Asphalt is stinking HOT in the summer. Like burn your flesh hot.
Trails and rough terrain require a lot more care.
Cold weather was completely unmanageable
You have to be constantly on the watch for litter (glass, still lit cigs, and so on)
Your foot is exposed if you have to fight off a dog (yes this happen to me)
It has its benefits, especially in some terrain, such as a beach, dunes, streams and the like but it has its drawbacks too. After a while decided that, for me, the drawbacks were greater than I wanted to deal with.
Ditto! I'm an urban runner, and I don't think I have the patience to take the time to toughen my feet to handle asphalt, concrete, and cobblestone. However, ever since my beach races this summer, I've been contemplating adding a barefoot beach run every other week or so. I think it might be good for my feet and legs.
I would 100% do beach runs / races barefoot. Once you get used to it, I bet you are faster.
I agree! I think I'm going to try it this Monday....if the storm hasn't hit us, that is.0 -
I'm behind but I've been out for work. 130 miles this month with a Spartan Race at the end. Got rid of any sort of taper since this run is now part of training for a longer run in January.
Which distance Spartan are you running? I'm doing my first Spartan sprint in February. I'm excited as a bit nervous at the same time!0 -
I completed W7D2 of C25K last night - my first run of the month! 2.75 miles total of running and walking during warm up and cool down.
I've got a question for the more experienced runners (so, everyone) - my left index toe is giving me some trouble. It starts going numb as I run. Only on the left side and after about 10-15 minutes do I notice it. Some background:
I'm pretty new to running, I did ballet for years and years, but never had toe problems like this.
I'm overweight (stress eating + pregnancy) but I'm losing - I'm still 45ish lbs above my previous high weight, and about 50 lbs to goal. (I'm 5'7" and currently 193.6).
My baby is almost a year old - could pregnancy have thrown something out of alignment that's causing a problem? I gained 50 lbs with him (20 lbs from the baby, placenta, additional blood volume, 20 lbs of water weight - I retained all the water in SE PA last fall, and 10 lbs of Oreos) so I'm sure all the weight impacted my posture, gait, etc.
I only run on a treadmill at the gym. Previous attempts at running in years past had been outside.
It's happened with two different pairs of shoes.
I think those are variables that could be impacting me. There is a running store downtown that I've been meaning to check out, but introverted me wanted to check with the relative anonymity online first. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!0 -
@garygse , @ariceroni , @BruinsGal_91 - Good luck guys!
@seanevan10 congratulations on your loss! 40 pounds is super impressive. Way to go!
@RespectTheKitty I agree with @PastorVincent about getting a treadmill - they are very easy to find on Craigslist for super low prices. Also, check out Freecycle - something people just want to give theirs away. My husband and I bought a brand new treadmill for around $300, it's perfect. So there are options out there for sure.
7 miles today, was a lot hotter than I expected, so I cut the run short. I think I am off to a good start this month though, so hopefully I'll reach my goal this time
Happy Friday everyone! Stay hydrated and keep your race pics coming

@eponine1984 Ok, I am not one of the experienced runners...I just finished C25k myself. BUT, I do have the issue with the numbing. Mine is my right foot/toes. It could be from socks, your gait, insoles in the shoes. Also, it could be that when you run, you splay your toes out and it is pinched. There are a bunch of resources online on how to change the lacing of your shoes to help. I would start there.

Good 11 miles this morning. 63 degrees and sunny. My legs held up. I think this might be the most mileage I’ve done in a week and I still have 4 miles tomorrow!
My 8 year old has her first swim meet tomorrow! So it’s a big day with a lot of waiting around I imagine. She’s swimming in 2 events, the 50 breaststroke and the 50 free. Sunday afternoon she swims the 50 backstroke. I’m curious to see how she fares. I don’t think she is very competitive in the sense that it won’t bother her to lose, but who knows after this meet she may become more competitive.7 -
@garygse , @ariceroni , @BruinsGal_91 (and anyone else who is racing that I might of forgotten) — Good luck and have fun!1

A short run yesterday evening means I've learnt that I CAN just go out for 20 minutes, so there should be no more excuses.
Had Performance Reviews/Appraisals at work today. Given the last one was in 2003 it was hard to pin down where or when any improvement had happened. Left a bit early to run straight from work. This nine minute run/one minute work technique is really working for me. It takes me a good couple of miles to even get into the swing of running, but the only reason I stopped after eight cycles was because I was due out to dinner, had to drive home, shower and make myself respectable.
Wish I'd taken my phone on the run- there was a stunning example of a Shaggy ink cap mushroom by the side of the path just begging to be photographed.
Good luck all the people racing this weekend!!!3 -

I have some shoes that I can't tighten the laces too much or I get numb/tingling. I have a high arch but it drops so if I over tighten certain shoes, the arch can be pushed against the laces. You could be wearing the wrong shoe for your foot type. Or your body could be different due to childbirth (widening of hips or other things - I dunno, never been pregnant).girlinahat wrote: »A short run yesterday evening means I've learnt that I CAN just go out for 20 minutes, so there should be no more excuses.

I always take my phone and often stop to take sunset photos or anything that inspires me really. Guess that's the photographer in me. LOL1 -

I don't know why we always manage to trail run the day after my long run ha ha Skip and I had a blast today. For the first time I wiped out on a trail. I usually keep my eyes on the trail but I didn't see Skip in front of me and I picked up head up to see where she went and wham next thing I know I'm on the ground. Skip came flying back to help me. I said I'm good just broke both knees, an elbow and a few ribs. I didn't want to scare her but honestly breathing hurts. I'm sure I'll live though ha ha

@MobyCarp “be an adult” that just cracked me up
@Ryokat toad guts ha ha
@cburke8909 I love those kinds of scales
@fitoverfortymom can you take a picture of the stairs I’m trying to picture them. Sounds awful
@navygrrl we rented a scooter for Skip for like $75 a month, insurance covered it and it was the best investment EVER
@garygse I’m so worry about your friend’s sister. Good luck this weekend, can’t wait to hear about it.
@runtimer great pictures love the medal
@stoshew71 you’re welcome. I think I’m going to try to register for it.
I have heard bad things about ASTYM I’d be hard pressed to every do it. One of the girls on our XC team has been going to therapy to fix the damage that was done to her.

@skippygirlsmom Ouch! I hope your ribs are less angsty in a couple of days. I wreck myself on trail a lot honestly because I am famously stupid for trying to run my roads pace on tech trail- has me bleeding every time . Looks like you and Skip had a great day anyway.
@RespectTheKitty are you considering running in the dark dangerous because of the perceived trip/fall hazards? If so a lamp is a lot cheaper than a treadmill . If its more linked to your anxiety issues I would look into used treadmills- I had one, murdered it within a couple months but it did its job. I would rather run in the dark every time though.
@juliet3455 are the MEC races worth it? I always side eye the price tag on them like, "Wtf kind of race isn't trying to bankrupt me?" lololol
@MobyCarp holy I would have been uneasy about 400M at T as well! Hopefully you are feeling more up to it next week
Because tomorrow is my last long run before I race Whistler next week I begrudgingly took today off. Took the small people to the Farmer's Market, did most of the packing for the kids for next week, had several small panic attacks about whether or not my race gear game plan is going to have to change now that the forecast is calling for snow (prepare for very Canadian photos out of Whistler if it does ) and ate my weight in salad.
Eff rest days1 -
I am finally back from vacation and all the wedding shenanigans! My one and only daughter is now happily married and I think we are all starting to recover a bit.
I did manage to get out for a few runs (3 exactly) while I was there... Two in Seattle with her pup down the hills to Seward Park and then walking mostly up. I could run most of the way up but he, while so excited running down, got slower and slower behind me going up. It was absolutely beautiful and almost too warm.
My last run was purely for stress relief the day before the wedding and I took advantage of the opportunity to run on a local trail along the Wenatchee river.
Since I am behind I am putting my goal out there now for 100 miles... maybe a bit more we'll see.
I am not going back and catching up on the 16 pages of posts other than this page...
@eponine1984 - i have problems with my feet/toes falling asleep sometimes and it is usually related to my shoes being too tight. I have found that using an alternative lacing pattern sometimes helps. You can find alternatives here: https://runrepeat.com/top-10-running-shoe-lacing-techniques
@runtimer and @kevaasen - Love running in San Francisco! Love the pictures and the medal too.
@skippygirlsmom - hope you are ok and just had the wind knocked out of you! Are your knees ok?
@zdyb23456 - My daughter was a swimmer from age 5 through college... we spent many weekends at swim meets and while it was an awesome sport and she made so many great friends (her age and older that she looked up to for years) it is definitely a lot of hurry up and wait and wait and wait for a few seconds of excitement events. Hope you all have a great time and tell her good luck!
On barefoot running - I used to run barefoot on the beach but now I wear the soft, water type shoes. My feet were getting too cut up from the shells, rocks and sticks in the sand. I don't think I would ever run truly barefoot on the streets or even on a trail. I do however love my minimal shoes.

-
Great pictures @shanaber
@shanaber and @JessicaMcB I'm usually good at paying attention, I know my legs were already tired from the long run the day before so my feet weren't up a much as they should have been. I can jump over rocks, no problem getting over roots, up hill down hill, this area was almost like sand and that one darn root got me.
I'm have to get in the shower but I know it's gonna hurt ha ha0 -
Good evening all. So, I just realized that sometime this week I passed my mileage goal for the year. Everything from here on out is extra fun.13

October Goal: get thru the Aim At Melanoma run without losing it.....
So while setting up for the AIM at Melanoma run, all the people were there before the registrar, and picked over all the door prizes even before the race started. My helpers were pouring little vials of honey (like energy gels, I guess), then realized I forgot something...went out the back way, thru the warehouse and got yelled at by the chef there, had to climb the cliff to get around the building.....climbed a fence to get back to the start line, saw that all the kids had spilled their honey packs all over the place and now I needed to pour new ones......
(um, yep, the nightmares about coordinating the race are already starting.....)
10/1 rest
10/2 4.20
10/3 4.10
10/4 5.30
10/5 rest
10/6 4.40
Total: 18.00
@skippygirlsmom ...ouchy...
@shanaber best wishes to your daughter and her new mate.....LOVE the Wenatchee area!
@all weekend racers (too lazy to go back and see who is doing what!) Have a great time!
@RespectTheKitty I have seen treadmills at our freecycle area at the transfer stations (dump)...see if there is something similar around you.
Ticker is my goal for 2017 and progress to date:
Upcoming races:
AIM at Melanoma 5k 10/14/17
