Volume Eaters Thread

@Gordorino - I FEEL YOU! I've been eating more and more celery because it's one thing that I like pretty well that has almost no calories. Although at the amount I'm eating, it does have some! So like... lemme see... okay, a pound of celery is under 100 calories. So just weigh it and log it and then make sure to budget for it.3

I think this is the thread I need. I posted this on the Getting Started thread (because I’m just getting started!) and was told to check out volume eating;
“If I eat three meals of 500 calories a day, which would make me lose weight, but then eat two or three pounds of celery will that change the amount of weight I would otherwise lose? I ask because before I decided to care about my body (a month ago) I would be munching on stuff almost all the time. Even if I was not hungry, even when I was full I would munch and munch on chips, peanuts, snack cakes and whatnot. I could never eat just half a bag of tortilla chips. I made a point to finish the bag (because another cat might snatch it if it’s not in your stomach right?). So, I still want to munch all the time. I tried gum, but that doesn’t do it for me. I have been munching on celery a lot recently, and cucumbers. I avoid eating this stuff with any salad dressing or anything at least. Cabbage next maybe? I considered pickles but there is to much sodium for my high blood pressure to deal with I reckon. Yea, it’s called “Binge Eating Disorder” right? So, all else equal is munching on bunches and bunches of celery really gunna make me fatter? If not are there any other foods in this category?”
If you do get bored of eating it without dressing I would look into the yogurt dressings (Walmart has these in the produce section).
One of the brands I had got was around 35 calories for two tablespoons & another was 40 calories. Powdered peanut butter is a lower alternative to regular if you would want to use that.2 -
@Gordorino also Try spinach right from the bag instead of chips. Spinach tastes a little salty to me, so it usually calms that craving for about 15 cals. I too eat a s**t ton of zucchini. I slice it in thick slabs and eat with some salt or cubed with cottage cheese and a sprinkle of pistachios. I hate celery, even slathered in peanut butter. It’s unfortunate.2

@kellyjellybellyjelly sadly, I’ve been making the worlds most boring suppers. Tonight was a whole head (yes, I ate it solo) of roasted/burnt cauliflower with sriracha and a baked acorn squash with maple syrup.3

that sounds so yummy...you must have had one long dinner!2 -
Boring here too. Just lots of boring repeat dinners with veggies and cottage cheese. My daughter and I have been on a kick. Varying veggies, topping with cottage cheese. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I haven't been doing much for dessert either. Just yogurt and berries.0 -
honestly iv been living off fruit and veg with one small 300 calorie "smash plate" -can of tuna green onions and 2 sunnyside up eggs with whatever sauce i want normally of the hot variety lol- Just to up the protein.
Can eat alot of fruit and veg in a calorie allowance i do need to ween self off though. Barely managing any fat with my eggs and protein isnt terrible but its nowhere near as high as i need for my activity level (very lol)
But iv very much been enjoying the bulk lol. Been a nice sort of mental cleanse to not really think to much about macros for a bit.
Begining by trying to get in more veg vs fruit and slowly ill up my fats and proteins again and become slightly less bulky
Why is a huge plate of mixed veg with hot sauce and fry salt so dang good lmao. Or a huge freezer bag of frozen fruit.
Although as far as food goes i guess i could be eating worse things1 -
Another lazy supper that was actually quite good. One large bag of pre-washed baby spinach with EVOO, salt a little balsamic topped with 2 diced hard boiled eggs and one piece of Gorton's Simply grilled salmon. I had been skeptical of frozen fish, but it’s really good (and 90 cals).
Desert was Fage 0 with Quest powder stirred in.4 -
Made a large stew/soup for dinner no idea why was craving warm creamy comfort i guess.
Broccoli, Spinach, Peppers, Onion, Scallion, carrots, Potato and salmon in a garlicy mushroom soup base ....Im going to eat it ALL

That looks delicious— minus the carrots, which I despise.1

been trying to avoid just eating all the time allowed self twice my normal meal calories for it XD Was delicious considering i thought i had nothing to eat at home lol. Was impressed i was STARVING and passed on fast foods even thinking all i had to eat at home was fruit n veg and i wanted fat and protein after a long cold hard days work. Quite proud of self4 -
Just dropped in to say I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm less than 5 lbs from goal but felt like I was white knuckling it to stick to even my small 250 calorie deficit and like there was no way I would be able to eat at maintenance for the rest of my life without being hungry. I'm currently enjoying a lunch of a fettuccine alfredo lean cuisine with a whole steamer bag of broccoli dumped in and I feel a lot more like I've got this now. Thanks all!8

Tossed together a random dinner and it was awesome and huge for about 400 cals. In sauté pan: fresh garlic, chopped onions, cut asparagus and chopped broccoli, cooked with a little olive oil and dash red pepper flake. After that cooked down, added 200g cut mushrooms, cooked a little and added a bag of shiratake fettuccine and 1/2 cup cottage cheese. Dash of sriracha over top. Big bowl of cold weather comfort food.

These are 5 cup Tupperware bowls stuffed with roast eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, broccoli and butternut. Heat 3 minutes at work and top with cottage cheese. I follow it with an apple and Greek yogurt for a <500 cal lunch.13 -

Made this jambalaya a week ago. Took it to a Christmas party. Took the leftovers home. Got a request to make it again this week. Easy and filling and you could add rice for volume if you like. Made a double batch in a large slow cooker.

Also made this cauliflower casserole recently. Will make this again.

Hi; Does acorn and butternut squash have a sweet flavor or more of a mild savory flavor? I have recently stated to eat more veggies and no meats or fish so far. I noticed a 4lb difference in my weight in one week. Crazy, but my caloric intake was almost the same as when I am tracking and eating meat!1

I've been wondering if roasted veggies taste good after warming up the next day.1 -

I've never had acorn squash, but I find butternut squash more sweet than savory. Could be the way I cook it. I love to mix it with more savory vegetables. Delicata squash is also awesome, and I find it easier to cut.1 -

love acorn squash - I buy them organic because the skin is also eatable when cooked. Love them roasted - not as sweet as sweet potato -mild/not as dense as one either

I love butternut squash- I find they have a mild slightly sweet taste. I love all kinds of squash as well.1

Heres a recipie I make with acorn squash for fancy dinners, the presentation is beautiful.....
Cut in half and scoop seeds ( one half per person), grill cut side down for 30 mins in indirect heat. Meanwhile, toast pecan pieces in butter and add some maple syrup (sugar free works fine). Flip the squash over and put the butter/nut mix in, a splash of bourbon to jazz it up and grill cut side up for another 30 mins. Goes great with beef and green beans or asparagus. And Pinot noir.6 -
Not entirely new or fancy but with savoy cabbage in season here right now, I've become totally obsessed with roasted savoy cabbage. I just had half a head the other night. I would have never thought to love savoy cabbage that much but roasted? Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I love it all - from the black burned crispy outside leaves over the crunchy stems to the soft yellow insides. And it has pretty great macros too; only downside is all the sodium because of the generous amount of salt I use.
I've also rediscovered escarole lettuce (Bavarian endive) with it being in season here. I hadn't really eaten it in forever but decided to buy it again the other week and come to love it too. I like the slightly bitter taste and crunchy texture (for a lettuce); also liking how much fiber that lettuce has. I often combine it now with shredded red cabbage for a quick snack which makes for a pretty big bowl of salad with lots of fiber but fairly little calories (using a non-fat dressing it's like 70 kcal).
ETA: I guess I could at least post a pic of the salad... this version has also Radischen (radish).

This is me!!! Just found this thread, and I'm totally a volume eater!
One of my fave "volume" meals (apart from a big-*kitten* salad, like I read in some of the earlier posts) is a sushi-type wrap, made with some coleslaw out of a pack (no dressing) half a packet of Uncle Toby's instant rice and quinoa, some protein (like flavoured tinned tuna or chicken- teriyaki is good) and a bit of dressing of some description, if I have the calories for it, and if the protein needs extra flavour. Divide into about 3 portions and wrap each portion up in a nori sheet. Then eat the lot! Pretty filling, makes me feel like I'm eating sushi but with less calories. Love it!3 -
I'm so glad for this thread. I'm currently bulking on 2400 cals but I need to volume eat because otherwise I'd eat 4000! Love all the ideas, thank you!3
