What nobody tells you about losing weight

The disgusting skin sag...
I think that if more people knew about this, and that it can be permanent damage, there would be a lot more people stopping themselves from getting as large as they do in the first place. They might just get to be a little overweight or even borderline obese and then stop themselves before they reach the skin-stretching-sagging level of obesity. Some people bounce back better than others. The problem is, that point is different for everyone so you might not know your limit until you've already done the damage.
Seems like most people don't think about or even know about the excess sagging skin aspect. They start putting on some weight and think they have plenty of time to turn it around - they just think they can put it off and lose it later and everything will just bounce right back like they'd always been fit. It doesn't work that way for most people, though.
I've been cursing myself about exactly this!
I'm slowly starting to reach the point where I see what permanent damage my obesity has done to my body. I suspect I'm far from done discovering the damage. If I could, I'd go back in time and have a serious chat with the younger me. But what's done is done. All I can do is move forward and prevent more damage.22 -
I didn't expect the huge role that SLEEP would play in my weightloss. If I go a few days without enough sleep, it suddenly gets so hard to control cravings, I start feeling like a failure, I want to give up on the whole thing and I feel like I haven't made any progress. Then I finally get a good night's rest and it isn't so hard anymore to stick to my plan. Seems like I should have put it together a long time ago. Get enough sleep!!! Staying up late for that extra 'me' time is just. Not. Worth. It.32

.....Appetite Regulation
In other research, sleep quantity and quality have been shown to play a role in regulating the hormone ghrelin, known as the hunger hormone that controls appetite. Discovered in 1999, this amino acid peptide is the only known peripherally produced and centrally acting hormone that influences the desire for food.....

These results suggest that sleep quality and quantity may contribute to weight loss in intervention-based studies designed to promote weight control in overweight/obese adult women.

Sleep curtailment has become a common behavior and an increasing number of adults report sleep complaints in modern society. Laboratory studies and multiple epidemiological studies have linked short-sleep duration and poor-sleep quality to obesity risk.

@kristamas I really need to get my sleeping under control. I run into the issue where the only time I have to hit the gym is around 11:30 pm and im usually out of there at 1 to 1:30 then I have to shower and stuff so in bed around 2 but I have to be up at 7 am for work. I have not figured out a way to fit a regular sleep schedule into my daily routine.2

Wow, great stuff here. I was surprised at the number of people who are treating me with disdain. Most of them are overweight by pre-1960's standards, but fit right in to today's mid-life diabetic group. I didn't want to be dependent on insulin, so when my A1C went pre-diabetic, I got serious and lost almost 40 pounds, and now, NO MORE MUFFIN-TOP!30

This is very interesting stuff. I certainly have noticed a marked break in a vicious cycle of poor sleep and bad eating habits. Being much slimmer has improved my quality of sleep, which in turn makes me turn less to food for comfort. I actually find going to bed without indigestion and back pain makes turning in altogether more pleasant.8 -
I was not prepared for how defensive of my new habits I would become/need to be and how judgemental of others' unhealthy habits I have become. I'm sure part of this is just being so aware since I'm logging everything I eat. But it makes me grumpy when people bring a huge box of baked sweets and cakes into my house for a weekend and smoke cigarettes in my garage! I'm biting my tongue and haven't said anything, but right now it feels like the hardest part about being healthy is being around other people who are aren't! I refuse to be guilted into eating a bunch of crap I don't want.35

In the past I lost 40 pounds. Unfortunately, I ate all the weight back +16 pounds.
I'm here to get back on track.
I've lost 5 lbs, I already feel lighter, and somehow breath better. Even with that little weight off breathing has been easier for me.
This post is truly inspirational for me, thank you for sharing.
I am really happy to be reading these posts as well. I'm starting Weight Watcher's tomorrow. Excited to start, but nervous as well. I have to... NEED to be successful this time! Has anyone here lost weight and kept it off on WW?
I lost 40 lbs on WW! It was years ago (thinks 11/12) and I have kept it off. Gained 15 back and now trying to lose 20. I never quite hit my goal weight before.3 -
I'm only down 21 lbs (99 more to go) but my cheeks have shrunk enough that when I was riding on the interstate I noticed that my helmet wasn't staying in place as well as it should. I've lost a bit of my pudgy cheeks and the helmet isn't as tight. On the one hand I'm thinking Yay!!!! It is starting to show, on the other hand, a replacement Shoei helmet isn't not in the budget right now.12

Why not say something? People won't know that they are upsetting you by smoking in your garage/bringing unhealthy food into your home unless you tell them. There are nice ways to say to people, please don't do that anymore. I'd certainly say something but I've reached an age where I'm comfortable to say things like that to people. If they don't like it, tough. They'll get over it.7 -
How embarrassed I would be about how much weight I've lost. At first I couldn't wait to tell people, but now that I've lost about 40 and have another 35 to go I avoid talking about it at all costs. Meanwhile my fiancé, bless him, tells everyone under the sun how much I've lost. The woman in the corner shop, the man in the hiking gear shop, the mailman, etc (can you tell we live in a small village) are all well versed in my diet and excercise efforts It's so sweet that he's proud of me but it makes me want to go hide under a rock!32

Haha, my husband is the same way! He'll tell anyone who'll listen that I've lost 78 pounds, whereas I've noticed that there's a certain sweet spot where people switch from "oh that's great!" to "wow that's a lot of weight!"30 -

Agree 100%. My choices are not nearly as well thought out on days when I am sleep deprived.
Insomnia is a *kitten*.

That I'd now have to sleep with a pillow between my legs cuz those uncushioned knee bones HURT! I woke up with bruises from my knees hitting against each other at night.12

Know the feeling only too well. It took me ages to work out how the mysterious overnight bruising was occuring5 -
I still think I'm bigger than what I am. I automatically reach for the bigger size when clothes shopping and I'm always surprised when they are too big. People comment so much and they can ask really intrusive questions and they think they can give advice on your diet/exercise routine etc.22

I'm just not interested in the least any more in eating for entertainment. Don't care about the new restaurant, the new cafe, the new recipe, etc. Tomorrow, for example, I do not need to go into the office and have stacks of papers to grade. I don't want to stay home (it's supposed to be sunny and low 60's) -- so where to go? I don't eat enough to take up a restaurant table for hours. I can only drink so much coffee at the cafe and don't want a brownie or cookie or whatever. I suppose I can hang out on a bench in a city park, but it's not the same thing as being at a table with hot coffee and being around other people.
Kind of a weird problem to have: it's not just a new body but a new way of living, spending my time.
Whenever the weather is decent and I don't know what to do with myself I go geocaching! Hubby and I have discovered so many neat parks and trails this way that we never would have known about. Sometimes its just a stroll, sometimes a hike, depending on our mood and how much time we have.16 -
I have lost some weight, but my brain does not register it. I only know because I fit into 3 sizes smaller clothes. I also seem to need less sleep.10
-
Oh, and that the body towel that I use after showering in the gym is not too small. It now wraps around me perfectly!18

That sounds like an impossible schedule. I'm impressed you're making it to the gym at all with so little sleep! God speed man.6 -

Wow that's fascinating. I had no idea there was so much research on it. Thanks for the links! Going to bed now!1 -
That I would ever feel like this:
I hated going to the gym. I honestly had thoughts that I could still leave whilst I already had entered through the front doors to --> It's not that I want to to I NEED to to go.

People who you hardly talked to at all will feel like commenting on your weight loss and asking what your 'secret' is.
Enjoying walking alot and having more energy.
Flirting more, what is this flirting? lol
Having to constantly buy new clothes ADDS UP. The jeans i bought only three weeks ago are now loose and keep falling down. Shirts that use to look great on me are now way too big. Ugh.
People at work staring at what you eat with great interest...even though i have told them more than once i am counting calories to eat in a calorie deficit and being active everyday.
Why do people keep thinking there is a 'secret' to weight loss? There is none!!!

No one told me I'd enjoy working out as much as I do! But I do, I love running and rediscovering my love for biking. Come summer, chances are I'll be biking to the lake on a regular basis as well to go for a swim.11

Thank you I do my best. I make it work and some days I'm completely fine but others really tired. I think that sleeping from like 2-7 would work for me if I can make sure I'm actually getting good sleep. The mornings when I'm exhausted are because I didn't get "good" sleep

I feel your pain. I work out at home but trying to find the time is so hard. I'm up every day at 5:30 for work (2 littles to get ready plus that's when I shower), out the door at ~7. Home around 5, eat, take kids outside to run around so they will actually sleep, kids bath, kids bed and then I'm done. Might start working out while they're running around and having their baths. Waiting until they sleep just pushes it back too late.6 -
When I weigh food like grapes, then go sit to eat them, then I notice there are a few yucky ones. I set them aside to weigh them & subtract them from the previous number then re-enter it on MFP. It's so automatic now.24

For many of you that have little ones in the house, you know that kids have no filter and say whatever is on their minds....so when your little one comments that your "tummy is going away", especially makes me feel really good because I want to be alive when they have kids....37

That I'd end up with too many clothes because I kept buying that cute t-shirt or pair of pants because I liked how I looked in them. But the reality is that I like how I LOOK better. But it's so hard to say no to a piece of clothing that's cute AND I look extra good in!!!15
