm so glad I rediscovered my pressure cooker. Having a curry tonight using some of them.

Barbie~ once again thank you thank you for keeping us together.. and so glad you are home, I am sure Brandy and Sasha and Bernie the cat were just thrilled to see you..
Heather looked up where you told us to in Hove.. that looked look like very small apartment and not much room.. I hope you find just what your looking for1 -

Good morning! Happy Saturday to all! Having a hard time kicking the blahs. It has been raining for six days, here. I know, it's not as bad as the places like parts of Maryland or Baton Rouge. Sitting in the dunes, we really don't get the flooding. But six days of no sun is taking it's toll on me. I am one of those people that would much rather have snow, than rain. At least I can still get out in the fresh air with the snow. Speaking of snow, makes me think of Penny. Last I heard, she was busy, busy with job offers. If you are out there, Penny, know I am thinking of you!
Gloria- glad to see you back and it is AWESOME that they offer a discount for internet due to the fact that the kids need it. Tuba lessons! Yikes! Not sure they make ear plugs strong enough to cancel that sound out!
Heather-Wondering if you have considered a "living wall" garden? It would work in a small space and give you a pretty green wall. I am thinking of making the fence on the north side of my yard a "living wall" with my herbs and strawberries, next spring. I love gardens, but can't really see putting one in my yard with my daycare kids playing back there.
Barbie- You, dear lady, should always wear a cape! Surgery, recovery, and she gets home to continue our group into October! Hope you are feeling better, soon! Take it easy!
Janet- could the rash be a reaction to a medicine you are on? Didn't the rash begin shortly after you started on the steroid?
Allie The blue heron sounds great! I got a laugh out of the image of a lifesize heron on an aging breast. I am just getting a script tattoo. The words carpe diem at the base of my hairline on my neck.
Melanie in Baton Rouge- So good to hear from you! It sounds like you are busy getting things back to "normal". What a crazy couple of months you have had in your city, what with the rioting and the flooding. I hope things settle down and get back to normal for you so you can enjoy the holidays.
Well, my goals for October are to keep on logging and keep working toward my goals.
And now, to run errands, in the rain...5 -

Yeah for Barbie!. Keeping us going and getting home from the hospital in one fell swoop. Amazing.
Heather happy travels, may the Spanish trip off your tongue. You are ready for any adventure
Glo I love the sound of the tuba. Funny and strong all at the same time. Hope the Internet hookup works well for you all
Feel like I should weigh more than the scale says, but no the number is right where I want it to be, weird but I'll take it.
Resolutions for October:
1. Focus on home cooking and little food waste
2. No retail shopping unless for groceries and necessary purchases. In other words don't shop for entertainment or when feeling down.
3. Focus on the positives of my work and get through Tuesday work with alacrity
4. Back to the gym if DH isn't available to walk with me
And as always log every bite, move every day, lather rinse repeat!!

KJ wrote - Janet- could the rash be a reaction to a medicine you are on? Didn't the rash begin shortly after you started on the steroid?
No, they put me on the steroids to clear up the rash. Which it did, it just keeps coming back as soon as I'm off the steroids. I've not changed any meds, detergents, anything. Ive been racking my brain trying to come up with anything at all I may have done differently. Nothing

Allie - No we won't be buying a small apartment. Not at this stage of our lives. I might do if I am ever on my own. I am incredibly noise sensitive, so it would have to be in a very well insulated building. We are looking for a medium sized house, probably with one or more walls joined to other people. "Semi detached " is very popular in Britain, which means you have one wall in common .But we might have to go for an older terrace.
DH is in burning mode. I have got rid of some very old tax returns.
Haven't really started packing yet, but everything is washed. I did make a last minute effort to get DH to pay for another suitcase, but he thinks we will be ok with sharing one 20 kg. My problem is always shoes, toiletries and makeup. Summer weight clothes don't take up a lot of room. I will check in late tonight - 36 hours ahead.
I have roasted some butternut squash for the curry and some cauliflower, zucchini and red pepper. The sauce is made with the chick peas, so it will just be ten minutes stirring at the end. I like my dinner more or less prepared by 3 pm.I will be adding spinach and tomatoes and having it with raita. There will be enough left for my lunch tomorrow.
We had some corn bread for lunch from our local baker. Very nice.
Well, I'm going to attack the toiletries.

Barbie: Thanks for the new thread!
Gloria: I agree with Heather about your hair. You look stunning! I am glad that you are back.
Yesterday I went to a reunion of the staff that opened an elementary school where I worked for several years. Many of them are also now retired. It was wonderful to see them! There were two women I'd hoped to see that didn't make the reunion. One of them was a good friend that I don't get to see very often. Our Principal hosted the event in her home. It was altogether lovely.
Here are my September Resolutions and comments:
September Resolutions:
1. Log every bite and swallow. Done.
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength. Done. My experiment with kettlebells didn't go as well as I'd hoped and I've backed away for now.
3. Have fun every day. Done!
4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more! I'm getting better at this over time, but I still have to remind myself to drink enough water.
5. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly. Sleep is going well.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Morning Ladies,
Heather, the prospects for new houses sounds so exciting. I can’t wait to see what you find to your liking.
Melanie, sorry things are moving so slowly for you. Glad your DD got the apartment. Hang in there and keep us posted as to how things are going with your house.
Carol, sorry it wasn’t the best visit with your mom. I know you will be so happy when you have disposed of all her belongings. (((Hugs)))
Barbie, we are all rooting for you to have success on the throne. (later) So happy you are home!! How are you feeling? Thanks as always for the new month…even surgery can’t keep you down. (((Hugs)))
Joyce, who is your DH texting???? LOL My DH has no desire to know how to text.
Janetr, it sounds like you are being patient although I know you must feel like screaming!!!! I hope the docs can find the cause and a cure and I certainly hope it’s nothing serious. ((((Hugs)))) Ya don’t think you have developed an allergy to your DH???
Heather, I hope you can enjoy your trip and not give too much thought to the move. Have a marvelous time or should I say, Tienen un maravilloso viaje!
NYKaren, how wonderful that the scale is where you want. *sigh* I wish I could say that, but then I’ve not been eating the way I should to make that happen. Keep up the good work!!!
Katla, the reunion sounds like a fun get together. How nice of the principal to host it.
to any Newbies that I missed. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I went to the gym yesterday and had a good workout. I need to be going every day but that’s not happening. My friend that goes on the cruises with me has moved to Texas. At first she said she would fly back to go on our cruise in December but now she keeps dragging her feet. She took her grandson with her so the problem is, who would keep him. I think another friend is going to end up going in her place so she doesn’t have to worry about it. She is thrilled at that possibility. I’ll really miss her going but the last few have been very hard because she has such a hard time walking.
Sending love and good thoughts to all of you and I hope you all have a Happy and Healthy Day and Month.
Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.
and
Opportunity. Each day offers new opportunities for good health and happiness if we just look for them and choose them.
I Love you,
DJ

Hi everyone, I'm new to this thread and am excited to have found you! I'm a 46 year old mother of one, working from home and newly engaged to be married for the first time. My fiance is so supportive of me, whether I want a chocolate bar or want to exercise, that I've chosen to harness his positive energy to get healthy, and he's going to join me.
I just went through my 'dieting' history this past week and have discovered a pattern. I start a new diet every September, do really well and lose 40 pounds or so by January. Then, I go to Mexico in February and return to all my bad habits, regaining all the weight I lost, plus more, by September.
Well, I started again in August this year instead, and I'm focused on different goals. I don't have a goal weight that I'm obsessing about, I'm not dieting, I'm not weighing myself every day, I'm not talking about my diet to friends and family and 'bragging' about how well I'm doing.
Instead, my starting goals are:
* Add two servings of vegetables to lunch and dinner
* Reduce servings of bread, crackers, pasta and rice to three per day
* Eat out once per week
* Eat slowly, completely chewing and savouring my food
* Eat at the dinner table and not on my lap or at my computer
* Drink one cup of coffee per day and stop my evening 'happy hour' with my Coke Zero
* Plan my meals and do food prep with my fiance on the weekends, for the upcoming week
* Track every bite of food/drink that goes in my mouth, no matter what
* Go to the pool 5x/week+ and do 30 minutes+ of water walking/jogging
I'm creating an Excel spreadsheet to track these goals, daily. I like measurable goals so this should help me.
I'm looking forward to following you ladies.

welcome Dana. You are so insightful about your habits. I am sure if you stick with it you will break the cycle. So much of this is about awareness and consistency.
This is a very strong group of women here--keep checking in, this works.

Not a good nights sleep last night but at least I did get some so I am grateful for that. Was thinking about to much last night. Finally did some hunting for contractor to work on Charlie's bathroom. He has other priorities to start with but since he isn't doing anything to get them done, well I'm not either, I decided to work on his bathroom. He has his ileostomy supplies in my small bathroom, it really has quite an odor when he empties it which I know he has no control over. But it takes a while for him to empty it, many times I am really needing to get in there, like first thing of the morning. But just thinking about ALL the work that needs to be done just sent my mind whirling. What is best for us?????? Give in and let an auction house take the whole thing and hope for the best and sell it as is? Work on the house and sell it knowing that the money we spend on working on the house is going to cut into what money we need to buy a new house. We own our house, no mortgage payments for years now. We have no ideas what our medical bills are in the future. It was my intense desire to be able to give this house to Michelle when we died. But I know we can't let that guide what we are dealing with.
So I sent a facebook message to our girls. I have several message groups and just my girls and I are one of them. Michelle immediately wrote back supporting me in that we need to think of ourselves only right now. I knew Christina being in a different time zone was more than likely in bed. So when I get up, there are messages from her. She has a completely different thought. Fix the house up, hire a cleaning service and a lawn service. No matter what we do, I still need to get in my office and bedroom, clean out those shelves, etc and go through them and purge.
Charlie was texting one of his Karaoke buddies. This guy was going to take about a 50 mile drive to sing at a local VFW. So he texted Charlie to let him know his wife said no so Charlie texted OK back. 'OK' was the only thing he texted but he did it. So now our girls and I will expect more from him. Yesterday while he took his walk down to our local wonderful river walk he took some pictures and a video and was so proud of himself. When he came home he asked me to show him how to zoom in and I did that. Last Christmas when I gave him this more expensive phone he was upset but the camera was the main thing I wanted for him. He doesn't play games or anything. He plays Pandora a lot now and many times with a head phone and now can add text and photograph to that. The plan is a tracphone and that is enough for him.
Now Barbie, you got home and created the new page for us but you didn't say anything about how you are. We need to know how you are, not that you created the new page. How are you and Jake, your dogs, etc. Hope you had a good night and knowing you were up bright and early.

JanetR~just saw a very interesting article on Facebook on a place called LittleThings
now this poor woman broke out in hives spots, and got nowhere in 7 yrs of going to Dr's she went on the show the Doctors.. and they finally came up with something. Urticavial vasculitis .. I dont know if that will help you out . but check out Little Things.. if you have facebook , if not google it, and hope this will help you on your quest..4 -
Thanks Barbie glad the surgery is behind you!
Heather Yum!
Janetr the fact steroids work makes me think it has something to do with your immune system. Are your doctors working with you to strengthen it. through diet,, exercise, and sleep? Steroids are anti inflammatory.
Goal for September was to log my food.
Majority of September I did.
For October my goal is work on speaking up for myself in an assertive way. Recently family and friends have made insensitive comments that blindsided me. I either reacted with anger or was so shocked I changed the subject.
Goal is to do things that strength my sense of worth so when insensitive comments come I can put them in perspective or if I need to speak up for myself.
To strengthen self worth.
1. Work on trusting myself to make good decisions.
2. Take care of myself through diet, exercise, sleep
3. Say no when appropriate
4. Say yes when appropriate
Remember "Just because you see the hook does not mean you have to bite."
2 -
Allie, thanks, I'll check it out.
Janetr1 -
Margaret, yes you are correct and because I don't want to be an alarmist or scare myself for no reason, I've not said much, but the doctor has twice mentioned lupus due to breakout in my mouth, etc. That's why he has referred me to the doctor I will see on Wednesday. My mother actually had a type of lupus that affected her muscles and was in a wheelchair the last 10 years or more of her life. He's thinking this may be a type that attacks the skin which is less serious than some.

Thank you, Barbie!
Heather, thank you for explaining about semi-detached as that was something that Bouquet/Bucket snobby lady was always concerned about on that Keeping up Appearances show! It has turned into a running joke at our house...that and riparian entertainments, meaning something embarrassing was going to happen with a boat and well-dressed people. In America I think semi-detached is an end-unit.
Just tried to get a ride in before it rains and it was so windy I did not go very fast, but it must have been extremely aerobic!
