@HonuNui I was thinking about you and Steve today. My oldest girl did her first Terry Fox run at school and I really wasn't sure how in depth they were going to explain cancer and the Marathon of Hope to 4 and 5 year olds. When I picked her up I asked her what she learned today (point of note: my kid is in Catholic school so God's/Jesus' involvement in school subject matter is a given).
"Mrs. H told us all about Mr. Fox and how he was very sick and the doctors took his leg away. But God loved him so much that he got strong to run really far and help people. Then he died and went to heaven. Mrs. H says being sick is scary but he never gave up."
While I'm trying to keep my *kitten* together I told her that of course he didn't give up, you never give up on things that matter. And she says to me,
"Mommy is that why God makes people run?" And I figure she's not quite five so her focus is shifting away from what we were talking about, "What do you mean baby?"
"Does God make people run so there is someone who won't give up?"
At this point I was both astonished by how much she understands and how right she is. God (totally cool if you don't believe in that sort of thing) has made you a runner for the same reason he made you Steve's mother- because you'll never give up. And SPAM is a pretty beautiful testament to the fact that in your love for Steve and your determination to better the world for people suffering from melanoma you are runner grade unrelenting17 -

@amymoreorless, be safe!
@RespectTheKitty, sending good thoughts and wishes your way. Sounds like several of us struggle with this as well so you're not alone. I know it's tough.
@HonuNui, owie! Those scrapes looks painful. And, thanks for sharing your story although @JessicaMcB almost made me cry!
On the running front, got in 5.6 today for a September total of 68.0 -
Thanks @skippygirlsmom and @lporter229 for your good luck wishes for my race. I'm kind of ready to get it over with! Not sure how things will go with this cold seeming to get a little worse rather than better - it has mostly moved to my head now more than my chest and throat though so, progress?
@lporter229 good suggestion about the shirt. I'll have to dig through my stash and see what I have ready to donate. I know I'm going to want something and I'm not sure how long before the start we'll have to give our drop bag up. It might have to be a Santa Claus themed shirt - I know I have 2 identicals of those I will probably never wear from races.
Getting my laundry done tonight and mostly packed. Tomorrow morning I'll do a quick shake out run, and then hit the road around noon. We have the race expo in the afternoon and a pre-race pasta dinner. Then off to our (hopefully not too crappy) hotel and (hopefully) get some sleep. Busses to the start begin running at 5 am and gun time is 7:45. Hope it's light by then1 -
I am more than happy to brag about my boy! Steve was a talented artist, musician and all around good guy. My favorite memory is one day hubby and I were singing a duet in harmony (we are choir members) and Steve burst into tears (he was about 7). "Why are you crying!?" "Because it's so pretty." That says a boatload about the kind of guy he was.
About 2 months before he died he was going up an elevator at a Reno casino. He had lost all his hair due to radiation and chemo. Two guys in the elevator beat him up for being "a skinhead." He was not upset at being hurt...he was upset at being characterized as a bad guy because of the way he looked.
When he died, on a Monday, word went out, and the house was suddenly full of people...about a hundred. At the wake, which his favorite tavern hosted-and donated all the food and drink, there were about 500....all wearing fake handlebar moustaches...he was very proud of his! Again, this for a quiet computer graphics guy. He had never met anyone (except those 2 elevator guys....) who wasn't charmed by him.
I could go on, but it's hard to type when you can't see thru your tears......
Thanks for asking....
@RunsOnEspresso It's certainly not too late to participate, but not sure if swag is still available for virtual runners-- I will ask the AIM people and hopefully post an update with my running update later today
And....for all of you virtual AIM at Melanoma runners.....please post a pic of you on that day (with medal and shirt if possible) so I can "collage" it with the physical runner pics. .....thanks bunches!
THank you.0 -
@JessicaMcB You and your daughter almost made this hardened SpEd teacher tear up. I'm going to have to steal that, so much wisdom there.0

Today's notes – I ran yesterday evening. It was the time trial for the opening of the half marathon training session, and I ran in three pieces. The first was getting from the store to the time trial loop site, and the last was getting back. In between, I ran the loop while the time trial was going on. It was beautiful running weather, low 60s fading to upper 50s as we ran.
The idea was just to run, not to push things. I ended up settling in about marathon pace, then let myself run at T pace for the last 800 meters of the 2 mile time trial. I slowed back down for another bit of cheering on trainees, and finished that part with around 5K of the total. As I was running T, not really time trial effort, I reflected that I might be being stupid.
Well. This morning, my ankle didn't like me as much. It's not hurt so bad that I can't do anything, but it didn't want to do calf raises with as much weight as I used yesterday. I bagged the calf raises, and bagged the idea of walking 10K steps today. After a day of relaxing, it feels a bit better. I don't think I've done permanent damage to myself, but I may have slowed my recovery down.
So . . . tomorrow is the first long run of the training session. I'm supposed to pace at 8:00 per mile. The distances are 5 miles (half marathon) and 8 miles (full marathon). Before yesterday evening I had been thinking I could stretch to 8 miles at an easy pace. Now, I'm thinking I'll run 5 if my ankle feels pretty good tomorrow morning, and may bag it if I don't see noticeable improvement from today.
Sigh. Things I might have done wrong include running too hard, too soon (top suspect); running too far (I think I would have got away with it if I'd kept it all truly easy); and not stretching after yesterday evening's run (a lesson I have to keep re-learning.)
Oh, well. Tomorrow is another day. Then it's likely I'll start October with a rest day.

I made my goal for September! I was a little worried with the rain that I might come up short, but I had a really great run this afternoon. It was almost chilly. I would have definitely been chilly if I wasn't running. I'm really looking forward to some nice fall runs.
Thanks for sharing @HonuNui. Steve sounds like a wonderful person and I am honored to run for him. @JessicaMcB sometimes the most profound things come from our children. Your daughter soumds like she has a beautiful heart.
Good luck on your race @katharmonic. I hope your cold gets better and isn't an issue.
I know there are a few more races comimg up this weekend. Good luck to all who are racing. I'm looking forward to the race reports.

@HonoNui thank you for sharing about your boy - he sounds absolutely wonderful! Your story is very touching

Today's run: 8.1 miles around campus, nice and chilly, perfect fall weather.
Monthly goal: 135 miles
Total: 124 miles
Any fun and exciting plans for this weekend? I am taking my 2 year old monkey to her first gymnastics class tomorrow - wish me luck!1 -

Drop by a Walmart or something and buy something new, but inexpensive. Then when you leave that behind whatever charity gets it, gets a new shirt for someone. Makes a nicer gift. Just a suggestion.

I like that thought. I like it a lot. Wise child you have!

Today was one of those days it was probably good I had a running buddy. And a running buddy who knows what I'm cleared for, and is pushing a stroller as well. Otherwise too far and too fast would have happened very easily. Work is a disaster right now, and was one of those days where I really just wanted to put on my water pack and run until I ran out of attitude. Last time I tried that though I ran out of water before I ran out of attitude... so would NOT have been a good decision currently. Instead, went for a nicely paced 1.8 miles. Which is still a "long" run lately. Which puts me at 9/10. Which means probably if ankle isn't too mad at me tomorrow, we will have to do another mile to fix that deficiency.
@MNLittleFinn I hope your SPED head butt was not as severe as the one my mother got last spring. She ended up with one heck of a concussion.
@katharmonic below is my friend's solution to those "start cold and warm up" sort of race weather AND "throw away clothes". She is an OR nurse, and so we have easy access... but just another idea.

This morning marked the last long run before the marathon, which I ran easy, and it rained. It was glorious. So, now that I've met my revised goal for the month, I have just one more week of taper with a grand total of just 17 miles spread over the entire week. The nice part will be simply running these miles in the evening and getting to have a nice long lie-in in the mornings (6am is considered a lie-in, right?).
Oh, and my replacement Scosche HRM arrived...one of the LEDs died on the last one, so they shipped out a brand new one free of charge; with over two years of warranty left, their service is really kinda good.
So that's a wrap for September...now to figure out how much I'll do in October. Good luck to everyone with a race this weekend, and I'll see you all next month.

@JessicaMcB Soon the Elk will be in Rut and they are the most dangerous of all the ungulates.
Your Daughter is a wise Gem.
@mnlittlefinn Massive Elevation Gains.
@honunui- Ouch! That looks painful! Thats a perfect example of why I wear Cycling Fingerless Mesh gloves on Bush-Mountain Trails. Thanks for the Steve Story.
@RespectTheKitty Hope your Doctor can find the right combination of Meds.
@Kristinegift- Oh no! Like others I can understand how you are feeling.
Hope a little rest and PT sets you right so you can enjoy the best time of year for running.
Out with the 5k Time Trial Training Group for a 3k All out=Time Trial shorty.
My goal was 5:00/km. I came in at 15:33 = 5:11/km. Oh so close to my goal.
Went out a little to fast ( 4:08/km ) had to make a very conscious effort to pull back as I knew this would destroy me before I got to 1k. Then had to work hard to hang onto the 5:11/km at the end.
09/01 150 km goal
09/02 6.5 km – 143.5 km - 006.5 km – YTD 1001.07

09/29 3.00 km – 31.3 km - 118.7 km – YTD 1112.67 km 3.0 km Time Trial. 5:11/km.
Have a long run planned for tomorrow morning - 20k - so that will leave me 11 k short of goal.
I am okay with that when you consider I had 2 - 10k Bush trail races this month and 1 - 6k Obstacle race/Hill climb. So the Mini-Tapers and Recovery days meant a reduced Km.
Planned October Events
October 14 - Pop-up 5km Fun Run and Time Trial
October 21 - Tangent Park Hills and Bush Trails ~ 20 km give or take a little depending on which combination of trails we run on.
October 28 - 7 Peaks - 36.2 km 1100m of elevation. Followed by 7 Pubs Sometimes the Pubs cause more hurt than the 7 Peaks.2 -
@RespectTheKitty My kindest thoughts go out to you.
@kristinegift Ow, I hope your calf trouble doesn't last long!
@HonuNui Yikes, that looks nasty! I love your story of 7 year old Steve. I was telling my running companions about you two yesterday.
@MNLittleFinn For some reason I thought you worked with special needs kids. You work in some sort of detention centre? Either way, you've got guts. (Understatement, looking at your running schedule. )1 -

Have not been on here since Monday, and catching up is nearly like reading a book, but it is an inspiring book.
@HonuNui It sounds like Steve was such a great person. I know you are very proud of him and surely he would be proud of you in the way you are choosing to honor him.

Wanted to push pace on my run today to see if I possibly have it in me to break 2 hours in my first HM on Nov 18. Ran first 8 miles in 1 hour 8 min for a 8:30 mile/min pace and could have gone further. I would need to do last 5.1 in 52 min. So I am hopeful I can break the 2 hour barrier for my race on Nov. 18. I did set my personal best for 10 k on this run at 51:30. Definitely helps that temps have backed off to the 70's with lower humidity. Stay safe everyone.

Okay, my goal was 100km for September. I exceeded my highest mileage month by 18km and got personal bests in 10km, 5km and 1km

Goal for the month 55 miles with a half scheduled at the end of the month. I am trying a "rest my legs" strategy in which a run a short distance and long distance in a week with lots of rest in between (filled with working at a job, sleeping, etc.)
9/27...taper week but ran 4 miles today.....mostly to get stretched. Race day on Saturday.
9/30. Slept rotten last night. Picked my packet up last night...must be my nerves. Will supply race report probably tomorrow.
I hope that it is enough. Plan is to run this half with fresh legs. My biggest concern is that I will not be able to keep up the pace that I want to be running.
9/1....9 miles... In zone all but 9 minutes. 13 minute/mile.
9/4...4 miles ...in zone all but 1 minute. 12:45 minute miles.
9/11...12 miles....focusing on running more at race pace....goal was to run under 14 minute miles. I haven't run this far in a while....noted that this felt easier than I expected especially the first 10 miles. Pace was 13:10 per mile on the average. My last half marathon was at the 12:38 pace ( in May). In zone only 24 minutes. My main goal was to stay relaxed. Hamstrings felt tight the next morning.
9/14...5 miles.....really not feeling like running at all....goal was to stay relaxed and to run at comfortable pace without focusing on zone running. pace was 12:48....in the zone 31 minutes.
9/17...5 miles.... in zone 24 minutes...pace was 12:24. Lungs felt great....head was into it....not as leg weary today.
9/22....5 miles ...in zone 33 minutes pace was 13:48.
9/25...9 miles....in zone 22 minutes. Pace was 13:53. Some cramping, but not bad. No soreness the next day.
9/27...4 miles.
total....50 miles
goal....55 miles.
Upcoming races... 9/30.....Indianapolis Women's Half Marathon

@HonuNui thanks for sharing. I don't mind admitting there were moist eyes watching your little photo montage of Steve.

So last night a set of races opened for registration. Seriously, it was like trying to get tickets for Glastonbury. We broke the internet.
Not helped by my computer choosing THAT VERY MOMENT to configure windows updates....
Anyway, I managed to be one of the 435 people to register for what Runners World has called the best marathon in the UK. Yup. I'm signed up for a marathon.
What worries me now is - the FASTEST female finisher took 3 hours and 43 minutes. I'm pretty much going to be looking at SEVEN hours on my feet I reckon (slowest was 8 hours something).
It's in June next year so plenty of time to train but eeeeek!!!8 -
@girlinahat You got this. You will be fine! Plenty of time to train, and if the last finisher last year was over 8 hours, plenty of time to run it.0

A short, easy run this morning before getting ready to travel for tomorrow's race. The weather was chilly at 46 degrees and I wished I had gloves on to start, so that's reinforced for my packing list. And the long sleeve shirt is a must. It was humid though so I got pretty sweaty even though it was so short.
Legs felt good, lungs felt ok, nose ran like a faucet. Another vote for sleeves as a snot rag My heart rate was a little high this morning during the run and I can't really breathe out of my nose at all.I'm really not sure how this is going to go but I'll assume I'll be fine and drop back the pace if it's not working out. My A goal is to PR, and my B goal is just to finish and have fun if that's not working out.
And that's it for September. I was just 2 miles over my conservative goal of 95 miles after taking several more rest days than planned. I'll see you all over in October. I probably won't check in until tomorrow night. No idea what October goals will be. I'll probably take off a week and reassess. Thanks for the good wishes everyone.3 -
Between Hurricane Irma and acute bronchitis, I pretty much lost half the month! Here's hoping nothing else happens to interfere with my tanning in October!0

Did a 5k today at a 9:38 pace, which I'm really happy about. I didn't make my September goal, but I'm satisfied with the progress I'm making. On to October...
