First step is always recognising you need to take that step so good for you. Second is actually taking the step.
Slim fast would not be my choice, but if it helps you then fair enough.
Understand though, you don't need to go to the gym. If you want to lose weight or be healthy then just walk walking is vastly under rated and if you do it a little faster sometimes it works wonders.
Anyway, my concern with slim fast is that you will end up hungry and then eat on top of it.
Weight loss always starts with nutrition and I'd always tell people just to eat fresh meat/fish with veggies. You really can't go wrong with that twice a day and then Oats/eggs or something at breakfast.7 -
That sounds really sad. Will your arthritis cut you off from preparing and eating food for the rest of your life?3

I'm kinda old and arthritic plus lazy but I do have a microwave. Many of my meals consist of frozen dinners and steam-in-bag veggies. Lots of variety and sustainable over the long term. You might give that a try rather than SlimFast or when you get tired of SlimFast.7 -
Losing weight is hard enough. You plan on making it harder by inviting random strangers to take pot shots at your plan?
I won't. My goal was so daunting I took all the positive help I could get and froze out any possible naysayers.
I have a few ideas though to hopefully help you through your plan.
- Since preparation and clean up are a pain, why not also invest in those single serving microwave meals?
- The slimfast shake by itself might not sustain you through to your next meal so you might try adding a hard boiled egg. You may prepare a dozen at a time. Eggs are by definition a pre-packaged meal, with great protein numbers.
- Could you save up to get yourself a dishwasher?

All Slimfast did was make me hungry. I did the powdered shakes twice a day. If it works for you, best of luck.4

I lost my first 30 pounds sedentary and eating a meal alternative called Soylent.
Like you I didn't want to think about what my next meal was going to be - Soylent made it easy to get complete nutrition and count calories.
As long as you have more calories going out than in you will loose some weight.
Congrats on making the choice to loose a few pounds!2 -
I did it. Lost weight. Gained it all right back when I stopped...and then some. Plus, it really messed with my stomach.
After consulting with a dietician in June 2016, I learned how to make healthy food choices that would fuel my body and help me lose weight. I began walking 10k steps a day. It hurt for a long time at first, but braces and good shoes helped a lot. I have dropped over 40 lbs since June, and I am now doing weight training at the gym.
Slim fast is a quick fix and won't help you learn how to properly eat and maintain your diet so that you won't put the weight back on.6 -
Soylent is People arhhhhh people15

Thank you all so much for your replies, they are greatly appreciated.
I have recently been eating calorie counted ready meals, usually microwaved, for dinner. I thought I'd have the SF shakes for breakfast and lunch and a SF snack or fruit if needed.
As I've got older I tend to prefer snacking rather than a proper meal. I have just had a SF ready made shake from my starter pack and enjoyed it. The only thing I don't like is the aftertaste of the sweeteners, I will have an orange later.
Again, my thanks to all.2 -
You'll have to drink the shakes forever, but if this sounds like it will fit into your lifestyle go for it! Used before and lost 12lbs, crept back when I stopped using it.2

I have tried slim fast and personally didn't like the taste and felt like I was hungry within an hour of drinking it. I ended up using GNC Total Lean 25 shakes and really liked them and felt satisfied on them. I used them to lose the bulk of my weight. I have went back to eating regular food because I didn't want to spend the money on meal replacement shakes any longer. Also just so you know I haven't gained any of the weight back. Do whatever works for you. I personally needed the structure of a meal replacement plan in the beginning. It helped me get back on track. Plus it is convenient as you mentioned. Good luck!2

Understanding what will work for you is important. It wouldn't work for me (and I think there are better options for premade meals, as well as homemade shakes if you like shakes), but if you have thought it through and are convinced that's what's right for you, good for you! And welcome.
Log it and see if you are hitting calories and macros without problem and if you feel satisfied. If not, might want to consider modifying. But just getting started is important too.1 -

This^
They were never filling for me. Besides, I learned nothing and gained all the weight back. There are meal replacement shakes that are of better quality.....look for more protein and less sugar. SlimFast uses so much sugar because it's cheap filler.
Tweaking your current diet can help you learn new habits. Even freezer meals & frozen veggies would be an improvement. At least you get to chew food.0 -
Why would the op need to eat this forever? I mean they could albeit it might not be ideal. If it keeps the op satiated, they receive all the micro and macro nutrients, and gets a clean bill of health from their doctor, why hate?
If it's doable for the op, even if it's not doable for you - it's not a bad plan. A bad plan would be to sit down with a bag of chips and not think about health at all. Are their "better" ways to get and remain healthy, I'm sure their is plenty of debate especially from the whole food crowd. However if it helps the op, then it was the right path to help support the ops goals.

You must be seeing different posts than I am, I'm not seeing any "hate". I see people talking about sustainability and alternative options as well as their own experiences... I think since OP came back and clarified a few things (age and activity level primarily) it is helpful. We see a lot of people who come to this site looking for quick fixes and slim fast is one of those that advertises that, but for OPs situation it very well could be a good solution... although I don't know that it needs to be Slimfast
OP, are you trying to lose weight? I know when my elderly mother was tired of cooking and had a hard time cognitively with completing many tasks we switched her to Ensure to make sure she was getting adequate nutrition for her age, I think they have a calcium supplemented version good for older women.
Also this may be TMI but when I went through a slim fast phase during college, I noticed a change in odor when I went to the bathroom. It was.... off putting, much in the same way some people don't want to eat asparagus because of later reminders...6 -
I don't follow the slimfast program at all, however I can speak to their pre-mixed shakes and that they help me greatly to control hunger and be an easy option for me once a day (sometimes twice if I get close to bed time and haven't hit my calorie goal yet)
Good for you and taking the first step to help yourself no matter what route you take!!2 -
I personally would not do a slimfast diet, but I think their shakes in the can tastes great!2
