It's time for the 1st report for the Fall Challenge! We had 24 people sign up for the challenge, alas two of them were brand new and I haven't seen any posts from them since they signed up and nothing for week one, so I have removed them from the list. If they return, that's great and I'll reenter them. The third person just didn't post for this week and admits to being in and out of this thread so....
Our group goal is to lose 233.3 lbs. in 9 weeks or close to 5% of our total weight, (4.88% to be exact). Our average goal per person comes to 11.67 pounds but that is slightly skewed by a few participants who have really set high goals for themselves for this 9 week time period. I applaud your high goals and wish that I could see myself losing those amounts in 9 weeks, but my weight loss has slowed down quite a bit this summer and I'm just trying to get it back together. No matter what your goal: high, low or maintenance, the best of luck to everyone!
For the 21 participants reporting this week, we are off to a great start, 16 people lost, 2 maintained and 3 had small gains. Super!! To the three with slight gains, don't give up! It happens to all of us and you will get there, just keep following your plan and logging faithfully. Week one we lost 25.7 pounds equaling 11% of our goal. Way to go team! I think of us a team because you can do more, go further and support each other working together against our mutual opponents as a team, than you can alone. So it's Team MFP Fall Challenge vs Team Excessive Weight and Unhealthy Bodies. Winners for Week One: MPF FALL CHALLENGE!

Fall challange... way to go team!! Great first week! And thank you @bapcarrier for keeping up with all our mess and for the encouragement!!2

@tdunnegan Way to go for getting back to the gym! Just returned myself this week after not going for most of the summer, and I'm feeling so much better!
Welcome @LadySanguin
@Nikion901 and @BarneyRubbleMD my hubby has had low back problems for about 2 yrs and has been seeing a chiropractor on and off when it flares up. Well in the last few months he has had less back pain but now half his left thigh is numb, and sometimes it burn and itches. He's supposed to get an appt with his MD to get an MRI, because somethings not right. Good luck with the PT, Niki. I used to work for one and have watch many wheel themselvs in and after 6 weeks leave walking.4 -
Wow, we're off to a great start this challenge. Thanks, Barb, for pulling those stats together.2
-
@happygirlxxx just wanted to give you a big THANK YOU for sending me the spreadsheet for the challenge. Having it already set up made my life so much easier. I had a few things that didn't compute correctly but I finally figured out the formula had to be adjusted for the correct line spread as I had entered more people, reentered the formula and voila all was good! Still took me a couple of hours or more to get it all recorded, good thing Friday is one of my days off.3
-
@Nikion901 - like a few others have mentioned, I use the mobile app for logging (love the barcode scan feature!) and prefer to use a desktop/laptop for posts. Double edge sword for me. I don't have a desktop/laptop at home so that leaves me with only being able to post while at work or struggling with posting from my Android smartphone. Sometimes I am nervous about being online for personal purposes while at work.
To all the others that are finding their way back to exercising, be it an outside gym or equipment at home - you are expiring me! I, too, have lower back problems (2 herniating discs) so sometimes exercising can be difficult and painful. @cellosmiles - LOVE the idea of Facebook marketplace for possible home equipment. I am going to check that out!
@MermaidPrincessRach - I can relate to your missing the personal posts from everyone. So many times I come here looking for motivation or support and all I see are challenge posts. I do love the challenges though and will continue with them, even if I am doing a challenge all by myself. I can't complain too much about the lack of interacting posts as I am not contributing as I should either. I will try to do better!
Happy weekend everyone!
Until next time; wishing everyone Peace , Love and Weight Loss !!4 -
Wow... it is amazing to still see this thread running... I was very active in it 7 years ago when I first started here on MFP and it really did help me keep my focus and lose a lot of weight... most of which has decided to return, but I am fighting it back off again!
Hello! I remember you from back when... I too am in the same boat of having to lose again. Can't seem to find my motivation this time.
Friday fitness? Nope. Can't seem to get going. Working on what goes in my mouth today. Drinking lots of water cause I am hungry !! But I made it though ONE day!! Just worrying about today right now
Not sure if the weight I posted for the challenge is real. My scale only goes to a certain amount and after that it says 'Err' so I just guessed. We will see when I actually fit in the scale again.

@karenleona - you and I may be... well, if not exactly weight loss "twins," then at least closely related ;-). I'm female and 62 yrs old, 6ft tall, and weighed 305 lbs when I started this weight loss journey for the thousandth time. Like you (it seems), when I started in April 2016 I felt sad, depressed, angry with myself, and pretty close to hopeless. I could not believe, after all the time I'd lost a ton is weight, I was "here" yet again! Every single day was a struggle to get control of what I ate.
And then I got serious! I lost 120 lbs in about 14.5 mos and I've been successfully maintaining for the past three months - something I'd never been able to do before.
You've come back to MFP - that was step one for me. You've reached out to Friends in the MFP community for support - that was step two for me.
Step three for me was logging, logging, logging. Being honest about what I was logging cuz I was old enough to understand (finally) that when I lied about it I was lying to no one but myself.
Step four for me was keeping track of my binges (yes, I'm a compulsive binge eater) and my late night snacks. I decided that for me my food intake cutoff time was going to be 7pm. Nothing goes into my mouth street 7pm except toothpaste! I used (and continue to use) my google calendar to track my days of no binges (B) and no late night snacking (LNS). So every evening I write in my calendar something like B1LNS1. The next day, if successful, becomes B2LNS2, and so on. A day when either of those two things happen resets the clock, and I do NOT like that! The "good" days pile on top of each other. At one point I actually reached B45LNS89 (not saying where I am right now. Let's just say that maintenance brings with it a different set of challenges :-D)
Another thing I did that was hugely helpful to me was using my cellphone as a visual reminder of what I want to accomplish. I used the "sticky note" app on my smart phone to create an icon right in the center of my phone home page, where I can't help but see it every single time I turn the thing on (about a thousand times a day). The icon shows my weight at its highest, and the date I started my current journey - so 305, 4/4/16. I never ever want to go there again, and that icon is there every single day, even today, to remind me of that. In fact, I recently got a new phone and the very first thing I did on it was to recreate that icon, lol.
You can do this, Girl! If I can, so can you. In the beginning I could not exercise - was simply too heavy and had too many aches and pains. At first I simply focused on eating better. As I lost weight, I felt more energetic and started walking. Now I walk between 13k and 18k steps almost every day (I use a Fitbit, which motivates me to get off my butt and MOVE).
Karen (and others reading this too, of course), please don't give up!! One day at a time, and good health can be yours before you know it. You're worth the effort! This wonderful community right here on MFP is here to help and support. Happy to be worth you on your journey. Best wishes, Birgit7 -
@GorillaNJ - @RobinsEgg did a great thing when she created this thread, and I know I'm not alone in missing her. I saw that she's been on and off MFP occasionally, I just hope her health has improved some and she is doing well.
Friday Fitness - I haven't been able to get back to the Cardiac Phys Therapy I was doing since the last time I was in the hospital. The intention has been there but not the will or the time. I know I've lost a lot of the stamina I had built up previously. I'm just going to have to suck it up and start SOMEWHERE. I am considering buying the HALTI dog halter some of you recommended so that I can start taking my dog for a walk again without worrying about being pulled off my feet. I'm also going to take my own advise and try the chair exercises I've seen on You Tube. I know I have to start, now I just need to DO IT.
@karenleona - thanks for your encouraging words - and yes, we all need those now and then, even if things appear to be going well. That's why I love this thread so much. The challenges are great, and really important to me, but knowing that I have someplace to go to blow off steam and get encouragement or a kick in the butt is the reason I keep coming back.

QUESTION Everyone .... Give a shout if you use a smartphone for MFP. (I recently had to use one and found it great for reporting on my food diary with it, but terrible for following the community page threads and threads.) So now I use the smartphone for logging and the desktop computer for sharing.
I love using my phone to log my food and weight on MFP. But, I cannot stand reading anything on my phone. I use my computer to read the community threads. Unfortunately, I'm not at my computer much these days. I read through everything though. I like seeing everyone's progress and seeing what people are up to.
I wish I was more active here, but it's hard to find the time.

Tried to post some pix on my cell phone but couldn't do it. Will have to try on PC. I'm with most others, I make entries in my diary both ways (especially on the phone with anything that has a UPC) but doing anything on community is near impossible for me on my phone so it's only on PC.2
-
@ birgitkwood- thanks for the words of encouragement! You have been so successfull! I know that maintenance can be a challenge itself. gonna have to try and figure out how i put a sticky not on my phone....
at one time i joined a group that concentrated on tracking no late night snacking. So far i have 2 evenings under my belt!! Tonight was especially hard as i received an unexpected bill for my life insurance policy. Not sure why but of course i have no money to pay it. And it was due the 17th!! not sure how that works when i get it on the 22nd. My go to response to stress is to eat but i managed to avoid that tonight. My other challenging times are when i get home from working a 12 hr day and i am exhausted or when i am working night shift. Need to come up with the determination to get through those times as i start my set of 4 shifts on sunday

I have to say, I love how flexible MFP is in logging meals. I'm working with a dietician and she created a food plan for me with 6 meals per day: breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and evening snack. I've just noticed that by logging on the MFP on my computer, I can change the standard snack meal and create 3 different snack meals. This definitely helps me log my meals even better.4

Saturday nsv: I'm using my food scale for eveything again, so I'm back on track with that! And I'm sleeping better again, don't know if it's just from going to the gym or a combo of that and eating better and going in to bed at a decent hour.3
-
Saturday Success ... Speaking of sleep ( @jam5660 ) It's more my cat's success than mine today ... she finally managed to get me to roll out of bed at 8AM ... cause she wanted her breakfast. She's ready for me to get up before the crack of dawn like I used to do when she was a kitten, but my sleep is broken up so much during the night that I usually let myself loll in bed to see if I will fall back to sleep to catch a few more ZZZ's.
My NSV for this week will occur later on this morning when I take a trunk load of obsolete or broken electronics to the Electronics Recycle Fair at my town's highway department. It's only on until 1 PM so I cannot laze around this Saturday morning.
EVERYONE Thanks for responding to my question of smartphone vs desktop computer for your MFP input. It sparked some interesting feedback from 'you all'.

Hi All!!
Hope everyone is having a great Saturday ... I just baked some low carb chocolate and almond cookies and my apartment is smelling delish!!
I had not realized this group had been created so long ago ... 7 years? wow!! @GorillaNJ welcome back! Hope we can be as supportive as the original group!
@bapcarrier glad the xls worked well; but I must no take the whole credit ... @Nikion901 shared hers with me when it was my turn .. I just created a new one for me, but took as inspiration the one shared
@ihp2015 I have seen the funniest meal codings used at MFP; I think its great to be able to customize it to your needs. I have not done it because I am not really that organized with my meals, so lots of time I just end up adding tons of stuff in "snacks".
@birgitkwood thank you for sharing a bit of your experience. I need to lose as well 120lbs; I would be a good at just 100lb, but since I am kinda short and my bone structure is not that big I want to try to lose the extra 20lbs. So knowing that other people has been able to accomplish it definitively inspires and gives me hope So fully charged of energy for my next 50lbs!!
Saturday Success!
I had a couple NSVs this week:
1. Was able to wear high heel shoes after I don't know how many years without it being torture. I stopped wearing them years ago because a. my feet looked like sausages and b. all my weight on tiny piece of my feet ... not a good combo for sure. Now they fit quite nicely and I wont say super comfy, because truth is high heels will never be the most comfortable shoes for me, but I can stand them for a bit.
2. I needed a belt for my pants because they were falling off and, since I haven't had the need for one in since forever because my pants were always tight, I had to borrow one from my husband So a. either I get new pants or b. I get myself a belt
4 -
I had another Saturday Success... I "fit" in size 16 jeans today, 2 months ago I wouldn't even get them off the rack. I still have some more to go before they are comfortable, and don't cause a horrible muffin top, but I got them on and buttoned/zipped!!
@Nikion901 I'm glad your kitty let you sleep in a little bit and that you are able to get your electronics recycled, so many areas don't have any place to take them so they end up in the woods/creeks/rivers. It's so bad in our area that they finally had to resort to having 2 days a month where a location is open to receive that kind of stuff, and need less to say our basement is being emptied regularly.(hubby's a pack rat)
@happygirlxxx those cookies look amazing!! Congrats on the heels, I would love to find a pair that are cute and decently comfortable for a few hours and a pipe dream of being affordable! I too had to resort to borrowing hubby's belt, but he now doesn't get it back because I love it! It's one of those one size belts with no holes, woven cotton that slides through a metal clasp. It's actually wide enough to hold something up! But not stiff like the "leather" ones.3 -
My NSV is kind of old because it happened just before Hurricane Irma but with everything going on I never reported it. Three years ago I bought two nice pair of "Cottonseed" summer capris, which are especially good for our hot humid weather. At the time, they were just a little too small and I was losing weight quite nicely. Well, problems arose and I ended up gaining 50 lbs back! About the beginning of this month I got them out and I was so excited, they fit! Down 4 to 5 sizes from where I started!!
@GOINSTD12 good luck with trying the chair exercises, I've heard good things about them being a great route for those who have health/back/standing problems. I hope you are able to get the halter for your dog, I miss my little dog and one of the things I miss the most is our walks! It's not the same walking alone...boring!
@birgitkwood and @karenleona I too have a terrible time with late night snacking. At midnight last night I was eating dry Cheerios... I do good all day and just seem to lose all my will power in the evening or late at night. One thing I have to try to do is start going to bed at the decent hour the same time every night. I read that it will help your weight loss and I'm also hoping I'll be in bed before these cravings hit me. I have an android phone and I have no idea how to add a sticky note to my cell phone, I'll have to check for the app! Here's hoping these great ideas work for both of us, KarenLeona, as they did for Birgit.4 -
Saturday success. I worked out at the gym for two hours today.7
-
Saturday success. For the first time ever (since I got my fitbit in March) I walked 15,000 steps today, equalling 11 kilometers. I'll probably be sore tomorrow, but I'm quite proud of myself.7
-
My original goal 201 days ago was to lose 100 pounds exactly. I'm 55 pounds down right now so over halfway!!!13
-
Good Sunday everyone!!
Here in Milan is supossed to rain, hopefully not all day so we can go outside for a walk with the dogs.
@wilsonkegler congrats on reaching halfway of your weight loss journey!! Definitively an awesome milestone to celebrate!
@ihp2015 amazing, 15K steps / 11km that is a long distance!!! And you might be sore physically, but in spirit you will be beaming and ready for the next 11kms for sure!!! Congrats!
@tdunnegan 2 hours? wow, I see people pulling that time in the gym and I wonder where they get their energy; after an hour I am tired! good for you!
@bapcarrier @jam5660 isn't it amazing when you find clothes that fit in your closet? i it!! best feeling ... of course when you weight yourself you can see the numbers on the scale going down, but being able to wear a smaller size that is the true proof of how well we are doing!! WTG!!
@jam5660 thanks! yes the cookies are delicious; this morning they were super soft and I had to have one even before breakfast
Sunday Sharing!
One of the downsides of relocating all the time … you need to find new doctors and in my case that I had cancer then its annoying because need to be bringing my medical file everywhere and explaining everything over and over again.
I found an endocrinologist and he speaks OK English, so we can communicate; but when I told him the type of thyroid cancer I had (which is a weird one) his eyes opened and he wants to see all my medical history … and of course I forgot the file back in the US.
So now I have contacted my doctors back in Asia (where I was originally diagnosed and had my surgery) to ask for a report. And it was so funny, when I called the assistant said that yes she remembers me and then proceeds to ask if I have lost weight … was I the only fat patient this endocrinologist had? Or maybe I do have a dashing personality ; well at least I had the satisfaction to respond that yes, I have lost 70lbs
Anyway, tomorrow I go back to review my blood work results and have an ultrasound of my neck. I have reached the 5 years mark and so far everything indicates that my cancer markers are still almost unnoticeable, fingers crossed everything goes well tomorrow
OK time to go prepare breakfast for the hubby and the doggies ... its pass 8am and the 3 of them are deep asleep, the good life!3 -
@wilsonkegler congrats! That must be an awesome feeling.
@ihp2015 15K steps- I have never reached that many, I have a new goal!
I just want to add how important these challenges are to me, I have lost over 10 pounds because of the summer challenge and I hope to lose another 10 for the fall. Thank you all for being here.6 -
Sunday Share ... I was feeling blue today for no apparent reason so I decided to take a long leisurely ride along the waterfront and called to ask a friend who who can no longer drive if she would like to come with me. I've been to her senior apartment complex several times to take her out, and we talk on the phone every couple of months. My friend has dementia from a shrinking brain in the frontal lobes so her memory is getting to the point of needed some living assistance. I called and she said she'd love to go for the ride, and I verified that she was still at the address I had on record for her ... yep.
Well, I got there and called her to tell her to come on down but she never showed up. So I called her back and she said she was looking for me but couldn't see me ... back and forth on the phone ... I asked again if she was living at the address I gave her and she said yep ... but I got suspicious when I couldn't find her name on the telephone number keypad at the entrance, nor her apartment number on the mailbox wall inside the building and out, asking her to describe what she saw in the vicinity of her whereabouts ... "people and places to sit down" she said. I asked if she could see the parking lot and she said, no, the cars were whizzing by on the road ... so I guessed she and I were in 2 different buildings .... and finally she remembered the name of her apartment complex ... yep ... it wasn't the one I was at! But I didn't know this one and could't look it up on my phone, nor find a phone book ... and my friend was unable to tell me where it was either. So I told her we'd get together on a different day and went home.
When I got there I looked it up ... yep, an assisted living facility for memory care. Well ... I at least got me exercise out of it ... walking the hallways of the apartment large U-shaped apartment building looking for her apartment number, that didn't exist.
Lord, protect my friend and everyone who has a physical disability like her shrinking brain and my spine with loose discs floating about.1 -
Sunday share: I was down to 210 at beginning of August and went off the grid for a month (little to no exercise, no tracking, back to junk food in excess)..
Gained 7 lbs back. Seems every time I approach 200 I go awol. So a pound a week it is for this challenge!!
Nikion901: goodness that is quite an experience finding your friends condition is advancing. I'm sorry to hear it. Interrestingly, just last weekend I went out with a friend who's now 76. I'm 60. We met at work 38 years ago. Recently we've been connecting more again. When we went out last weekend I realized she is slowing down quite a bit. A bit unsettling. I will stand by her all the way. Kinda feeling sad. My mum developed dementia in her final years. Not easy.
Sam5660: care to post recipe for cookies?
They do look yummy!
Birgjtwood: I binge eat/am emotional eaTer too.
I like the idea of tracking that. Gonna give it a try
Bapcarrier: I'm new. I hope you got my challenge post?!?2 -
@tdunnegan Welcome and yes I got your challenge posting for week one! Thanks for checking, keep up the hard work and I know you'll lose those 7 pounds and more this challenge!
Sunday Share: I have an acquaintance (notice I didn't say friend) who noticed I had lost some weight. She asked me how much and when I said about 50 pounds she said "Oh, aren't you lucky." Does she think I won a contest and the weight just fell off? Well, being me I couldn't just let it go, so I said, "no luck involved, just a lot of hard work!" She never acknowledged my comment at all! Grrr...3 -
@Nikion901 - I am very sad this is happening to your friend. And you...2
-
@happygirlxxx Good luck finding doctors you like and congrats on hitting the five year mark. It must be exciting to live in so many different parts of the world, but I can't imagine the medical part of it with what you have to deal with! Positive thoughts and fingers crossed for you tomorrow!3
-
Buongiorno!!
Ready to start the week? I cant believe September is almost over and that I am missing my favorite season ... love fall, the change of colors, the weather getting colder, the food, etc I don't think it will be as nice here
@Nikion901 I am sorry this is happening to your friend; most likely she might not realize what is going on, but for all of you that get to see her progression must be really hard. I saw it with my father in law and its sad. Its nice that you are willing to be there for her.
@bapcarrier I agree with you ... this is hard work!! our wins so far are because we are being consistent and dedicated... weight loss is not luck! Thank you for your positive vibes (it helped!!)
@tdunnegan I think you were asking for the recipe of the cookies posted last week; here it goes:
Chocolate & Almond Cookies
Ingredients:
a. Almond Flour - 2.5 cups
b. Sliced Almonds - 0.25 cups
c. Salted Butter - 0.5 cup
d. Eggs - 2
e. Baking Soda - 0.5 tsp
f. Shredded Chocolate - 15grms (I used Lindt 90% cacao)
g. Erythritol / Sweetener - to taste
Method:
Step 1: Pre-heat over 180C
Step 2: Mix Almond Flour with Baking Soda and sweetener
Step 3: Melt butter and mix with sliced almonds, chocolate and egg
Step 4: Mix both
Step 5: Bake for about 10minutes; but check because will depend of the oven. In the US I had a profesional oven, so was fast; here I have a small over took longer than 10minutes.
Step 6: Take out, let cool and then store in a tin.
Step 7: enjoy!
I got 22 cookies; but will depend how big you make them. BTW, I am no expert baker, so this is based on a recipe that I found once and that I adapted based on the ingredients I had available.
Monday Check - In!
Just got back from the doctor and awesome news … everything its OK and the tumor markers hardly perceptible!
Even though its been 5 years, every time I wait for my results I am a bit nervous because when I got sick, I didn’t look / feel sick at all … it was detected when I decided to go to the endocrinologist just because I had gained weight and of course it could not be all the McDs I was eating, had to be the thyroid, right?
Well, it ended up being that I was gaining weight because of all the junk and quantity I was eating and that my thyroid was functioning well; however I did have a lump that had to be monitored … long story short, 6 months later I had 2 surgeries to remove my thyroid and I had an aggressive type of cancer that can’t be treated neither with quimo or iodine … so only option is to have surgery and to constantly check the tumor markers.
There is no history in my family of this type of cancer, so they determined that it was generated due to my stress levels; so lesson learnt … work life balance is very important and no job is as important as our health.
So what else to share? Any struggles this weekend? Oh yes … notes to self, stop buying grissini … basically the italian version of bread sticks and I them … but full of carbs, so need to get away from them ASAP!!
