WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR AUGUST 2017

Karen in VA--I retired early due to the fact that I was literally sick of it (bullying, favoritism, violence, and my friends leaving), had a new boss (our old boss died of cancer) who frankly seemed to be pushing us to go, and the school across the way was flunking my boy in kindergarten. I became a nationally certified pharmacy technician to pay the mortgage. Working in a pharmacy has its own stresses but the response of my store when I called to say my husband just died was do whatever you need. I work about 8 hours monthly now--enough to keep my retirement with them for 2020 but then stay with my son (he attends virtual school) the rest of the time.
I saw the new boss recently-my butt is smaller.
Went out with dogs-it is cool and feels like autumn is here. Going back to bed to read paper, today is the first day of school online.5 -
Retirement I am reading each and every word! Keep the stories and observations coming, please!
Part of my issue is that I do not want to be a burden to my family when I am infirm. I want really good care for my partner and myself when we are too old to fend. The way my brain has always worked is to go to a distant goal and work my way backwards to see what the best overall plan is. So, morbidly enough, my brain goes to the funeral and aftermath, works its way back to skilled nursing care, assisted living, independent retired living, then to my 'currently still working but within 5 years of retirement' (more like 2 or 3). When I do all that math, I think I may need a way to make extra money to be able to afford it all. I have a good paying job and have saved money. Now I need to try to figure out if it's enough. I don't fully trust that Social Security and Medicare will always be there.
Ginger I forgot you were in Texas! Adding you to my Texas dry thoughts group. xoxo

Morning, all,
Ginger, Marcelyn, Cheri, thanks for checking in, guys... absolutely astounding how much water can fall out of the skies.
Sue... I'm sorry, I know it has to be exhausting when your partner resents your condition in that way. Thinking about you.
Allie - I'd been waking up with headaches, too. They were really familiar, so I was pretty sure I was grinding my teeth at night again. They've made these fairly cheap remedies now called Plackers that will keep you from clenching or grinding at night. Woke up with no headache this morning, so it's working.
'[;p (<<<that was a drive-by rat-a-tat-tat on the keyboard from Egg--sorry, I don't speak cat, so don't know what she's trying to say ).
It's possible that the teeth grinding is because a buyer is interested in the warehouse again. It would be awesome to get the thing sold, but would also put our lives in an uproar again. And there would be some tough choices to make--many of which we seem to make over and over again.
For the uninitiated, we actually live in the warehouse, in an 800-sq. ft. apartment we built into it. We have a camper trailer out back, which is why the city code people aren't all over us like stink.
The company that's interested wants to bring in a 40-ton ice machine. Ice in this desert area is a commodity--sold between $2 and $3 for a 10-pound bag. It's trucked in daily. Every oilfield worker that comes out of here (a few thousand, at least) buys a bag every day--and every store buys it by the truckload daily or weekly. The warehouse would be perfect for them, as it has the semi-tractor-trailer-height truck bumpers they need--and one of only two places in town that has them. The other is a derelict building by the railroad tracks. So the warehouse would be perfect for them... but who knows?
As always, my fertile brain runs away with "if they buy it," into a series of "then whats." It can be exhausting. Especially since, for both of us, we're not settled on a specific next adventure. I think that we will sell what we can't fit in the two trailers (we have a panel trailer for storage), park the storage trailer with a friend, and then head up country, living in the RV, to find what we're looking for. At least, that's what I think today. But then I think about leaving my job, which I'm not ready to do, and then I think about, well, everything. It's distracting, and it's stressful, and it happens every time there's interest in this place--and it's been up for sale now for a YEAR.
Venting over...
Sorry about writing a book. Had to put it someplace, and thanks for the space to write it down.
Love y'all, thinking about so many of you this morning,
Lisa in West Texas5 -
I'll share my retirement story. I was a high school math teacher. Our state legislators passed a law that Nationally Board Certified teachers would be paid 10% more. I worked really hard and achieved National Board Certification the first year I applied. Then I got my doctorate. Both of these boosted my pay quite nicely. Then we got a new governor who did not value National Board Certification. The 10% was going away. I had 33 years plus one of sick leave which meant I could retire with 68% of my current salary. If I continued working it would be with a 10% pay cut, plus teacher retirement and social security still coming out of my pay. This was a no brainer for me. I said, it's been nice, folks, but I've had enough. I was 54 years old. I got an adjunct position teaching one night a week at a local college that helped with the drop in my take home pay, then I got a 49% position as a content coach, which I did for another 5 years. That together with the adjunct gig got to be too much, so I quit the night job. I retired from content coaching the year I broke my wrist and just began to feel old. That's when I started the exercise class at the gym. I love my retired life, and actually feel and look younger than I did when I was teaching full time.6

karen I can relate to how your brain works-practical!! My retirement pro has looked at our data and laid out 2 plans, one leaving early shows when the $$ runs out and staying longer shows how much further it goes. Yet, I feel like this is a really important step to keep considering. Even though I have a retirement date I am still thinking I could leave early and I could leave later--I like thinking I have a say in this--whether or not that is true. I know full well we don't necessarily get a say--health, unforeseen events can all have a hand. It gives me some comfort to think I can control for all inevitabilities but..... I am going to focus on what I love, tuck away as much $$ as I can. So focus on your passions as Heather says, staying fit and well and as as we all can be. My closest and bestest friends have all retired and it does wear on me when new admin has a GREAT LIFECHANGING NEW METHOD! that were all gonna have to use now (oy vey)!
Today we head to Corning glass museum and then the long drive home. We snuck in a dinner with DH on college campus last night--I got one more hug from her-delightful. When I get home I'll post some pics.
Stay safe and high and dry folks. Sending strength. NYKAREN

Okay here's one, my cute little 11 yo niece Kaylie who is impressed with the falls and hotel beds!!!8 -
Good Morning everyone!
Tiffanie, congratulations on becoming a "Grammy"!! Miracles do happen! I just love holding babies.
Roni, fingers crossed that everything works out with the condo.
Marcelyn, thanks for sending the pictures. Can't believe all that water. Please stay safe and get out if you need too. Thinking good thoughts for those also dealing with the flooding.
Paula, boy have you been busy! I love new appliances! We had to replace our stove a couple of years ago as we have a mouse get in and couldn't get the smell out. Drawback of living in the country.
Lenora, good for you for sticking up for that girl. She earned the right to walk with everyone else.
Gloria and Machka, so happy to hear you are both feeling better.
Lisa, so much to think about. Never thought about the ice situation.
NYKaren - Kaylie is so cute!
My plan for retirement is to retire around 66. At that time I will get full social security and the house and student loan will be paid off. I went to a financial planner for the first time last year as it was free through work and he said I looked on target to retire are 66. My husband is 5 years younger so he plans to work to 62 and retire with me. We don't need much to be happy and the only plans we have right now is to be able to go to Spain once a year. Spain is where he got his masters. He is Cuban so Spain has a culture that feels welcoming to him. He taught Spanish for about 10 years. So our income dropped a lot when he left teaching. I know he would love to retire to Spain. But we don't have the income to do that. Also, I don't speak Spanish. I tried, it was a disaster. Not much in the way of jobs around here. No big industry in VT. Another reason why we are looking at other places to move to for retirement. I love VT as it is so beautiful but a hard state to make a living in. I'm ready to retire now so I know I will be ready in 3 years (only 62 now).
Still proud to say I am still losing weight. Along with the physical weight, the mental weight comes off. That was a surprise. Very welcome.
Well better get to work. It's just so much easier to type on my work computer.
Have a great day ladies! Terry in VT

Machka When I heard Billabong I started humming Waltzing Matilda.
Sounds like sinus and tooth issue related.
josephinebo glad that difficult time is behind you.

Karen in VA ~ I did not think I was ready to retire at age 58 from teaching. I tried subbing for a while and finally realized that I hated feeling like I was baby sitting. At age 69, there is no way I would want to work again. I love having my time to myself.
If you can work it to being able to work one or two days a week, that would be great. My sis is an RN and has tried being “on call” but found that she loved the money she made going full time.
Rori ~ Fingers crossed for you!
Tiffanie ~ I can just imagine what you looked like with feathers everywhere. What a mess! LOL Congrats on the good news about becoming a Grammie!
Lisa ~ Know that you will make a decision about the warehouse that is best for you.

Still raining here. Hubs has today and tomorrow home as Texas A&M is closed. Deloitte Houston closed so son working from here. All is well for us however I don't know when Ben will get back to Houston and his apt. His scripts were running out so will call insurer and ask for emergency refill from doc. We ran out to Kroger last evening...having enough food to feed a young man back in the house..lol
Hoping all my Houston friends here are safe and dry. Also some of our Louisiana friends! Such devastation. Prayers!

Langman, we had a mouse get in our furnace ductwork once. It was, as you can imagine, disgusting and, unfortunately, we couldn't move. That was in the city. Here in the country, I haven't had any mice in the house, but mice and rats are everywhere outside, despite the snake (bull and rattle) population. We had four rats living in the base of our huge firepit and I had to had the neighbor come over and shoot them because my husband wasn't here at the time.2
-
Paula - OMG! Rats?! Fortunately we just have little field mice. You would think with 2 cats and a "rat catcher" dog we would be fine. Every once in while they get one. But I can hear them in the walls scratching. We do set traps. I guess I've gotten use to them. If they were bigger I probably would get an exterminator.2

Rori: Sending hope & wishes for a good offer on your condo in Hawaii. :flowerforyou:
Barbie: I'm not a bit sorry I retired early, either. DH needed me and still does. At the time I retired we were just learning about his MS situation. He is a poster boy for autoimmune diseases--diabetes, arthritis, and MS are the three biggest challenges but he also has blood pressure issues to worry about.
Cheri: It is good to see your smiling emoji. I've been hoping things are okay for you and your College Station neighbors. I think it is wonderful that your son is with you rather than stuck in the flood. :flowerforyou:
Marcelyn & Ginger: Oh my! Your photos are astonishing. This is hard to imagine. Most of the weather events that make the news are big deals, but they are over with fairly soon. This stalled out storm seems to be hanging on and on and on. Stay safe. (((HUGS)))
Lenora: Your HS principal sounds like a very dedicated and caring educator. It is nice to hear about him. :flowerforyou:
(((Sharon)))
Alison: I hope you get everything you deserve out of the settlement, including alimony. You are getting closer to freedom and happiness every day.
Dr Katie: I feel and look younger than I did when I was teaching, too. I credit the amazing changes that I've made with MFP for improving my health and energy levels. The absence of chronic exhaustion that I experienced for years as a result of a too long commute for my work combined with poor health habits has made a big difference, too. I love going to the gym regularly for yoga, and choosing to have fun as a personal goal. The combination has been miraculous.
Yoga today!!!!! I look forward to it. I've had to miss too many days lately & I feel the difference. I'm sore and grumpy. I think yoga will improve both physical soreness and my grumpy attitude.

Thank you all for the congratulations, I had to laugh...she asked me if this means she has to stop going to the gym. Honestly, I don't think she need to worry about that yet, but I told her that was a question only her doctor can answer.
Janetr okc Oh yes, I will definitely share pics!
Macelynh Wow! That is just to much water! So glad your doing okay.
Joyce Indiana A knee pillow would be great, thanks for the idea.
Terry in VT Hello neighbor! I was reading a previous post of yours, you make chainmaille! I have to ask..do you make your own jump rings?
Carol in GA No more feather pillows for me, my cat is still finding little feathers to play with.
Tiffanie in NH2 -
We have had off and on rain for several days. I've been working on paper work and credit card bills.
Karen in VA. - my DH who has always worked in budgeting and finance in the Air Force and at the university after he retired from the service wanted us to retire a year before we did. I was working on a reengineering project and wanted to see it through. So, we built a new house in a new community and started a new life. The best thing was being able to travel whenever we wanted and spending more time with family. I took up golf and bridge again and made many new friends. I belong to a book club so always have something to read. I tried other interests like choir and quilting but they didn't last mainly because of my eyesight. My parents retired later in life and my mom had a stroke so they never got to do all of the things they had planned.
Rori- fingers crossed for the condo to sell.
DH hurt his back a week ago and has been taking all kinds of meds. He wants to be well NOW.
Time to fix his lunch...

Tiffanie, no I have tried numerous times to make jumprings myself but couldn't get the hang of it. I know everyone says that would be cheaper. When you have to make 600+ for one bracelet, I just go on-line and see where the cheapest place it to buy them pre-made. Spiderchain, Chainweavers, Rio Grande...4

Transfixed by reporting from the US Gulf Coast. So much water falling, so few places for it to go, and so many people in its path. :noway: I devoured all the information I came across, but with no TV and slow internet I'd soon read all I could get hold of. I'm keeping everyone who's in danger in my thoughts!
But to take my mind off the threat itself, I went out chanterelle hunting on the mountain behind my house. It was either that or watch paint dry. Literally! I put the primer on yesterday, and at ambient temperatures I can't paint a second layer until at least 48 hours later.
So I put my rubber boots on, grabbed a knife and a burlap bag, and headed up the slope. I flushed up a couple ptarmigans on the way. Poor things! Hunting season begins in 10 days. I walked up to the place my husband and I call Paradise (because of the flowers and the views), where I know I can usually find chanterelles in season. Then I did my methodical back and forth along the side of the mountain. After just a couple minutes - BINGO!
See them there, hiding in the grass? That one little patch yielded about a pound of chanterelles. I picked them lovingly, one by one, brushed them clean and put them in my burlap bag. (So much more enjoyable to clean them gradually in the field than all at once standing at a kitchen counter.) Whenever I grew tired and raised my eyes to the horizon, this is what I saw.
Nope, not tired anymore.
After harvesting everything in that particular goldmine, I continued wandering back and forth along the mountainside, mostly because I wanted to, not because I needed more chanterelles. As I walked, I thought of the comment from Rye (???...I think it was Rye... sorry, I forget who, one of our newbies who I haven't memorized yet :flowerforyou:) that my life is like a book or a movie. It doesn't feel like a book or movie to me, but in fairness I have to agree. I know how lucky I am and I'm grateful for every minute. If I should ever forget, a film team comes to my home town of Longyearbyen just about every week to remind me.
After finding another pound of chanterelles I decided to head for home. I also found one much better mushroom: a cep, aka porcini, aka Boletus edulis. Heather is well acquainted that particular culinary wonder. Unfortunately, flies of every stripe also love it and lay their eggs in it. The one I found had been above ground for some time and the top was full of maggots. But the stem - the best part - was essentially maggot-free, so I took that home.
And here is a selfie with chanterelles
My darling mother turned 93 today. I called her to wish her a happy birthday. She was cheery, but a bit confused, as usual nowadays. Two years ago, she broke both hips and her pelvis, one after the other, and suffered a minor stroke, all over the course of 12 months. She is no longer able to be the Superwoman she always used to be. She's apparently lost all her internal maps, and that's hard to take when you have one daughter in New England, one in the Pacific Northwest, and one who bounces around between several places far north of all honor and decency. (That's me.) But we enjoyed talking.

~Re - yes, gotta love seeing photos!
~ Karen in VA - not only is it unsettling, it's thrilling and has me giddy like I've opened a gift!! Yes, he was very special - not only to me, but to many others. His funeral was attended by over 3k people, some as far away as Mexico and England flew to SE Washington to be there. The church was standing room only. Graveside people had to walk for several blocks to get in. There were only a few hundred people that attended that. We had a HUGE party after that at the Alano club (my Daddy was sober 34yrs) where it was a non-stop sea of people and well wishers. He touched many lives, and was well loved in the 12step community. So yes, he was very special...
~ DJ - praying for your friend to have a speedy recovery!
~ Michele in NC - still living the story out - especially when the weather changes!
~ Josephine - Sam Q is a friend of the family, and blind. He is an inspiration! I'm not sure if that is an original quote, pretty sure someone else said it first, but I give him ALL the credit for it...
~ Heather - I'm glad your DH got a chuckle because I still shake my head at the memory!
~ Barbie - red is my FAV color, and it looks GREAT on you!
~ Becca - SOOOO happy to read that letter! I'm sure there will be more to follow...
~ Pip - super CUTE Airstream!
~ ALL who've been dealing with Harvey and his Wallbanger - thanks for checking in, and for some of the terrifying photos!

Tere in VT – It wasn’t just me who stood up for her, the ‘entire class’ did. Principal started the year we entered 8th grade; and left right after we graduated. We were 'his' babies ... he did things for anybody when it came to our class. If a boy on the football or basketball team did not have a Dad (death or divorce) he went with them as their stand-in. We also had a lot of good teachers. The school was a college preparatory school; but, it also was geared for kids who would be taking over their family farms. Very active school participation, not only with sports; but, in choir, drama clubs. We had a lot of 'extras' for a school of maybe 500-550 (8th - 12th grade). FFA, FHA, Home Ec, even an 'art' club. We had a nice marching band. For a small school we really did have a lot going for us.
I retired on a disability at the age of 47. Took about 3 years to accept it; but, now I love it. Depending on if I happen to end up with a 6-month driving restriction. That 'suxs' - it is easier to 'not' have a car; than have one you can't drive. Thankfully, what I have is controlled to a large degree by medication. Like with anything else, you 'try to make the best of it'. Take a course in something you want to learn. I'm going to find out when they will be having their next session on 'sign language'. They teach it at one of the churches in town. As long as it isn't at night I can go. I don't drive at night.
Get a couple of outside kitties who will learn to be hunters ‘if’ you do not overfeed them.
We have field mice and we occasionally will have one fall into the walls and we’ll hear them scratching. That drives me ‘crazy’; but, they don’t last too long and so far we haven’t smelled them.
We have a cat and dog chasing dog.

We're still doing okay. Our house is up on stilts. We still have power. Thank you Lord! Our internet service went out this morning. We probably won't get it back for a while. Neighborhood is under water.
We've got more water creeping up in back. Garage under our house is still dry. About an inch of water creeping into the back of the barn. But Dan tells me it's receded some in the past hour. Still getting a light rain all day. I'm doing a few chores.

Langman - They are native rats, not Norway rats or roof rats like you would see in more populated areas. They are much cuter, at least in the smaller sizes I've seen. This article says they can grow up to 17 inches, but the ones I've seen are A LOT smaller than that. http://www.burkemuseum.org/research-and-collections/mammalogy/collections/mamwash/rodentia.php#Bushy_tailed_Woodrat0

Our plans are moving along. One garage sale down next one this coming Thursday Friday and Saturday. Everything is moved out of the main floor of our house and either packed away in the RV or up in our second floor living quarters. It looks really nice and cozy up there. We will be making our first trip down to Arizona Monday with our fully packed RV and car. We have a prospect for renting our house too. A lady from church. We decided to step out in a leap of faith and move down there wether John had a job or not. Then John got a call today from an independent food service company. They want him to call as soon as he gets there so they can interview him. That would be great if he gets a job then we would have health insurance. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
I am trying to skim and keep up with your lives. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Love the pictures and the adventures. Thinking about all of you in Texas. I hope to be somewhat back to normal by the middle of September. I went to my Lymes appointment today and still have it. I knew I did because I have to be off my medication for two weeks and all of my symptoms including the brain fog came back.
Mary from Minnesota4 -
Mary in MN did your husband loose his job there. What is the reason y'all decided to move across country? What does your daughter think of the move? Where in AZ?
Lol. Sorry, lots of questions. I must have missed a post some where along the way.

Just laying in bed getting ready to do my nightly reading and eating frozen grapes. Frozen grapes are my favorite summer snack. Just wash them, pull them off the stems, throw them in a freezer bag. After they are frozen just put some on a bowl and let them just begin to thaw before eating them. They sort have the consistency of a slushy. Yum!
Mary, I'll keep my fingers crossed that John finds a job. You are so brave to move before he has a job. Sorry to hear you are still dealing with the Lyme desease.
Allie, I will definitely keep you in my thoughts and hope for good news about the condo.
Ginger, must be nerve wracking to see that water getting closer. Wishing you and all in Texas the best. Makes me feel very thankful I'm up here in the mountains.
