I accidentally packed my non-waterproof jacket instead of my waterproof one. The rain started just about 1 mile into my run. So for 8 of my 9 miles, I got absolutely soaked through, wearing just my non-waterproof jacket with a t-shirt underneath, in 42°F temps, with a damn headwind on the way back. At least I had my hat to keep the water out of my eyes. This was truly one of those mind over matter runs. Everything on me was cold, and it took me forever to change afterwards because my hands were literally stiff from being cold. I still have my coat on at my desk at work, lol. BUT, the miles got done!!! Victory!!!
Everything in this post screams bad @$$. Awesome!!!

Nominal Challenge Goal – 225 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward Boston. Run well at the USATF Masters 8K Championship in Virginia Beach.
Today's notes – Yesterday was the third and final maximum distance run of the training plan. After the first two, Sunday's assignment was a moderately long run training me to run on tired legs. Today's assignment was 30 minutes easy.
The mental games of taper have begun. Several times I told myself I could run 4 miles, it's not that much longer than 30 minutes. Or run 6 miles, because I feel so healthy. And so on. Then a fortunate thing happened.
After church this morning, I stopped at Subway for lunch. Ran into a non-runner I knew from a church I attended for a while in 2014. He asked if I was still running, and I found myself explaining what was left of the training cycle to Boston. Today's assignment is 30 minutes. "That won't be much for you, huh?" "It's going to feel like I haven't done anything."
Just explaining the concept of taper and why I restrict myself to fewer miles grounded me and quieted the testosterone voice in my head. I came home and saw that my porch thermometer said it was 56º F (13º C) out. I already knew the wind was not a major factor. Threw on a pair of shorts and my 2016 Boston Qualifier tee, and went out for my easy 30 minutes.
It didn't quite feel like I hadn't done anything. I did have to keep slowing myself down as I saw my pace creeping toward MP, but I got it done. Got back to my driveway with 10 seconds left, ran past to 30 minutes, and stopped the watch while I slowed to a walk. I worked up a very light sweat and felt like I'd don't a warm up.
Looked at the stats: 3.86 miles in 30:01, for an average pace of 7:47 per mile. Average HR 119, max HR 132. 2:12 in Zone 2, 21:56 in Zone 1, and by inference 5:53 in Zone Zero. Yep, it felt pretty easy. I'm pretty sure the 2 minutes in Zone 2 were on the small hill I put in the route.
Near month-end goal assessment: I won't hit my nominal mileage goal. I don't care. Stay healthy, check. Train well toward Boston, I'm in better shape right now than I was at the same point of the training cycle last year. Run Virginia Beach well, turned in a PR more than half a minute faster than I thought possible and stayed healthy. I'm very happy with my performance versus real goals right now.

Just lost a post. Don't see the one one nine spam number. Wonder if I ran into another one; a message flashed past that I couldn't read before it vanished. Anyway, 3.86 easy miles today, one eight six point three five for the month, don't feel like re-writing the notes.
Edit to add. I found it. The magic spam number was my average heart rate for today's run, and I didn't realize it until the post didn't post. Dang, that spam filter is annoying.2 -

321 miles/2,017 miles - goal for the year
Yesterday was 4 miles on the dreadmill, plus a very intense zumba class. Not running related, but I had a great experience in zumba class yesterday. In case you can't tell from my pics, I'm pretty white, lol. But in zumba class, the African/dance hall/Caribbean numbers are my jam! And I think I do pretty well at them (of course, it's helpful that as I've mentioned, dancing was my sport, I did it for 20 years of my life, although not African dance, lol). So yesterday I got up front for one of the African numbers, with two other ladies from class who are actually black and have studied African dance. I danced my heart out! And actually had someone come up to me after the number to ask if I study African dance cause I was so good at it! I'm a little bit legit! Woot! I can die happy now, lol.
Anyway, today was a 12 mile long run. This was at the end of my first week including a 5th running day, and my first EVER 40 mile week. I was a little concerned because I had missed a bit of mileage progression due to the neverending sinus infection I'd had previously, but I ended up managing it with no problem. I ran easy for 11 miles, and although my legs were tired by the end, they weren't dead or beat up, so I managed to have my 12th mile be the fastest of my run. Provided the rest of the month goes to plan, I should finish the month with 139 miles, which isn't terribly far off my goal, so I'm happy about that!
@Stoshew71 thank you! I felt like a bad@ss! lol7 -
Like @Stoshew71 I miss @skippygirlsmom and her words of wisdom/Skippy Updates, also miss @kristinegift who I haven't seen posting in some time.
@KatieJane83 Yes you definitely qualify as BadAss - I find the runs where I mess-up clothes/attire are real confidence boosters = Look at what I can do even when I have made a mistake.
20 km HM Training Run this morning with one of the ladies in our local club.
Her HM Pb is 1:51, mine 2:12 so I had to work pretty hard today to keep pace, even though she did pull back some.
In the last 4 km I started to kick rocks which meant that I was not lifting my feet on recovery. I actually feel more beat up than after my last HM where I set my PB which means today = a D@m Good Training Run. Net 154m Elevation with most of that in the last 4 km = why I started kicking rocks. The last 4 km of this was intentionally picked as part of the route as it closely match's up to the last 3-4 km of our next HM - where you drop into the Bottom of a River Valley, cross the River and then back uphill to the Rolling terrain along the Riverbank.

Sorry - I've skimmed through the posts here but not properly read them so hope everyone is doing okay. @skippygirlsmom keep coming back with updates and @RespectTheKitty so glad you posted with a quick update on your outpatient clinic. We're all thinking of you (speaking for everyone else here in this challenge!)
I've travelled down to see my
Mum for Mother's Day (this is England, we go for a different day to others- it's a religious things, in one of the least religious countries in the world...) and am deeply regretting not bringing my running gear. I'm at the beach, the sun has been shining, the tide has been out. There's been SO MUCH BEACH for me to play with. Oh I want to run ten miles along this beach!!
Home tomorrow. Let's hope the weather holds out so I can run as a kind of penance for my stupidity.4 -
10km road race today ATB!! My PB time !! Then another 5 easy km on the treadmill!

Notes:
Really nice 8 mile long run this afternoon! I got rained on really hard the first 15 minutes, but then things cleared up after that and the sun even came out a bit! Warm enough that I ditched my soggy windbreaker to run in my tank top. My legs are feeling quite recovered from last weekend's race after a nice low mileage week of only easy running. Ready to start strong tomorrow training for the Chicago Spring Half Marathon!
@BeeerRunner - We'll have to look for each other at the starting line! And maybe try to meet up at the post-race festivities
@midwesterner85 sounds like a really fun race! Maybe they should advertise as a mud run next year haha
Training For:
03/19: Excalibur 10 Miler (Viera, FL) 1:19:00 - new PR!
04/23: Ravenswood Run, 5K (Chicago)
05/21: Chicago Spring Half Marathon
10/08: Chicago Marathon
11/26: Space Coast Half Marathon (Cocoa, FL)3 -
@ariceroni Yes, it was fun, but I'm not sure they could advertise as a mud run. They list as a trail run on mixed terrain, but no way they could guarantee rain to make it mud on those sections instead of dirt.0

I still haven't really caught up on the thread, but I have been able to read some of the last few pages.
@RespectTheKitty We're all thinking of you! I'm glad that you're getting the help you need and I really hope that the program is beneficial to you.
@skippygirlsmom I miss seeing your posts here (when I can keep up with the thread, that is) so I'm glad to see you drop in. Great news that you were able to run a few miles pain free today!
@BeeerRunner Awesome price for your flight! Hope you can get your bday BQ (I'm sure you will) and then you will have another thing to celebrate with beers with your friends when you get home I'm toying with the idea of doing a 31 mile (50k) race September of next year for my 31st birthday. I keep going back and forth because I'm not sure that's how I'll want to spend my birthday weekend (plus that distance sounds scary), but it won't be on my actual birthday so at least there's that.

Today was a cross training day and I was on the go all day...I feel like I did about everything except go for a run (which I really wanted to, but I know for now it's smart not to run the day after long runs). Between running errands, cleaning my entire apartment top to bottom, and spending a large amount of time on PT exercises, I was going to go to the gym for some time on the elliptical. However, I didn't really feel like dragging myself over there, so I decided to do a workout video (30 Day Shred). The strength part of that workout made me realize I'm not quite as strong as I thought I was. I think I'll probably add this workout (or similar strength training) into my cross training rotation. I can already feel some soreness in my legs, so hopefully my run tomorrow morning won't be affected.3 -
After watching Arrogate's performance in the Dubai World cup, I really wanted to run this afternoon...so inspired! Even my husband who doesn't watch horse racing watched the race on You tube 3 times. Anyhow the weather has been great in Indy, temperature in the 70's Had to run in a head wind during the last 3 miles ,and the weather a little warmer than I like. Otherwise, felt great. I changed my posture to a more forward lean, and have been avoiding the back issues. Definitely feeling it in my hamstrings and gluts.
Loved watching Arrogate as well! I really need to take a good look at all the Derby contenders, just haven't had time to keep up with it all this year. Do you have a pick for the Derby yet or still too early?

No news on the trail situation so I have been off my usual route since Thursday (the lady and her baby are fine btw, someone else was attacked on Friday though- so far the police are saying not connected but it has not been a good week for the trails here).
My poor husband put down a small fortune on my new Precor that is due to be delivered this week- hurray for treadmill days.
Also got my new shoes! Saucony Nomad TR for trail, Saucony Guide 10's for road and took the them both out today, haha ! The Nomads are AMAZING. I had a lot of steep decline/sharp incline in my trail work (a system outside of town)- they handled so well that running on ice only became an issue on the one ridiculous decline. That one I overshot a little and lost some skin but that was my judgment fail. The Guides are nice, better for my pronation for sure but the route I went with on roads was basically 4km of incline out of 6km so I didn't get a good sense of how they handled on decline/level ground. Hoping to do about 12km in them tomorrow to figure them a bit better and maybe get my stuff together and meet my monthly goal before March is through

Wow, really underestimated my milage goal this month (in a good way)! Depending on what the week brings, I may clock in around 200 for the month. Awesome. Weekend running was amazing. This can be such a tricky time of year, but Saturday and Sunday were gorgeous in my neck of the woods. Had to get the car serviced this morning so no AM run for me, but I have 4 x 1 mile repeats @ 5k pace, so we will see.

Great run this morning! I felt good enough to run the 4.1 miles straight, with just one stop for a few seconds to move the annoying headlamp from my head to my waist. I kind of forgot about the usual recovery walk, now around 3-3.5 miles, and when my watch beeped at 3 miles I didn't even hesitate to keep going. The only grumble I have about my run was the thousands of worms on the streets (and gross smell) as a result of last night's storm. Happy last week of March!7 -

I felt really good this morning. I was able to get 10 miles in with 4 of those miles at near tempo pace. First mile 8:19 which was supposed to be a warm up mile then mile 2- 7:32 3-7:22 then slowed it down for a 8:32 mile then back on again with mile 5 at 7:28 then a couple of rest miles at 8:51 then 8:13 and then picked it back up with a 7:18 mile on 8, then cool down for a couple of miles 9:17 and 8:40. I really need to push myself with about a month left till my marathon. I feel like I am too slow for my BQ pace so I am really trying to pick up the speed in these last few weeks.

@OSUbuckeye906 yuck I had wormy streets after a rain, ugh!
@whatmerunning great job in the cold rain, I don't mind cold I don't mind rain, but cold rain horrible.
Ran another 3.2 this morning and it felt good. I'm amazed at how fast my "fitness" has dropped but it's okay it'll come back. Need to get off the 20 lbs I gained, so sad. But I will do that too.
Skip and I still plan to run our HM in a couple of weeks, even if I have to walk 1/2 of it. She said she wants to stay with me, I hate that but honestly she hasn't been training for it so she's better off. She'll make me want to work harder so her first HM isn't a bust.

Haven't checked in in a while, getting nasty flue, then recovering, and a weekend with family took up all my time. March has been a horrible month for running, but I'm finally feeling OK, so I'm hoping to get back on track with my training. I have 12 weeks to train, so I'm going to give it my best shot.7

Nice slow, easy run this morning. I'm going to have to up my goal for next month!
