WOMEN AGES 50 + FOR NOVEMBER 2017

NYKaren, I love reading articles that reinforce what I already know. Thanks. One of the ideas I embraced when I started this weight loss journey was to seek every opportunity to be active. Besides my regular dog walking, walking with friends, line dance classes, and riding my exercise bike, I just move around a lot. I do a lot of chores that require carrying things from one place to another and don't sit down much (except on the exercise bike). I limit my time at the computer.
Kelly, about drinking water, I don't wait to be thirsty. I drink water the same way I take the pills that my doctor prescribes....I drink water on schedule and keep track of how much I drink. Last month Jake heard from his doctor that he needs to drink more water so he bought a big reusable bottle to help him keep track and he makes marks on a piece of paper to keep track.
Katla, we were fortunate that we both were ready to sell our motorhome at the same time. I know it must be a great burden to you and your husband deciding what to do about the boat that has brought you so much happiness.
Machka, I think all the soy and veggies in my diet were the reason that hot flashes were not a problem for me.
Rye, your cats are adorable. I'd love to have more cats.
JJoyce, sorry to hear about the pill confusion. We have a very careful plan with little bags well labeled and even so have occasionally made mistakes. Fortunately for us, none of our meds is a sleeping med.
Another day with rain predicted so I don't know when I'll get my new bulbs planted. Next week promises some drier days.
Barbie from damp and chilly NW Washington2 -
Barbie & Heather - I appreciate the reminders about giving "experiences" - I now will be giving gift cards to restaurants and ignoring the Black Friday temptation to buy more stuff for people who already have too much stuff!
Karen in VA - I am going to have to dig out my Snickerdoodles recipe. Since I don't have co-workers to gobble down the extra's, I now roll cookie dough into balls and pop them into the freezer, which sort of works. I have been known to thaw a dozen at a time instead of four tho...
Janetr - I checked out your Facebook page for the ornaments.... quite stunning to see them all at once! Hope sales are as brisk as you want them to be! I'm sure all the relatives and kids getting these keepsakes for gifts this year will have great memories!
Cheri - you are a girl on the go. Glad the visit with the folks in IN went well - sounds like you have the art of traveling fine-tuned. Good luck to your daughter with her new house!
Katla - you've had many enjoyable travels in your boat. Sorry to hear your DH isn't up to working on it with you. I know we've had to give up things we enjoyed due to my DH's health. I keep looking for new "adventures" that don't take a lot of physical strength or agility anymore. In an odd way, I think the puppy is fulfilling that need for us.
Yvonne - I've never put sausage in my chili but I have some hot Italian sausage in the freezer right now that I bet would go well. When I make chili, it normally ends up with pieces of left over roast beef I had in the freezer, ground beef, various cans of tomato juice/chopped tomatoes/leftover spaghetti sauce, two or three cans of different types of cooked beans and of course the chili seasonings, onions, etc. I have even added a can of store bought chili that's past the "best by" date. So lots goes into the freezer.
Karen in NY - that was a terrific article about the biggest losers and exercise. I am amazed sometimes that my weight is staying where it is (and even losing a teensy bit) despite overindulging in desserts and candy... I am so thankful for the strength training which seems to have kicked my metabolism up a few notches. I think adding foods like nuts and avocados daily helps as well.
Terry - you are looking FABULOUS!!! If I lived near you I'd stop in for some of your DH's hot chocolate! Not sure about the toast but I think dunking a couple Snickerdoodles might be appropriate.
Meg - that is crazy they can't come up with a firm date. It's not like you live 15 minutes away - seems like it's going to take planning and coordination to make the trip. Hopefully you'll hear something very soon. I know for me, I'm such a planner and scheduler that it's super hard to "let go and let God". Hugs going out your way. Keep us in your pocket!
Joyce - glad your pill mix-up didn't have any major bad effects but it sure messed up your day, didn't it? I have seen gigantic pill keepers with many compartments where you can put the whole day's worth in one keeper. Luckily I take mine with supper but if I had more I'd probably get one of those. Do you think something like that might work for you?
Marcelyn - I am totally impressed with your latest batch of pots. Are they all done and ready to use or is there further glazing and firing in the works?
Margaret - so glad you found the problem with your wonky internet. Critters. Our printer has been on the fritz too, the wireless connection somehow dropped out from this laptop and doesn't want to get reinstalled so I have to boot up our ancient PC to print anything! I told DH next one we get will have a USB cable (if they still make them). GGRRRR.
Lisa - I always look forward to your blog and this group with my morning coffee! Thank you for your inspiration!
Rori - so sorry to hear that your great caregiver left - maybe she works for another company now. Hope the new one works out well. Sending healing thoughts to DH regarding his melanoma. Hope the new boss at your work gets in the groove and is easy to communicate with/work with. Always unsettling when someone new comes in.
Michele - Your exercise is paying off! Regarding bone density scans, I got a copy of my DXA report from my doc. While it's showing the overall cumulative score is a bit worse - osteopenia in lumbar and in the femur - I noticed that the femur score was the teensiest weensiest bit better than 3 years ago. I emailed my doc - she said don't get excited, it's doubtful that 6 months of strength training (ankle weights!) would have improved it. I told her I'm still celebrating because it's not worse! I hadn't been taking much calcium in the past few years. So, I'm going to take calcium citrate daily, eat more foods with calcium and keep on with the strength training and see how it does. Looks like unless we are on estrogen, our bones do get thinner as we age. So all the more reason to stay active and do our weight bearing exercise.
Felicia - I am excited about your trip to Israel! What a great opportunity!!
Machka - glad your life is returning to normal after that dental surgery. I had lunch 2 days ago with a couple girlfriends and it seems the whole conversation was about bad dentists, dental pain, etc. YIKES! My tooth has been hurting ever since. Have a checkup in 2 weeks... my dentist doesn't use nitrous or anything other than novocaine so we'll see. He can prescribe valium. If there's a root canal in my future (I might need 2, side by side) I dread that because my DH will have to drive me (I may want to be sedated!!! and I mean out cold!!) to the endodontist in the big city 30 miles away and I don't trust his driving anymore in heavy traffic. Heck, I don't trust my own driving in it! I'm sure it will all work out. Just want it all behind me.
Lately, I've said I don't care what I weigh as long as I can fit in my pants! I'm changing that a bit to add "as long as I'm healthy". Seems like this has really hit home the past month or so with worries about my hoarseness and coughing, allergies, tummy upsets, bone scans. I realized if something were seriously wrong with me and I couldn't eat.... then the goal of being thin would be insignificant.
So I guess when I see new folks coming into this group seeking advice, I echo what many others have said, pick one goal that's good for you - exercise or improving eating ... meaning focus on nutrition and a balanced diet and cutting out sugar and eating healthy fats. Maybe even meditation. Find something you like that you can make into a habit. You don't have to do it all at once. Maybe that daily walk or 5,000 steps. Get good at one thing, then add another. Write it down, keep a log or spreadsheet and take time to review your progress once a month. And if you fall off the wagon, start over. We've all been there many times!
OK ladies, trip to town this morning and will pick up Korean food which will tide us over for a few days. My DH is getting so picky about what he can eat.... seems this is something he can digest well. I would rather we stay away from this processed food, but I think it's working well....I stretch it out into 4 meals and always have a huge salad with beans and avocado for supper with a bit of the take-out "on the side".
Welcome newbies and returnees! Jump on in!!

Katla The decision-making about the boat is tough. It represents an important piece of your life's history.
My mother had a friend (Mary) who made the most exquisite Barbie clothes. She would give them to the church to sell at church bazaars. My mother asked Mary how she could part with these tiny works of art, and Mary said sometimes she couldn't, so she would put the Barbie outfit in a drawer and take it out and look at it from time to time, and then after a year or two, she was ready to donate it because "she had already had it & enjoyed it."
So when my dad died unexpectedly & Mom decided to move to a smaller house, she sold her gorgeous dining room furniture. She had wanted that furniture for 20 years, and had it for only about 1-2 years before she sold it. I was so upset that she had to sell the furniture she had waited so long for, but when I asked her about it, she said, "Oh, honey, I've already had that furniture. I've really enjoyed it for 2 years. I'm moving on to a new phase of my life. Someone else can enjoy that beautiful furniture now. It would just be a burden to me at this point." I was stunned! She said if she hadn't been ready to sell it, she would have simply stayed in that big old house until she was ready.
I think you will know when it's time to make a decision about the boat. The process will play out without rushing it. In the meantime, your beautiful boat is right there. And the memories you and your husband have of your boat adventures...well, they will be there long after the boat has found a new home. (((Hugs)))

ATTENTION LOVELY LADIES!!
We've noticed that you have a very popular thread that may be even more useful for a group. New members can join and you can create multiple topics based on your interests.
Group guidelines are also different and cross-posting to a FB page or off-site blog isn’t allowed in the main forums but is fine for groups.
Talk amongst yourselves and if it's something you'd like to do, designate a person to start the group. Here's a link to create a new public group when you're ready:
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/add
After you've created the group we can lock this thread or let it keep rolling. Up to you.
Hope this helps and wishing you all the best! :flowerforyou:

I came back today just to find I couldn't get back on the wagon. Or should I say the ship has sunk. Well I have not sunk kind of gave up for some time. When I returned this morning couldn't get back on my old site. Needed to start another. So any of you who remember me. Please send me friends requests it's boring all alone on the home page. Thank you all.

Judging from the above post by sugaraddict4321, the notes "[edited by mods]" have had to do with removing links to off-site blogs.
Personally, I wouldn't want to turn this into a closed group. Part of the charm is that anybody can stumble across us and join simply by posting.
I've been awfully quiet of late, because of teaching responsibilities. When I finally got home on Sunday, there were two letters waiting: one summoned me to the mainland for a mammogram and the other demanded that we give the electric company access to our holiday home so they could install a new electric meter that could be read remotely. Dang!
I managed to rebook the mammogram so it was the same day as the electrician and booked a roundtrip ticket to the mainland. Up Sunday, down again Tuesday, up again Thursday (today). I really-really-REALLY didn't want to leave home after being away for ten days, but I gritted my teeth and handed over 10,000 frequent flyer points (plus about 60 dollars worth of fees and taxes) and went.
The mammogram was unremarkable, and driving out to the country place was almost pleasant. (A young eagle lifted from the side of the road and flew right in front of the car for half a minute. Spectacular!)
The electrician had an appointment for between 12:30 and 2:30 pm so I was able to drive during the short period of daylight they still have on the mainland (about 9 am to 2 pm). When I got there, at 11:30, the electrician was at the neighbor's house. Then he drove away to the east, where a private drive extends beyond the end of the road. It was still before his appointment time, so figured he would come back when it was my turn. But no such luck. He never did turn up.
My husband called about it and apparently the people who did the booking had messed up. They were extremely apologetic, he said, but that didn't help me much. I cussed and fumed, but I trust my husband emphasized the abjectness of their apologies, and I trust his judgement. So now we have to book another appointment and one of us will have to fly down and drive out AGAIN.
But some of you will be glad to hear this: Mike the reindeer is still hanging around with the sheep, and they're all wandering in and out of the farmer's yard. Mike has shed his right antler, but not yet lost his left one. That's perfectly normal at this time of year.
Time to reboot my household. Again.
/Penny, incredibly happy to be back at the and hoping to stay at least two weeks this time

Machka9----I am amazed at how many miles you have covered! woot!
I exercise often, but pig out after 6 pm. So I need to cut that out.
I weigh 165 lbs. I weighed 145 lbs 5 years ago. I need to lose 20lbs.3 -

Eh, they made an offer (the mods) and if they just stop there I don’t have a problem with it.
Personally I prefer this thread to a group, but others miles may vary.
Lanette I’m with you. Even keeping essentially same bone density is a win in my book! Good for you!
Karen The story you shared about your mother touched me. She sounds like a very wise and happy woman!
Regarding my hot flashes: food, meat in particular do not seem to be a trigger for me if my MFP logging is accurate (it is). The two potential triggers I’ve found for me are weight loss drops (more than 1lb a week) and seasonal weather shifts. Timing might just be unfortunate right now, I lost seven pounds last month when I shifted my diet to the 5:2 fasting AND autumn temps keep flirting with North Texas but won’t commit so we are in a period of seasonal flux. It may be that combo that is kicking my butt. In the past once two years ago, The hot flashes were worse than now, but not by much. Machka I think your sleep aid (Valerian ?) is the first thing I need to try, I need better sleep more than anything Right now.
gifts The photo site Shutterfly has had many photo gift items on special through their app this month. I have ordered jigsaw puzzles, ornaments, magnets, coasters, notebooks, and a calendar all made up of my photos. These have been essentially freebies with shipping cost only. So the cost has been less than $100 for all these items and I have something a bit personal to give to my nieces and other family. My husband and I host Christmas here for the whole family and it is a big DO!
Here is a pile of the Xmas gifts
Ok, time to face the world today, ready or not (not

Agree about the charm of this thread. And THANK YOU for the happy Mike update. I’m so glad he’s able to stay with his adoptive family!

So sorry if I've got the group into dutch with the moderators - won't post links again. Forums are just odd things... and every one of them has its gotchas. I know Pip was aware that it could be an issue, as she's been very careful not to post links, even for GoFundMe sites that we were all keen to give to. But, we do use "free" space on their site, all of which takes up room on their servers.
There are benefits to groups - but agree that I like the way the thread works, and the lack of formality. Also like starting over fresh and clean each month. I think groups can be intimidating, with that sense of wandering into a clique of sorts--but there are arguments to be made either way.
Anyway--message received, won't post links anymore.4 -
Oops. I think the link to my son's video appearance was actually a Facebook page. Sorry everyone.
I don't want to be a group. New people won't find us.
Well, I screwed up on Sunday morning. I ate a Trader Joe's maple cream cookie. Definitely NOT gluten free. I'm still paying the price for it four days later. I hadn't done that in a long time, so maybe it was good to remind myself one of the reason's I don't eat gluten. My gut has been in pain. My intestines are complaining. My body is swelling. I've been shaking and have serious brain fog. So stupid of me.
I'm going to leave work early today, load up the car, and take my youngest up to my mother's. I'll spend the night there and then drive down to Portland for my flight. Which reminds me that I need to check in and print my boarding pass. I am a mass of nerves and the gluten on Sunday is just amplifying everything for me.
I will try to check in next week, but I don't know what to expect for internet service. I assume it will be fine, but we'll see.
Take care.

Janetr I'm pretty sure you can give the name of a Facebook page. I think it's posting a link that's the problem. But I don't actually understand why.

Hi ladies,
Michele, I absolutely love the chameleon! Looks like something my DD would make. She love to draw cartoons and is quite good. What a cleaver vegetable tray. It looks so inviting.
Rye, the cats made me smile. I use melatonin occasionally and I like it because it is gentle and you don’t wake up in the morning feeling like you’ve been drugged. I’m lucky that I’m a good sleeper. The colors in your picture were so vivid. Loved it. What great gifts.
Katla, boats are so much care and the maintenance is so expensive. I never had any interest in one but I know people who have one and even they say they are a lot of work. I’m sure after all the wonderful times you’ve had on it, it will be hard to give up. It’s like giving up a memory.
Machka, YEAH they are out!! You must feel so much better.
Heather, what a nice idea to give your friend a meditation bracelet. You are such a good friend.
Andipat, Welcome. You are part of the group just by posting. Tell us something about yourself and the name you want to be called.
Kelley, thanks for the info on water. That was interesting to learn that we lose the ability to recognize when we are thirsty as we age.
Lanette, I agree, dunking Snickerdoodles in the hot chocolate would be good! I love Snickerdoodles although I’ve never made them. Probably a good thing.
Karen, what a smart woman your mother was to enjoy her art before donating it. I was confused by the moderators popping up. Seemed weird. I like it as it is.
Penny, glad you could find a little enjoyment out of a wasted trip for the electrician appointment. OH, so glad to hear Mike is still around.
Lisa, didn’t realize about the links. Thanks.
Felicia, have a safe trip.
Janet, can you give the name of the FB page again.
I’ve decided to take next Tuesday off. Can’t seem to get into the vet for Allie’s booster shot. I will get the snow tires on in the morning, take DH to work and then go get the cat. It didn’t snow last night like it was supposed to and it is warmer too. Still at the same weight. I will be shocked when I get on and it in under 200 like I’ve been waiting for. Knowing me, I’ll burst into tears of joy.
Well back to work. I hate having lunch at my desk as I keep getting interrupted with work. Finally called the foot dr and made another appt. Now it’s my ankle that is giving me issues. I’ve been wearing my support and that helps although still getting a little pain. Without it, it really is painful. Don’t know what I did. Certainly did happen from exercising. DD and I are going to exercise with the kettlebells this weekend. I think once I get started and it becomes a routine, I’ll be more likely to continue. It’s just the learning a routine that I hate.
Well lunch is over so I guess I should get back to work. Nice chatting with you. Terry

NYKaren: I appreciate the article that you shared. I have been able to stay in charge of my weight by continuously counting calories in and out. I can eat sweets and stay in control, but alcohol is a devil. If I drink alcohol I gain weight even if I am diligent about calorie counting. I suspect my "diligence" is not as good as it should be. :ohwell:
Machka: I'm happy that you are healing from your surgery and got a good report from the dentist.
KJLaMore: DH gets seasick on the boat. He went there and did what needed to be done, but hasn't actually been out of the slip in well over a year, closer to two.
Barbie & Karen in VA: I think you understand the boat situation we're in very well. I'm the one who wants to hang on to it in hopes things will improve for him, but I think I'm being unrealistic. :ohwell:
Karen: I'm in agreement with you about the moderator. I am not interested in changing something that is so positive. This group is miraculous.
I seem to be fighting off something and hope to be feeling better soon. I'm wearing layers of clothing and sitting beside an electric heater, and I'm cold anyway. I'm planning to stay inside today. I hope to go to yoga tomorrow, but not out to the stable until I get past this cold spot.

I adore our month to month thread. I remember when I found this group, it was like finding gold. We are a treasure! Welcome to the new and returning girls! Remember to bookmark the star so that you can return to this site and remember to check Barbie's last post each month for the link to take us into December! I will have to hop on Lisa's blog and bookmark that so I can find it without her having to post or repeat the name of her blog. Naughty naughty
I hopped on to say, that I realized that I recorded some chocolate last night, that I actually FORGOT to eat! I am stunned. I have never forgotten to eat chocolate! I think I have earned a halo!
Also...I peeked in my hubby's office for a moment and saw he had mnm's on his desk. I was going to grab one, but then I noticed that he ate all of the green ones! Lol! That's what we used before they invented the little blue pill. (We don't use the little blue pill; but I just thought it was funny that he ate all of the green ones. Must be old habits die hard)

afternoon ladies~
I am beat.. didnt get down to see DFIL today.. I go every day and missing one once in awhile is alright.. I dont beat myself up..
Tom and I talked a bit last night. and I called off the bloodhound.. no more motion to compel, he explained what he used the money out of his 401k on and I believe him....we did the kitchen over in 2014, paid off both our cars, and he did say it was a mistake to buy the camero...
my attorney is getting a proposal together to end this all finally. and if we can do mediation and get through it , we are hoping before the end of the year... he thanked me for calling the attorney off his neck and I said well you better be as kind at the final judgement.. and he said I want what is best for both of us, and I shot back if you did we wouldn't be getting divorced, and he said your right.. so he knows...
I am really tired in between all the running around I did a load of laundry and so I will put fresh sheets on the bed. and tuck myself in early with some sleepytime extra5 -
Today is International Day for Tolerance!
“The International Day for Tolerance supports the notion that education is a key factor in preventing intolerance across the human race. On this day, we are encouraged to educate and learn how to practice solidarity between ethnic, social and cultural groups.” Seems like people need this more than ever – we’re in this thing together, after all!
Karen – Now snickerdoodles are definitely old favorites for me. I make them almost every Christmas. From looking at the recipe I think maybe I’ve had something like a hermit cookie, but I don’t remember ever hearing them called that.
Patsy – Welcome back! You’re right, with the holidays ahead of us, we need all the encouragement we can get! Do you have some books published, or are these children’s books your first?
Marcelyn – Love your pottery. You’ve got some lovely shapes there, and the walls look so delicate.
Joyce – Oh, dear, sounds like your sleep schedule is all confused now! Hope you got a decent night’s rest.
Michele – That chameleon would look so adorable in someone’s garden!
Machka – So glad the stitch removal went well! I can imagine that sitting in that dentist’s chair for ANYTHING might give you pause for awhile!
Andipat – Welcome to the group! Looking forward to getting to know you.
Lanette – Here in Texas, the question of whether or not to put beans in chili is very nearly a religious choice, and tolerance for the other camp is low! (I don’t put them in my chili, but my mom always put them in hers. I’m happy to eat it either way.)
Penny – Give Mike the reindeer a hello wave for me! I wish MFP would change the link option to open the link in a new window/tab. That would make it easier to stay here and still share useful resources. The inability to do that is why I post URLs in text instead of creating hyperlinks.
Rye – I used Shutterfly to make keepsake books from our family trip to Norway a few years ago. I bought a whole bunch of copies and gave them to everyone for Christmas that year. It ended up being a really special way to remember our trip together.
Lisa – Perfect solution to the “group” question!
Rye – Woohoo! Congratulations on losing 20% of your starter weight!
My opinion about the group suggestion from Sugar is that our monthly thread works fine for me. Converting ourselves to a group might make it easier to go back and find posts, but I kind of like the open nature of the forum thread.
I guess the holiday rush has officially started. The foster greyhound went back to her owner yesterday so our little family is back to normal. Tomorrow we leave for College Station for a pre-Thanksgiving reunion with college friends. Then we’ll be back for three days before we head down to Houston for actual Thanksgiving with my family. I don’t know if Philip’s schedule will lend itself to Christmas travel, so I’m looking forward to spending some time with them. We’ll be camped out on sofas in my dad’s small condo, though, so it’ll be a pretty short visit. We have to swing by the river house afterwards to shut everything down for the winter. My brother was supposed to be there tomorrow so I didn’t winterize when I left last weekend. It’s pretty far out of our way, but I think it’ll be easier for us to take care of it than for anybody else.
Now I’ve got to figure out what I’m taking for the potluck dinner this weekend, so I’d better go finish my work day so I can get to cooking.
Wishing you all a lovely day!

Marcelyn - I am totally impressed with your latest batch of pots. Are they all done and ready to use or is there further glazing and firing in the works?
They have to dry, slowly. I cover them loosely with a plastic dry-cleaner's bag.
Then I bisque (some call it biscuit) fire them to 1911°
Then I glaze them. If I dip them it is faster but I don't have enough dip buckets for all my colors so I will paint on three coats of each glaze/combination. You have to let the glaze dry naturally, you can't speed it up with a hair dryer or such because it will cause the glaze to "shiver" (run off) the pot. So glazing takes about three days.
Then I fire them a second time to 2167° The pots will be in the kiln for about 24 hours for this firing. About 12 hours of heating up and at least 12 hrs (sometimes more) of cooling. The hardest part is not opening the kiln when it's done. If you open it too soon the sudden temperature change can cause the pots to crack.
The whole process will take me about three weeks including the drying time if it isn't too humid outside. I can help that out by putting a dehumidifier in the room....
I have enough done for one huge bisque firing (you can stack things together and they can touch in bisque, but about three glaze firings (they can't touch each other so it takes more room). So I'm going to be busy!
Throwing mugs tomorrow. (Sewing today)

I agree with everyone about keeping the forum month to month—this is a touchstone for me. Hope my link to the nyt article didn’t awaken the sleeping moderator.
Well I saw the dermatologist and I have a staff infection where I’ve been scratching too much!! Gotta get that under control with antibiotic and the strongest steroid cream. Have to follow up in another 2 weeks!!!
DH and I are dreaming of travel and retirement, it’s all we talk about seems like. Gotta run, getting my hair colored!
