Sweetener - Good or Bad?
Replies
-
Very very bad. Not only have some been shown to cause cancer (although, I think you need to consume a lot for this to be an issue), but they all impact your insulin sensitivity which makes it more difficult to lose weight in the long run.
I know it's easier said than done, as I've been trying to get rid of my sweet tooth for a long time now (with only partial success), but we shouldn't be consuming sweet things regularly enough for the calories to be of significant difference.
I must be a special snowflake then because I lost over 50lbs while using artificial sweeteners every day. I also improved every single health marker my doctor uses (my blood panels are excellent now), and I've also been maintaining the weight loss for several years. I still consume artificial sweeteners every day.2 -

There is no scientific evidence that sweeteners cause cancer and even less evidence that they impact insulin sensitivity.
I once had a sweetener on accident and dead. How can you dispute that evidence?6 -

I don't see sweetener as anything other then what it is, which is sweetener...3 -

*sigh*
So much nope.
It does not cause cancer.
It has no impact on insulin
It does not interfere with weight loss.

NO BASHING PLEASE - I drink SodaStream soda because I can adjust the amount of flavor added. I do not like regular soda because it seems thick and heavy. My preference is diet soda. That being said, there seem to be many more neurological problems through the decades as more and more chemical additives have been added to our food. I eat butter, not margarine (tub of chemicals in my opinion). I do eat other processed foods, but I check the ingredients and go for the lesser of the evil. My opinion is that our bodies are not made to digest chemicals.1

By "no bashing," do you mean no disagreement? This is the debate thread. Disagreement =/= bashing.
That said, do you have any data to support this claim:there seem to be many more neurological problems through the decades as more and more chemical additives have been added to our food.
or is it just your personal observation?5 -

This is not true.4 -

This is not true.
What, that our bodies are not meant to digest chemicals?

Everything has chemicals in it. Science 101.3 -

Your opinion is incorrect.5 -

I would argue that the purpose of your digestion is precisely to break down complex chemical compounds into their more simple chemical components so that they can be utilised by your body for nutrition and energy.
Do agree with eating butter not margarine though - tastes so much better.

I'm always a little surprised that so many people have such a black and white spectrum of things and miss out on this whole gray/nuanced area which is where most truth's are found.
Good point that this is not a black and white subject.

I don't know enough about the different kind of sweeteners but I just came here to say that SPLENDA IS ATROCIOUS AND IT WILL RUIN YOUR COFFEE.
Peoples' taste buds are different. Splenda doesn't bother me, neither does stevia. I can't stand cumin or cilantro, some people love them.1 -

The only draw back is it is a little pricey but do your shopping on amazon or ebay and you will get a good price.
Xylitol affects my GI tract, erythritol doesn't appear to bother me at all. Other sugar alcohols are even worse, 2-3 pieces of certain sugar-free candies and I'm running to the bathroom.1 -

Sugar alcohols do that to me too to the point I have to avoid them altogether2 -

I'm the exact opposite. I'm fine with xylitol, but erythritol and I don't get along well at all.1
