unplanned rest day today. With in-laws over, I ended up entertaining them and looking after little man, while my wife went to a baby shower. Tomorrow is a rest day too, but that's OK with me. I'll run Tuesday and Wednesday, rest Thursday and probably do a VERY short, like 2 miler on Friday. Then comes Saturday. I'm trying VERY hard to not think about Saturday.6

Over halfway there!
6 miles today! That's the most I've ever run in a single day in my life!! I ran the first 5 miles today without any breaks at an avg. 11:49 min pace. I had never in my life ran 5 miles straight before.
Seven weeks ago, I was taking breaks every 1/3 mile.
I ran mile No. 6 tonight! I'm pretty pumped right now.
It's wonderful to have this community to share the news. Seeing all these amazing goals (100, 200+ miles) is inspiring.

A couple of days behind in reporting! I was super busy at work on Friday so I got up and walked in the neighborhood for 45 min at 4:30 am. Saturday was my youth YMCA team's XC meet so I didn't have time to do my normal Saturday run, but ran about 1 mi chasing them to cheer them on. My team was awesome --out of 5 runners I had two 1st place and two 2nd place in their age groups and we got 2nd overall. My 8 year old son finished 3rd overall and 2nd in his age group (the overall winner was also from the 8-9 age group rather than the older kids!). This morning I ran 4 mi on trails with a bit of warm up and cool down walking. Afterwards did this really cool restorative yoga workshop with live digeridoo and other instrumentation. Hope to do my long run tomorrow since I am on vacation this week!

Today's notes – I frequently find it hard to get started running on Sunday. Today I managed to hit the road at 4:45 PM. The season being what it is, I wore a reflective harness and had lights because I thought I might run until after it got dark enough to need them.
Just got out the door, and it started to sprinkle. No big deal. It turned into a light rain. That's cool. Just turn on my lights, because drivers won't expect to see an idiot out running in the rain.
The wind picked up, and the rain got heavier. Before I'd gone a mile, I was running in what passes for a thunderstorm in upstate New York. Oh, yeah. The little banner on TV told me we had a thunderstorm warning until 4:45, which was about when I started running.
I keep running. I will fear no blisters, for I am wearing Darn Tough wool socks and old, well fitting running shoes. The rain gets harder. Then the sleet starts hitting me. (Technically, given the temperature and weather conditions, it was probably hail; but it was small and felt like sleet.) Well. Hail is dangerous, and sleet is very uncomfortable. I turn around and head toward home, which puts the sleet at my back.
The original intention was to run 7 to 10 miles. If this doesn't let up, I won't even make it to 3 miles. But it lets up, and turns into a light rain that is fine for running. I'm not the only runner; I saw two other solo runners while running through the campus of RIT. Dither a bit about route and distance, reach a compromise of turning to stay close to home with the option to add more distance late. Listen to my ankle, and decide that the direct route home is most prudent. End up with 6.51 miles, which is only a little shorter than the short end of what I would have run in dry weather.
The funny motivational thing is, if it had been raining when it was time to go out, I might not have got myself to start running. But because I was already running when the rain started, it was pretty easy to keep going. I got wet, and I got a bit of water inside my hand held Nathan Zephyr Fire 100 light; but the light still works. I expect it will dry out, eventually.
In other news, my recovering ankle is enough better that I signed up for a race on October 29. Race 4 in the Pete Glavin XC series is the USATF Niagara region cross country championship, and my club will want to field teams in all the age groups. It's also a race in the USATF Niagara Runner of the Year series, not to be confused with the Rochester Runner of the Year series. I've already clinched my age group for RROY; but now I'm looking at the USATF Niagara ROY series.
I hadn't been paying attention to the USATF Niagara ROY series until I saw an email that said I was leading the masters men. So I went and looked up the rules, what races were in the series, and the detailed standing. It looks like no one else over the age of 40 was paying attention to that series either. Scoring for masters is by age grade placement. I have run 3 of the races, and if I run a 4th one and a couple of really good runners don't run 2 more, I could sneak in as the USATF Niagara Masters Men Runner of the Year. So I gave that a chance to happen, recognizing that if I do sneak in it will be because the guys who consistently age grade better than me didn't show up.
Still, I think it would be cool to win any sort of masters title when I'm beyond age 60. From my point of view, "masters" usually means young guys. Scoring by age grade gives me a chance, because I'm more competitive by age grade than by raw finish time.

Unfortunately, today was not my day. This morning, I woke up to higher than normal temps as projected but noticed it felt more muggy out than I thought was forecasted. The fact that I didn't need a coat before a race in the middle of October in central Ohio is telling. I also started the day feeling a little under the weather, but bounced back okay after taking some medicine, as has been the case off and on the past few days. I was up and out the door by 5:20 and downtown and parked by 5:45. The running group I was meeting was supposed to leave for our meeting spot around 6, but we didn't end up leaving until almost 6:40 and I spent those extra minutes thinking of how I could have slept longer. I walked down, took care of gear check, spent some time waiting to go to the bathroom for the third or fourth time, met up with my step-sister and her friend near my corral and only had to wait about 5ish minutes in the corral before our corral started moving up and starting.
I crossed the start line at 7:43 and those first 2 miles were a little tough for me, as they usually are. However, I got into a groove and felt pretty good for about the first 10 miles. So good at times that I had to keep reminding myself that I was running a FULL marathon and needed to slow myself down. I should have realized that the sweat that was rapidly forming after the first mile was my first indication that things wouldn't exactly go my way. Around mile 10, it felt like a switch was flipped and all of a sudden, I felt awful. Like, sick awful. You know when you are sick and everything physically feels 10x harder? That was me at mile 10 with 16 more to go. I'm pretty positive I had a fever as I have a low-grade one now. I also started to feel the effects of some unevenness in my gait with my right knee, calf, and hip becoming tight. I let myself slide back to a more manageable pace that was slower than what I wanted my overall average to be but I had a little in the bank, so I thought I'd be okay. I battled with whether I should turn with the half marathoners at 12.5 miles, but I knew I would have been so disappointed if I didn't turn. I regretted that decision miles 13-18. At mile 13, I took the Tylenol I brought and I also started experiencing some cramping in my knee and calf. I did a LOT of walking miles during this time and even stopped at a medical station for about 60 seconds to see if they could take my temperature (they could but only had an oral thermometer and I had literally just downed some cold water, so I declined). There were several points before mile 18 that I came very close to deciding enough was enough, but I ended up seeing a familiar face from my running group and decided to keep going as he was having a hard time too and we were encouraging each other to keep going. We played leap frog for a little bit, but I started feeling better around mile 18 as the Tylenol finally started to kick in (and I'm sure all the walking helped a bit too). I practiced the miles around 16-18 many times as it's one of the tougher uphills of the race and I think that helped knowing that I was past that. I started running a little faster (relatively) and for longer stretches, but the cramps kept coming and I had to walk about ever 1/3-1/2 a mile but I was able to walk for shorter periods, mainly just until my muscles stopped seizing. The last 6-8 miles, I started getting very windy with 20mph winds and some spitting rain around mile 24. Also, the noticeable lack in aid stations the second half left me a little dehydrated, but I was happy to have my handheld water bottle with me, which I filled with a cup of water or gatorade each station. I knew that a PR was out the window after about mile 15, let alone the other goals that I had. After all the obstacles that I overcame during the race though, I am happy just to have finished. This was the first marathon that I truly didn't think I would finish. My official time is 4:56:36, so I was under 5 hours and about 7 minutes faster than my last marathon in Chicago around this time last year.
After talking with others afterward and seeing many other posts on Facebook and Strava, this was a horrible race day across the board. I found out after I was done that after a certain point, they started diverting runners that were still on the first half of the course to finish with the half marathoners. The next few days, I'm going to focus on recovery and healing. I'll then come up with a game plan of what I would like to do between now and the New York Marathon in a few weeks. The issues I had with my right leg tells me my focus needs to be on doing what I can in that short time to strengthen those muscles.

Today was shoulders & triceps for me. I swear I am regressing instead of improving on this body part. Hoping to get out tomorrow to hike & find fall colors. I'm having a small, minor, nothing procedure in the morning so no lifting for a few days.1

@garygse Sorry to hear about the lack of organization at the bubble run, but sounds like your family still had fun. I kind of had the same experience at a color run back when I first started running. Some of the novelty races such as the color run, bubble run, glow run, etc. aren't put on by the regular running companies and definitely lack in certain areas.

@PastorVincent My PR is 4:42 from 2014. 2015 and 2016 were not good training years for me, which equaled slower times (and over 5 hour marathons). Last October, I finished the Chicago Marathon in 5:03, so today I finished 7 minutes faster in 4:56.3 -

@MobyCarp, you can only beat those who show up - if everyone within a 100 miles showed up to every race I run, I would never finish in the top 10. I am still proud when I do
I also think age-grading is a great way to be and stay competitive, and while I don't particularly care about "elite" runners in terms of role models (too skeptic, I'm afraid), I have gotten to know some fantastic runners who compete in the over 60, or even over 75 categories - and to run at anything close to their level would be a real goal for me. If someone beats me by 15 minutes in a half marathon, I don't really care - but if someone 50+ or even 60+ is racing with me for the finish, I have nothing but respect.4 -

I haven't signed up for the 5k yet and my husband has a doctor appointment that conflicts with it. But no sympathies about getting "a banana, a brownie, small chocolate milk and a half filled cup of potato leak soup" afterwards. After yesterday's Melbourne half marathon, we had to queue for ages and I got one tiny cup of sports drink, and that's it.

I feel good after my ten miler yesterday. (I'm taking a rest today though.) I had to smile during my run. I'd got to just past the eight mile mark and I was feeling a little weary when I ran past a woman and her young daughter. I heard the little girl says, "look mommy, she's running! And she's going fast." I wasn't going fast by any means, but damn, it sure put a spring in my step.10 -
Good morning all. Took another rest day today. I figure that rest is probably a high priority right now, since I could potentially be moving for 18 hours on Saturday. My monthly goal is pretty much in the bag as of now, assuming my weekend even just goes OK, so I'm feeling pretty good, just keeping working on the mental aspects of what I'll be doing.

I think I'm going to have to cut my mileage back. I now have a pain on the outside behind of my left ankle that seem connected to my little toe.
I should be adding miles. Not subtracting them. What the heck. I'm thinking about limiting my runs to 3.5 miles at a time, every other day and not worry about a monthly goal.

What a difference a day makes, I don't know what happened to me on Sunday but honestly I thought I was going to die .75 of mile into the 3.1 with Skip. At one point around mile 2 I actually stopped and sat down. I couldn't get my breath I couldn't breathe when I was running. Today I felt great did my 6 miles at a consist 12:14 pace. Go figure.
@BruinsGal_91 that is so sweet, I gotta admit nothing put a spring in my step more than a compliant or a cute guy running by ha ha
@MNLittleFinn if you feel you need a rest day, you need a rest day. You’ll have a long race in front of you, as they say the hay is in the barn so it’s about getting mentally ready now.

Could have been the weather. What was the dew point yesterday when you ran, vs today? A high dew point could easily cause that experience. Or you were more tired/stressed/etc than you thought.

So how are all of you Packer fans feeling today? As a Vikings fan, I feel great! Sucks to see Rodgers go down, great to see the Pack go down.
The only two Packers I ever liked are Brett Favre and Daryl Thompson. Daryl was a running back from my home town, and I played against him in high school. He currently heads up an amazing charity in Minnesota for disadvantaged kids. Similar to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program but ties the relationships to athletic pursuits. My current 10k PR race is a race his organization, Bolder Options, held.

Mid-month and halfway to goal. Not too shabby!
I scoped out the course for the 10k in two weeks, except I ran it in reverse (accidentally). I could re-run it this weekend and just extend parts of it to get the 7 miles I need for my long run, or just try and mentally adapt to the elevation in reverse. The way I ran it had basically one larger hill at a steeper incline with a lengthy but gradual downhill portion, whereas the reverse has a gradual incline for a bit longer with a steeper but shorter downhill portion. I think I'm overthinking it and I'll just do the 7 miles on the path I was planning anyway.
I also tried eating before my 4.5 miler this morning. Not sure I liked it. I'll try it again on Wednesday when I do the same mileage.
I'll do the most miles this week than I ever have before (and will continue to do the most miles from here until December).

At one point around mile 2 I actually stopped and sat down. I couldn't get my breath I couldn't breathe when I was running. Today I felt great did my 6 miles at a consist 12:14 pace. Go figure.
Could have been the weather. What was the dew point yesterday when you ran, vs today? A high dew point could easily cause that experience. Or you were more tired/stressed/etc than you thought.
@PastorVincent I'm not sure about the dew point, but 20 degree difference I'm sure was a big part of it. I knew I was tired from Saturday's college visit so I'm not surprised yesterday was so awful.1
