Marcelyn I'm sorry you are going to have water damage at one of your homes. Thank you for keeping us posted. Those photos of 40 feet of water covering the bayou are unbelievable. I hope you keep dry where you are.
Barbie and Lanette I always want to find a good home for my treasures, too. But I have the very best seasoned cast iron skillet I found at Goodwill. And a pair of wonderful Sanita shoes (like Danskos) that still had the tags on them from Goodwill. If the people who donated them had tried to find the perfect home for those treasures, I wouldn't have them!
I have had several conversations with people about retirement lately, and so many of them are bored and want to go back to work, or are in the process of going back to work. It seems that these people wanted to retire, and then once they were retired, within a couple of years they wanted to go back to work...feeling bored, or gaining too much weight, or feeling useless, or not liking being on a fixed budget...do any of you retired ladies care to comment? I can cut back on my work schedule to as little as 2 days each month as I get older if I want to. The closer I get to retirement, the more I think having that option is incredibly fortunate. I could work just enough to cover the "extras" for as long as I wanted to (and was competent, LOL!)

Rye in TX: I also wear my shoes for many years. When they make my feet or back hurt, they're done & donated unless they're too worn to donate. :ohwell:
Marcelyn: Sending good thoughts for your personal safety and minimal or no damage to your property. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I'm glad that rest is solving your facial concerns. I guess the old phrase "beauty sleep" has truth to it.
Lisa: The Columbia River ran very deep for weeks after last winter's snow and ice storms. Luckily our home was not in danger from anything but raccoons and that problem has been solved. Now the river is at a lower level than we saw any time last summer. :ohwell:
Lanette: I'm glad you're doing well with your health issues. My solution to hot weather cooking is cold salads and grilling meat outside. That way the heat from cooking doesn't get into my house. If I want to boil potatoes or macaroni for salads I do it early in the morning. :flowerforyou:
Chris in MA: Sending good thoughts and prayers your way. (((HUGS)))
Heather: Telling your sons about your difficult childhood takes a great deal of inner strength. You constantly amaze me with your courage and openness. Could your DIL, the psychologist, be of any help with telling the boys about this?
I bought my son and daughter animal handpuppets when they were children. They were handmade by a wonderful woman from Eugene, Oregon, where we lived when my son was little & before my daughter was born. She made them with all the positive attributes of a stuffed toy, but also a functional puppet. Today I bought four handcrafted puppets directly from this same woman at Portland's Sunday Market! One is for each of my grandchildren and one is for the baby to come. This is putting a big smile on my face. There are more than 40 years between the first purchase and today.

Saying hello! A lovely cool day here in Virginia but I do know somewhere you are wet and hopeful rain will stop.
I bought a food scale today and also a rotten watermelon. Had to throw the melon away as I did not feel like packing it up and asking for refund. I made some marinated chicken (soaked in Italian dressing) this evening and then microzapped some carrots. It was so good. I weighed both items on the new scale and I had to add to both portions to get the servings! I am feeling I can really do this today. Take care.

Katla I LOVE the handpuppet story. It makes my heart smile. I hope you post pictures of any of them you may have!
Josephine You CAN do this. As Rori would say, "we can do this!"

Katla: That's ah-maazing to have found the same puppet maker all these years later. Clearly, the public must appreciate her work to have kept her in business all this time. Hope your grands appreciate the gifts.
Karen in VA: I'm also running an unofficial survey of my retired friends and co-workers. None have felt like returning to work from where they retired. Some have moved on to less stressful jobs, or very engaging volunteer gigs.
I'm gobsmacked by the images of Houston and S. Texas under all that water. Marcelyn: Take care. So glad to hear you have a home on a hill.
My little Hawaii condo which has been listed for all of 3 weeks got a cash offer today. It's a bit low, but my agent says this woman really wants it, so a counter offer will be made. The prospective buyer is a single woman, whose kids are all in college or grad school on the mainland. She is relocating back to Honolulu after many years living in Texas. She has battled breast cancer for 2 years, and my place has the advantage of being located near one of the best medical facilities on the island. Cross your fingers for all concerned.
Stay well, friends. We can do this.

Karen in VA, At one time I had a conversation with one of my colleagues where we agreed that we'd want to work until we were 75 (mandatory retirement age where I worked). A few years later, a woman who was younger than I, retired and I asked her why and she said that she "just knew" it was time, A year later, I walked into a staff meeting and realized that I was no longer interested in meeting the huge challenges that just weeks before had been exciting for me. As I explored my retirement options (money, etc.), someone used the the phrase "quality of life" and I realized that I wanted to not deal with the stress of my job and wanted the peace of making my decisions on a one day at a time basis. If I had worked a few years more, I would have received about 200 dollars a month more than I'm getting now. I have never regretted the decision to retire. I told people that I planned to spend my retirement knitting and watching TV and for awhile I did just that. New horizons have continued to open up to me with each passing year. I don't even want to discuss the work I used to do. I've moved on to a new and exciting chapter. I retired at age 58 and am now 71 years old. I love wearing casual clothes and being free to do the things that interest me.

Karen - – ah, retirement. Very exciting to think about and now’s the time to start planning.
Your situation sounds ideal. Things to consider tho – will this part-time job be subject to different hours, different supervisor, different rules. In case it doesn’t work out, what will happen then?
What your friends said about being bored, needing money, gaining weight, feeling useless… can all be true! Don’t have to be, but can be.
Have you considered why you want to retire? And how you will fill your days and time when you don’t have to head to work on a set schedule so many days per week? We don’t have grandkids, but I’ve heard comments that gals retired to spend more time with the grands but those plans didn’t materialize. A GF of mine stuck it out in a county job for years under a wack-o supervisor for the retirement and insurance. Shortly after she retired, her DH was diagnosed with prostate cancer so her days are now filled dealing with his treatments, depression. He has become a recluse. Her dreams of travel and doing fun things are gone.
My DH was already a recluse and had chronic illness which is often painful and will likely become disabling, so I had considered that when I retired.
I will say one of the deciding factors for me was wanting more time off and working fewer hours, but there came a point where we needed my pension and in order for that to kick in, I needed to leave my job.
I have postponed taking social security – my pension was just about enough to cover our monthly bills along with DH’s retirement and SS. In this case, getting a part-time job from mid-October to this past April was adequate along with savings to keep things moving along and keep insurance paid. We’re frugal, on Medicare, don’t travel, have some savings in case the house needs a new roof, new HVAC (looks like some of it will be spent on a new deck next year.)
I didn’t have the job when I retired… my guardian angel took over and put me in the right place at the right time.
Being an ENTJ who plans things to the nth degree, I started budgeting for retirement early on, working through many scenarios so there wouldn’t be nasty surprises once I turned in my retirement paperwork.
All that being said, winter and endless rainy days will arrive this fall, and I’ll be looking for excuses to get out of the house a couple days a week. Actually working again? I’m not sure- my Social Security should be kicking in this fall – I’ll contact the gal I worked for this spring and see if they’ll be needing me again. If not, right now I don’t see myself actively seeking a job if I don’t need the $$. So I plan to spend more time at the gym or doing things with GF's (many of them have been laid up with medical problems! Back surgery, hip replacement, other back problems - my younger friends are still working )
Sorry for the epistle. Hope this helps! HUGS!

Rye here in north central Texas, not too far from DFW:
All is well in this part of state. Crazy weather, lol raining cats and dogs one minute, sunny and seemingly clear 20 minutes later, overcast drizzle 30 minutes after that! But nothing in my neck of the woods to be concerned about. A benefit here, it is about 10 degrees cooler than last week.
Bodyweight strength training today. Ugh. Glad that's over til Tuesday. (Yay)
We gave space in our living room to a friend who needed a home for her grandmothers upright piano. It has been here for more than three years. It finally left today. I feel like celebrating getting so much space back in my living room! The room really does feel so much larger now.
Stay well all! And dry, if possible!

Just checking in before bed...
Gloria[[/b]- to answer your question about my chainmaille jewelry, it is made with jump rings. You can google jump rings to see what they look like. Each one is opened and linked to another. How it is linked determines the pattern. The bracelet I'll make for the shop next has over 600 rings that each have to be opened, linked then closed. I find it very relaxing.
Dana, glad to hear your husband is ok
Rori, sending good thoughts your way
Penny, must have been the day for working on porches. I spent a lot of my day scraping so we could continue to paint ours
Marcelyn, sorry to hear you have water in your basement but glad to hear you and all from TX are ok
Lanette, I'm going to give the exercise bands a try. We have them in the gym at work
Chris, enjoy your vacation and send pics
New members, welcome. Can't believe I'm saying that as I'm new too!!
Well off to bed and my book. My favorite time of the day.

Welcome Diane and congrats on your continuing success!
Someone please explain what a bayou is. Read about them, sung about them but don't really know what they are.
Gloria in WA1 -
Terry in VT - a belated Welcome! I am kind of stuck on the dumbbells for arm exercises but these bands... oh lala. I needed to strengthen my upper back and didn't have a lat machine home so the PT suggested these and I think they'll do the trick - good for triceps too.
Good luck! Enjoy your book!
Lanette1 -
I would've taken a pic of the watermelon, along with the sticker that is normally on them. I would've marched to the refund/ info area along with my receipt and asked for a refund, ( the next time you go to the store).
But that's just me!

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Friends,
Joyce, isn’t it funny how we remember people from our youth the way they looked back when. I had a cousin that was an absolute hunk and saw him as an adult at my mother’s funeral. He was even better looking grown but can’t imagine what he looks like in his 60s now.
Diane, a huge congrats on the weight. It is often difficult for many of us to keep up here but we do the best we can. It’s a group that I couldn’t live without. Just skim when you get behind and skip some when you must. It’s all good.
Penny, sorry the rain delayed you from your carpentry work. You’ll have to show us the finished product.
NYKaren, your niece is lucky to have the two of you and I’m sure she is enjoying this trip.
Allie, did I understand that Tom paid for the house and basically you paid all the other bills and food? Wow, he should have a sh$tpot full of money stashed somewhere.
Barbie, I hope your new shoes are comfy. I’m the same way about getting rid of something that still has some life left in it.
Marcelyn, glad to hear you are still dry so far. Thinking of you and all the people in the rain soaked areas. (((Hugs)))
Kwtlw, welcome. This is a great place for support and information so come often. Please sign each post with the name you want to be called and a location is great too.
Lisa, I never tire of seeing what Egg is up too. Thanks.
Lanette, your information on the bladder and coffee drinking was very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I also found it interesting about your purchasing habits and “hoarding habits”. Lol Just kidding on the last one.
Chris, I hope things are working out satisfactorily. Was good to hear from you.
KarenVA, that is terrific that you have such options to cut back how much you work. I was worried about being bored when I retired but I love it. It gives time to do things I could never do before. One of those is exercise.
Katla, how wonderful that you were able to buy hand puppets from the same lady. I hope all the grands enjoy them.
Rori, I hope the offer on your condo works out to your satisfaction. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I love all the photos! Thank you all for sharing. I’m still praying for all those in the rain soaked areas of Texas and adjoining states. I guess there is some other tropical storm that will come up the East Coast this week so we will get some rain but nothing like from Harvey. Stay safe everyone.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

Good evening ladies! I had an interesting day....didn't amount to much of anything, but wow!!! I'm gong to be a Grammy!!!! . My daughter, who has actually been my step-daughter from the time she was 4, just visited us with this amazing news! We(she, obgyn, and myself), never thought this would happen, as she doesn't ovulate every month, never has, but two visits to her obgyn confirmed she definitely is. She is due in April, and my poor girl ONLY went to the doctors because she was throwing up every morning
I made sure she called my mom, both of them! I was adopted, and my mom died when I was 14. I met my biological mom in my late twenties, and we are very close, plus I have a step-mom. AND, I asked my (step) daughter if she told her mother, very touchy subject, but no. I was pregnant twice, and miscarried both, then divorced. I put my dreams of having a little tom-boy of a daughter behind me, and moved on. To make a long story short, I got my tom-boy, and raised her to have an opinion, and be assertive.
I am just so tickled that I'm gong to be a Grammy, i still get all leaky eyes just thinking about watching my little peanut grow into a mother, so I spend much of the day on the phone with everyone! THEN...(this is sort of funny) I decided to get my yarn out, and start crotcheting. Well, my ADD got the best of me, and I then decided our down pillows needed a good fluffing, and freshening up, so in the dryer they went with tennis balls, and Febreeze. An hour later, the hubby comes home, and I go out to get the pillows, thinking he'll be so happy, because he was just complaining about his pillow being flat. I opened the dryer door, and stood there saying " oh no...oh no...oh no...". Hubby comes running into the laundry room, (oh, is he going to be pi..mad!) Feather were EVERYWERE! In my hair, the whole room, and all over everything! I think my hubby may have peed a little, he was laughing so hard! Unfortunately, we now need to take the dryer apart, and vacuum every last feather out, oh well....live & learn! Guess it's off to Amazon to shop for new pillows...who knew there were so many feather in those two pillows!!!! Any Crafters out there have ideas on what to do with all these feathers???
It's good to see everyone's doing well, during this destrutive hurricane. ~Tiffanie7 -
