My goal is to run for health, not try to stay healthy enough to run!

Fully agree. This is honestly why to this day I do not call myself a runner. Sure I have a couple marathons under my belt, I am looking at an ultra in 2018... and then Dopey... but, like rheddmobile I run for health, and my focus is not on being healthy enough to run. The races are just goals to help keep focus.

    *shrugs*

I know that feeling. I run to keep myself from other habits. Several coworkers have gone to rehab and I don't want to go down that road.... job stress keeps me running. Races are for focus and to test myself, but running is also just a tool.

Yeah. Exactly. I have plenty of loved ones that have umm we will just say gone other routes and regretted it. I try to not repeat their mistakes. I have enough skill at making my own :)

Yeah, I'm good at making mistakes for myself, so i don't need to repeat others mistakes. Running 16+ hours does give a high though, so there is that.

I have never experienced the so-called runner's high and after 1800+ miles this year alone, I am convinced there is no such thing and it is some grand conspiracy to make people run.

Lol. Like I said I get it at 16+ hours.... you need to go longer.

    December 5 — 4.11 miles
December 11 — 4.1 miles (although my Garmin only recorded 2)
    December 13 — 4.07 miles
December 19 — 4.1 miles (but Garmin died after 1)
    December 21 — 9.09 miles
    December 23 — 4.12 miles

    December total 29.59 miles

Tonight was the second time in as many runs that I got chased by a yappy little off-leash dog. Both times the owners were HILARIOUS. When I stopped and the owners finally caught up with me/their dog, they said, “Don’t worry, he won’t hurt you, he’s all bark”. And I’m thinking, you think I’m afraid of your little ankle biter?!? I stopped because I was worried I was going to kick it in the face and/or be tripped by it as it was snapping at my heels. :#
One owner ended up having his other dog take off when he dropped that leash in order to catch the ankle biter. :D Poor guy. But obviously he shouldn’t have had the dog off-leash.

Had a pretty nice run today, enjoying the cooler weather and cloudy skies! I wanted to get in at least 8 and didn't think I would make that when I started out but we managed. I went out later than usual and the trail was empty other than the bunnies and squirrels. There was a large flock of crows and California buzzards that were making a big racket like a scene from the Birds - rather unnerving to say the least. I think Hobbes the Vizsla thought they were going to carry him off the way he kept looking at them and then at me!

Ran a mile on the treadmill at the end of strength day since I won't get to run over Christmas. I miss it!

@rheddmobile I discovered putting Raki (or maybe Ouzo would work) in coffee. It’s lovely and gives a bit of sweetness, but only something to try if you don’t need to actually DO anything that day.....

Here's a pic of as much winter as we get here: Mauna Kea (>13,000ft) taken as I started off my (short, painfully slow...) run at the bayfront this morning (outrigger canoes in foreground):

    I miss awesome too.

Did you know that Usain Bolt has scoliosis?

I'm finally getting around to reading December's RW issue. First article to tackle is on symmetry. Well, finding out Bolt isn't symmetrical made just me quit reading it. Figured it must be "woo*. BUT There's a difference in the 100 meter and 10,000 meter runner. Maybe I'll learn something.

@Ryokat I had a dog come at me yesterday during my run, he was off leash (owner sitting on front porch 2 houses up). He was pretty big, was growling and barking, teeth showing, hair up on his back. When owner came into the street, I said "Is this yours" "oh he won't hurt you" "Okay he's growling at me showing teeth" "oh he's fine" "Okay I have mace and if he attempts to come one more step towards me I'll spray him" "well why would you do that" "because your dog is off the leash growling at me and showing his teeth and you don't seem to have a problem with that". Leash your dogs people.

Yes he talks about having had scoliosis in his documentary, "Bolt". It was actually a great film- if you ever wanted to dislike Gatlin more than you potentially already do watch it! I remember finishing it and going off on a rant at Ben about how I feel dopers should receive a lifetime ban :D

Dec. 24 - 5km so my thermometer lied to me this morning... Said it was - 3°C and climbing so I dressed for that... Come to realize after getting home it was - 9°. No wonder I was so cold.

December goal: Keep kicking at Zumbro training
Nominal mileage goal: Let's say 120?? I really don't know. Going for like 70% trail

    12/1- 7.2
    12/2- 8.2
    12/3- 9.5
    12/4- 5.8
    12/5- REST
    12/6- 6.5
    12/7- REST
    12/8- 8.4ish
    12/9- 9.1

    12/11- REST
    12/12- 4.1
    12/13- 6.6
    12/14- 4.9
    12/15- SW-LJ Rest day
    12/16- 6- ugh, so slow
    12/17- 8.1
    12/18- REST
    12/19- 7
    12/20-6.7

    12/22-7.2
    12/23- 10
    12/24- 8.3

    Total: 130.2

Today's notes: Hit the MTB trails again. Assignment was 1:30:00. ended up running 1:34:42 because I didn't want to stop the watch and walk back to my truck. Got in 8.3 miles for an average pace of 11:25. For me this is flying on single track. It was a pretty flat run, but that's OK, the goal was time on feet and getting in trail miles, so I did that. Great way to start Christmas eve.

    Have a Runderful day all!

    2018 races
    3/28- END-SURE 50k
4/13- Zumbro Endurance Race 100 Mile

Started out to do 5 with Skip, but a bathroom emergency sent us home for 4. Ugh. That's okay lots to do today. I don't mind the cold 44F but I really need to see some sunshine soon. It's been overcast the entire week and it's enough already.

Question for you parents with driving aged kids. Last night Skip went out with my best friend's daughter, the daughter's boyfriend (who I never met before) and the friend's niece and nephew (they are 15 and 13). They went at 7:30 pm to see Christmas lights then to an Escape room at 9:00. I track Skip on an iPhone app to have an idea when she is and when she'll be home. It also tells the highest speed the car traveled. Seems my friend's daughter has no issue driving 90 mph. I think I need to mention this to my friend. What are your thoughts? Skip said this was one handed driving with the boyfriend hand in her lap (the friend's daughter's lap that is). I personally would want someone to tell me if it was Skip.

What are your goals for this next year?

To be more consistent in my mileage. I want to do longer runs and get in more trail running. Once Skip goes off to college I'll have my Saturday's back (or hopefully I'll be at college meets) and it will give me more time.
Finish Oak Barrel in under 2:30, 2:11 is my PR but Oak Barrel has alot more hills than the flat PR course.

Where do you want to be a year from now?
Besides somewhere tropical  Injury free On a personal side, I really need to start learning to put me first, I've spent a lot of years putting everyone before myself.

How do you see your training evolving?
I want to get my speed back. It kills me to run 12 min miles all the time.

    Feel better @WandaVaughn
    Happy Birthday @HonuNui

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates.
