I have had several conversations with people about retirement lately, and so many of them are bored and want to go back to work, or are in the process of going back to work. It seems that these people wanted to retire, and then once they were retired, within a couple of years they wanted to go back to work...feeling bored, or gaining too much weight, or feeling useless, or not liking being on a fixed budget...do any of you retired ladies care to comment? I can cut back on my work schedule to as little as 2 days each month as I get older if I want to. The closer I get to retirement, the more I think having that option is incredibly fortunate. I could work just enough to cover the "extras" for as long as I wanted to (and was competent, LOL!)
Karen - – ah, retirement. Very exciting to think about and now’s the time to start planning.
Your situation sounds ideal. Things to consider tho – will this part-time job be subject to different hours, different supervisor, different rules. In case it doesn’t work out, what will happen then?
What your friends said about being bored, needing money, gaining weight, feeling useless… can all be true! Don’t have to be, but can be.
Have you considered why you want to retire? And how you will fill your days and time when you don’t have to head to work on a set schedule so many days per week? We don’t have grandkids, but I’ve heard comments that gals retired to spend more time with the grands but those plans didn’t materialize. A GF of mine stuck it out in a county job for years under a wack-o supervisor for the retirement and insurance. Shortly after she retired, her DH was diagnosed with prostate cancer so her days are now filled dealing with his treatments, depression. He has become a recluse. Her dreams of travel and doing fun things are gone.
My DH was already a recluse and had chronic illness which is often painful and will likely become disabling, so I had considered that when I retired.
I will say one of the deciding factors for me was wanting more time off and working fewer hours, but there came a point where we needed my pension and in order for that to kick in, I needed to leave my job.
I have postponed taking social security – my pension was just about enough to cover our monthly bills along with DH’s retirement and SS. In this case, getting a part-time job from mid-October to this past April was adequate along with savings to keep things moving along and keep insurance paid. We’re frugal, on Medicare, don’t travel, have some savings in case the house needs a new roof, new HVAC (looks like some of it will be spent on a new deck next year.)
I didn’t have the job when I retired… my guardian angel took over and put me in the right place at the right time.
Being an ENTJ who plans things to the nth degree, I started budgeting for retirement early on, working through many scenarios so there wouldn’t be nasty surprises once I turned in my retirement paperwork.
All that being said, winter and endless rainy days will arrive this fall, and I’ll be looking for excuses to get out of the house a couple days a week. Actually working again? I’m not sure- my Social Security should be kicking in this fall – I’ll contact the gal I worked for this spring and see if they’ll be needing me again. If not, right now I don’t see myself actively seeking a job if I don’t need the $$. So I plan to spend more time at the gym or doing things with GF's (many of them have been laid up with medical problems! Back surgery, hip replacement, other back problems - my younger friends are still working )
Sorry for the epistle. Hope this helps! HUGS!

Rye here in north central Texas, not too far from DFW:
All is well in this part of state. Crazy weather, lol raining cats and dogs one minute, sunny and seemingly clear 20 minutes later, overcast drizzle 30 minutes after that! But nothing in my neck of the woods to be concerned about. A benefit here, it is about 10 degrees cooler than last week.
Bodyweight strength training today. Ugh. Glad that's over til Tuesday. (Yay)
We gave space in our living room to a friend who needed a home for her grandmothers upright piano. It has been here for more than three years. It finally left today. I feel like celebrating getting so much space back in my living room! The room really does feel so much larger now.
Stay well all! And dry, if possible!

Just checking in before bed...
Gloria[[/b]- to answer your question about my chainmaille jewelry, it is made with jump rings. You can google jump rings to see what they look like. Each one is opened and linked to another. How it is linked determines the pattern. The bracelet I'll make for the shop next has over 600 rings that each have to be opened, linked then closed. I find it very relaxing.
Dana, glad to hear your husband is ok
Rori, sending good thoughts your way
Penny, must have been the day for working on porches. I spent a lot of my day scraping so we could continue to paint ours
Marcelyn, sorry to hear you have water in your basement but glad to hear you and all from TX are ok
Lanette, I'm going to give the exercise bands a try. We have them in the gym at work
Chris, enjoy your vacation and send pics
New members, welcome. Can't believe I'm saying that as I'm new too!!
Well off to bed and my book. My favorite time of the day.

Welcome Diane and congrats on your continuing success!
Someone please explain what a bayou is. Read about them, sung about them but don't really know what they are.
Gloria in WA1 -
Terry in VT - a belated Welcome! I am kind of stuck on the dumbbells for arm exercises but these bands... oh lala. I needed to strengthen my upper back and didn't have a lat machine home so the PT suggested these and I think they'll do the trick - good for triceps too.
Good luck! Enjoy your book!

I would've taken a pic of the watermelon, along with the sticker that is normally on them. I would've marched to the refund/ info area along with my receipt and asked for a refund, ( the next time you go to the store).
But that's just me!

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Friends,
Joyce, isn’t it funny how we remember people from our youth the way they looked back when. I had a cousin that was an absolute hunk and saw him as an adult at my mother’s funeral. He was even better looking grown but can’t imagine what he looks like in his 60s now.
Diane, a huge congrats on the weight. It is often difficult for many of us to keep up here but we do the best we can. It’s a group that I couldn’t live without. Just skim when you get behind and skip some when you must. It’s all good.
Penny, sorry the rain delayed you from your carpentry work. You’ll have to show us the finished product.
NYKaren, your niece is lucky to have the two of you and I’m sure she is enjoying this trip.
Allie, did I understand that Tom paid for the house and basically you paid all the other bills and food? Wow, he should have a sh$tpot full of money stashed somewhere.
Barbie, I hope your new shoes are comfy. I’m the same way about getting rid of something that still has some life left in it.
Marcelyn, glad to hear you are still dry so far. Thinking of you and all the people in the rain soaked areas. (((Hugs)))
Kwtlw, welcome. This is a great place for support and information so come often. Please sign each post with the name you want to be called and a location is great too.
Lisa, I never tire of seeing what Egg is up too. Thanks.
Lanette, your information on the bladder and coffee drinking was very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I also found it interesting about your purchasing habits and “hoarding habits”. Lol Just kidding on the last one.
Chris, I hope things are working out satisfactorily. Was good to hear from you.
KarenVA, that is terrific that you have such options to cut back how much you work. I was worried about being bored when I retired but I love it. It gives time to do things I could never do before. One of those is exercise.
Katla, how wonderful that you were able to buy hand puppets from the same lady. I hope all the grands enjoy them.
Rori, I hope the offer on your condo works out to your satisfaction. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I love all the photos! Thank you all for sharing. I’m still praying for all those in the rain soaked areas of Texas and adjoining states. I guess there is some other tropical storm that will come up the East Coast this week so we will get some rain but nothing like from Harvey. Stay safe everyone.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

Good evening ladies! I had an interesting day....didn't amount to much of anything, but wow!!! I'm gong to be a Grammy!!!! . My daughter, who has actually been my step-daughter from the time she was 4, just visited us with this amazing news! We(she, obgyn, and myself), never thought this would happen, as she doesn't ovulate every month, never has, but two visits to her obgyn confirmed she definitely is. She is due in April, and my poor girl ONLY went to the doctors because she was throwing up every morning
I made sure she called my mom, both of them! I was adopted, and my mom died when I was 14. I met my biological mom in my late twenties, and we are very close, plus I have a step-mom. AND, I asked my (step) daughter if she told her mother, very touchy subject, but no. I was pregnant twice, and miscarried both, then divorced. I put my dreams of having a little tom-boy of a daughter behind me, and moved on. To make a long story short, I got my tom-boy, and raised her to have an opinion, and be assertive.
I am just so tickled that I'm gong to be a Grammy, i still get all leaky eyes just thinking about watching my little peanut grow into a mother, so I spend much of the day on the phone with everyone! THEN...(this is sort of funny) I decided to get my yarn out, and start crotcheting. Well, my ADD got the best of me, and I then decided our down pillows needed a good fluffing, and freshening up, so in the dryer they went with tennis balls, and Febreeze. An hour later, the hubby comes home, and I go out to get the pillows, thinking he'll be so happy, because he was just complaining about his pillow being flat. I opened the dryer door, and stood there saying " oh no...oh no...oh no...". Hubby comes running into the laundry room, (oh, is he going to be pi..mad!) Feather were EVERYWERE! In my hair, the whole room, and all over everything! I think my hubby may have peed a little, he was laughing so hard! Unfortunately, we now need to take the dryer apart, and vacuum every last feather out, oh well....live & learn! Guess it's off to Amazon to shop for new pillows...who knew there were so many feather in those two pillows!!!! Any Crafters out there have ideas on what to do with all these feathers???
It's good to see everyone's doing well, during this destrutive hurricane. ~Tiffanie7 -

Hi folks! Just checking in. We are okay here in our Texas home. Flooding is bad everywhere across our region. We have a daily check-in post on Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends. So far everyone is okay - except I haven't heard from my cousins down south in Lolita, TX. Trying to reach other people in their area.
Water is creeping up from the creek behind us - but that's not unusual. Our home is on higher ground - and is. Stilt house - so our living space is 12 feet above ground.
Latest model data agrees #Harvey will slightly re-emerge over the Gulf Tues am, gain some strength then move N towards Houston/Galveston. Ugh!
Prayers appreciated.

Rori, praying for the best outcome on your condo for all concerned. Keep us posted.

Did an hour of Body by Bethany DVD (yoga). Depending on when Jess plans to leave (I would like to be here when she does), tentatively I've planned to do on segment of Beach Body Sample DVD, hold my plank, then take the extremepump class.
Penny - lovely pics. Those strawberries look SOOO good, I just want to grab one and have it!
Heather - now that you're rolling in the dough, you can easily afford to come to the US and cook for us all!!!!
After exercise, went to WalMart. What a good time to go, there's practically no one in the store! Made meatloaf and shrimp for us to have during the week. Think I may go out by the pool for a bit. Update: well, looks like I won't be going in the pool. Nancie wanted to go for lunch to this sushi place, and so does Jess so Nancie will be here in about an hour and we'll most likely go. Oh well....hopefully, it'll be sunny another day.
Marcelyn - thank goodness you are OK. Will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. What scary pics! Thanks for the comparison pic, that was really interesting. I remember when we would get water in the basement of our first house. Not fun at all. Thanks for keeping us updated about you. Boy, things are getting really bad
kwtlw - welcome! Good advice from matchka
Rye - I always say if Vince ever knew half of what he was eating, he'd never eat again! I'm constantly sneaking "healthy" food into him.
Joyce - when I'm cleaning the litter box, the cat just sits outside the litter box watching me, waits until I'm done, THEN goes in and goes. At least Mozart uses the litterbox before you clean it...lol
Rori - how conderful your condo got an offer. I'm sure she'll come up.
tiffany - congrats

26 hours of continuous rain at our home now. We've had 22+ inches fall. Only 3 or 4 more days of this.... augh!
Houses in my development are flooding, ones that have not flooded in 30 years of being there. It really is crazy! My city house seems to have topped out at a foot in the garage. Minor really considering there are thousands of people displaced. A few pictures to give an idea of how the bayous overflowing affects the surrounding area. It really gets deep! In some neighborhoods water is up to 8 feet deep but most flooded neighborhoods are 3 feet or less. That's 3 feet too much!
The first is actually the clearance markers for the road that is covered by the water. The second is the stop lights over an intersection.

I had a sort of productive day today. I recently bought a combination washer/dryer unit to replace the washing machine and dryer that came with the house when we bought it. The laundry room is tiny and the way the machines have to be situated made it so that the door into the room couldn't be fully opened. (Can you believe anyone actually lived with it like that for ten years?!? I couldn't either.) Hence the decision to buy the combination unit. I actually bought it back in June and it was finally delivered last Thursday. So in conjunction with getting the new machine, I decided it would be a good idea to paint. And then I decided I needed a new floor cabinet to replace the wall cabinets that had to come down because the new machine is too tall. .
So yesterday I drove into Wenatchee (2 hours) to pick up a cabinet from Lowe's. Of course when I got back I was too wiped out from the four hours of driving to unload it and put it together. So that's what I did this morning. It took a little longer than expected because my two dogs aren't as good as helpers as another human would be. Then I spent the rest of the day puttering around putting things into the cabinet and thinking about other ways to make this tiny room more functional.
Because I was busy with that project, my step count for today is less than half what it was for most of last week, BUT my calorie burn is high (I don't believe for a moment that my Band gives me an accurate estimate of my calories burned - I'm sure it's always high - but I can see if I've burned relatively more or less on a given day).
Tomorrow I intend to clean out the mechanical room so that I can store the carpet shampooer and the vacuum in there. They were previously stored in the laundry room and they just take up too much room. Of course the mechanical room is also tiny. But I don't spend much time in there, lol.4 -
Tiffany, sorry about the feather mess. Congrats on the baby. I remember when I daughter gave me the news of my first. It really is amazing. And then when you hold that little bitty thing and they link onto your fingers. Oh, my heart was smitten right there. I know they say it is a reflex that they grab on but I don't care.mshe knew it was her Grandma. I got to watch both of my grand babies being born and it is such a thrill watching your little girl becoming a Mom and handling delivery and then immediately putting that precious grand baby of yours to her breast. I guess the baby was actually hers but oh, she was mine right then. An idea about the feathers and grand children. I have a tiny feather pillow that my grandma had. It was her knee pillow that she slept with it between her knees for as log as. Can remember it. She had like a 1/4 of a pillowcase for it and it was beautiful. My kids and grand daughters loved to have that pillow in their doll babies bassinets. Of course babies don't sleep with pillows anymore so I don't know if they let their dolls do that or not. You could always have pillow fights with your grand baby when you have overnights at your house!!! You know you do have to spoil them a bit.
About retirement. I didn't choose when, it chose me. I loved nursing enough that I wanted to work until 65. I also figured out that if I did work until then I would have made 1 million in salary my entire life. But then MS came and I had to retire at 49. At first I never thought I would feel like working again in my life, it was effort enough to fix a sandwich. But when I got better I started that itch. My first thought was that I wanted to give back. I loved the idea of hospice so I took the 3 month training and was a go spice volunteer. Well all the wonderful stories different volunteers told us during training never happened t me. Every client I had died within a week and I never really got to know the client or family. Plus it was very dissimulation for me to remember all the paperwork that was mandatory for the hospice to get al their grants, etc. By that time, daughter was married, both my Mom and Charlies Mom had a lot of health problems, well his Dad also. So I still felt a little like a nurse. I was part of the retirement process when my husband retired. He was always disgusted at work so I knew he wasn't going to work a day past minimum. Well the hospital got a different computer system. I can't remember who in here that was one who went around and educated people on that system. He couldn't stand it and wanted to be gone before the official changeover. So that meant retiring before he turned 62. I didn't like it but I knew I would like my husband a lot more if he did it. Since he would be able to collect his Social,Secuirty until the next July, this was in November he retired, we needed extra money. That meant me taking my pension earlier. That I wasn't happy with and am still not. I took a deep cut I that. I wanted to start taking that aage 65 and I wasn't even 60. But I had to. So that was our only big concern. The other concern we had was that for over 10 years, I had the house to myself get up when I wanted, go out with my sister or Mom when I wanted. Take a trip down to see daughter and baby when I wanted. On his off days he always wanted lmch at 11 AM. So we had a big long discussion about that. I never had any desire to go back to work. I had desires to keep busy doing things, like join a gym with my youngest daughter, cross stitch anything I could get my hand on, learn to quilt. Tried my hand at gardening. I have a black thumb.
Again, I hope everyone is safe from the storm we have now and the one that is brewing on the east coast enjoy your gardens, build decks, laundry rooms, whatever.

Katla – We had one girl in our class who we all ‘knew’ she was pregnant; but, had plans on getting married the Sunday after we graduated on Friday. The ‘counselor’ did NOT like it when she got a ‘whiff’ of it and was not going to allow her to ‘walk down’ to get her diploma. Our class President went over her head to the Principal and told him that ‘if she did not walk; none of us would’. He took our side. Most of the time he did, much to the disdain of the counselor … he started being the Principal in our 8th grade year and stayed until we graduated in 1969. We were ‘his baby’ … our entire class. Always there for any of us. One of my HS boyfriend’s parents were divorced and any time there was something going on that normally a Dad would attend with his son, he attended with this guy.
Lanette – We are thrilled! They are going to the ‘most extreme’ to have this baby. A whole lot of daily things, such as shots given to her. Everything is looking good. They did a procedure on her that helped make the conditions right and they also laughed that the baby was going to have to be born after hunting season was over. It will be. They don’t plan on finding out the sex until it is born. A couple of her friends and/or customers has voiced that it makes it difficult to buy shower gifts. She doesn’t care … just give gender-neutral (or she can exchange it). They picked up a swivel-rocker from one of her customers. It is presently covered in ‘pink’; but, it will need to be reupholstered for sure. Not so much because of the color but because of the stains. And fading.
I retired on a disability from a job I LOVED. I think I cried most nights for 3 years for a lot of reasons. Now, I love being retired. I can do what I want when I please, it also took a lot of learning to say, “NO!” and stop feeling like I had to give a reason. Some people think you have all the time in the world when you are retired. I found that once my finger was removed from that job, my time got filled with a lot more. Made me wonder ‘how’ I did it with small children and errands to run. DH was a salesman at the time; and, when our boys had chicken pox back-to-back; we either traded days or ½ days of working. Some of the things I had to get used to is that my income dropped by 75%. That was a ‘huge’ hit for us. I had co-workers donate time from unused sick of vacation leave for long enough that I got ‘vested’, therefore I receive a retirement check and my COBRA-ed insurance comes out of it. It dropped when I turned 62; and, again when I turned 65 – of course, health insurance has only gone up. But, my time is far more important to me, now; than it was when I was working. We were also involved in our sons’ activities as well. The money end of it was probably the hardest part of it. Louis then decided he wanted to paint ‘full time’ instead of it being a ‘side job’. That was just a ‘hiccup’; he quickly ended up with more work than he could handle on his own and hired a couple of guys; but, he is so picky that he ‘expected’ them to ‘show up’ and ‘show up not hung over’. He finally just told one of them that he did not have enough jobs to keep him busy enough to pay him. No problem and he found work immediately. Then he had one that *kitten* all the time and Louis basically told him to ‘hit the **%%*&^* bricks. He filed for unemployment and Louis fought that and won. Then his brother moved in with us to help him. He hired another man – who has worked for him for over 15 years. He shows up on time, only takes 30 minutes to eat, a break long enough to smoke a cigarette. He wants and needs to slow down. DYS wants him to do it ‘now’ so that we can do things before we’re too old to do them. DOS works for him; but, really doesn’t want to go to the trouble of taking over. I have told Louis that he needs to tell Trey that he needs to start looking seriously for a job because he plans on retiring (give him a date) and then ‘do it’. Basically, he is ‘working’ to keep Trey having an income. I see him ‘tired’ and ‘I want him to stop working hard like he does’. Will thinks he ‘enables’ Trey and therefore he isn’t serious about hunting for a job. I think he wants a ‘position’ and not a ‘job’. Finding help will be hard for him. Louis has recurring customers and spread out over a couple of years … he knows that so-and-so will want their houses washed down at a particular place; then wait until a later day and paint it. Always has 2 (sometimes 3) jobs going on at the same time. Trey doesn’t understand why he does that … he thinks he ought to take the jobs as they come and finish them; but, he does it this way because of weather conditions. Doesn’t do him any good to have an outside job and it be raining cats & dogs and sitting at home; when he can pull off that job and go finish an inside job. Trey is good at giving quotes and the prices have gone up as well. When he was a manager of two different paint companies, he heard the grumblings of other painters about Louis always being on the low side of bidding. He has never advertised; all his business is by word of mouth. Trey especially wishes now that we had moved to Dawson when they were still in school so that he would have grown up with the fathers of the other children in the school. He is a talker; but, Jenn thinks everybody is snobbish because they don’t talk to her. They don’t talk to her because she does not talk to them. Unfortunately, her ‘attitude’ has rubbed off on the girls. Taylor is the only one that it never did. Jenn is just a ‘negative Nelly’ and that isn’t going to change. She posts things on FB that should not be anyone’s business. We have told her that ‘if’ she says anything about us – I’d beat her @$$! And I would, at least, try. Will has not spoken to her since she showed her @$$ to Tami and has no plans to do so. It is because of her that he doesn’t come home any more than he does. This past year, he did not come at all. So Friday was the first time in a year since I had seen anything but pictures that Tami always shares with me.
I would not mind working as a clerk in a store; but, not at the mall where you’d get the $#*T shifts and weekends and hoidays. I’d have to quite before “Stupid Friday” after a holiday, I can’t stand the shoving and pushing and grabbing things from one another. We have made a budge; in May … and we are trying to follow it. When we get home I need to take our personal accounts and compare it to what we actually spend for the month (of June). I might have to rearrange a few things here and there. But, basically we’re on a ‘fixed’ income.
But, all-in-all (with the exception of the first 3 years) I have not regretted a day for it; I knew I was unable to ‘do my job’, so I did have to retire on a disability. Thankfully I was employed by the Federal government when I retired and my checks are based on what I made.
Spend time with your friends and family. Nobody ever says “I wish I had worked more or harder or whatever.’ But when you don’t spend time with your friends and family, you will miss that. It takes budgeting your income and figuring out how you can cut back. I gave up having my nails done every other week when I stopped working. Too expensive and time consuming.

Allie congratulations! i was surprised that the realtor did not have you meet the owner - sometimes owners will choose the person based on their connection to them rather than the highest bidder.
Glad to hear all of our Texas friends are safe and sound!
Tooth has stopped hurting and started draining - antibiotics are working
Made a veggie stir fry last night with a zucchini and the lone red bell pepper from my garden, onion & can of stewed tomatoes. Had it with some poached chicken breast. This morning I added some sliced mushrooms to the rest of the veggies and then added two eggs on top. yummy low cal meals.

I would love to retire but that's not going to happen any time soon. One of the reasons I returned to uni is because I figured I'm 50 so I've got another 17 - 20 years of work left. Might as well try to make them good.3

Made it to pg 59. Will finish catching up tomorrow. Today was not a good day with DH. I feel defeated and worn after this day. I know I am not lazy or manipulative and that I am not using my health challenges to get away with anything. Ugh. Standing up for myself is tiring and it has been pretty good but today.......2

Machka: I have a winter flowering camelia here in Oregon. It is a sasanqua camelia. The variety is Yuletide. It was a great source of food for our little hummingbirds during the winter snow here.Machka: I love that photograph- it really tells a story! (Nice dynamic range (b/w) and lovely composition also, btw) Story telling photographs and portraits are my weak points, but I keep trying. Because I see the real world in two dimensions and without any depth perception - I think that has become the driving force in how and what I like to photograph. I think I'm trying to communicate to others the difference in the way I actually see the world. Also, those beautiful flowers look HUGE - are they or is it a perspective thing?
The pink camellias in the photo aren't too large, maybe like medium-sized roses ... our other bush of camellias (dark pink/red ones) has camellias about the size of large roses or baseballs.
The proteas are large. The brightly coloured one with orange is probably 6 inches in diameter or so. Next time they bloom, I'll have to measure one. The pink ones which are sort of cup shaped are about 6 inches tall. I should go out and measure them too.
And thank you about the photography ... my husband was a journalist and in other media positions for many years and dealt with the photography that appeared in the newspapers and other publications he worked on. He encourages me to get that storytelling element in there whenever possible. Photographing people is not something I do well, mostly because I'm shy and I get all self-conscious when I take other people's photos.
That's interesting about your depth perception issues ... it certainly hasn't stopped you from taking some amazing photos!

Funny you should say that ... I was looking at mine somewhere around the middle of last week thinking the same thing.
Things have been stressful with our cycling events, university, and being sick ... and I looked it!
But this weekend I got some extra sleep, and finally got on antibiotics, and I feel a little bit better and I think my face shows it.
For the first time in my life, however, I am thinking of locating some vit K cream for around my eyes. I've never been a cream-on-my-face person so I don't have the faintest clue what to look for.3 -

Good to hear!
I broke a tooth a week ago ... it broke, was filled, broke, had a root canal, and has broken again. So I will have to see a dentist. But it was really starting to ache toward the end of the week and at the same time, I developed a sinus infection. Finally on Saturday night I went into an after-hours clinic and got onto antibiotics ... and both my sinuses and the tooth are feeling a bit better.

Someone please explain what a bayou is. Read about them, sung about them but don't really know what they are.
Gloria in WA
noun, plural bayous. Chiefly Lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf States.
1. a marshy arm, inlet, or outlet of a lake, river, etc., usually sluggish or stagnant.
2. any of various other often boggy and slow-moving or still bodies of water.

My brother and family have a bayou at the bottom of their road where they live just over the border from Texas in Louisiana, complete with alligators and snakes. They're expecting the rainfall that fell on Houston in the next couple days. They've been sandbagging ... but I'm almost thinking they need to start thinking about evacuation.
Sort of related to bayous ... I have a bit of a chuckle at the clothing line called Billabong. I'm sure many/most of the people who wear the clothing don't know what a Billabong is!!

Allie - Keep on keeping on!
I retired at 55. DH retired at 59. It was different for us as we got married in order to retire together. We wanted to travel and enjoy our new relationship. It felt like a whole new life. It still does, to some extent. I could not have afforded to retire as a single woman. He said, "You'll have to marry me then." And so I did.
I LOVE retirement. I think it helps to have a passion of two, and some money. For me, my writing, my food passion, travel passion, myriad intellectual passions, language passion and health and fitness passion are more than enough to fill my days! I don't always see enough of my girlfriends and my house is rather isolated, but I live in a lovely place. I live with my best friend
Our visits to the grandchildren give us something to look forward to. I like to have a project and a plan. I always need something in my diary, but not too much. In order to write I need to keep life simple and not fill it up too much. I like to have "me time" and alone time.
I have never been happier.
Lanette - Could you use your IP for cooking in the hot weather? A lot of people seem to use it for that.
Bank holiday here. We just hunker down and keep out of the crush.
Delighted to hear of the new pregnancies.
