Kim - So sorry about your family situation. It's awful when you feel powerless to help people who will not help themselves. I suppose if a crime is being committed then it doesn't matter who reports it, but I assume it's more complicated than that. (((HUGS))) for you.
DJ - A beautiful, sophisticated woman.
Well, my SV news is that I did not put on any weight over the holidays. :drinker: Sooooooo happy! And I kept off the pound I lost the week before. Now I want to lose one more pound before we go on holiday in two weeks.
I have to disagree with Barbie, (and she knows I do ), in that I entertain myself enormously with food. I don't eat mindlessly and I make excellent choices, but eating and entertaining others is one of life's great pleasures and a wonderful way of getting together and sharing. They are some of my happiest moments. That is totally different to mindless snacking, or stuffing yourself with junk, which is a form of self punishment and self abuse.
Last night there was a programme on TV which was testing out various "diets". I don't even approve of the word! One they called "The French Woman's Diet", which is closest to the way I eat. The participant lost 7 lbs in 6 weeks.
Tonight I'm making the Easy Crustless Spinach and Feta Pie from skinnytaste.com. For the newbies on here, the website has some excellent recipes for lower calorie meals. Several of us cook that pie, which is really a savoury cake. I have double portion for dinner and a single portion for lunch the following day. I will have it with green beans and cherry tomatoes and, of course, chilli sauce! DH likes mango chutney. Yuk!
Allie - We are all in your corner and cheering you on. Keep going! It will get hard from time to time as you know from before and there will be tears and despair, but it will be more than worth it in the long term to get rid of a +×÷# who is not worthy of you.
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -

For those of you that are doing the lose 40 pounds by May 27 challenge with me there was nothing new on the challenge thread except for how to navigate the different threads on the site. I will update daily. As for me I am challenging myself to get up and move more! So, if you would like to join me in that, set your alarm to get up and move 10 minutes every hour.

Good morning everyone.
Yesterday went well. Grandkids were fun. There is no random snacking allowed when they are here or I hear about it when they get home and don't eat their supper.
Today, up way to early. I agree - sleep plays a very important part in weight-loss. In my defense, I went to bed early so of course I am up early. It is "my" time before DH gets up.
Darn...it is snowing , this is going to make my outdoor walk a little tough. I am going to weigh my boots Today! They are my boots from work so steel toed safety boots, but they are comfortable for walking in the winter.
Today
- more purge and shred, burn, recycle, donate.
- walk and Leslie Sansone DVD
- water, water, Water.
DJ - LOVE your hair. We could be twins.,! Mine also started to turn gray really early.

Yvonne & others who might not love fresh veggies I think it is Michele who prefers her veggies, at least broccoli, lightly steamed. I used to parboil and then marinate veggies in Italian dressing which is delicious. I just eat 'em raw now. Also, I thought that picture of richmondlady's cabbage soup looked pretty darn good...lots of ways to get veggies in. This morning I had half my day's lb of veggies in a green smoothie, which was very tasty, surprisingly. I had never had a green smoothie before. Can't believe how easy it was to get half a lb of fresh vegetables on board! The other half will be later today after my workout. Maybe it's psychological, but I feel better & more balanced and less tempted since starting this veggie commitment. Thank again to Penny, my role model in this endeavour.
Sue I know your critters appreciated that hot water. I can just see the steam rising up around your horses and barn cat as they lapped it up.
Joyce Yay for good blood pressure and less dependent edema! That is wonderful!
DJ You are gorgeous. Love the hair.
Becca Yay! you for donating blood! It's a wonderful gift. The blood bank is constantly calling me; I have to get back in there and donate again soon. You have inspired me to quit ignoring the messages and make an appt.
NYKAREN & Rita I am not a pack rat but I do have a problem recognizing that I can let go of a LOT of stuff and not miss it at all. My mantra is "Keep the best of the best, and let go of the rest". I have to keep that in my mind ALL THE TIME when I am going through stuff. I empathize with you AND your husbands, as I have this internal struggle which says, "This could be useful." vs "I haven't used/worn this for 2 years." "There is nothing wrong with this." vs "This item is taking up room in my closet/garage/house and I don't use it." or "I could repurpose this." And worst of all, "This was my mom's and she loved it, but I don't so much."
AAAARRRGGHHHH!!!! "Keep the best of the best and let go of the rest!"
Jana in Virginia Happy Birthday!
Kim I hear pain and frustration in your latest post. My mom used to say to "do what you can to get the outcome you want and then let go of the outcome". My observation of you vis a vis your posts this last year is that you are no stranger to hard work and always endeavour to do what you can to get the outcomes you desire. You are the poster child for strength of character and good attitude. You work your butt off and you aren't afraid of a challenge. You think outside the box. If I were going to choose a 2017 resolution for you, it would be to stay true to yourself, because you are a terrific person and a terrific role model. The family situation you are alluding to would try anyone, even someone as resilient as you are, and I am so sorry you have that worry. Let us help bolster you to forge ahead despite financial and family stressors. We love you.
Tracie & Carol Part of my Mindfulness for 2017 is to limit screen time. So far doing better, but nowhere near what my goal is...2 hours or less per day, including computer, TV, and phone. Wish me luck! I spend at least 30 minutes a day on here with you gals, and I have a couple of favorite TV programs plus the news, so this is definitely going to challenge me. It will be good for me.
Marnie in Alaska We have the same word for 2017! Mindfulness! I love it!
Several of the ladies on this thread have had success with intermittent fasting. Mary does a daily fast where she limits her eating to a few hours in the later part of the day, I believe.
Toni in TN Great FOCUS goals!
Sharon in Alberta Having lost 2 nuclear family members to suicide, my heart goes out to you and your son's family over your loss of Steven. (((Hugs)))
Lillian "- more purge and shred, burn, recycle, donate" ... I love this...
RE We haven't forgotten you, girlie, we know you are still out there...

Hi ladies! I am feeling self-congratulatory as I have lost 2 lbs in spite of the holidays! At the same time I am suspicious that these are the same 2 lbs I have lost and regained for the past 3 years... however, staying with MFP should help. Now that I have better Internet and a better phone, it will be easier. Having just completed 2 year project also frees up some attention.
I live in West Africa, and losing weight on purpose is a rather new concept. In fact, I am a lot slimmer than most women my age. But, I know I need to slim down to look and feel healthy. I am also very busy, but who isn't? No more excuses!8 -
Good morning ladies. Kinda down today. Rainy weather, not sleeping well, too much on my mind.
Rita from CT0 -
Good morning! Happy Wednesday! I got up at 5:00 this morning! (Yea!) I got my walk taken care of first and Brrrrrrr! That winter storm that you have been getting, Mary, has made it's way across the lake and is now in West Michigan! Coldest ,and consequently, the fastest walk I have taken so far this winter! I came back and did my pick 5 exercises and then did the challenge test: pushups-27, sit ups- 36, jax-57. I was surprised (pleasantly) with those numbers, as that is about where I was last year at this time.
DJ- Gorgeous, gorgeous YOU! I went a few months between coloring (from June to December) just to see how my gray was coming in. I was not impressed and will continue to color until I get enough gray coming in to begin coloring a nice silvery white!
LOL! I just looked out my kitchen window and the "train" just went by! The "train" is a man who runs in the early mornings while it is dark. He has two rows of lights on the front of his vest, I am used to seeing him when I am out walking in early mornings. He is running late today! Choo-Choo!
I also began the "pound a day" of veg. I don't think this will be a problem for me, as I already incorporate a lot of "free" veg with my meals. But it is nice to portion it out in a one pound bag and see it there, all ready for me. I bagged a few bags for the rest of this week, labeled them and showed them to my hubby telling him "Please don't eat these." He actually laughed and asked me if I was kidding! LOL Guess I don't have to worry.
Welcome to all of the new ladies! I love hearing about where you are all from and the challenges you are facing, obstacles you have overcome, etc. I have been on MFP for a few years (four or five), but I just found this thread a year ago this month. I just turned 50 in November, but went through menopause early, which is what made me seek out this group. I am at a different "stage" than many of my friends of my age, right now, and these ladies have helped me handle and get a handle on some things. I have three children. Sons ages 30 and 23, and a newly-married daughter, 27, who is expecting our first grandson in March. His due date is 3-14; so you will see him referred to as "pi-baby". DH and I have been married for 28 years. I am a childcare provider (22 years) and have between 6-8 children under 4 in my home each day (M-F). I work from 6:30am-6:30pm, which is why I need to be up by 5:00am to fit in the exercise. If I wait until evening, it most likely, won't get done. I am 5'8 and currently weigh 237. I was that very thin tall girl for most of my life. Before I was a childcare provider, I worked in restaurants and was moving constantly, so the weight stayed off without any extra exercise and I pretty much ate whatever I wanted with no visible consequences. Then...depression in 1993, after the loss of both of my parents. I was also pregnant with my youngest that year, so the baby weight never left. Then began menopause a couple of years later; and the weight/depression continued. I think my epiphany moment really came when my youngest graduated high school and continued on to college which left me with only me to focus on. So here I am. And you'd think, with the house emptying of children (my own) that I would have more time to focus on myself, but add aging in-laws, a sister with a brain tumor, and a hubby with an RA diagnosis and I find I am still trying to carve out time for me. BUT...that is the very cool and wonderful thing about this site. As you read, you realize that healthy choices aren't easy and aren't only about food! You also realize that you aren't the only juggler in this circus we call life! We are all here, balls in the air, juggling together; and maybe hoping some one keep their balls in the air! Love, love, love this group of ladies!
AAAAaaaaand....I have babbled my way through my allotted time. So, WELCOME! xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)5 -
Wow! This is a lot to keep up with! I thoroughly enjoy reading all the posts and they are truly inspiring. I'm glad I joined this group!
Barbie - I love to listen to audio books as well. I enjoy almost all genres. If you have any suggestions, please share!
Marcelynh - I hear ya about the grandkids. I have two, boy and girl, who both get off the bus at my house. I help them with homework, feed them dinner and play games every night. They are at my house for about two hours. It gets to be exhausting, but it sure beats sending them to daycare!
Lizh9 - What is "stepbet"? I'd like to hear more about that.
lacruiser2016 - I share a lot of the same qualities that you posted!! Although, not the one about being retired. Boo. That is my goal, but I have 6 years to go. However, I taught cardio kickboxing and step for 15 years and was a gym rat like you. I had to give it up when my grandkids started getting off the bus at my house. Since then I've lost all motivation ... because like you ... it's all or none. I diet the same exact way ... all in or not at all.
Mary - I never did see the challenge, but just felt like I wanted to be a part of it! Yeah, not very smart of me. I'll PM you about the details to see if it's for me.
Oconnell4383 - Great job on the weight loss!!
Like everyone else, LOVE the FOCUS!! Nice job Toni!
I'll try to keep up with everyone on here, but that sounds like a challenge as well!!2 -
Morning ladies!
Off to the Endocrinologist for a consult on my parathyroid test results. Separate issue is my left ear is all stuffy feeling/sounding. May have to run over to doc to get that checked. If we had an otoscope I'd have the hubs take a look. No pain just discomfort. Always something.
Welcome to all the new peeps joining us on this fabulous and supportive board.
Till later....

I think there is a way to get rid of emails from MFP....go to your home page, click on "Settings", click on "email preferences" and then uncheck all the boxes so you don't get e mails.
Kim, having family members that continue destructive behaviour is a huge challenge....learning to detach from it is the only solution I've heard of that works.
Marni, thanks for the great photos of your weather and your darling dogs..yes, men can lose weight much faster than women..one of the cardinal rules of weight loss is never compare yourself to a man,..that's one of the great things about this thread--women sharing with women of a similar age.
Allie, you are not a failure..you hit a bump in the road and have found the tools to survive...if you want to give yourself a label, try "survivor" or "improver" or "winner"

Good Morning! This is a busy thread, how exciting. I scanned through and appreciate the support and look forward to getting to know many of you.
Lenora- Oprah.... I get it.
recipe is WW & adding my own...I did use it as a guide. The great thing with this soup for me, is my sugar cravings dissipate. I love the soup for a detox start. I love Amylu sausages -Gouda & apple cranberry my favorites- (I order online) and will add 1 for protein to my bowl.
I did Personal Trainer Foods for a few months when I found one of my favorite proteins in my Fresh Market one week. It works, if one sticks with it. So now I do my own & save $$. Amylu sausages and Kroger 10/4/$10 vegetables. It is so simple to pop a pre-cooked tasty protein and a frozen vegetable in the microwave those times I haven't cooked. Whole unprocessed food.
down 1.8 lbs. Started using MFP photo part to record the life change.
downloaded a new-to-me-FREE iPhone app -"Three Gratitudes" developed by college students a few years ago convinced that positive self talk makes a difference. it has a calendar archive which should help me in those weaker moments.
Haven't been using my fitbit since I discover the iPhone's "Health" app. It's been working behind the scenes all this time and I never knew!
Took supper & enjoyed soup, cornbread and ice cream (I declined as I said -yep) w/ a friend whose mother/best friend peacefully passed over the holidays. It was a lovely evening.
My mindful moment:
3 Gratitudes:
durable body
joy of my pups
health sustaining me
my name is Carol, but I'll continue with the RLady since I see another Carol
Have a great day all.

Lillian- it will be nice to be moving or exercising with you every hour on the hour! I am going to focus on finishing our bathroom remodel. Moving more and sitting less will burn a lot more calories! If you do that for six hours you will have one hour of steps or work accomplished!

Good morning from NW Washington...Brr it is cold but beautiful this morning. Have walked daily the past six mornings. I'm fixing my bag of veggies each day and munching throughout the day. It helps me from grabbing the "other" stuff and totally keeps the hunger at bay. What a great hint. I weigh only on Fridays but am thinking maybe it makes sense to weigh daily and chart progress. Any ideas on this? Good luck everyone and thanks again for sharing.

My workout of choice at the moment is walking on the treadmill at least 30 mins most days of the week till the weather warms. I want to incorporate strength training at some point. I to love to garden and work out in the yard! My latest endeavor that I have just began is...refinishing old hand me down.. furniture pieces with chalk paint. I love the fresh- aged look! Maybe thats my new manta : "Working towards that fresh aged- look! " .. LOL!
I am happy to be here! I am inspired by all your *amazing successes! I look forward to the many future successes in 2017 with you all!

Wow! I have been reading off and on all morning and finally got to the end.
Kim ~ I am so sorry you are having to deal with family issues and money issues. I know that you left the corporate world but wonder if you dipped you toes back in if a steady income might make you feel better.
Allie ~ You are to be commended for taking all this calmly. Hugs.
Thanks to all of you who have uploaded pics. Love seeing all of them. I can't remember who did the winter scenes but they are lovely. DJ, you are a very good looking lady.

Good Morning from New Bern NC! It was a lovely 71 degrees yesterday and hanging at 56 this morning. Beats my old state of NJ. Went to my water aerobics class this morning after being off 2 weeks for the holidays. It felt great and gives me more energy throughout the day. Boy I missed it!2

Spent yesterday walking the zoo with my daughter and a couple of grandkids. It was a fun day. Quite warm, almost 80 degrees. Makes the 40 degrees I woke up to quite cold! I took along my camera for fun. This giraffe had attitude....

Carey-N Alberta: You have definitely got colder temperatures than we do. It is 17 Fahrenheit here right now. BRRRR!
Lenore & Becca: I buy Endangered Species Dark Chocolate in individually wrapped squares that are 50 calories each. I started buying them at a local Fred Meyer store but they quit carrying the individually wrapped pieces so I buy it from Amazon now. Individually wrapped pieces keep me from eating too much. I can eat just one.
Sharon from Lethbridge, Alberta: Welcome back!!!!! :flowerforyou:
Klanders & Kim: The last time we baked apple pie we made two versions. One was using a regular pie plate with crust on the bottom and the top & filling in the middle. The other way was to put filling in custard cups and top with crust. The pie and custard cup mini pies all went into the freezer to be taken out as needed. I like the custard cup minis best because I can eat just one and not go on to eat several helpings. With the whole pie, once we defrosted it, DH & I were both eating pie frequently and big portions at that because we didn't want to "waste any." Not so good. :noway:
I have yoga this morning and DH has a doctor appointment this afternoon. He's been having blood pressure problems and he is planning to do some work calibrating his home blood pressure device.

2017 Resolution: Sneak-in a short youtube cardio workout or yoga routine when the office empties at 4:00 pm.
2017 Goals: Weigh less (or maintain current weight) at the end of each month.

Belle - Congratulations on making a commitment to yourself! I'd love to see some of your furniture projects. There's a store here that rehabs old pieces with chalk paint, and they are just beautiful.
Joyce - Woo, 124/76! Those are good numbers! Glad you're seeing progress.
lklinkman - I'm with you on the knee rehab. At first glance I thought you said your daily exercises made you SWEAR! My personal habit is to weigh weekly, first thing in the morning when my weight is lowest. That keeps me accountable without worrying about normal daily fluctuations.
DJ - Your hair is gorgeous. My mom's hair went grey early and was totally white. She told me she never got as many compliments on it when she colored it as she did after she just let it go natural.
Lenora - I did the calculations for the pecan butter, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared it would be. No worse than peanut butter, and its flavor is intense so a little goes a long way. I put maybe a teaspoon on a slice of cranberry-orange bread last night, and it was SO good! The recipe is here: http://cookieandkate.com/2012/pecan-butter-recipe/
Karebear - You will find a lot of inspiration and support here.
Barbara - Welcome back! Seems like some people lose weight when they're stressed and some gain it. I'm one who gains it. Glad you are taking care of yourself.
grandmallie - Attagirl! Under the circumstances, who knows what he's been up to. You are absolutely right to protect yourself.
lacruiser2016 - I envy your life on the beach!
KetoneKaren - Before we moved I belonged to a gym and their cafe had an amazing green smoothie. When I had to drop my membership I went searching for a recipe and found several nice ones online. I'm good with some raw veggies but the smoothie was a great way to get in some greens, whose leaves aren't that much fun for snacking on.
Got on the ski machine last night for the first time since my accident. I managed 20 minutes before the knee started to complain, then hopped over to the stationary bike to finish.
I'm looking at my pound of veggies for the day - it's not as much as it sounds like. I've got raw carrots, zucchini, snap peas, cucumber, grape tomatoes, and bell pepper, along with a few roasted brussels sprouts left over from Christmas dinner. They're sitting right here next to my desk so I can snack throughout the day. But it's going to be a pain to log them... we need a "pound of veggies" database item!

(((KIm))) I found the book the Dance of Anger helpful to me in dealing with the emotional side to the difficulties in my own family. That was one of my goals last year was to write about the chapters as I read them here on this site. Are all the issues resolved? No Many of them are on going. It just helped me get another perspective and ideas to handle my own anger. Thinking about this is timely for me because of my knee pain my tolerance is down and I find myself more reactive.
It was in April of 2016 I wrote these reflections. I went back and looked at a couple of my entries. Timely for me.
Goal is to go back and reread my reflections from Dance with Anger
Family issues can be hard especially around the Holidays.
Heather love your attitude of eating is to Live For. I will sometimes find myself when having the opportunity to eat something particularly delicious rather than say this is to die for I'll say this is to live for. I agree with you your body needs the right kind of foods to work at its best. Sharing good healthy foods with family and friends is a bonus Thank you for sharing all your wonderful cooking ideas.
Mary when I clicked on the social at the bottom of the challenge sites I could only find the red group, so I decided to try and start a blue group, but did not know how to link it to the challenge. I did find the exercise site. Until my knee heals I am going with stretches and exercises for other parts of my body.

Hi Gals,
Its cold and rainy in the SF bay area today (yesterday too!) the cold is in the 40-50 for a day time high, not cold for some of you, but for us it is.
I got new rain gear for Christmas, and am loving walking in it with Levi (DD = darling dog) my pervious rain gear was a men’s 2x and this is a men’s large Happy Dance! – I like to wear a layer or 2 under it, and find the men’s style is a boxy-er fit and accommodates layers better.
While I am out walking I tell Levi my gratitudes for the day… so thought I’d share them here…
I am grateful for – indoor plumbing (when I am in the camp garden I have an outhouse), the transportation system that delivers all manner of things to my town, my health, my mfp friends, my in area friends, my parents, my dna, my resilience, Levi, my chiropractor that lets me pay with vegies and fruit from the garden, the government programs that have allowed me to re-finance my house and have health insurance, that I do not live in a war torn area of the world, for the birds and wildlife in my area that provide bird song and entertainment, being raised by a mom who was raised in the great depression and taught me thrift, my business, my computer skills, good hair, … there are other things that I add depending on the day, but these are the standard ones….
NYKaren, and Karen in Virg. – Thanks, it helps to know someone else understands.
Heather – the sad thing is that crimes are being committed, but because I am not a witness, and my darling mother when the cops come will tell them that her daughter (yes me!) have drug/mental health issues and am reporting things that did not happen, all to protect her son, as men are of more value than women - what bull*hit!
Margaret – I have read the Dance of Anger many years ago – may need to do it again…
Newbies – welcome!
January Goals:
Write Christmas letter, and have all cards ready to send by Dec1…this was for nov. but still working on it. Jan. still working on this….**** GET THIS DONE*******
Read and report on a book –
Log everyday to the best I can, over if need be.
11,000 + steps everyday –
Work on water consumption –
Lunch with Kyle -

Good morning ladies -
I am glad I only work part time and have the minutes to keep up with all your activities. I hope this flurry of activity continues.
Marni - beautiful pictures! Thank you for telling us about yourself. I like your spunky attitude.
Marcelyn - Ha! The picture of the giraffe definitely needs a caption. If I were the critter, I would be saying, "Girl, a pound of raw veggies a day? No thank you." I make myself eat some raw veggies when I am eating healthy but I doubt I ever will do a pound! I think of them more like medicine.
Katla - I love the proverb you are posting.
Dreamwriter - I remember you! I just came back after more than a year's absence. Good to see you.
Pip - the pup pics always cheer me up!
It was 64 yesterday and today I woke up to 28 degrees. A shock - but yeah. Winter is being winter today! Today is my youngest grandson's 16th birthday. It is also National Spaghetti Day. One year his mom baked him a "spaghetti cake". She piped the frosting to look like strands of spaghetti all over the layer cake. The she added strawberry jam on top to look like the sauce. My DDIL is very creative! They no longer do parties and I feel very left out. I have to run errands later and hope to go by with his bday card and money and a little gift for DDIL whose bday is tomorrow.
Have a great day everyone!

Note to self: adding some of the veggies from my "pound of veggies" bag to my bowl of home made tortilla soup (no tortilla or cheese in/with it) sounded like a good idea...blech! ...won't do that again!3
-
Toni - I eat my raw veggies for my pm snack with 100 gms cottage cheese and HOT mixed pickle! Yummy yum. Today I had a zucchini, radishes, and two raw chestnut mushrooms.
Kim - I personally think the detachment thing is a better option, but if you can't do that with peace of mind there are lots of very reasonably priced spy cameras available these days. I often see tv programmes where people have used them to investigate a nanny or a carer. Some can be monitored from your phone. Just a thought.
Today I had my hair trimmed in town and used lots of vouchers for holiday medicines, deodorant, shampoo etc. Good job. Also did an online order for groceries, coming on Sunday. They had a big half price sale. Mostly boring stuff like teabags and dishwasher tablets, but useful.
This morning I did some more memoir. Now well over 30,000 words. I'm writing about a farm holiday we had in Devon. A HUGE may bug scared the life out of me in an outside toilet at night. Also called a cockchafer. (I bet that's censored)
Lots of good tv tonight for a change.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx
