carbs...are they the enemy?

The average individual should have 0.35 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day, meaning that someone who weighs 165 pounds should consume around 60 grams per day. The recommended amount of protein increases as we get older and if we are trying to gain muscle. ACSM points out "this level of intake can generally be met through diet alone and without additional protein and amino acid supplementation."

Carbs are enemies to sadness.5

Why yes, carbs are the enemy!
In fact, to take one for the team, go ahead and send me all the carbs and I'll take care of them for you! (tongue in cheek humor).10 -
Sorry folks, its just the one thing I remembered, something had to stick from school. Way back then she thought it was important for us to know. (vit c not leaching into the fats) Domestic science teachers have gone the way of the dinosaurs in the intervening decades.1

Carbs are not the enemy. Processed carbs would be close though.12

I already posted but...Mmmmm carbs. I think im going to have a big plate of potatoes tonight at dinner. Yummy3

The carbs I processed into a delicious gazpacho were most certainly not the enemy!5

I'm married to carbohydrates in all of their forms.
For real though, I feel unsatisfied and tired if I don't eat enough carbs. I was once swayed by the low carb 'woo' but I felt awful so I'm back to my 'everything in moderation within my calories' plan.5 -
I need to go eat some carbs now. Mmmmm....0

High carbs will absolutely stall weight loss. As soon as carbs are ingested insulin is released. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. When your body needs fuel and uses glycogen (carbs) and it doesn't use them all that you have ingested then the excess is converted to fat. Instead look into a Keto diet. I am here to help if you need any assistance21

Okay, enough is enough. You keep posting this is multiple threads. Eating carbs does NOT stall weight loss. Period. Stop trying to sell your Keto consultation services.

I beg to differ. If you take two people and put them on a 2000 calorie diet. One eats high carb low fat moderate protein. The other eats high protein moderate fat and low carbs. I guarantee the diet with low carb will not only produce better weight loss, the person will also have more stable blood glucose and will also have more mental focus and a much better mood.27 -

Science begs to differ with your beliefs and I tend to stick with what science tells me over woo.8 -

Are they eating at the exact same deficit? If so, the only difference in weight loss is that the one eating low carb will lose more water weight, but the same amount of fat as the high carb person.10 -

This has been studied. Over the longer term, there is no advantage to limiting carbs.10 -

When I had gestational diabetes, and my fasting blood draw was through the roof, my dietitian was very adamant about me eating a certain number of carbs, for my health and my baby. Through the course of the day I was to consume 200 grams of carbs total to regulate my blood sugar. I lost a little weight at the end of my pregnancy because I was eating healthier, and my full term baby was 7 lbs. Carbs are our friends. Consuming excess calories is not.

All my vegan friends from the yoga center were thinner than I was. Perhaps JivanMukti Yoga has some magical anti-fat storage properties that Kripalu Yoga lacks?8 -

I find boiled potatoes to be one of the most satiating foods I can eat. I'll continue to boil them.
I tend to boil mine early in the day to save time later, and there's an argument to be made that in doing that and reheating them that I'm creating resistant starch, which is all kinds of good for my gut bacteria.
Another reason to not peel potatoes...3 -
I've lost more than 60 pounds eating 50-60% of my intake as carbs. They are my friend: confidently and securely so.
I would be sooooo miserable eating low carb.5 -
The answer to OP is no. While preference and health status are individual, carb intake does not affect weight loss in any meaningful way beyond calorie intake. I have lost 120 lbs averaging over 250 grams of carbs a day. No magical physics-defying insulin response prevented me from losing weight and they actually improve my mood and are much better at controlling my hunger than fats, which helps me stick to my calories and lose weight. Just log accurately and eat in a way that feels most natural and comfortable to you and you should be better primed for weight loss than forcing yourself to eat a certain way and finding stressful.5

I am diabetic so I do need to watch my carbs - however, they are definitely not the enemy. In fact they will help you power through workouts. Having a blood glucose meter has helped me see the direct result of putting food into my body and exercising: food is fuel!
Whole fruits contain fiber, vitamins, and other micronutrients as well as carbs. They are good for you and delicious. Even for a diabetic like me, the fiber in whole fruit slows digestion enough that a reasonable serving of fruit doesn't spike my blood glucose, and for a healthy person like you, there is no reason in the world not to eat fruit. Eating a high carb diet does not lead to weight gain - weight gain is about calories, not carbs.3 -

^ Keto woo. Not a single bit of that is true. There is ZERO net fat storage while in a caloric deficit. That is a scientific fact. Very basic physiology.8 -
Carbs are the only macro I sometimes exceed target on. (I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian. Most of my protein has carbs in it.) As I type this, I'm enjoying some homemade peach sorbet (peaches, sugar, water, and lemon juice). Over 77 lbs lost in 9 months. No hint of a stall.3

70 lbs. (and about 20% bodyfat) lost here, my carbs are set at 40% of my daily intake. And I eat grains, sugars and processed carbs on a fairly regular basis <gasp!>5
