For the future: "Help I stalled posts"..read this

Everyone loves the first few weeks of a committed diet. The pounds do shed off and the motivation is extremely high. Then it happens. Your doing everything right and you hit a perceived stall. You freak out (at least I did), you post on the boards to find out what is happening! What to do. First relax, take a huge deep breath and buy these! I have been in a four week "weight stall", but my body fat has gone down 2%. I think everyone should buy one of these - around $35. Yep, thats it and the peace of mind it will buy

Okay, but neither are good indicators of lower levels of body fat.
The omron uses BIA which can vary wildly depending on your hydration levels. Especially if you're doing keto as stated in the OP.
A measuring tape (especially on the abdomen) can also vary depending on the time of day, food consumed, time of the month, food intolerances, etc.9 -

Then I guess there are absolutely nothing out there to help you to get away from the scale numbers. Sorry. Works for me though1 -

There are spring-based-calipers and accurate measurements like: dexa scans, hydrostatic weighing, and bodpod tests. All of these can be done in your local sports clinic. You can also use weight trending apps like happyscale.
But in general, if you aren't losing any weight and your main goal is fat loss there's a pretty good chance that the issue lies with the total calories you're eating.5 -
As you stated, it could move you away from just the scale. Funny... the scale can vary depending on... hydration level, time of day, food consumed, time of the month, food intolerance...5

Don't worry Johnnylew; people love pointing out minor flaws and making themselves feel special; even though, as you stated, it could move you away from just the scale. Funny... the scale can vary depending on... hydration level, time of day, food consumed, time of the month, food intolerance...
Hence why i suggested a weight trending app and actual accurate methods of measurement. By the way, I am posting this for others as this is who OP's post is clearly directed at. If you aren't losing weight over time... sorry, the problem more than likely lies with your diet.8 -
Not so rainbow. The closer people get to their ideal weight the scale will be more of a lying enemy of their progress. And if you have been on these boards you will see so many new to the weight loss journey get discouraged and give up after a perceived stall. When in fact they are still making progress but the scale said otherwise. So newbies and frustrated stallers the scale is not the best indicator and should not de-motivate you. Keep up on your plan and use other tools to gauge your progress2

How's that funny? I mean that's part of the answer sometimes, when people ask why their scale hasn't moved. The answer isn't usually "go buy another device that can change just as much, to confuse you even more" If people freak out so much that they don't want to learn about weight trends while trying to lose weight, how is a piece of equipment that is going to tell them they are 25% body fat one day, and then after a week of working out, and eating under there calorie limit tells them they are 27% body fat a week later going to help?

I got the Omron body fat monitor. While I understand it's not the most accurate tool, I plan on using it same time each week( early mornings) and see what happens. Tape measure never really works well for me because I'm never sure if I'm measuring on the same spot.0

Here's an example of what can happen to people when trying to get their body fat % from something that may not be accurate.0 -

That's perfect @Ironandwine690 -
Could always use a trend app (libra - free, happyscale - free) and take pics (free). Just my $0.02.6

The trouble with *some* low-carbers is that they don't understand why they lose that much in the first place. When you deplete glycogen and the 3g of water it costs to store it/gram you lose fast. So much so that you could be in a caloric surplus and still "lose" weight (the first few weeks anyhow). The goal is and should be FAT loss. Until people understand their TDEE and their intake in relation to that figure and what that means is happening in their body they will be a slave to something; ignorance. Good luck op13

I like you accounted for inflation! Yep a trend app for the scale could work but again it's tied to the scale. I knew a person who lost a dress size at the same time the trend app showed a weight increase.0 -
Some people really baffle me on MFP they do not seem to be here for support. But I am sure most people will make up there minds listen to reason and push through to their goals
I'm sorry, i've just been here for 6 years now and i've seen it all almost all. Like another poster said above, the answer is never "go buy another device that can change just as much, to confuse you even more". This isn't "not showing support" but just my experience having been at this for a very very long time.
I'm also a professional in this industry and personally track these measurements with hundreds of clients over the past few years. Unless they are already at a very low body fat percentage and we've been training/dieting specifically for recomp the answer is almost always that they aren't losing fat because they are eating too many calories.
I would say 99% of the time in fact that people who come onto myfitnesspal and complain about not losing weight aren't seeing success because they are inaccurate in their counting. There have been COUNTLESS threads with individuals coming back months later and saying they got a food scale and were shocked how much they were overeating.20 -

Support does not mean blindly agreeing with what anyone posts. The BF% tools (like the scale I have at home) are just not accurate or consistent enough to be that useful of a tool. I do have a tape like that, though.
I also agree with @fascha that the water loss may be masking a fat gain with someone starting KETO and it still comes to to calories consumed.7 -
Some people really baffle me on MFP they do not seem to be here for support. But I am sure most people will make up there minds listen to reason and push through to their goals
Couple of questions. 1st, what kind of support is this "First relax, take a huge deep breath and buy these!" How is telling somebody to buy something so supportive, instead of trying to actually explain to them why something is happening to them, and then recommending what to do? Where was the information for what you recommended? You didn't tell anybody why you used them, how to use them to be most accurate, why they are helpful, and how it could help them change what they are doing if they stall is from something like inaccurate logging, or tracking of calories burnt or consumed. 2nd what kind of particular support you are personally looking for with this post?
So yeah I guess I'm missing out on the support part. Because I could easily just make a post saying "buy this" and show a picture of a food scale, but if there isn't any context to it, I'm not supporting anybody, just trying to get somebody to buy something.

I don't understand how relying on one number vs another is a good thing?
They are all impacted by a lot of different factors.
even a dexa scan is not 100%...it has a margin of error.
Perhaps instead of relying on numbers only look at the mirror...check how your old clothing fits and if you have to go buy new ones...along with the numbers on the scale or tape measure or bodyfat%...
and truth be told if you stall on Keto or not keto and it's been over 4-6 weeks you need to eat less.
if it's under 4 weeks it's not a stall...weight loss is not linear.9 -

But you are also advocating using an electronic device as a measurement system as well correct?

Yes but two that measure something other than weight alone.0 -
Ironandwine69 wrote: »Tape measure never really works well for me because I'm never sure if I'm measuring on the same spot.
Same here. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue.
Scale always worked fine for me, but photos and clothes can work too (to supplement OP's point, I guess).
When I started I had a few pairs of jeans, same brand, in different sizes, so used those as motivation. I currently have one tight pair and my next goal is for them to be not tight. I know water weight affects this some, but it still works.4 -

Omg!!! Literally the funniest thing I read so far. You assume people cannot think for themselves and YOU are the only one with the intelligence to hold their hand and explain it - like they are a four year old. I give people more respect than that.
Right, so because I would actually like to help somebody figure something out, I'm a wicked smart, hilarious hand holder know it all, but since you told everyone to go buy a body fat measuring kit, with out anyone asking for your help, you are supportive.
I'm not really sure how me wanting to help somebody figure something out when they asks a question makes me that, but hey, I'll take it!

hmmm...
people actually are not that educated on weight loss vs fat loss and how to do it in a healthy manner...so yah we usually explain it...
it's not about respect it's about not being ignorant about these boards and what typically is on them.
most people don't care about bf% btw...they only care about scale weight...7 -

But should they? That's all I am saying and trying to say keep motivated don't let the scale stop you. You could be making progress but the scale is making you feel otherwise. It is often water retention that the scale will discourage some when in fact they are making progress. It's not a scale weight people are seeking Its to look and feel better.0 -

That goes both ways. Especially with Keto. If you don't know your maintenance figure, and your intake you are just as susceptible to thinking you're making progress when you are, in fact, gaining fat. Granted that's only for the first month or so but it's a pretty critical time to be ignorant to the law (not opinion) of thermodynamics.1 -
I'm not understanding some of the grief directed at the OP. Some people might find the device effective and would like to try it. What's the big deal if they do? Its their money and their weight loss and their lesson to learn if it doesn't work. Its not like he's advocating ACV pills on top of a super low calorie diet. It isn't dangerous, right? Have the ones against the device tried it and found it didn't work? I could understand the protests, then.1

I think most people have an issue with the substitution of one measuring gadget for another creating more confusion. There are a lot of variables that come into play and the real answer is thermodynamics. No way around that.3 -

What happens if your BF% stays the same? and how does that help with the look and feel? Doesn't water retention affect your BF% measurements as well? All serious questions as to why this is the best method.
