Why did you come to the conclusion to lose weight?

Sigh. In September, I was at the emergency room with a swollen leg that turned out to be cellulitus. While antibiotics cleared up that infection, I developed lymphedema right on its heels. While I was getting daily dressing changes and more antibiotics, I was referred to a vascular surgeon who, after testing, diagnosed me with poor lower-body circulation and refluxed veins—which were impacting my lymphatic system. He told me that losing weight would mean that my lower body wouldn't have to strain as much and would ultimately help manage my condition.
Meanwhile, my father came to visit and tried to pressure me into having bariatric surgery. Which is not a route I want to go down. He's also struggled with his weight and developed Type II diabetes (now gone since he's had the surgery).
Enough was enough. I'm here and down 30lbs since Oct 30th.9 -
During summer seat belts at a carnival for some rides don't fit... and it's embarrassing to have to walk off cause of that.
I'm also depressed cause of my weight and how much I let myself go.

like most everyone it wasnt that i had no idea i was overweight, just didnt much care. would eat fast food after the gym etc..
then took a vacation to california to visit my niece graduating highschool and the pic we all took together was the straw.
just took it nice and slow. dropped 60 pretty quickly (4 or 5 months) and then would even out, lose even out.
im not getting even more serious than i was in an effort to lose the last 304 -
I had been in good shape around my senior year of high school and through college. I played a lot of hockey and then I hurt my knee at work. I was on crutches for 6 months after surgery and I ballooned up. My first hockey game back I was slow and felt very clumsy. I chalked this up to not playing in 6 months, but it kept happening. I had been around 175 and now I was 235. I couldn't believe it. In 6 months I had gained 60 pounds. (2005)
A few years later I saw a picture of me holding my nephew and I looked so overweight and gross in the picture that it shook me, but not enough to change my habits (2010).
The moment I really realized I need to lose weight was when I went to the doctor for some issues I was having with my neck. I got a copy of the report he sent to the insurance company. It started out with "Patient is a well groomed, overweight male......" I realized then that I was seen as overweight by others. The denial I had been giving myself was gone. This was a realization. (2011)
Looking back it is these 3 moments that I recall that made me see I needed to change. I was as high as a 42 waist and now I am a 35.5 and I am down to 185 pounds. My motivation now continues to be my health, but I also have two little girls and I want to be able to keep up with them and be that dad that doesn't watch his kids, but actually goes and plays with his kids.5 -
I've actually been over weight my whole life and it's stopped me from doing things I really wanted to do. One of my ultimate things I've ALWAYS wanted to do was join the air force, but being over weight has always stopped me. I've tried losing weight before and it's always been so hard for me, so I give up. Now I'm more motivated because I live like 20 mins from Lackland and I feel like it's within arms length to get where I want to be.5

My dad gave me his horrible back problems. I had back surgery when I was 10 for scoliosis and they fused a rod into my lower spine. It was 60% curved and I was a month or 2 away from becoming a vegetable. 20 years later.. I have back pain all the time and I realized I need to take care of myself and not end up like my dad, who has had dozens of spine and neck surgeries and can barely stand or turn his head. My mom's side has Alzheimer's/Dementia, depression, anxiety, diabetes, etc.. Just want to be fit and healthy, so I can be around for my son and hopefully grandkids.2

I always said I never want to hit 200lbs because I'm very petite.
Welp! I weighed myself 2 weeks ago and the pounds done caught up to me I was 202lbs...3 -
Two weeks ago I went to the vet with my puppy and I stepped onto the scale and realized I weigh 170+lbs, I'm 35 lbs overweigh! So I started with MFP the same day and now I try to eat healthy, no more beer, butter or bread for this bully. I walk 12 km every day and try to run a bit. I'm going to step on that scale in two weeks and be proud2

Hey, that's the same weight that finally got me motivated (actually 202.5).1 -
I started having shortness of breath and being a smoker on top of that just made it so much worse when I started putting on the pounds. So, now I'm trying to quit smoking and lose weight. Very difficult with very little lungs capacity.1

I started gaining weight after finding out that my mom had cancer and after my relationship hit a low point. The two happened around the same time. I stopped being constantly active, which had kept me slim. I was around 30 lbs over weight when I decided to do something about it, but shortly after, I realized that I was pregnant.
I had a rough pregnancy. Sick the whole time, horrible back pain, hip pain (had been in a bad accident when I was 18) and just couldn't be active enough. Then I had to have an emergency cesarean. I was up all night and day with my son for art least the first 3 months, because his dad thought that giving me the 3 hour nap was doing his part.
My mom got worse and then passed away. That was what really hit me. Losing her was devastating. I already had depression, but dealt with it without medication. Losing her pushed me over the edge. It's been four years and I still have "Aftershocks" and the deep depression starts again, even with the meds.
I'm trying to be more active, healthy and happy mostly for my son. He shouldn't be stuck with this version of me. I used to be happy, healthy, and fun. I'm doing it for myself; so I can feel good again. So I can be comfortable with myself and do the things I enjoy. For my family and friends, so that I can be around longer for them. I'm doing it for my mom, because I know that she would want me to be healthy and happy again.6 -
Sorry to hear about your mom! I can relate to that. My mom passed away in 2012 and it was the hardest thing to accept. I still reach out to call her on the phone, then remember she's gone. I still miss her so much. And you was talking about antidepressants and they cause weight gain. I was diagnosed with bipolar when I was 30 and taking them every since. Now im going through menopause and I started packing on the pounds. But I'm glad you friend me. It's good to have support and inspiration. Holler at me anytime.3

My story is a little funny. I was sitting in my chilly office with a small jacket on. I leaned back to yawn and a button from my jacket popped off and flew accross the room. That was my AH HA moment. What was yours?
I don't know if it was one thing, or lots of little things. I am just hoping this time, God help me that I will see it through and get healthier.0 -
When my husband wanted to take me on a two week cruise and we had to go buy new clothes and all of them were 2 sizes bigger than I had been wearing. Also realized all of my clothes were made of stretch material.1

I've been slowly gaining a lot of weight since my 20s (even when I was in the Army.) I've known it, I've made attempts to lose it with very little success - gained a lot more very quickly over the last year at the same time they discovered a thyroid nodule. Passed a threshold I never thought I'd ever see in my entire life. I don't fit in auditorium seats, my office chair squeaks a lot when I sit it in - I always think I'm going to break it, I had to shop for a bunch new clothes this year to include coats, etc...and last summer I acquired my grandparents' bedroom furniture. Beautiful 1940s furniture, but all mirrors - something I didn't have in my room before. All of this put together, along with my thyroid surgery and starting medication is the extra push I needed. I've been so disheartened in the past, but apparently I could live with it 30 lbs ago. Now, not so much, and now that I know it may not have been all my fault (though some of it still is - not passing off all the blame!) and it could be more attainable now that we're getting other things under control, it's really helped with my motivation as well.1

I went to the doctor to realize I gained another 10 pounds after having the flu. When I got married I was a size 0, fast forward 10 years in a 10 or 12. And I can't blame it on having children. I'm just so uncomfortable in my body anymore.. I don't even feel like it's my body. I don't feel sexy for my husband anymore.1

I went for a check-up.Last July..Was 20lbs overweight,smoked a ton,very stressful job...
Doc looks at me after tests straight in the face and says your a stroke or heart attack waiting to happen at 46yrs old.
Theres a gym around the corner from Docs office,i left office and went and joined the gym.
Ive dropped 15lbs and have quit smoking.Also have put on muscle..
Havnt felt this good in years...8 -
I am one of the heaviest and most out of shape people I know - going up a flight of stairs winds me and I can't keep up with my kids or play sports anymore. A few weeks ago I was experiencing some chest pain and that worried me. I have started over to get in shape and so far so good - 14 pounds lost, about 113 pounds to go!5

I gained 20 pounds in 2 months and managed to stop it but then realized I was wearing leggings all the time because none of my pants fit. When I broke my foot at the end of Jan, I laid around not doing anything - decided end of Feb, since I gained another 7lbs in that 1 month, I needed to do something.2

When none of my clothes fit any more and I refuse to buy the next size up.1

Ogopogo: If you haven't already gone to your doctor, please do so. Chest pain needs to be checked out, sooner than later. We all would like to hear of your continued success.1

A few things happened right together. The first was the day I went to get a pedicure and I couldn't even lift my leg over the edge of the foot tub to get into the seat. I had to grab my pant leg and hoist my leg over the edge. The second was I broke a hammock. The final straw was watching my grandmother go through countless nearly life-threatening health crises that were almost totally related to her poor diet, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.3

Lord, not even cancer could get me to face how bad I had gotten! I guess right now, I'm just so fed up with always being tired, moody, and my knees constantly hurting. Plus my bad habits are rubbing off on my husband and step-daughter, whom were not overweight before I came into the picture. Now I'm trying to get all of us to eat better and move more. I've accepted that I'll never be one of those effortlessly thin people. I will need to track for the rest of my life.2

My cholesterol and weight were both at an all-time high during my annual physical this Feb. I also turned 40 in Jan. I've never been a thin person, so i just decided that was okay/normal for me to weigh more than I should. I now see that my health stats are being affected by these extra pounds and the bad habits that come with them, so i can't just get away with it any longer. If I don't start changing my ways now, I'll continue to get in worse shape with increased age. I've lost 10 lbs since the end of Feb and need to lose about 30 more to even be at the top of my "acceptable" weight range! good luck to all.4

@rhiawiz57 Keep up your great start. My high pain level of 40 years is very low today after finding MFP back in 2014 and learned how to manage my pain and escape Rx and over the counter meds by my way of eating.3
