I find that I have to weigh daily. I know that if I don't I will eat more and gain weight very easily. I also know that your weight will fluctuate. Therefore, when I gain a pound here or there I look at what I eat.
I too weigh myself daily, but I only record my weight loss weekly. I have to know each day how I'm progressing to help keep myself focused. I'm sure there are pros and cons to this, so you have to do what works for you!
I just joined this thread today, but I'm loving it!

fanncy0626 wrote: »Good morning ladies! For those of you that were interested in doing the 40 pounds lost by May 27 challengethis is what we're doing for the month of January.
1. Take the fitness test at the beginning of the month and at the end of the month.
2. Check in daily with a workout of your choosing!mom22kidsaz wrote: »Hi ladies,
Let's get this month started with a monthly challenge. We're going to do a fitness test, and then end the month with the same fitness test. This will measure your physical fitness progress! It's a great way to provide a baseline for your fitness and see the progress you've made.
You will get one point for each day you check in here with a workout (any workout of your choosing - walk, run, dvd, class, etc.).
Here is the fitness test. Please take this test as soon as possible or before January 8 and POST YOUR RESULTS HERE! I will keep them in the spreadsheet and help track your progress. We will repeat the fitness test between 1/28 - 2/7 to see how far we've progressed. Make any modifications you need for the push-ups (on your knees, against the wall); sit ups (or crunches); jumping jacks (standing on one leg and alternating if needed, instead of a full jump. Just notate if you made any modifications and then do the same modifications at the end of the month.
Good luck everyone!

Is this where I check in???? New to this thread, so I'm not sure I am checking in in the right place.
I was able to complete 71 jumping jacks, 22 sit ups and 22 push ups, no modifications. Although with the pushups I had to rest after 12 and then keep resting in between every 2 or 3 push ups. My workout for the night was resistance training for legs ... squats, lunges and box steps. Hopefully, I'll be able to walk tomorrow!

Hello All, My name is Barbara and I am returning after a years absence. I had to quit WW because DH was laid off in December so no need for added expenses. I am also under a lot of family stress with other family members, DH is a diabetic who I have to watch out for and I need an community. I do water aerobics 3 times a week and do the dog park everyday (short walk but better than nothing). This support group looks like it will fit the void...Thanks from NC.

I just finished my most hated chore of all---cleaning the bathrooms---I find every excuse to not do it and finally got to it today--put on my headphones and listened to my audio book and the time flew by.
I have weighed myself first thing in the morning and last thing at night for years and I've written down the weights so I can see them....they remind me that I'm not as heavy as I used to be and that without vigilance will regain the weight I've lost....I don't let small increases or plateaus affect me because they are natural occurrences..instead I focus on the longer term trends.
I love nut butters...the kind made with nuts and no added sugar or salt...unfortunately, I am rarely able to be moderate with them and generally lie to myself about how much I'm eating so I don't buy them.
It has been only a little more than three months since my spine surgery and I am thrilled that I can walk for well over an hour, dance the whole two hour dance class, ride my exercise bike for 40-60 minutes at a stretch and do the physical therapy exercises with less and less muscle pain. I have to concentrate on my successes rather than be sad that I can't yet do a plank or any of the strong-lifts exercises that I did before. I'll try them again when six months have passed.
I am thrilled to see new faces and voices on this thread. I need all the encouragement and support I can get.
The dizziness that sent me to the Emergency Room on Christmas Day is gone. The pills they gave me were no help, just made me sleepy but a friend suggested a home remedy that she knew and it worked.
hubby, cat, and dog are all sleeping so I think I'll put on my headphones to listen to my audio book and get busy on my physical therapy exercises and maybe a few stretches.

Carol - Is that a new picture of you?? You look fabulous!! Got that no funny business power suit I mean business look about you. You go girl!
Looks like I get the snow bomb this time. Rode down to the gas station and bought more gas for The Snow Beast (snowblower) so I will have no excuse not to 'exercise' tomorrow. One little snowflake, two little snowflakes, many. many little snowflakes and all their cousins are showing up.

Margaret: Baby your knee until you feel better. I gave myself bursitis in my left knee several years ago trotting too long during a riding lesson. It is much better now, but I'm still careful not to do too many repetitive motions in a row. I can post at a trot but I don't post for long. Mostly, I sit there and let my bum take the pounding. It is still fairly well "padded."
pahyland: Welcome to a great group of supportive women. :flowerforyou:
richmondlady: The cabbage soup looks wonderful. Yum!
Belle_60: "I have 20 - 30 lbs. (-25 lbs. set for the 40 lbs. by May 27th Challenge) to drop that is just dragging me down!" Some of the challenges are too much for me. They try to get us to drop weight too fast for sustainable progress. I've lost well over 60 pounds, but it took a couple of years to accomplish. I'm still here to keep up my good habits so that I don't regain it all. This group is amazing and supportive. Welcome!
lklinkman: I weighed daily in the beginning, but have gradually reduced the number of times I get on the scale each week. I would recommend weighing at the same time of day for each weigh-in because weight tends to fluctuates a bit throughout the day. I usually weigh first thing in the morning so the time of day is consistent. :flowerforyou:
DJ: You look wonderful!
The car battery has been replaced & we have a new warranty. It cost $50 for the whole thing. I felt like we were treated fairly and now we know the car will start reliably. Yay!!!.

Today was my last day of watching Grandchildren for school break. Tomorrow I wake up to Freeeeeedddddooooommmmm! lol I love my grandchildren but I'm just not used to kids every day, all day for 2 weeks. We spent out last day at the zoo. One of my daughter's brought her two kids and we made it a cousin outing. It was fun. Hot and fun. Not sure what the temperature was but it might have hit 80. It made 4 hours of walking a combination of pleasant and un-pleasant.

Wow! Lots of posts!
My word this year is "JUMP". Not sure if it means I should get on the trampoline thingy I bought last year (which sits in my livingroom and laughs at me since it never gets used) or if I should Jump to a new job or new opportunities.
I'm looking forward to finding out!
Anyone use stepbet? It has motivated me to do a lot more walking.
take care everyone,

Thanks Katla. I turned down a job for tomorrow and the nest day. I plan to take it easy all week. I am even using a cane in our home. The sidewalks and parking lots are icy too, so all the more reason to stay home.1

Barbie, what is the therapy your friend gave you for dizziness? So far the only dizziness I am having right now is when I am in a lot of pain. But I don't want the other kind either.

Wow, ladies, we are a chatty bunch!! I can see that I'll need to check in every day just to keep up! I can't believe that I never used the Community feature of mfp before...wow, what a great resource you guys are.
There are so many things that were mentioned that I'd like to respond to, but can't remember them all. I guess the first thing that really jumped out at me in this forum is how brave and open you all are. I think sometimes it's really hard to open up about how much you weigh, what the measurements are, etc. I would like to get in on the 27 lb challenge, so will measure tomorrow morning and will post stats.
I'm a native Louisianian, married to a Cuban who emigrated when he was 6 and grew up in Miami. We met in New Orleans back in 1984, and lived in Louisiana till this last July, when we decided to have a new adventure and moved to Delray Beach FL. So, I've switched from peaches and pines to mangoes and palms, I guess! I'm still getting used to my new home, new climate, and being newly retired! 2016 was a year of huge change.
Toni, be patient and caring with your frozen shoulder. As a former exercise teacher and gym rat (we owned and operated a club in La for 9.5 years and I taught for 18), I ignored worsening bursitis in my left (non-dominant) shoulder for years. I kept lifting, working out, playing tennis, and "working through the pain". I'm now a year out from a total shoulder replacement. Yep, I'm bionic now! Actually, the surgery was less scary than I'd feared, and though the rehab was hard, I now have almost complete ROM and no pain. Now have to take better care of the left knee...sigh...if only you could tell when exercise becomes overuse... It's a fine line!
My word for 2017 is Balance. All my life, I've had a tendency toward the "all or nothing" mentality. Someone once told me that I only had 2 speeds: full ahead and stop. If I like something, I'm all in. And if not, well -- you get the picture! For food and wine (my biggest indulgence), that has meant that it's easier for me to bear down hard on a diet, any diet, work out like a fiend, lose the weight, then merrily go right back to what I'd been doing that got me there in the first place. I'd rather climb the mountain than walk the valley. That used to work in my 20s, 30s, even on into my 40s. When I turned 50, I discovered that method wasn't working so well. Now, at 63, with arthritis in both hips and a knee, mountain climbing just doesn't work. So, I'm going to try really hard to look for balance in all aspects of my life.
Whoever had the quote about "strategy works better than willpower" - I love it! Reminds me of that old Body for Life (anyone remember that?) deal about "if you're failing to plan, you're planning to fail". Also loved the lb of raw veggies...I could do that (except for the broccoli). Thanks for all the suggestions.
Gee -- didn't mean to write a book! But that's pretty much where I'm coming from. I'm really looking forward to being a member of this community, and thanks to you all for being so welcoming!7 -
Lenora- what color team are you on? You have to go to community, then to your group, that is where you find the 40lbs loss by May 27th. You can bookmark all the threads that are important to you. Your team color, the measurement thread, January challenge, and Tutorial Challenge group (navigation thread) week one weigh in is also posted. PM me if you have any other issues.
Glenda- if you are in the challenge that I posted on this thread then you can post your work out here. I did send you a friend request and you can post your workout on your status and I will see it on my newsfeed. You will also see my workout in both places. There are 4 to 5 other women on here doing the challenge. You are doing fantastic! You had an excellent fitness test.

lacruiser welcome. I came to MFP at age 62 after a lifetime of struggling with my weight. I thought I was doomed to being chubby or worse forever, but my husband had found an eating plan that was working for him and I decided to give weight loss one more try. I found MFP when looking for a site that had calorie counts for some food and have been an active participant ever since. I started by logging my planned food for the day and staying with the plan no matter what temptation or offer came along no matter how benign or kind. I used the food log to figure out what foods were the big calorie hogs so I could eliminate them in favor of things that allowed more food and nutrition for the same calories. I became open minded to new ideas and tried them out in my life and kept the ones that worked. I've done that one day at a time for several years including traveling and surgery. I found that recreational eating didn't work for me so now I don't entertain myself with food. I meet my friends for a walk rather than a meal and I'm not lured to social events just because the food will be great. I started reading books that were recommended by women on this thread and learned a lot about fitness, healthy eating, and happiness. I hope you will keep coming back and become a part of this community.

I can see it is going to be a challenge to keep up with all these posts! Love the veggie pictures.
Lenora- It is great that you exercise every day! I’m going to work on that. I am not on a special meal plan, but I just try to make healthy choices. Lots of vegetables and fruits, lean proteins, whole grains, limit fats and sugars.
Gloria- Good luck with the pipes and the cold weather!
Allie- I’m new here so I don’t know what you posted before today, but I just wanted to say hang in there. I’m sorry you are going through a difficult time right now. You can do this!
NYKaren- loved your tricks. I might try the gym clothes one.
Pahyland – I’m new in the community too and hope that posting and being active here will be motivational. I’ve seen some great ideas already.
Barbie- love the phrase “I don’t entertain myself with food” Might need to put that on the fridge.

Having weird issues with the thread tonight. Only seeing half the page, sometimes the right side and sometimes the left. Turned it off several times and now seems better.

Mary - will do fitness test tomorrow and post on newsfeed.
