No time to catch up, as usual! This has to be the busiest challenge on MFP!
I realized since I want to start my new warm-up routine I may not reach goal, which I already lowered from last month, but that's okay. I have never been good at warming up. I usually just walk fast for the first 1/3 mile and call that a warm up. I am getting faster at it - today was just 11 minutes.
@skippygirlsmom - I hope you are okay after that fall! Poor Skip must have been so worried. Love those pics!
@shanaber - love the pictures!

5.1 easy??? Probably too fast. 8:11 pace half zone 2 half zone 3. Rainy and muggy. Legs feel good, ready for Saturday. A good friend of mine who used to run marathons is coming to the race with my dad and I. He had to stop running after knee surgery a few years ago. So at my first marathon watching me will Be the two people I was most likely to be watching if I went to a marathon in the past.

Seriously humid this morning, it was like breathing water, thanks Nate. My knees and ribs still hurt, it made it hard to take a deep breath - well my ribs not my knees ha ha. But once I got into a groove at mile 4 it was okay.
Skip reached out to a Coach at one of the schools she's looking at, we will be there this weekend for an open house, but the team has a meet. He replied that he would come back to campus to meet her after their meet since it's nearby the campus. Too bad the tour isn't later and we can't go to the meet. She's excited to go and talk with him. He replied back to her introduction email in like 10 minutes so she's excited.
Running late, gotta get out the door to work.7 -

11/18 - (10k) Turkey Trek
12/09 - (HM) Fa La La Half Marathon
I managed a respectable finish in the race on Sunday. I finished 12th in my age group. The stairs weren't the worst. It was the last entire mile being up hill, so by the time you go to the stairs, you were totally spent. I did walk about .5 miles, but finished strong up the stairs. The finish line was actually at the top of the stairs, so there was no 'runway' to sprint to the finish.
It was the weirdest race. Almost entirely downhill until the last mile. To give you a sense of how nuts this was, my typical pace is around 11.5 mpm. On Sunday, my first mile was 9:45, my second was 8:53, and my third was *GASP* 16:45.
I definitely want to try another 5k in a flatter setting, just to see how I'd do, but I'll save that for after the HM training.

I had to cut my long run short this morning so I only got 5.7 miles in.
@kgirlhart - When you're feeling just a little bummed because you didn't run as far as you wanted, throw that line at some non-runners and watch their reaction. That can be kind of fun.Ran a fantastic and very fast (for me) 12k race in San Fran (7:40 per mile avg) and ran most of my total mileage above in the city with some fantastic views of the bay. Finished the rest of my mileage with a 10K race on Saturday and while I improved my official race time from my last 10k race earlier this summer it ended up being a slower pace than the slightly longer 12k a few days prior. Ultimately I think I started out to fast and it ended up teaching me a lesson that I will be sure to try and remember on future races.
@kevaasen - Race pacing is an art, and it can take a few tries to get it right. The theory is easy enough; you run a 10K slower than a 5K but faster than a 12K. But finding the right pace *for you* can be tricky. I don't think I got 5K race pacing right until after I'd done a few 3 mile tempo intervals in marathon training.

@fitoverfortymom - Interesting 5K course. You definitely can't compare results on that course to results on a more traditional 5K course. If waiting till after HM training seems like a long time, you could consider running a 5K with a flatter course during HM training instead of one of the speed workouts the training plan calls for.2

MNLittleFinn wrote: »@girlinahat you got the miles, I say it counts. plus, I'm assuming you were on your feet the whole time? That would mean you didn't really rest all that much, so it totally counts.
I realised something else about yesterday’s run. Not only did I not sit down (I stopped a couple of times to take photos or to get and eat the ice cream), but I RAN all of the running bits (I did a run/walk strategy). This wasn’t a flat run, not massively hilly but still, at no point (okay, I lie, I walked up the last up bit) did I give up and walk the ups.
So that’s an achievement in itself!!

I have two 10k races between now and the HM in December, so waiting isn't too much of a hassle. I really love the 10k distance, so I wouldn't want to sacrifice those for a 5k. After the HM, I'm going to decide if I want to try for 26.2, or focus on improving my times at 5k, 10k, or HM distances. A marathon doesn't sound all that appealing to me (although oddly an ultra does, go figure), but I guess you never know.
I live in CO, so it's going to be v cold here (it's v cold here and snowing at the moment after a 70 degree race yesterday).4 -

@fitoverfortymom - you are a tougher soul than me. My running buddy luckily shares my fair weather runner nature. She had me doing at least a 5k race a month to stay on the wagon. But it took a LOT of convincing to get me to do Colder Boulder in December... and that was only 5k- (We also didn't do another race until march)
half distance in Colorado in December is very brave of you.0 -

10/2-P90X3 Total Synergystics+ doggie walking
10/3-P90X3 Agility +7.1 hilly miles
10/4- P90X3 yoga + hour of walking the pup
10/5-45 minute weight training+5 miles+15 min doggie walk
10/6- P90X3 Dynamix + 50 minutes of doggie walking
10/7-10 miles + 25 minutes doggie walking with some little jogs thrown in
10/8-P90X3 Challenge (push up/pull up marathon) + 1.4 miles with Stella in the rain
Yesterday was one of those days that brought us nothing but steady rain all day long. I was fine with it since I had a lot of house cleaning to do. But my high energy pup was not too happy. I spent most of the day cleaning while she spent the majority of the day pestering me to throw her squeaky ball for her and running up and down the stairs like a lunatic. I did my P90X3 Challenge video in the morning (this video is ALL push ups and pull ups, for which I use resistance bands, but it's still a killer). I figured I might try and sneak a nighttime run in if I felt like it, but wasn't feeling obligated. However, around 8:30 or so the rain finally slowed to a drizzle and I decided to clip a light on the dog and head out to help her get rid of some of the extra energy, as she was still going at it with full steam.
About a quarter of a mile into our run the rain decided to start back up again and was coming down pretty good, but Stella seemed to be having fun, so we just kept going. It was actually a ton of fun to run with her in the dark and rain. Although I am sure that now, to all the people in my neighborhood that passed us in their cars, I am probably that crazy lady that runs in the rain with her poor dog.
On a side note, although I have been doing more strength training than running these days, I have done nothing to rein in my eating. In fact, I have found the lifting seems to make me even hungrier than running. I don't usually obsess about my weight, as I have stayed within a three pound range for several years now, but I think I am going to have to start watching a little more carefully if I continue to run this limited mileage. This morning I weighed myself and I felt like I was carb loading for a marathon.6 -
Weekends are crazy busy around here but I have today off work! Yeah. I'm needing it. I met with a running group for the first time yesterday. The "short" route was 6 miles. That is my longest run to date. Unfortunately, I hit stop on my watch and it split the workout into 2 runs. But i had my fastest mile, 400m, 1k, for PR yesterday. I'm feeling it. I had a niggle in my hamstring earlier in the week and yesterday and today, it's killing me. Think I'm calling my PT. And from the aggravation, the scale had me up 3 pounds. Boooo!5

Well, tried to catch up on the 5 pages but was interrupted by my son stopping to visit. Will just go ahead and try to keep up from here on. I hope everyone who raced this weekend had a great race, and hope nobody got hurt!4

Way late, way behind on everyone's activities. Spent >2 weeks in China and only ran 5 times on hotel treadmills. Beat my September goal of 80 miles, but barely. October goal 100? Have a half marathon this Sunday, not sure I am really ready, but should be able to at least finish.
26.26 miles of 100.6 -
@anitamistry1 CONGRATS! WELL DONE!!1

I feel exactly the same way about marathons and ultras. Luckily the marathon I have signed up for next year is an 'ish' in terms of measurement, probably closer to 27 miles. or more. who knows?

@allyphoe Yuck. Sorry about your teen's head.
@garygse - Awesome! You crushed your first marathon!
@lporter229 - Happy Anniversary!!!!LaurenFOB2301 wrote: »I guess I would say my goal would be to run 60 miles by the end of this month. (God, I hope that's not crazy for someone like me starting out?!)
Hard to say without knowing your condition - Can you run say 15-20 miles in a week? To get to 60 that is what you are looking at now. Say 5-7 miles on 3 days a week? Or 4-5 miles on 4 days a week? You will want at least 2 rest days if you are just starting out, maybe more.2 -
Phew! WORD OT THE WISE: if you take a rest day, you need to stay up with this thread anyways! LOL
I think I read most of the posts I was behind, if I missed anything important, sorry!4 -
Hey guys guess what. I got a treadmill!!!
I went on Craigslist and found a guy in the next town over who was selling one for $280. It works great too.
Getting it home was an adventure. We hauled it home in the back of my Kia Soul. Luckily it folds up so it fit okay, but it hung out the back a bit so we had to drive with the trunk open. Then we had to get it in the house. It JUST cleared the doors, phew.
Now it's in the back room, ready for winter. Thanks to everyone who suggested looking online. Now I can go cancel my gym membership.16 -

Congrats on the treadmill @RespectTheKitty!
I wanted to share a little project I did over the weekend. Yes, I sacrificed a pair of running socks to make one of those crazy barefoot running shoes using that spray-on Plasti-Dip stuff! While part of me was torn, making something that might not work, or even be that great, while sacrificing a nice pair of socks, at the same time I couldn't resist. Plus, it was just one pair of socks, and I didn't use the newer ones either.
I started with a pair of Injinji toe socks. I stuffed them with plastic wrap to fill out the toes and sock and formed into a "foot shape".
As you can tell they are not "new", but not in bad shape either.
The product I used...
After the first coat...
30 minutes later I applied another coat...
I applied 5 or 6 coats total (lost count). After two days drying time, here they are...
A quick test fit...
A side view to see the coverage...
I think the heel could use more coverage. I can easily apply more, of course. This happened because the product shrinks as it dries, so the heel is pulled in a little. Maybe if I had used a pair of socks a size larger it would have fit perfectly. These are definitely ready to use though, and I will run in them this afternoon.
I'll post a review afterwards.
My initial thoughts are that they are OK. I'm not sure this product is as "waterproof" as promised on a sock as I saw it "stretch" with the fabric. I suspect there will be some leakage. Not that the coverage is enough to keep them from getting wet in the rain or a puddle, but if running on just moist ground a waterproof base was going to be a nice touch. Not so sure it will work that way.
They feel comfortable though. They feel like thick socks. I have full foot mobility for sure. I am curious as to how much protection they offer though.10 -
It's tapper week. Extra rest day today. 5km speed session at the track on Tuesday. Time Trial at the clubhouse on Thursday. Half Marathon on Saturday.4
-
@WhatMeRunning That actually looks really cool. I'm looking forward to your review. I'm definitely not up to running in minimalist conditions, but maybe one day.
I'm sorry to read that so many of us are injured. I'd tag individuals, but I'm terrible at remembering everyone I wanted to tag.
I'm still waiting on a referral to ortho. Apparently you should never get injured at work. I have huge amounts of venting, but none of it pertinent really. I'll feel much better once I finally get a cast or something. The adjuster wants me to return to work tomorrow. If I worked in an office, maybe that would be okay, but I work in a grocery store. My coworkers and I are coming up with amusing ways I can zoom around the store in the electric cart. I'm afraid that I'll hurt my ankle even worse, especially since I only have a splint until I can see ortho.
Keep running all! I'm here cheering everyone on, no matter what your goals are.5 -
@navygrrl Workers Comp always take forever. I'm sorry you have to deal with that but zooming around a grocery store could be fun!0

Thanks @MobyCarp. 100% agree on it being an art. I was "fooled" by my split paces on the 12K and was applying the logic that I could do the 10K faster, however I was way too aggressive in the first 5K (might have been a good target pace for only a 5K). Net is I ended up slowing down for the 2nd half. In retrospect, if I would have started slower - in theory, I should have had some more gas in the tank to finish with a stronger 2nd half i.e. negative splits and perhaps an overall faster time. Still was a 10K race PR....so I am happy with the overall result.
Also, my other thought is, better to practice and experience this now on a relatively short race vs on my 2nd half marathon in late Nov or when I look to run a full marathon sometime next year.2
