I totally read that as glow in the dark at first. If that were true, corn mazes would be really cool.11 -
I went to my chiropractor last night and when I walked in he was talking to his previous appointment about the "blood type diet." Pretty sure I rolled my eyes out loud. Then he began to ask me about my powerlifting, and he about lost his kitten when I told him I was currently on 50% carbs. He seriously asked me "What's the science behind that?" I thought, "You've got to be kidding me?!? You were just advocating the blood type diet to someone, and you want to know the 'science' behind mine?!?"
He's a really nice guy and a terrific chiropractor, but I won't be taking diet advice from him anytime soon.9 -

pertsonally i find this very true .... but i have also heard
SUGAR DOESNT MAKE YOU FAT .
Have you ever taken heroin? Have you ever spent time with people who are addicted and seen first hand what it does to them? Have you ever left your family, alienated your friends and committed a felony so you can get your sugar fix? Have you ever sold your car or your belongings so you can buy a cake?

My son is a heroin addict. His first sentence was 38 months in prison, second sentence he's currently serving is 1 year in jail followed by 6 months residential treatment, followed by 2 years probation. And he still relapsed while in the residential program within days of getting out of jail!! He has 15 felony convictions in three different counties all related to stealing to support his habit. He's lost his daughter, all his belongings, has former friends overdosing right and left (the guy across the street was found dead with the needle still in his arm), and my ex-husbands' entire family won't speak to him. I wouldn't compare heroin addiction to anything but pure hell.20

at first this thread had me cracking up, but now there's 6 pages of these "alternative facts" and i'm just losing faith in humanity
It is actually one of the reasons I stopped practicing Buddhism.
That isn't even a joke.

...Daft: After having lost 20+lbs, I stopped by a trainer offering free body fat percentage scans at my gym. The % was only 2% lower than what it was when I started losing weight. I asked him, do you have another machine - this can't be right? He goes, no it's definitely right - you probably aren't losing as much fat/weight as you think you are.. I argued and said I've also been heavy lifting, it's impossible. I finally demanded he use a different machine - I was right. Can you imagine if you had low self-esteem/confidence, but were feeling really proud of yourself at this point, and you met this person who basically told you - you haven't changed anything? Scary.
BIA devices are highly inaccurate. When I started at my current gym, they offered me an initial body assessment with BF% measurement. I asked how they took their measurements and she showed me one of the handheld BIA devices. I said no thanks. I have calipers and a MyoTape at home which I use to take monthly measurements, and although calipers still aren't 100% accurate (nothing but autopsy truly is), I trust the results a lot more than any BIA device.5 -
I had a friend tell me once , "you have been on a diet so many times, you think you would be good at it by now"2

Most BIA scanners are usually not much better than toys.
The fact is that things like time of day, hydration levels, when you last went to the bathroom, the last time you ate, the last time you exercised and even time of month (female) can affect the numbers of ANY body fat measurement.
The "trainer" is incompetent. If it helps then you can tell him I said so.
For what it is worth, a Bod Pod and DEXA scans are better than gym BIA devices, but hydrostatic weighing is the Gold Standard.
Some hospitals and gyms have trucks with dunk tanks that drive around every month or so if you do a Google search.
The easiest thing is just to do a waist measurement at the belly button with a cloth tape once a week, first thing in the morning after using the bathroom.
If your waist measurement isn't moving every few weeks then you may need to make adjustments.
@AnvilHead mentioned calipers which can also work but it can be tough to get an accurate measurement of the same site every time. Takes practice and experience.
And yeah, the only thing more accurate than hydrostatic weighing is an autopsy but that is a bit extreme...

I was just using it as a reference point to gage progress vs. completely accurate. A trainer had me use it when I first started working out, so I was curious what I was down in reference to that same measurement tool. Pure curiosity, not necessity.
The machine inaccuracy isn't what was appalling, it was the trainer that told me I still have a high body fat comp and I haven't been progressing like I thought I was. It was concerning to me that he would say that to someone so vehemently. I almost spoke to a manager about it, but decided to let it go. I think he was a supervisor. Someone that busts their *kitten off, and to be told you're not really doing anything... terrible.
Edit to add: I appreciate your advice/insight - when I'm ready to get an accurate reading... I'll definitely take both of your advice. Thank you!!2 -

Hihi that might be it. Though right now the family sized pizza would be more to my taste2 -
Ha, I just heard a new one. I walked almost 13K steps yesterday. For the first time in my life. It was a bit of an overdo, since I've been working up to 10K. My ankles are sore today. I'm thinking I may have overexerted myself and just need to rest. My neighbor:
Oooh, that's because your body is not supposed to do that. It's used to being at a certain activity level. Your body's starting to break down. Be careful. You may get brittle bones or osteoporosis.
Apparently, she also had a friend who passed away after starting a healthy lifestyle. So, naturally, I'm in danger. From walking.
Checking my symptoms on WebMD (because my IQ does literally drop when listening to some people) just revealed I may have a severe liver disease, blood condition, or cancer.
Do you guys think a little ice and massage may help counter these fatal predictions/diagnoses, or nah?25 -

That would be true for me, at least.
Perhaps I could fall into a vat of sushi first..7 -

If you want to lose weight you're supposed to eat 5 small meals a day.
My boyfriend said this last night, I just laughed and said ok.5 -

MomReborn: Try RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. In other words, lie on the couch with your feet on a pillow, ice bag (or frozen vegetables) around any swelling, and put on an ace bandage if you need to be on your feet and the ankles are hurting.3

"Controlling calories doesn't work "
"Artificial sweetener will make you fat. You should use sugar instead."4 -
1. "You have to eat breakfast!! You need to get your metabolism going for the day!" (I.E., make me ravenous all day so I eat all the foods and gain weight? Ummm, no...)
2. "After 40 it's just so hard to lose weight!" (Well we're all different, and maybe it's a little harder, but counting calories worked for me 17 years ago, and it's working for me now at 43, soooo...I'm glad I ignored this one!)
3. Them: "You're looking thin lately!"
Me: "Thanks, I've been working at it."
Them: "Lately I just look at food and gain weight!" (Well no, you're looking at it, and then eating too much of it, just like I was.)3 -

For me I think it's more because the last time I wore them I fell down my stairs and then had to sit down for the rest of the day so that I could recover, thus limiting my calorie burn.0 -

I have a friend who knew of someone who had peacock feathers in their house and it got bombed in the Blitz. Apparently this is proof that it is bad luck to have peacock feathers in your house (and not, as I would have thought, proof that it was bad luck to live in industrial areas in the West of Scotland during the Blitz).
Fwiw, walking is protective against osteoporosis. It's lack of weight bearing exercise that's the risk factor.

I had a friend tell me she was adding Hot Cheetos to her weight-loss plan because she needed more protein in her diet. Because cheese. She didn't want to lose muscle while losing pounds and needed more healthy snacks.
I just responded with "maybe you should read the label" . . . . .
