This is my DH's cat Charlie. Charlie was a stray who my husband found eating out of the dumpsters at his workplace. He noticed Charlie's wounded or missing eye, and worked hard to gain his trust enough to be able to trap him so we could take him to the vet. We thought Charlie was feral and prepared a room and kitty door for it attached to our garage to make a home if he wanted to stay.
Well, he wanted to stay. And he took to DH so intensely that we now doubt he was ever feral but think that he somehow lost his home and people. My DH is his sun and moon ( do you remember the Carpenters song "close to you"? I swear it plays whenever Charlie sees DH come home) and Charlie is the happiest creature I have ever known.
I've had a lot of cat companions in my life - almost all rescues or shelter cats but the bond between Charlie and DH is something spectacular to witness.
Charlie loves to roll on his back, and he loves my grandma's Afghan here almost as much as he loves DH.
Just wanted to bring you ladies a smile today. Thank You All.

Rori – so glad to hear your DH is going to have some medical tests done. I bet if feels like a weight has been lifted to have others on your team in dealing with his health now. My DH is 6’1” or so and I get nervous when he drops below 175. I take comfort in our routine of DH and the dogs – it’s not the exciting life some retirees lead, but I remind myself “These are the good old days” and it’s OK to not be busy and going somewhere all the time. How exciting to have a bicycle! Happy trails!
Katla – OK, now I see more of the hose situation. It’s your hose and you need it. I see faucet locks run from $10 to $15 or so on Amazon but might not work in your situation – might be a hazard if needed in an emergency.
We had something similar in our neighborhood last month. New fella bought kind of a run- down place at the entrance of the subdivision and really spiffed it up nicely. It was apparent he didn’t realize the little strip across the private road was part of his parcel to maintain so it became a weedy mess – thistles, tansy, etc. We puzzled how to solve this as no one really knew him – the covenants here say the yards are to be kept up- everyone is live and let live pretty much but we do keep the front lawns and areas bordering the private road looking nice. One day, DH rode his mower down and mowed that strip…it took him several hours. We wrote the guy a nice letter, saying he likely wasn’t aware that strip is his to maintain since it looked like it belonged to the folks next door but the survey stake was easily found. We were glad to mow it this time and let us know if he needs help with it in the future. And thanked him for doing such a great job with his new home, new fence, etc. We didn’t hear anything from him, but he’s keeping it mowed. Whew – neighborhood wars have been started for less than this and sometimes “no good deed goes unpunished.”
Dorrie – glad your colonoscopy ended well and Mr. H did fine with it all. Thinking of your step brother-
Kate – glad your cataract surgery is done and here’s to a speedy recovery!
Rori – you are a pistol. Allie’s Tom is going to think someone put a spell on him! I really DO want to be a fly on the wall during the deposition.
DJ - hope your back feels better!
Love the kitty pix – Egg and Mr. M are luxurious! Smoochies! Rye - great story about Charlie, he's very special!
Since the physical terrorist has been giving my neck a good workout, I’ve woken with migraines two days in a row now. So today, I really backed off on all the exercises he wanted me to do – I likely overdid it yesterday, I admit. Between that and the allergies….crossing fingers I can sleep through the night tonight. An ice pack, coffee, and a couple Excedrin migraine did the trick. But I do need lots of beauty sleep!
I feel like I won the food lottery today…was able to eat 4 things fresh from the garden! Sauteed kale with scrambled eggs for breakfast, with sliced tomatoes. Supper – I stir fried green and yellow wax beans with zucchini and a couple strips of diced bacon. YUM! I am amazed everything is so sweet. That hot sun made lots of sugar.
There are some pretty ferocious storm clouds off the coast right now….hopefully the west wind will give us a nice shower tonight and tomorrow! Keep doing that wild rain dance, PNW ladies!

Katla, would putting some sort of chain, or bicycle lock on the hose be an option so that woman couldn't uncoil it?
Chris in MA0 -
Gripe #2 & 3: The neighbor who was put in charge of the community landscape keeps using our private water to keep community landscape plants she has put in watered on a daily basis and she doesn't coil the hose up correctly to come off of the holder in an orderly way. It is a hassle for me to get out and use when I need to wash down sidewalks after the dog has made a mistake. I end up having to take most of the hose off the holder to get it to stretch out and reach what needs reaching. The messes are less than fifteen feet from the water spigot but I have to take off nearly 60 feet of tangled hose to use it. There is an in-ground automatic watering system that the President of the HOA has turned off. We pay fees for this and if it is broken, he needs to get it fixed. We shouldn't be spending additional personal dollars to pay for the community landscape plants to be watered & shouldn't be inconvenienced by a tangled hose.
Katla, why not drop her a note. It sounds like she may not realize it is a private hose. You might also post a small sign or label on the hose. What about a chain or cable type bike lock?

The sky here is clearer as is the air. It has been windy this afternoon and we have high hopes for rain in our pat of the PNW tomorrow.
Lanette, "physical terrorist"---that's great. When Jake went for P.T. he would come home and say that the Physical Therapist should be arrested for hurting him so much. When I went for P.T. after my spine surgery, the sessions were very pleasant but when I did all the exercises he prescribed in between sessions, I had much greater pain than I'd had after the surgery. But it worked. I am walking, dancing, and riding the exercise bike like I did before and the pain is gone.
Rye, your cat is awesome.
Stats for today:
*19,000 steps
*205 minutes walking Sasha and Bessie
*80 minutes working in the yard
*60 minutes walking with a friend
*85 minutes riding the exercise bike

Today i'm struggling with some of my lifelong physical disabilities. In retrospect it is easy for me to understand why I hate most all forms of exercise- if I can properly do it at all it is usually in a limited and very poor manner. You would think at 53 I'd be used to these things but to hear someone dismissively say "well you are obviously doing it wrong, what don't you even know how to ride a bike and change gears properly" just brought me to tears.
Because the answer is no, I have dyspraxia and a proprioceptive disorder and I was born legally blind in one eye AND I grew up riding a no speed bike or a three speed bike that I left in 2nd gear at all times.
Telling me my rpm should be between 60 and 100 ( or whatever) is the same as telling a color blind person to pick the red one - it doesn't mean anything to me. I don't know which disability is at fault this time but I sure don't have any clue how You people would know how many revolutions a minute you are pedaling. My best feuds would be more than ten but less than 200 and, no, I don't have any clue better than that.
Do they still make one speed bikes?
Sorry to hear all that.
They do still make one speed bicycles.
And as for cadence (rpm), you count it by counting the number of times your right foot (or left foot if you prefer) goes around in 15 seconds ... and then multiplying that number by 4. Or sometimes I'm on a long straight stretch with nothing else to do, so I'll count it for the full minute. You can also get computers that count it for you.
I have a cyclist friend who is completely blind in one eye. She has mentioned that there are certain challenges such as depth perception. I suspect she gives obstacles a wide berth.
Anyway, you're not stupid ... it's the same with learning anything. It takes time and practice.

Joyce - Mr. Mozart is too precious for words
Marti - welcome back!
Made 4 more favors for the shower. That's really all I'm going to do. In order to make any more, I would have to buy another package of the key rings (28). Jess said last night that she sent out (I thought it was more) 28 invites. You know that some people won't be coming. So I have 4 more, that's 28 in total. Then got the brownies for Jess' friend's mom ready to send to her. I realized that she's diabetic, I'd completely forgotten. Oh well..... Then went in the pool, have church tonight were I'm not only Lector but also Eucharistic Minister.
Allie - all I can think of is that song "movin on up". Whenever the kids would want to rearrange their rooms, Vince would always tell them to draw it out. So many times things just didn't fit where they thought it would fit.
Heather - gorgeous pic
Josephine - life is tough, isn't it (you can't mow...boo)....lol
spunkygal - why not use up all the organic foods by making multiple portions and then freezing some of them?
Rye - (((HUGS)))
Kate - so glad the surgery went well. Did they do both eyes or just one at a time?
DJ - thanks for the suggestions. I honestly don't care what song we walk in to. I guess it's important to Denise (or maybe Maria). I would just like to have a song referencing the two families coming together. To me, that's appropriate. As far as how many favors I'm making, to begin with remember I asked Maria not to do anything with the favors, that I would take care of it. And so what did she do? And she's very insistent that we give out two favors. I suggested I incorporate them into what I'm doing -- no go. You would think she'd return them since I had asked her not to do it, but natch she didn't do that. Even Denise said "oh ma, it's just a mirror". To me, why bother????? I made 28, mainly because that's how many key chain rings are in a package. I spoke to Jess yesterday and she said she'd sent out 28 invites, and Maria added 2 more people. You know that there are people who won't show up. Like Jess told me that she sent an invitation to my friend Carol to her NJ address and to her FL address. And she said that Denise is inviting someone from Pete's side who lives in GA, I would tend to doubt that they'd come. I made 28. If there happen to be more than 28 who come, they can just take a mirror. Honestly, I think most people would rather not even be bothered with a favor. I know I couldn't care less. I just added up how much those 28 cost me and it came to a little under $200. But I hope Denise is happy (she'd better be....lol). At least I did get Vince to go for some dancing lessons so that we don't look like total fools on the dance floor. I don't want to spend the entire evening doing just the 2-step. Please take care of yourself.
Rori - how funny it would be if Allie switched Toms blue pills.....lol But what does he use them for now that his side-kick doesn't want anything to do with him (unless things have changed)?
All the cat photos make me smile. Egg is adorable and Charlie is something else. Sorry if I forgot anyone.
Denise just called. Jess is going there this weekend to look at the place where the shower will be. Denise said that since Jess will be up there, why doesn't she pick up her dress? Evidentally, Jess was not happy about having to do this. Really, Denise was the one who wanted to go to this place. It was more expensive and they charge for shipping. Denise said that she doesn't like driving there (not that I can blame her, I wouldn't like driving there either). So why did she go there? Amanda used to work there and I'm willing to bet that Amanda and Maria talked her into it. We told her that we don't know Jess' schedule, perhaps she can't go. I told her to see if maybe someone else was going there before next Sat. and they can pick up Jess' dress and give it to Denise for me to take back to Jess'. Part of me just wants to say "why doesn't Maria just go pick up the dress. She talked you into going to that place.". But I'm not going to give any more to Maria. She's done enough!
Lanette - how sweet of you to mow that guy's property. We, too, didn't realize that we were supposed to maintain the area under the power lines. We thought the power company did! So one year we had to cut down all the weeds. And let me tell you, some of them were really thick. We had to buy this special mower. It's real heavy duty, it even cuts thru some small trees. The interesting thing is that the person who owns the lot next to ours doesn't do anything to keep his lot cleaned. Well, we do ours, we aren't going to do theirs, too. "Physical terrorist" what a hoot. I remember after Vince had an operation on his knee, the next day the physical therapist came in and started therapy. Vince screamed in pain. What was the therapists' reaction? He closed the door!

Got to the Y and did an hour of different kinds of laps. Although I grew up literally on the beach at Venice in CA where the wrestlers all hung out - Baron Leone, Gorgeous George, etc. I did not learn to swim until I was 9. I can thank my stepmom for teaching me how to swim. To me swimming is where I can be calm and think like runners seem to share about their love of running. There was hardly anyone in the pool so an added +. My own lane - just me and the water

When Christina got married, the reception was just downstairs in the church reception hall and it was just a celebration, not a big thing, cake and punch. Michelle's husband wanted a big wedding and reception though. So for all of us women walking into the reception hall, we had sunglasses on and walked with a big swag. The guys did so,etching similar. I think I was the hit because so many people did kept know this old lady had any swag and boy did I work it! But the ladies group was the bride, mother, brides maids. Of course we had 3 Moms. Her husband was kind of a orphan but not really one. When he was a young teenager, his mom, an alcoholic purposefully ran over and killed his Dad. So he didn't have any parents since Mom was in prison and Dad was dead. So he grew up in a series of foster homes. A teenage boy doesn't do well in foster homes and was eventually in two different group homes. The Moms in these 2 he considered his Moms. So when it came to the Moms listing the wedding candle, all 3 of us went up. His two lit his at the same time. Charlie's first dance with Michelle was Butterfly kisses. I just almost couldn't make it through that one. I wanted him to sing that at Christina's wedding but he wouldn't do it. But for their wedding, they both sang a song to each other. Paul can sing. Sing being in little bitty letters. He practiced on his guitar for hours getting his song perfects. He still didn't get it right at the wedding and kept singing the chorus over and over again. Finally Christina broke in and they sang the end together. They had Karaoke at Michelle's wedding and he sang the song for her and hubbies dance. That guy, Dan, was a charmer but brought to much luggAge into the marriage and it didn't work. But I sure loved that guy. He was very naive and I felt like I was another Mom to him. Well he called me his Mom many times which a lot of SIL do but to him it was genuine. Very immature man who didn't know how to spend or keep money or honesty in marriage. He knew Michelle did not want him to rein list for another tour in Afghanistan so he did it while he was over there. His excuse was that by reinlisting there it was a larger bonus.
Ok, that was a lot of convo in one paragraph. Over on my MS forum I would have had to break it up. Oh, she divorced the guy after he cheated on her. He is now divorced 3 times.
Lanette, that was a very helpful and tactful way to let the guy know it was his job and to also help. He was brought up well. Had a good Mom and Dad.
Just did my pill keepe for next week. I have a boat load of refills for next week and I am I the donut hole!!!!!! UGH! Money, money.mthey say we can't take it with us.

Yes, Rye, they do make one speed bikes. I am sorry people were rude and insensitive to you. I know it's hard to let unkind words go, but you have to. That you are out there trying speaks volumes about your character. You are most definitely not a loser.

Hi all!
Back from the gym!
Last night's expedition was amazing. The Winter Palace and the Hermitage were opened up in the evening just for us! Two coach loads of Saga passengers. First we saw the state apartments, very huge and bling. Amazing chandeliers. An amazing gold peacock clock. Then we went round the Hermitage to look at the prize paintings by Rembrandt, Leonardo, El Greco, Titian etc. Wonderful costume exhibition of old court dresses and lovely majolica ceramics. Michele - They had "wedding plates" there - apparently they would commission a portrait of their bride to be on the plate and present it with a piece of jewellery on top. Our guide was very Russian and old school - you could imagine her in the KGB. :noway:
Then we were led into a great, sky lit hall, and took our seats for a concert. The State Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg. Just for us old folks! 40 piece orchestra, with a harpist! We were sitting in front of the biggest malachite vase I have ever seen in my life! They played popular classics, like the Radetsky March.
Then we trailed down a very long staircase for champagne. Drove back through the city by night, with everything lit up, including all the bridges sparkling with lights.
When we got back to the ship they had laid on a Romanov buffet, which had every sort of food available, but I had three helpings of caviar. (not the real thing I'm sure, but still delicious) Plus shots of vodka. A brilliant ending to the evening.
Just amazing service from the ship to provide all that late at night for us.
This afternoon we are going to see 3 cathedrals, including the Spilled Blood, commemorating one of the Tsars who was assassinated on that spot.
Breakfast this morning was gorgeous fruit, followed by spinach, scrambled egg and avocado. Divine!!!!
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx

Just set off a group of cyclist on a 400 km randonnee (long distance cycling event) and will be heading back to bed for a bit shortly. We'll be supporting them in the middle of the night in about 18 hours time, so will need to get some rest before that!
Saturday -- My husband and I set off a small group of cyclist on a 400 km randonnee (long distance cycling event) in northern Tasmania at 7 am, and spent the day, and on into the night, supporting them.
We've been working on this route and planning this event for some time ... and are pleased to report that it was a success.
We had wild weather like we have not seen in a long time on the Friday night. Roaring wind, thunderstorm, and about 19 mm of rain! This was, of course, a little bit of a concern for us as we were going to set riders off first thing in the morning. The weather information promised it would all move on ... and thankfully it did. Saturday morning was a clear 8C with some wind but nowhere near what we had the night before, and the day turned out to be quite nice. The night was clear and a bit chilly, but the riders were prepared for that ... and wind had dropped to near calm so they didn't have that to contend with.
The route is what I call "Tasmanian Flat". That's different from "pancake flat" or "Manitoba flat" where there's 586 metres of climbing over 400 km. "Tasmanian Flat" is, for example, 3000 metres of climbing over 400 km.
Sunday -- My husband and I cycled our Nouveau Une permanent route and thus completed our August Petite Year Round Randonneur. It's a nice route consisting of mostly quiet roads.

Morning, all,
Rye - Tell those who are hassling you on the numbers that they can blow, kiddo. All you need to do is one more than yesterday. And guess what? You (and only you) get to pick what that one is. I struggle with depth perception according to the available light, and can't imagine it as a lifelong thing.
Allie - The blue pill thing is freaking hilarious, but as Michele pointed out, who's he got them for? Thought the other woman was out of the picture? Was he cheating on his illicit lover with someone else? Hmm. Tomcat may well be a good word for him. I was going to say, "Inquiring minds want to know," but honestly, not so much. Ew. Proud to see you making strides every day.
Rori - The chuckwagon party was a success, everyone had a good time, and we exceeded last year's funds raised by a bit. Considering we had half as many people contribute, I"m really pleased about that. The weather didn't exactly cooperate much. One wandering rainstorm about 5 p.m., then a soft rain started as people were getting there. Kept the temperatures in the 70s, when it was forecast to be in the 90s, so that part was great. We were under a pavilion, so we were able to keep the party going, but it must have rained a fair bit in the mountains, as the creek that runs through the camp was raging by 7:30 p.m. We had a great band, and everyone was stuck anyway until the water went down--so they let down their hair and had a great time. Lots of dancers, tons of fun.
By 9:15 the water was down enough so people started heading home; we were able to start clean up by 9:30 and finished up at 10. Left home at daylight yesterday, and put in nearly 20,000 steps by the time I fell over in bed last night. Lots of compliments from the boss, and that lovely feeling of a job well done, and pleased to have my first event under my belt. There are only two major events a year, this being one, and the next in March--learned a lot, and the board members who attended were very pleased, and made it known.
And, here I am back home again, jiggety-jig. Glad to be back, but very little sleep the last couple of nights, think I'm going to go lay down for a bit.
Love y'all!
