There is a subset of people who do not respond well to SFA and see declines in metabolic markers. It would also come into question, if you were eating adequate MUFA and any plant based proteins as a means to get protein. Some of the more current research that I have seen would suggest, at least 15% of calories, that SFA is not as harmful as once thought. But that study shouldn't be interpreted as go eat as much SFA as possible. But it's unfortunately to hear you had a bad experience.3 -

Your doctor really misinformed you, though. A doctor doesn't have any nutrition/diet training past a semester. See a Dietitian not a doctor or Nutritionist.

I've lost over 100lbs eating lots of carbs. And, you cannot spot reduce. You lost weight because you were in a calorie deficit, not because of no carbs. You do not need to restrict yourself like this unless you have a medical condition....4 -

4. Sugar is NOT evil, the devil, or the devils spawn. Sugar is sugar and your body does not tell the difference between the types of sugar. One type of sugar isn't necessarily better than another.
5. Sugar does not cause fat storage unless you consume more calories than your maintenance.
6. Sugar is not high calorie.
7. Taubes, Dr Oz, Mercola, Adams, Fung, et al....All Quacks. And authority nutrition is not an authority on nutrition.
Seems like quite a few would benefit from reading up on scientific studies and even basic physiology.15 -

If you re-read my post, I had nothing bad to say about restricting all calories and keeping sugar in your diet. Check the nutrition info on the ice cream and you'll see it likely has as much fat as sugar.
The ice cream I eat has 17g sugar and 6g Fat for 200g. Calorie for calorie it has a tad more fat than carbs/sugar, or am i mathing wrong?0 -

well Im glad im losing fat off my belly and hips eating carbs and sugar. I eat a LOT of carbs too and have a metabolic disorder and still lose fat due to CICO(a deficit).1 -

it burns fat IF you are in a deficit. its not a magical fat loss way of eating. you wont store fat in any diet as long as there is a deficit.if you eat over your maintenance calories you will gain weight.because.....science10 -

You still need to be at a calorie deficit to lose weight though. If you're eating over on calories it doesn't matter what foods you're eating-you're going to gain weight.5 -

I do LCHF or Banting only between 25g to 50g if carbs per day. Also use Keto-recipes.

This does not sound like you are finding this sustainable. And I'm not surprised. This is not normal low carb - it is extreme and makes no sense.
I really advise you, if you want to go low carb, to seek out proper information (eg from the keto people on here) and give it a proper try. Then, if you find it suits you, great - if you don't, try something else, eg. eating a normal diet in moderation (it really does work for a lot of people). But stop asking this "doctor" for information, the information he is giving you is hopelessly wrong.7 -

Dietary fats do store as fat. In fact, it stores as fat easier than carbohydrates and protein. It's just less metabolically taxing to do so. If you look up studies on overfeeding studies, de novo liponesis would suggest that only about 30% of carbs would get stored.
What does occur during ketogenic diets is fat oxidation increase and carb oxidations decreases. So all you are doing is adjust substrate utilization. By no means does this mean you burn more body fat. That is actually a misnomer that many LCHFers who are new to the lifestyle would perpetuate. It's just a misunderstanding of the reference that you become a fat burning machine. What you many not realize, is that you are a fat storing machine as well.
Also, a person consistently burns both fat and glycogen. And this largely depends on the type of activity you are following.9 -

Please don't judge what my doctor put me on. Some of you had some lovely comments. This is not an insane diet it is just what my doctor put me on. All I asked for was for help from those who were on a similar diet. Maybe I should have written the whole chart like this from the beginning. I do not have sugar issues This is what he said would help me loose the best and I just said I would try it. I'm 2 weeks in and have lost 5.4lbs without being 100% on this diet and lost an inch in the waist and an inch in the hips.
Most doctors don't know a whole lot about nutrition, so patients with dietary issues should be referred to a dietitian.
The way to lose weight is to eat at a calorie deficit no matter what type of diet you choose. Low/lower carb works well for some, not so well for others.3 -

As a rule, carnivorous diets do not tend to lead to weight gain and high cholesterol. In most cases it is the opposite.
Of course if you eat too much food you will gain weight regardless.
I am not sure I would suggest that is a rule. I think it's a bit skewed since the people you are following that do it, are also into fitness.
Its like saying as a rule, plant-based are healthier people. But it's also correlated to the fact the many are paying attention to nutrition more and exercising more.

calorie reduction is impossible to sustain. If it wasn't - jenny craig, weight watchers and all of those other 'calorie counting' diets would not be making money and getting repeat clients. Why? We all know, once you go back to eating all those calories, you gain the weight back.
Uhhh...you don't maintain calorie reduction for life. You move to a maintenance level of calories. I lost weight eating around 2,300 calories per day...I've maintained going on four years at around 3,000 calories per day.
The reason those repeat customers come back is because they go back to old eating habits...they've learned nothing and haven't adopted a lifestyle that would have them maintain their weight...
I eat plenty of grains (oats are a staple whole grain) as well as lentils, legumes, whole food starches like potatoes and sweet potatoes and other root vegetables...no issues with maintenance here. There are plenty of nutritionally awesome carbs, and I'd include whole grains (oats) in that discussion among others.6 -

Honestly, I feel sorry for the OP, but I suspect she is long gone.
Low carbing can be fine for some people, but the information her doctor gave her wasn't enough to go on, was overly restrictive (what the heck with no diet soda or artificial sweetener?), and didn't give her a real understanding of how it all was supposed to work.
I hope she's still reading or at least went to the low carb group and will find out enough to stick to a calorie deficit, learn that she can eat vegetables and have artificial sweeteners, and that there are other options and different carb levels if low carbing isn't working for her.7 -

I would have a small problem if your doctor needlessly presented a ketogenic diet as the "only" way to lose weight. The relative merits of diets can be debated and there are pluses and minuses to consider.
I have a much bigger problem with obvious factual errors in the information you say you were provided with. Artificial sweeteners negatively affecting weight loss? "natural sugar" in bacon which is permissible, while (un)natural sugar in fruits or vegetables is not? Specific combinations of foods that target belly fat?
I am not a doctor. Your doctor is a doctor. Then again I've personally met doctors who I would classify as idiots.
I do not follow advice I receive from doctors I believe are idiots;not unless I get the advice confirmed through a second opinion I receive from a doctor whom I do not consider to be an idiot.6 -

Nothing wrong with your Drs program! It works for me and actually saved my life! We do not NEED sugar or starch to be healthy!! Starting wt: 513, Current 360!!! The Low Carb Support group on Facebook is great....and you can find plenty of recipes just by looking for Keto or Low-carb....I don't know how to add friends on here, but you're welcome to contact me.2

These threads are such a bummer for me. They give LCHF a bad reputation. It makes me really sad.
I eat lower carb because...diabetes. It's a total WOE for me. I eat potatoes (had an 8.1 ounce russet baked and topped with some kosher salt and 63 g of full fat sour cream as part of dinner tonight). I eat LOTS of vegetables (even the occasional ear of corn *gasp*). I eat rice, pasta, bread, cake, brownies, cheesecake, etc. I just eat it with my macros in mind and I do need to spread that throughout the day somewhat to keep my blood sugar stable.
I've lost 14% of my body weight since July (I know because I went to see the doctor today and when she tried to update my electronic chart it gave her an alert to double-check my weight). Sadly it has not all come from my stomach and thighs. I've lost a little everywhere. I notice the most in my face and stomach though.
OP, please be careful. I have some serious reservations about this plan. It doesn't seem sustainable, and a sustainable way of eating is essential to this journey. If it isn't a way you can envision yourself eating 5 years from today then I suggest you get a second medical opinion from a dietitian. The way I eat now was actually designed specifically FOR ME when I was pregnant and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
Please be sure to take care of yourself. I'm afraid your energy level will wane terribly and negatively impact any fitness goals you might have. Also remember that very low carb diets tend to require an increase in sodium intake.11 -

Since you asked ... you're mathing wrong.
17 X 4 = 68 calories of sugar in 200 g serving (and probably more calories of total carbs, but you didn't give us the carbs grams)
6 X 9 = 54 calories of fat in 200 g serving0 -

Since you asked ... you're mathing wrong.
17 X 4 = 68 calories of sugar in 200 g serving (and probably more calories of total carbs, but you didn't give us the carbs grams)
6 X 9 = 54 calories of fat in 200 g serving

OP, some people have great success doing keto or low carb, so if you want to give it a shot, go for it.
But your doctor has no clue what he's talking about. Please find the Low Carb group here on MFP and get more solid info on how to eat that way correctly. Best of luck11
