@eponine1984 I think everyone no matter how fast/slow far/short whatever they run will compare themselves to others. You are running faster and further than a ton of people. Just be you and be proud of what you do every single day.

I completed week 7 of C25K! 25 minutes of running (trudging, plodding) straight! Yes, I only covered 1.75 miles in that time, but I walked enough to get 2.75 for my total miles. I try very hard not to compare myself to others but it's a struggle. Oh, do I know about comparing myself to others. I've been running for over a year and I still run slow, only about 11 - 11:30 per mile right now. I get passed on the trail all the time, and it's especially demoralizing when I get passed by another woman!
I just tell myself that the people running faster than me probably aren't running as far.
Congrats on completing week 7!7 -

October goal: 70 miles
10/1: 7.7 miles
10/3: 3 miles (intervals)
10/4: 3.1 miles
10/5: 2.3 miles
10/7: 3.1 (race)
19.2/70 miles
I ran the Old Rip 5k today on a little town about 30 miles away. I had a PR of 30:46 and an average pace of 9:54. (That doesn't exactly match Strava, but that is my official race times). I was hoping to get under 30 minutes, and while I wasn't under I still feel really good about it. I can now say that I can run a 5k in 30 minutes and it was faster than my previous PR which was my main goal to beat.
"Old Rip" is a legendary horny toad that was allegedly buried alive in the cornerstone of the courthouse. When a new courrhouse was built 100 years later they discovers the horny toad still alive so they named him Old Rip and have a festival every year in his honor. They say he lived for several years after he was found. All of the awards were horned toads. This horny toad was made by the kids in the High School Ag department. All in all it was a pretty fun race.
Upcoming Races:
10/7/17: Old Rip 5K
10/14/17: Aim at Melanoma 5K (virtual)

@seanevan10 I think a rave near Ft. Worth would be fun. And congrats on the weight loss!
@eponine1984 It is really hard not to compare yourself to others. I struggle with that a lot! But one thing I like about running is I mostly feel like I am competing with myself. And I think that this group has some really supportive people in it.
3 -
@eponine1984 I struggle with this as well. It seems like there is always someone better, faster, stronger than me. I see people fly by me on the trail all the time. Kind-of depressing until I remind myself how far I have come. For example, I had a runner tell me "good job" as I was running past him this morning. I got all defensive thinking "what did he mean by THAT! Do I look like I am struggling that much? Is it because I am overweight?". I then I remembered that I was running UP a monster hill while he was running DOWN. He probably just ran that hill and realized how much it sucked.
FYI -The running community is so supportive! I was 70 pounds overweight, in the process of quitting smoking, dealing with sky-high cholesterol and blood pressure, and walking with 30 seconds of huffing, puffing, struggle-running when I got invited to train with my first running group. What a wonderful bunch of people! They cheered me on the whole way. If you can find a beginners 5K training group in your area I highly recommend it. It is always better to have supportive cheering fans.5 -
@kgirlhart great time on the 5K interesting history on the event
Great idea on the training group @amymoreorless3 -
@eponine1984 As you can see, you're not the only one to feel intimidated buy more seasoned runners. I've recently connected with a few local runners, all way faster than I am. I've had second thoughts about posting my runs to Strava (come join us there too. Which I currently rank 53,803 on this months 10k challenge! LOL!). But I'm not running to impress them. I'm not running for them. I'm not trying to fit in where I don't belong. If I'm slower, older, or gimpier than the top 20%, that's okay. I have plenty of respectable company here in the slow lane!6

October goal - 25.52/60 kms
Almost halfway there!5 -
Still in mostly recovery mode but ....
October Goals:
1-Don't injure myself trying too hard
2-Get back to a 10 mile run
3-Get my pace back to prior marathon pace on my 2-4 mile runs.
4-Find some better compression gear for this malfunctioning left leg
5-Do a better job keeping up with this thread
Oct 1 - 5 miles (left foot and leg still a little numb and tingling for the last 1.5 miles of this distance)
Oct 7 - 6.7 miles -
I really only ran exclusively for the first 5 miles and then my left leg started letting me know it was done. Last week when this happened, I kept going and I couldn't even feel my left leg hitting the ground by the end of my run and that messed with my gait and my calf has been sore all week. (My left calf still has some clot in it and the vessels have not entirely healed, so that leg still gets a lactic acid overdose when I push too hard). So I took a little time off and then stopped when I felt the pain was really starting to affect my gait and walked/jogged from there on. My left leg is definitely swollen and larger than the right even now with the compression gear and 6 hours post race. Ugh - this malfunctioning body of mine is getting on my nerves.
So only partially successful on goal 1 - no chance of trying goal 2 or I will really violate goal 1. Same goes for goal 3. So far no real success on goal 4. As for goal 5 - I have read every post here - but since I run so infrequently, there are always 5-9 pages of posts and I can't remember everyone I planned to congratulate or comment on. So, lots of excuses and no real progress right now.
Good luck to all of you racing this weekend! And to the race directors, too.

@wishiwasarunner sorry to hear tour leg is still giving you so much trouble. Here's hoping it gets it's act together for you1

Hoping the temps here in the Phoenix area drop down into the 80's some as it is hard to run in 95-100 degree weather

@Ray_Libby I'd be dying even in the 80s. You hot weather runners amaze me.1

Summer Goal: Get my marathon pace below 9 minutes.
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
10/14/2017 - Stop, Drop, and Run - Fireman style obstacle course - 5km
10/14/2017 - HAWAIIANS LOVE S.P.A.M. (Skin Protection Against Melanoma)
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
Started off thinking I would do like 20 (despite the 85-degree temp), but by the time I got to 9 I was thinking that I needed a rest day. Then I got lost and ran around for a bit knowing I could not be all that far from my normal running areas and the sun was in the west so I had an idea of a direction to head. Did not help. Eventually, I pulled out my phone and looked at the map in RunKeeper. Eventually found my way back home after 16 miles which puts me at nearly 60 miles for the first week of October.
Tommorrow I better take a rest day despite the nicer weather prediction.8 -
10/1 - rest (walk)
10/2 - rest (yoga)
10/3 - 4.1km
10/4 - cross training (workout dvd)
10/5 - 4.8km + a really wimpy strength workout
10/6 - rest
10/7 - 4.0 km
Total 12.9/55 km
My knees, which have been bugging me off and on since my 10K, were a bit stiff today. They aren't painful when I run, just when I go back up the stairs when I get home! I'm about due for new shoes so I'll head to the running store after I get my hair done next weekend (I am thinking I'm ready to do my whole head instead of just highlights, and leaning towards bright pink).
Ran in the afternoon just before dinner. Just a short 4km, aka 2 miles plus warmup & cool down. Very stiff breeze (gale?) coming out of the north. My jacket inflated on the way home. Definitely didn't break any speed records!
I signed up for the Jasper half marathon next spring. My family loves it there so I'm sure we will make a mini-vacation out of it. And now I definitely have to keep training over the winter!
Upcoming Races:
9/24 Heartbeat Run 10K 1:24:44 (11.1km)
1/1/18 Resolution Run 5K
4/8/18 Jasper Half Marathon
8/18/18 Edmonton Marathon 10K

PS Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians! I have 2 blue pumpkins roasting in the oven right now. Hubby is making pie and I'll make pumpkin bread out of what's left.4
-
10/7 - 1 mile walk, 2 mile run/walk, 1 mile walk. Calves didn't hurt. Seems like every time I try to cut my warmup below a mile my calves seize up. Oh well. I need the walking as much as the running. Hoping to make some progress soon bc I seem stuck.
ETA: I was proud of myself for keeping up with a guy in a crossfit shirt. He was clearly rehabbing an injured knee but whatever6 -
@eponine1984 As you can see, you're not the only one to feel intimidated buy more seasoned runners. I've recently connected with a few local runners, all way faster than I am. I've had second thoughts about posting my runs to Strava (come join us there too. Which I currently rank 53,803 on this months 10k challenge! LOL!). But I'm not running to impress them. @eponine1984 @Elise4270 - I think every new runner is intimidated by more experienced runners. I certainly was. In my first half marathon training program, I was intimidated because I was training for a half and I was in a group of runners training for marathons, and typically not for their first marathon. One guy in the group was training for Boston in the same training cycle that I was training to just *finish* a half marathon.
As far as faster . . . there's always someone faster. I may win a lot of age groups in local races, but when I go to national events I'm at best middle of the pack in my age group. It's just a question of what field you compare yourself with.
So what's more productive: Comparing yourself to someone who is faster and has been running for several years, or comparing yourself to the you of a year or two ago? Pick the wrong fast runner or endurance runner, and you'll never measure up; but if you aren't better than the you of a year or two ago, there's a good chance you can do something to change that.
So . . . I was the fastest pace leader for the Fleet Feet run this morning. But what really made me feel good was three separate newish runners asked me for advice on how to dress to run in this morning's rain. I gave them the best advice I could. ("It's 62º out. Dress for 62º. You're going to get wet. Embrace the wet. It will be more comfortable to be wet from the rain than to drown in your own sweat inside a waterproof jacket.") None of these people were in my pace group, but I like to think that I helped them be a little more comfortable in their journey toward completing a half marathon.
And that's what the running community is really about. It's not really about who runs a faster training run than whom. It's about enjoying the activity and doing what we can to help others enjoy it as well.10 -
PS Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians! I have 2 blue pumpkins roasting in the oven right now. Hubby is making pie and I'll make pumpkin bread out of what's left.
I was wondering why someone posted a pic of their bacon covered turkey today.... Mmmm bacon. Oink oink- @garygse you better hide Sir Bacon of oinkland.4 -
Turns out 2 small pumpkins make a lot of pumpkin.2 -

Finally some beautiful weather for a run. Down to 28c (82f) at 6am. Really enjoyable 7k this morning, very grateful for the reprieve from the humidity ☺2

Hot long run today... in the high 60's when I started and I had to have my DH come pickup Hobbes the Vizsla 4 miles in. It was getting just too hot for his feet and already in the 80s. By the time I got home it was 93 and I thought I was going to die... definitely too hot. I also had 3 people stop to tell me to make sure I was hydrating - I must have looked like I was going to die too
I do have a question... I am having issues when I am running with tightness in my hips and quads to the point I feel like I am hobbling for the first few miles off an on until they 'warm up'. I am rolling and stretching before I head out, doing some active stretches during the 1st mile and stretching and rolling afterwards. I thought having 3 days off would help but it really made no difference. Even with all of the active and static stretching and walking all over Costco this afternoon my quads are killing me. Note I have never had an issue with my quads other than after a race with lots of hills and really only occasionally with tight hips, nothing foam rolling and stretching didn't help. I have no clue what else to do and will look at any ideas you all might have for me.
@eponine1984 - So many good response already that I have nothing really to add except know that you are already successful because you are one of the few who are off the couch and running!
@Ray_Libby - I hear you on the heat! So Ca is supposed to cool a bit into the 80s this week and I can't wait, but I think we may be sending more heat your way.
@sarahthes - mmm pie and pumpkin bread, 2 of my favorites! Happy Thanksgiving!! BTW I love your profile picture! what a difference, you look amazing!
@HonuNui - Hang in there!!
