What nobody tells you about losing weight

This cracked me up!19 -

I just had it this morning... and it hurts if you sit on hard surfaces too much. Stupid anatomy.3 -
How much easier and more enjoyable running would be now that I'm carting around ~45 few pounds! Now I look forward to my runs - at my heaviest, I still ran but really had to convince myself to do it.18

Who knew that I would be looking forward to eating veggies more than the main protein18

^^This but 110 lb difference.13 -
That when you look at side by side before/after pictures, you'll struggle to wrap your head around the idea you're no longer the the before anymore.27

For me, it's getting things out of the wardrobe I haven't been able to wear for a couple of years.
And WANTING to go to the gym instead of feeling like I should.
But I hate people trying to "feed me up" because I'm smaller now. I've realised how many people are feeders!
I love your profile pic
you should see the "before" picture - hahahahaha

No one told me how much more aware of the negative impact of excess weight on daily life I'd be. In my own life, and in other's lives. Not in a judgey-better-than-you way, but in kind of a sad, "I wish you would have this revelation too" sort of way; the way you see someone doing something self-destructive and know you can't say anything and know there's avoidable tragedy going on. It's actually heart-breaking.
So true! Especially heart-breaking when it’s your husband.
Or adult son7 -

That people would be nicer to me.
I keep expecting people to scowl disapprovingly at me in the street, but nowadays they often smile instead. I go through life mentally crouching against metaphorical blows from strangers, and I don’t get them.
I mean, it’s nice and all, but it also makes me really angry. I never realised how much I’ve always been walking into the teeth of a gale of fat prejudice, and how people’s bias has affected my emotional development. I’m a bit cross about that.45 -
THIS 100%! Some say it’s due to more confidence and a better outward attitude, and I guess that might be true for some.
But for me, I was always confident and extroverted. I gained weight after I got married and started “nesting”. It was shocking to me for years how badly people would treat me when I was 90 lbs overweight.
Now that I’m fit again, it’s back to what I remember. strangers smile at me...stop their cars and let me cross the street...help me with my luggage on the plane, offer to buy me drinks, etc. I even got a long deserved promotion at work and was treated with far more respect...all things I took for granted when I was younger and cute.
I don’t turn any of it down! But it’s bittersweet, to be sure. That people would be nicer to me.

This is so *kitten*ed up and yet so true. Has either of you heard Elna Baker's story on This American Life about her 110-pound weight loss? I'm reminded of your comments because, with the eloquence of a professional writer, she characterises the difference between the way the world treats her before and after weight loss as being like that classic SNL skit where Eddie Murphy experiences the world as a White guy. I won't give any more away but she goes deeper and darker than that on how and why she's willing to trade off her disappointment with realising how inconsistent and hypocritical the world was about that stuff. Worth a listen if you're interested: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/589/tell-me-im-fat?act=213 -
It has not been my experience that people are nicer to me after weight loss. It may be cultural, but I haven't noticed a difference in the way people treat me, with a couple of exceptions: the age of men who check me out, I seem to attract younger men now, and women on the bus or in waiting areas are now less likely to use weight loss "advice" as a conversation starter (yes, that's normal). Strangers in general, though, don't treat me any differently. They we just as nice to me then as they are now: doors held open, smiles, nods, polite mannerisms. The whole package is the same.16

Treat yourself when you know you deserve it. Treating yourself doesn’t have to be with food; it can just be a little reward when you’ve accomplished something that’s worth it to you. For me it's a new piece of clothing when I’ve gone down a size.17

Pockets go away
I know women's clothes are notorious for having tiny pockets but when I was in plus sizes I didn't really notice/ thought it was a little exaggerated. Sure they could be bigger but I could fit my hands in them and I've never really been one to keep things in my pocket; that's what purses are for. Now that I'm in a size 10/12 though, my fingers can barely fit in the pockets, forget the rest of my hand. I definitely know what other women have been complaining about. This is ridiculous....23 -
When seeing a friend I hadn't seen in a while:
Her: <hugs me> Ah, you're all bony!
Me: You should feel my hips.
Her: <feels my hips> Ah, they're even bonier!
Me: I didn't mean literally!30 -
Weight fluctuations start to get less scary. The first 20 pounds or so, I was glued to my scale. Any movement up was cause for devastation. Over 40 pounds down? I don't bat an eye at 3-4 pounds up or down. I know that the scale won't be the same the next day.... or even the next hour.54

Nobody told me how off balance and clumsy I would get while I was losing my excess weight. I guess my body was used to carrying 250 lbs and when I was dropping weight, it got confused.
Now that I have been a healthy weight for awhile my balance has returned and I don't get bruised as much from bumping into things. And now I can easily put on my socks without sitting down, I could never do that before.24 -
Clothes really are cheaper when you are smaller. Every time I go to the clearance aisle, I find what I'm looking for in my size. In the past when I'm shopping the remaining clothes typically on clearance are either XS,S ( size 2 or 4) or XXL,XL (size 14) or greater, rarely anything in between. I was a medium/large. I recently bought a brand name blazer at Macy's which is currently full price( $139) at other locations and retailers. I got the last small size 4 on clearance for $41.
Also, before I used to be worried about the excessive peeing overnight that comes with weight loss whooshes. Now when I get them once a month after TOM I'm excited and looking forward to my new lower weight in the morning.28 -
My most recent NSV is that whilst trying to re-lose the 15lbs that I gained (definitely showed me that I need to own a scale!), I have noticed that I don't look nearly as big as I did before. I have also recently started working out again and the online videos that I use seem much easier than they used to, even when I was smaller!13

Exact opposite for me
When I was heavier I found myself having to try on a whole bunch of things because what I thought would fit no longer did. Now I just throw on whatever because I know it would fit even if it's a bit big (and oversized tops are en vogue anyway, who knew my lack of interest in being trendy would make me trendy haha )23 -
That IS funny, AmusedMonkey! Congrats on being trendy!0

Yep-I agree. When I'm heavier I spend far more time getting dressed as I'm trying to cover up my fat and still look nice- when I'm thinner I'm not hiding in my clothes- makes dressing much faster and easier for me anyway.7 -

Unless you have more than 12, it's likely normal variation.
While rarer, cervical ribs are possible, too. Feel free to Google about it for images of.
