Hi all! Glad everyone is safe so far.
Carol - Beautiful couple! You must have got married one year before my first wedding. I was only 20 years old.
Penny - Thanks for the mini holiday!
Terry - You are surely mega talented! Great to hear of the adoption and the meeting anniversary. You are blessed to have found each other. My DH and I also celebrate our meeting anniversary. Somehow it seems more important than our wedding day. It happens to be my grandson's birthday as well.
Talking of birthdays, the next one is Edie's, my middle grandchild. I happen to have a no 4 cake tin, so I've offered to make the cake. I'm doing a FROZEN theme and have ordered loads of stuff from Amazon. I asked her mum first if she approved. I'm not entirely happy with all this commercialisation of childhood and gender stereotyping, but Edie adores it all. Her mum then asked me if her present from us could be an Elsa outfit, so I've swallowed my qualms and I'm getting her one, along with a wand and tiara etc. One thing I love about Edie is, although she is very much a girl, she is incredibly tough and physically intrepid. Fearless and emotionally strong.
Made a whole orange cake this afternoon for DH. Sprouted some moth beans overnight in the IP for Indian ussal. I freeze them in 4 oz packets. Then I made a lamb tagine in the IP. I adapted a Hairy Bikers one. Looks great. Alcohol free day today - I've been falling back into my old ways and want to nip it in the bud.

Yep I have read his letters and have them in a paper clipped stack on my writing desk. Along with the piles of the other two. Maybe I will bind them up to give to them for Christmas. I don't know if Christmas will be at our home or at my middle sons this year. I don't think from the time they move in, in November it will be enough time to set up their apartment. My husband is all for not decorating this year! The humbug! My plan is to squeeze out $200 each month to save four the moving fees. That would be about $1200. Also buy a couple of boxes each month and fill to put in the spare room. Physically I am dreading moving book boxes with stairs! I'm thinking we should call the recruiting office and state a mandatory PT test at the Gossett house ASAP! Rent a truck and let those future sailors do the grunt work! I don't actually think we could do that, but its fun to ponder!
Today we are going to Astoria's food bank. Depending on what we get, will determine what I need to buy. We have done well this month! We managed to put aside money for the gas trip up to Whidbey island, pay for a couple of the meals, but most were paid by the son. Our son has lost some weight on his 7 month cruise, so I am hoping he doesn't frequent the fast food places too much. That's where sharing a home with him will do him good. Keeping the frig stocked with healthier stuff. He is already digging into the fried rice I put in the freezer for him!
I pretty much have everything of mine out of the master bathroom, and use the bathroom my son used to use. Its kind of fun not sharing counter space with husband. I haven't yet discussed being responsible for the cleaning. I'm just tired of looking at razor clippings around the sink, or cleaning the toilet! I have been stating you can't use my bathroom, and he sits down with a book laughing! Noooo I laugh! I have such a loon for a husband!
I think whatever my husband wrote to Owain, he mentally heard. My husband told me he wrote about seeing things thru. About if he quit he would have a hard time with himself. He was speaking as a Chief, more than as his father. So my son listened, and understood.
Well need to scoot! Have a blessed day all! Love ya!!

Penny: I loved the road trip! Thanks so much for the opportunity to see the place where you live.
Karen in VA: This is the first time I've been to a class reunion because I was never invited before. Many of the people I wanted to see the most were not there, but I did get to see some old friends from my neighborhood. Several travelled from a long ways away to get there. One woman I knew well from grade school days onward now lives in Yuma, AZ and came up for the reunion. One of the guys flew in from Texas. There is another event today, but I am not going to that one--a fancy sit down dinner at a winery.
Joanne: Cheri is not a student; her husband is employed by the university.
Marcelyn: Thanks for the good news about College Station. :flowerforyou:
M in OZ: Help your antibiotics along with lots of fluids. Chicken soup really does combat colds and flu symptoms, and is a good choice if you are not a vegetarian.
Carol: Congratulations on 48 years of marriage. WTG!!! We're just one year behind you.
Lisa: I'm glad to hear that you're safe and home again.
Allie: You are surely lucky to have the support of your dad. My parents have both been gone for more than 20 years.
Regarding the 50th class reunion: Some of the people who were acquaintances back in the day were at the event yesterday, including one woman I'd known since grade school and a couple more that went to Junior High with me. For the most part it seemed like the "popular" crowd showed up. Three friends I'd hoped to see were never found despite a good effort on the part of the organizer. There is another event today but I'm not planning to go. I am going to call my old best friend and share what I can. I drove by with old high school to show it to DH and he was mightily impressed by the enormity of the place. Impressed doesn't mean admiration, in this case. The school was too big, and had almost 2,000 students divided into three classes when I was there. The old hometown has built several high schools since then, and none are huge monstrosities.
Our trip home from the reunion last night included driving past hundreds of people competing in the Hood To Coast relay race. They were all wearing reflective clothing and many also had flashing lights on their backs. Teams generally travel together in some sort of minivan. One person runs while the rest of the team "rests" in the van. My niece has participated in past years and really enjoyed it but I don't think she had time off from work this time. The walkers have a separate start and we saw them while we were on our way to Salem in the morning. Traffic was nasty on the way down and easy on the way home. The state fair started yesterday and I think that was a cause of much of the traffic earlier in the day.

Hi ladies - we are safe out here on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. We've had some gentle rain but that's it. We may get some stronger rain when the storm moves some more.
Okie in Central TX6 -
Bright sunny day here in Tennessee today. Thinking of all of you in the path of Harvey. Praying for safety and protection.
Pip - Did I see you say you rode to the gym and only exercised your jaw?!?!?!
Becca - so glad you heard from your son.
Penny - What a beautiful drive!
Heather - Have you ever considered being a party planner? The Frozen birthday for Edie sounds magical. She will love it!
Happy anniversary to all of you who have them this month. If my ex and I had stayed together it would have been 47 for us on the 8th. Am I really that old?!?
Where is Kelly?
Toni in Tennessee5 -
Toni: Congratulations on 47 years of marriage!!! We're at 47 this year, too. Our anniversary was in March. :flowerforyou:2

Beth - I also have a Black and Decker battery operated weed whacker (like NYKAREN). One thing I really like about it is that the battery and I both get run down at the same time. It gives me a perfectly good excuse to rest. The battery recharges fairly quickly - it's ready to get back to work before I am.
I have Ryobi battery powered yard tools (including a lawn mower) but my husband got me several spare batteries and charging stations. Sadly.

Katla (and, indeed, NW Oregon is beautiful), I found at my reunions that 30 or 40 years and 50 pounds had greatly improved the personalities of several of the so-called popular girls from my high school days.5

Hi ladies,
Safety and mucho prayers for our friends in Texas who are being affected by Harvey. We've also been watching him on TV. The satellite pictures shows just how big he is, so we probably will get a lot of rain out of it; since, once they hit, they usually turn in a NE fashion. But, they have said it will probably stall in the region and/or could turn back over the Gulf and bounce along the shoreline. Will is working his @$$ off trying to cut all the roads. He worked all day yesterday. Last night he told use he has 257 acres of roads to cut. Using big equipment and wants to make sure he gets it back (at least on the dirt road that borders their property.
We had an uneventful trip out. Pretty cloudy with some breaks of sun.
We got the 'best' surprise of our lives last night when we got here. We had a family picture made. Tami likes doing that. So we are standing in the kitchen bunched up and Mallory said, 'smile' and 'say' "Mama's going to have a baby!" I'm standing there, I think I thought Mallory was just kidding and how that just did not seem right; then it hit me and I turn and look at them and screamed and started crying. Everything is going well. Please keep them in your prayers. Showed us pictures of the fetus and explained everything to us. Took Louis a lot longer to see it than it did for me. Bloodwork is looking good. This was their 3 attempt at IVF and this was a pure miracle. She has lost the first two. Said that one procedure they did was to 'scrape' the inside of her uterus before implanting the 'already' forming baby in the dish hurt so bad and they do it without any anesthesia. Nurse told her that most women go screaming, cursing, and crying. I guess maybe the scraping was so that it would stick and start forming the placenta ... which on the picture looked like tiny bubbles. I am SOOOO excited for them all.
She has to have a huge shot in her backside, right over her butt-cheeks, every night at 8:30pm. Both Will and Mallory take turns giving her the shot. The nurse drew the area that they need to give it so they don't hit a vessel. Mallory did that one night and freaked out; but, things were all ok; she actually had not put the medicine in; so Will gave it to her. The way they told her was to write on her backside ... "You're going to be a big sister!" They haven't told some family members, including our son and had taken down her FB page so that they would not get tagged and have them 'find out about it that way'. Especially, since Jenn stays on it 24/7/365. Takes it to bed with her (literally). I am beyond being 'thrilled'. Asked her to send it to my phone and show my sisters the video when we get together for our Beach Trip next month. I don't know if anybody else cried; but, Will had this huge grin on his face. I know I asked you before; but, PLEASE PRAY FOR TAMI!!!! And Will and Mallory. This has been a year in the making. Last August, when we came out, they said they had to go pick up something and they drove to Jackson to have it done. I know she'll have to go get blood work on a regular basis. Besides the shots in her butt, that look like 'horse needles', has to take some other kind of medication. Has to brush her teeth with a toothpaste with fluoride in it (so she is brushing her teeth with a child's toothpaste. Did I say I was 'dancing with happy feet'??????
Becca - The letter was beautiful! He has made a great choice and he will do very well at what he will be doing. Yep, being in the service is a big commitment. He's be a 'man' when he comes home at Christmas. I'd make a scrapbook, but, I would keep it for myself. Maybe you could copy the letters you write to him and also put that in it. Write one asking what he is doing, if he likes it, and then put his return letter behind it, in chronological order.
Allie - Did the owner of the condo take your offer or did you counter-offer his refusal? Either way, I know you kept a cool head and did the right thing. Yeah, it's yours and now you can have fun decorating a place that doesn't have any of TomCat in it. Does the entire condo place have the rule of 'no pets'; or, was that just the owner's rule? TomCat's 'attorney' wanting to go to court on Monday ... that couldn't happen, unless y'all don't celebrate Labor Day (which is a Federal holiday). What 'was' she thinking? Absolutely nothing. She has probably filed a Motion to Suppress ... because TomCat knows you are asking for an equitable split and he might be trying to 'hide' marital assets. I know you hate that it has been put off ... she probably IS stalling and was hopeful that she could get all this suppressed to lessen the amount you are going to be 'entitled' to have awarded to you. It'd be funny if he has to pay you a % of all property his owns, the house there, the place in FL, his retirement, and bank accounts ... or at least have to pay you the sum of the money you have earned and was put in a joint (or his account, personally) as part of the settlement.
Welcome to all the Newbies. I've enjoyed seeing the pictures that are posted. It lets me 'go to places vicariously though each of you! Painted rocks are all the 'craze' here, too. They liked my painted rocks that I made for them. I also made some for Trey and his girls (including DDnL#1

Lenora: You are brilliant at understanding and explaining legal matters.
Our friend Cheri lives in College Station, TX. I just saw a report on the weather channel that they may be in for some damage there. Sending good thoughts for safety to her family and all of her College Station neighbors.

Well we brought home a carload of goodies from the food bank! We recd salmon, peppered meat strips for fajitas, tri-layered bean dip (bad), doughnuts ( half are in freezer), lemon pie (cut up and just tweo pieces in frig, rest freezing), potatoes ( those finger shaped kind), bread (gluten free wheat), pita crackers ( for awfully yummy looking bean dip), asparagus, Italian looking filled mushrooms ( those large kind!), balsamic dressing yum!, and other stuff! The guys running it today were so nice, and its a very humbling experience. I am so thankful!
Tonight is lasagna hamburger helper with corn on cob, and bread. I am having diced tomatoes in my serving. The hamburger helper box is $1, as well as the hamburger! Everything else is food bank. Last time we had it, I put cottage cheese on my plate, and ended up finishing a tub in about two days! I love the taste of it, and hadn't had out in awhile! So no buying that for a couple months! Next month its some yogurts! Dairy is a special treat! With some feral mixed in drizzled with honey! Yummy!
OK OK, stop with the exclamation marks Rebecca....... Heehee.

Happy for my life

Swam for an hour today. 2000 meters. I feel ready for Oct 1 charity swim (only one mile).
Nothing much up here, the job I want is still not officially 'listed' so even though I've informally interview with all parties I can not yet officially apply. Frustrating. Being unable to drive means many jobs I just can't take because I can't get to them on my own, but this one is walking distance (a long walk, but doable in any weather. So I really would love to get it.
Hot Flashes Very bad last night and today. I think I've tried every home remedy (soy isoflavins, black cohosh, evening primrose oil, weight loss, yam progesterone cream, flaxseed) and avoid purported triggers like alcohol. -- but if there are any you know of I missed, let me know- I'll try. Dr said no HRT for me tho - so natural remedies are all I can try.
We are too far NW for hurricane worries, may get some extra rain but no biggie here. We are worried about some family though.
M in Oz: I'm probably not what many would consider a photographer- my pieces are almost exclusively abstracts. Here is an example of my recent stuff. I'm hopeless at self promoting, though, and so I've only sold a couple of pieces.

Carol Happy Anniversary
Rye gorgeous!
Went to State Fair today with son. Didn't take any pictures just had fun. The lemon curd, chocolate, cookie sundae at the dairy building was to live for. Hands down best thing I ate at the Fair. I also got a Chevy T-shirt to wear in my new Chevy and a T shirt promoting the new show The Gifted. It will be fun to wear when I sub. I was hoping the rain would cut down on the crowds. It did help some. We fortunately missed the brunt of it.

I am sitting in bed, relaxing.. had a lovely day.. my co worker Mary and I went down to lavender pond farm... the lavender has gone by but still a beautiful place. and I was good I didn't buy anything...
Then we went to see our old co-worker she has a little cart and does grilled cheese, and we had one of those, came home and took an hour nap, then went up to my dads ,My son and I hoed out one closet, I dread the day we have to go through that whole hose.. it would probably take 2 industrial size dumpsters to clean it out..
now I am home and drinking Ice water... a beautiful breeze coming through the windows..4 -
Becca: You did well at bringing home nutritious food. Salmon is a great item. We're planning on a piece of salmon for tonight's dinner ourselves.
Rye in TX: Glad you're doing okay with the weather situation. I saw some pretty scary stuff on the Weather Channel today. Stay safe. :flowerforyou:
Pip: Your Airstream looks wonderful. I'm trying to imagine it with your dogs and hope you'll take some photos of them inside to share.
Yesterday we went to my 50th class reunion. I saw a few old friends that I hadn't seen in decades and enjoyed it. There were several I hoped to see that weren't there and I hope to track down at least one of them. This particular woman went through all twelve grades with me, and we even moved across town in time to go to the same Junior High. She's a musician and others have seen her around. I'm hoping I'll be lucky enough to find her.

Hello all, I'm sort of new to forums, although I've been on MFP off, and on for a while now. So, I shall introduce myself here, where I feel I belong. I'm going to be 53 in September, and started MFP "this time" as a way to keep a food diary, to see what way making me so sick. Well, it seemed to be everything!
So, I'll be 53 soon, my hair is all gray, and I was lucky enough to go through mentalpause early(in my 40's), thanks to my mom's genes. I'm 5' 4 & 3/4" tall and currently weigh 157.6 pounds. I live a very sedentary lifestyle, but would very much like to change that. I live in the Northeast, so it's hard to get outside in the winter months, and live in a small town, with one gym that is so expensive I don't know how they stay in business.
I've had to make some changes in my diet due to a hiatal hernia diagnosed in May, and my gastroenterologist wants me to loose weight, quit smoking, and no coffee! I've done pretty good, I've lost 22 pounds, I've stopped eating after 6pm, no more snacks( my midnight munchies), I try to go for a walk every evening, and use the push mower, instead of the rider. I would like to do more, and I think it will help to see other women my age getting active, and making healthy, reachable goals. So, I will start by make a few goals myself, posting them here, and asking for a kick in the butt!!
1: Walk at the very least one mile, every other day.
2: NO SUGAR!
3: Eat more fruits & veggies, and less bread & pasta.
4: Drink more water!!!
5: Get out my healthy-strider, and use it for 30 minutes, minimum of 3 times a week.
I think 5 is good to start, I really want to accomplish these, so I don't want to overwhelm myself!
I would love to hear some opinions, and welcome new friends!7 -
Reporting in from College Station, TX here! We are okay. Lots of rain with flooding and winds. Seems it may be worse tomorrow so will see. So very glad my son came inland from Houston. He may be here for several days as Houston has been hit hard. To think I left the hurricanes back when I lived in Florida!

Rain totally manageable here. Three tornadoes within 10 miles of us but we are okay. The storm is lessening and going a bit north of what they predicted but it's still early. So far the flooding has been minor with only one creek going out of it's banks, the bayous all holding strong. Looks like we are in for 3 to 4 days of heavy rain and a full 10 days of rain events daily. Going to be a long week....
In other news.... wait, there isn't any other news from here.
Fighting boredom in Houston
Marcelyn
P.S. - Interesting that everyone keeps saying Houston is hit hard and it's terrible down here. Honestly it's a LOT less than we've seen in the past. There is some flooding but not much. Of course we have days to go but right now all is pretty much good. The southwestern side of town seems to have been hit hardest and our area to the northwest. But honestly, it's pretty good considering.5 -

Becca, Cheri, Michele, Joyce, Carol, Gloria, and Dana - Not that any of you would say anything on FB about DDnL#2 being pregnant; please don't post anything there. There are people that have not told and would like for it not to be on there. Will doesn't have a FB account, DDnL has 'deactivated' hers, only checking it for school and church things because 'if' Will had his way they'd both not have one. He is extremely 'private' and unfortunately our other DnL doesn't know how to 'not' put her 'drama' on it. He prefers to tell DOS in his 'own sweet time'. We won't even tell them. Thanks.
Usually it is the worst on the right (NE side of a hurricane for winds and rain). Looks like we might not get any, or much anyway, rain or wind here. Will has worked like a dog trying to get all the roads mowed before the rain comes, if it does. Needs to get it done, or most of it, before hunting season.
Prayers for all who have been affected by this storm. It sure looked huge (like Andrew and Katrina). Oh, it was Andrew that did a direct hit on South Florida, right below Miami ... Middle sister said if there was another one predicted to hit South FL, she'd be in GA before any mandatory evacuations.
We're having a good time. Will now has internet service (by satellite and that is nice).
Lenora2 -
Rye - wow, great photos. You are VERY talented. Hope the job works out for you!
Katla - glad you could make it to the reunion-you had a big class! We always joked we had 99 1/2 seniors (one of the gals was pregnant). I think at least a third of them have passed away, seems like a couple more each year.
Becca - so hoping your Whidbey plans work out. Lots of goodies at the food bank, wow! And the letter from Owain - just wonderful
Lenora - crossing fingers for Tami everything works out in the new baby department. What a surprise indeed!
Pip - Bette is the bomb. Your pups will be very happy traveling along! How thrilling to have the awning and cushions done! Hope you get that flat tire bike situation fixed once and for all. Geeze!
Penny - thank you for posting for your drive, the ferry, and the trip to your house. You live in a wild and beautiful country and I can see how you love it so much.
Okiewoman - glad you won't get hit with Harvey. Hope to hear more from our Texas ladies, they are in my prayers.
Happy anniversary to everyone! Birthdays too! My DH and I are newlyweds at 40 years this past February, lol.
Someone mentioned Leigh - I think she was going back to Oregon for a month so I hope she pops in here.
OK ladies, sorry this is so quick. More catch up tomorrow!
Hugs,
Lanette
