Why did you come to the conclusion to lose weight?

When I had to have my wedding band cut off of my finger. That was my "wow I need to lose weight" moment that worked.4

I see all the older ppl around me hvng health problems. I don't want to end up like that3

My husband and I are wanting to start a family here soon and before I get pregnant I want to be in good shape so I have no complications. I look at all these fit girls who are happy, and comfertable with their body and health. I want to have that mind set again. I want to look in the mirror and feel confident in a pair of jeans when I leave the house, I'm tired of stretchy pants and t shirts all the time because my clothes don't fit. I want to be fit and healthy and happy.3

I have already been on MFP and have lost almost 20 lbs since the end of July 2016. My husband had to have surgery last week, and I spent the day around the hospital and the waiting rooms and the recovery area. I saw sooooooo many women, some my age (44) and some much older, trying to cope with their health problems. I understand that I cannot diagnose or comprehend all of their illnesses and injuries based on my quick observations, but it seemed that the ones who were overweight/obese/morbidly obese were having a lot more problems getting around and recovering than those who were normal weight or slightly overweight. Yes, perhaps they had underlying conditions that caused their weight gain. But there is no doubt that a person who just had back or knee surgery will recover faster if they are in a normal weight range. I saw so many people who were alone and scared and facing a long recovery at home, and they could barely get around on their own.
The whole experience terrified me and convinced me that I HAVE to lose weight now, while I am still somewhat young and without the bad knees, back, hips, ankles, etc. that I will probably get if I don't get my stuff together and continue with the weight loss and exercise I have started. I really do not want to be one of the people I saw in the hospital.5 -
Went to an amusement park and had extreme difficulty getting the restraint secured for the ride I was getting on. Weighed later on when I got home and was the highest I'd ever been, surpassing my previous high by at least 15lbs. I am now down 25lbs and exercising regularly, and feeling a lot better lately.3

I was in an extremely abusive relationship with my partner from high school. Depression and stress from how he treated me caused me to put on about 70 pounds while we were together. After our breakup, I ended up needing ankle surgery and was in a wheelchair for 5 months. I put on a total (between the relationship weight and surgery weight) of about 100 pounds. At my lightest, I was 150 -- I am currently 257. (SW: 262). I have been unable to find a job for many months, despite constant searching. The job market in my town is just insanely dead. I kind of fell into a bit of a depression because of how useless I felt. Can't work, just sat around all day being miserable. My life lacked purpose and drive and I ended up making a looooong pity me post in r/loseit on Reddit about how fat I was and how I didn't know how to change it and I needed help so badly.
They were, in short, extremely rude. They called it "tough love", but it hurt. Badly. I felt disgusting. Either way, I ended up reading their sidebar, and it recommended this site. I came here, thinking I'd just give it a shot and fell in love with the process and the community.7 -
I was planning a wedding and REFUSED to be a fat bride. It had more to do with picking the dress. I knew I would not be able to get the dress I wanted if I did not lose weight and my mom wanted to come with me and she always gave me anxiety when it came to picking out cloths.
Fast forward 4 years and I never got married. We broke up and all the progress I made was lost ( I gained back 45 pounds) due to depression and a chaotic life. I realized last year that it was time I got back on the wagon and am looking for new inspiration. I gave myself a new goal to not be a fat college graduate. To enter my new life healthy and fit. I plan on running a half marathon on April so hopefully I can find that super fit girl who lost all that weight so long ago and we can cross the finish line together.4 -
I have two answers.
1st. I grew overweight and I always dreamt of being fit and wanted to have girls think I was attractive versus a gross fat blob.
2nd. After giving up and accepting the "fact" that I was born to be fat since I could never maintain my weight loss and my entire family was obese, I found myself determined after the birth of my first son. I realized when he was just over a year old that there was a strong chance due to my genetics that he would struggle with his weight just like me. The idea of him going through what I did was heartbreaking. I decided that I had to figure this out so that I could show him that we can overcome our genetic predetermination.8 -
Not being able to run or hike with my friends because I'm the first to stop and run outta breath. Plus I wanted to look better for my bf1

My partner got me a beautiful ring... That I was only able to wear for a few months before it became noticeable too small. I'm determined to fit into that again1

A few weeks ago several things happened. I went to the doctors for a check up and they weighed me and I could see on the computer screen that horrible BMI number of mine 0.3 away from being obese.
The doctor told me I needed to swap out my snacks for healthy snacks and I though 'I don't even have snacks!'
My housemate commented on how much toast I was having for breakfast.
I had to send back a lot of clothes I'd ordered because I was bigger than I thought I was.
I started panicking about what I'd look like on my wedding day. I don't like having photos taken of me as it is, and thinking I'm too big to have this whole day (partly) all about me gives me fat fear.
Three weeks in and I haven't eaten any bread and I've lost nearly 3kg. I have smaller meals and healthy snacks in between time. I have gone from 2 sugars and milk to black coffee. I'm best friends with my scales. It's bloody hard work feeling hungry all the time and not being a piggy after a long day.
TLDR: doctor, clothes too small, wedding.2 -
To be happy with myself, healthier, do not get cancer or any other illness....1

my sugar spiked really high and i ended up in the hospital, my weight was the highest it's ever been, it was a terrible feeling so I knew I had to make a change. I also wanna look like a god.3

I'm 40 something today. I'm in pretty good shape for my age. I want to stay healthy and be here as long as possible. Won't hurt to cut a few pounds, but MFP helps me manage my weight too. Good tool.1

I have done this in two stages... the first Wake Up moment was when I was getting ready to turn 40. I had been fat all my life - and only had gotten fatter.... topped out at 367. I sat up in bed one day, and winced as the pain of putting my feet on the ground hit me. I was only 40... and the women in my family live into their 80's and beyond. I didn't want another 40 plus years of agony... so, I did what I needed to do to lose about a hundred pounds. For me, that included a Lap Band - but, there was the usual diet and exercise component, there, also. I felt so much better, and some life stresses occurred, that I stopped hitting the gym, stopped eating my low carb diet - basically went back to my couch potato ways. Fortunately, I couldn't go ALL the way back -I was simply unable to inhale food the way I had before and I only gained back 15 lbs. Coasted at 275 for a long time.
Fast forward ten years... Knees are starting to ache again, cause old age sucks... But, my Aha moment wasn't because of that, this time. My hubby broke his ankle, had surgery, and did recovery in a wheelchair... I got to push him around, haul the chair in and out of the truck, do ALL the household stuff myself, etc. When I did my annual physical for work - I discovered I had lost 15 lbs - by accident - just from moving around a little more. Seemed pretty crazy not to keep that up... so, here I am... back down to a size I haven't seen since the early days of my marriage, and pushing for lower.8 -
My story is a tad bit boring but my weight is going up and up and I was just not happy with my self so I started this weight loss journey1
-
This is probably going to start with WAY TMI..
Last December, I got my TOM, and it was all out of whack. Lasted like six weeks and was crazy heavy. I felt awful, and knew that I needed a change. I weighed myself after a long period of ignoring the scale, and found myself at the heaviest I had ever been, 277 (at 5'1"). I had always been fat, and knew I needed to figure it out. I have two kiddos that depend on me!
At the beginning of March, I started logging consistently. I've taken a day off, here and there, just for my own sanity. At this point (7.5 months later), I'm down 72 pounds, and feeling the best that I have in my adult life! I'm hoping to reach Onederland in the next couple of weeks!9 -
I wasn't heavy my whole life, actually quite the opposite. I was playing soccer in Sweden by the time I was 17 and went on to play 2 years in college. After 4 knee surgeries (blew out my ACL, MCL and Meniscus) and a 7 year marriage ending in divorce I was 27 and depressed and didn't know how to be healthy if I wasn't playing sports. I had gained so much weight I don't know how I didn't realize it.
I started life over going into my 30's by going back to school and had gone from 325 down to about 240! Life was on track, then I found myself in a very emotionally abusive relationship and I had forgotten how to take care of myself so I gained it all back. Now here I am 1 year free of that relationship and ready to take back my life.
This time around my wake up call was a Dr visit to the ENT to discuss removing my GIANT tonsils that I've struggled with my whole life. He took a look and said they absolutley needed to come out however the anesthesiologist will have an issue putting me under at this weight because my BMI is so high. So in order for me to get this much needed surgery I have to lose weight and bring down that BMI.
So I signed up for personal training at the gym and am tracking my food....today is day 3 and I will get the hang of it LOL6 -
I don`t remember having an aha moment when I decided to lose weight. I just realized one day that I didn`t have to be fat anymore. It`s pretty boring when said that way, haha.
I joined MFP in 2012, logged every single thing I ate and lost 70 pounds in about 7/8 months. I maintained that for about two years even though I never quite reached my goal, and now I`m back and ready to lose the last 20 pounds of the baby weight gained from back to back pregnancies, and maybe a little more.1 -
my daughter started to crawl and I had to take breaks and catch my breathe. That was my you need to loose weight moment0

Wow, this is a little emotional. I have never written this down.
Well, I got hurt and wasn't super mobile for years. In March, I decided to stop taking the pain medication I had been taking for ten years. The hardest thing I have ever done. Then on June 24th I stopped smoking. So through the process of getting all of those chemicals out of my body, I gained weight, a lot of weight. It was to the point that I didn't want to be seen in public (I still don't) and I don't want my friends to see me, however it was starting to affect my fourteen year old daughter. I used to be so active, always doing something. Now, not so much. Hopefully, I am not too late. Now, I spin (in my home) sixty minutes every morning and I meal prep. My problem wasn't what I eat, is was the portions. Now, when I cook a big dinner I portion control meal prep the leftovers for the week. I am just starting out, Saturday was my first day. No slip ups or slacking yet. I am afraid to fail, so I shall persevere.7 -
I saw a picture from an event I attended... and it wasn't pretty. Until then I knew I needed to lose weight but was telling myself I looked fine for 185lbs, and that it didn't show that much I had put on all that weight. Uhmmm, NOT! Lol0

Back in 2010 I started to notice that I had stretch marks and even through I went to my college summer ball and I hated it because I thought everybody was looking at me and yet it still took me four years before I took any action and that was because I was feeling sick and tired of being the quite overweight girl who would sit down all the time and stuff my face.1
-
I went in for a physical this past summer and my doctor told me I'm officially overweight. I've always been a pretty slender guy, so hearing that was a bit of a rude awakening. Ah, the joys of forty-something life....0

@CafeRacer808 Don't worry, I am now in the obese category... Just a few pounds from overweight but still!! Like you said... Rude awakening!!1 -
I found a stretch mark on my thigh, my jackets felt tighter, I could no longer fit into my size 9 shorts, I looked really big in pictures. I had that realization about a year ago. 30 pounds down and I feel so much happier, prettier, and more confident!2

Cheers to healthier happy lives in 2017!!4

I was always one that was super small. Then I was put on medication which helped one part of me but then I would slowly gain weight from it. I always worked out but never ate right either. I would get on the scale occasionally and see "oh another five pounds added." But didn't physically see it until i compared pictures and here I am trying to lose 25 pounds after already losing ten.2
